Hey Barry, great questions! Unfortunately you do need to have both of your shots in order to attend the program and sail. This video pretty much told you exactly what you need to do if YOU DONT want to attend the school. As far as the union hall situation. You will need to plan ahead and travel to your nearest one dear. It’s a pain but really worth it. It’s many sailors who live out the country or live hours away from a union hall. Don’t let that get in the way for you buddy. A car or plane ride will be needed. Plan accordingly ..esp with your medical and traveling back and forth to a hall.
thanks for the valuable info quick question when you guys are talking about going to a hall for work does that mean any hall for mariners near where you live or do you have to be part of a union or there union to enter and apply for jobs in halls can you explain thanks much???
You are very welcome ! 😊 you are correct, we’re speaking of ANY SIU Union hall that’s close to you or if you wanted to travel to a different one. Where is the best place to look for an OS job, I just keep finding AB jobs.
Just need to be at the halls or look at non Union company in indeed! Subscribe to my youtube
I’m scared of that STCW swim how is that swim if you don’t know how to swim?
I feel you ! Just k ow you’re going to be just fine! That life jacket is no joke and will bring you lots of comfort. I don’t know how to swim over water or float on my back. They let me float on my stomach and I pass. They really work with you to make sure you’re comfortable.
I just got all my stuff passport, twic, mmc my hall is like way up in Michigan. they definitely pushed the schooling which I'm fine with it'd get me out of home town! but I want to get ball rolling as fast as possible what where the two tests he mentioned and said was easy.
also is there a gym on board and can't you explore while docked at ports mingle and network?
Yup so test are your basic math & reading! Very easy for anyone to pass. Gyms are always onboard some better than others unfortunately. The school has a great gym I personally enjoy it when I go to take classes. When you get to port your able to get off and do as you please . Just be back before your work shift starts.
Omg thank you I also pretty muched asked same question on your IG , I'm just super excited lol. So when your at port your still working, it's not a free for all lack of better words lol. I think I might just do apprenticeship lady said in total 1500 to be safe there and back plus fees thank thank you for the response. Last question how many months do you work on and off
@@Tyrson54321 no problem and congratulations this shit ain’t for everybody 😩😭😭😭 my first 3 years I did 4 months and 6 months contract , but now I do a lot of relief jobs 90 days and under and I absolutely love it. Just focus on getting your sea days for your benefits and take it from there
@@stuthesailor I heard 6 months along time, but I have not more strong ties in my home city , I'm free as a bird if I have to courage to get out start fresh 💪💪 plus I want to network with people around the world
What's new bro??
Got my passport, TWIC application submitted, gotta get my medical certificate the MMC here I come!
Almost there keep going
Is the COVID vac required for this job, and how do you go through the union without the apprentice program if you don’t live close to the union hall?
Hey Barry, great questions! Unfortunately you do need to have both of your shots in order to attend the program and sail. This video pretty much told you exactly what you need to do if YOU DONT want to attend the school. As far as the union hall situation. You will need to plan ahead and travel to your nearest one dear. It’s a pain but really worth it.
It’s many sailors who live out the country or live hours away from a union hall. Don’t let that get in the way for you buddy. A car or plane ride will be needed. Plan accordingly ..esp with your medical and traveling back and forth to a hall.
Awesome video, very informative!
Much Thanks brother !!
thanks for the valuable info quick question when you guys are talking about going to a hall for work does that mean any hall for mariners near where you live or do you have to be part of a union or there union to enter and apply for jobs in halls can you explain thanks much???
You are very welcome ! 😊 you are correct, we’re speaking of ANY SIU Union hall that’s close to you or if you wanted to travel to a different one. You will have to register at that hall first in order to get a gig. After you register, that is where you will be able to go in order to ship out on a vessel.
I want to join merchant marine.
I just retired at 56.
I will work the lowest level job.
I live in Florida.
I do not want to take the classes.
Did you have to get your dental checked and passed?
I have my American passport.
What should my next step be?
What’s the money like? Starting from bottom up
Is it a difference between the pay if I was to join the school or not ?
Not really just depends on your position
Just wondering that vessel 🚢 looks like a liberty promise.
For whodie from duval what’s the numbers lookin like monthly going that route compared to taking the SIU program because their averaging $6,559 monthly, wondering if it’s a pay difference.
Position?
@@stuthesailor soon as you get to phase 5 estimate about $3,279 every 2 weeks for deck
@@eddiecrow9133 understood let me run this past him !
@@stuthesailor appreciate it I know he mentioned he was engine room not deck but just wanna know if he had to work his way up when it came to pay going that route vs just taking the siu & get seatime during training
@@eddiecrow9133 absolutely this was his first vessel btw… I’ll be sure to connect w him tho still.
Is this the same thing as a tankerman ?? I’m thinking of applying to a trainee position
Did you do it?
yes
Do you have to know how to swim? And will they test you in a pool or at sea? 😅im serious
Seems like no one wants to answer that question. I want to know
Not at all. STCW will be doing my in the pool where its safe
Do you have to go to school for this job it looks all military on some of these videos I hate the military back then I hate it now lol
You don't have to honestly
I go to school on the 29th of July I wish I knew before I didn’t have to go to the school

I can’t pinpoint that because every vessel contract is different..position ..?
@@stuthesailor thanks dope videos , I like how ya keep it real 💯
@@malikalmardie621 most definitely!!! I was a SA on my first vessel making 6K a month but it was a Tanker !

The closet Union Hall near you! One in every port city
@@stuthesailor i searched up union hall in maps and the nearest to me is Virginia? I live in California so there isnt one in California? When i search on google it says there's one in mission hills (Laborers International Union of North America), LA (Laborers' Local 300 Union) and another in LA/San Pedro (union hall). do all of these count as union halls?
I live in Jacksonville Duval yes sir
Ayeeeeeee
@@stuthesailor I’m getting my Twic and merchant marine credentials
So there's nowhere in Massachusetts that has a union hall.
Is the training a mandatory requirement?
The apprenticeship?
Now I have my twic card and my passport and only need my mmc
You on your way!!

Can I take the safety and security after I get to a ship
Negative!

Siu vs mtags apprentichip program which is better?
never heard of mtags !
mitags was the MMP school for radar, etc. for deck officers and river pilots. not for unlicensed seamen and beginners.@@stuthesailor
so going to the school is a lil bit better than none?
