Joe performed a private show for my company a little over 20 years ago - I was amazed by his talent with close-up magic. He was performing for a lot of engineers who KNEW is was sleight of hand but enjoyed it so much because they just couldn't catch him doing it. Joe also has really big hands which would seem to make it even harder. Anyway, he provided me an invite to the Magic Castle in Hollywood which really impressed my date. We had a spectacular time and never forgot what a great guy he was.
Thank you so much for your kind words …actually having big hands I think makes it a tiny bit easier but don’t tell it to the other engineers :-) happiest of holidays my friend hope to see you again
I love how P and T trying taking a guess and failing sometimes makes the trick so much better. Knowing he finished clean just took the trick to a whole new level. I went from having a few guesses to having ZERO idea how it's done.
@@tomthumb1234 It's not that they couldn't figure it out. They only get 1 guess at the method to be fair. Otherwise they could guess every method until they get it right. That or they need to catch the move. They thought trick cards and were wrong.
I couldn't figure it out. I thought he was using gimmicked cards, I'm assuming the Archilles Heel reference had something to do with it, i.e., the ace had a 2 of clubs sign in one corner, and the 2 had an ace of diamonds sign in one corner. He's careful to only show 3/4 of each card and he obscures the corners with his arm when showing the cards. However, at the end the cards are fully shown, showing no gimmicked corners. So I can only think the Monti Move, tucking it in his pants, removed a corner overlay as the last insertion is much deeper and there's an extra hand pat on his pants after the move. Similarly, placing the Ace in the box removed an overlay, or prepped for removal, so withdrawing it left the overlay inside the box. The cards had to be clean by the end of the trick or Penn/Teller would have seen something.
He usually seems to use gimmicked cards and I think he fooled them by changing his MO. He was always so carefully covering the corners of the 2 and the ace. So Joe knew they would know how it's usually done (he actually used to sell this trick) and double-bluffed them, either with a fourth card or a gimmicked case I would think. ua-cam.com/video/-BDcr-99fdo/v-deo.html
I thought they were those gimmick cards where two stick together to look like one because at 4:15 it looked like he gripped too hard and spread them apart a little bit in the corner. But surely Penn and Teller would have caught that when they examined them. I’m stumped
Yep you’re right. You use those cards because they all have a lot of white space along the edges. So really all you need to fake the two of diamonds is something on the corner. This can be attached and lined up with the corner on one of the two other cards because you have the back design printed on it and during the shuffle you just stack it appropriately. But how does this corner overlay keep disappearing…well that’s why you stick the cards in your pants. Down the front of the pants it goes! You can notice that when he is doing the three card shuffle he tends to have a gap when mixing some cards. Likely to avoid sticking it to the wrong card.
I am fairly certain the corners on 2 and Ace are diffirent during the majority of the trick (glued on or otherwise somehow attached to make the trick work), but those corners get removed when he puts the cards into pants for the last time before showing the whole cards. Only the 3 is shown fully (without the corner covered) during the trick. Corners are also the areas that P&T go for immediately.
I teared up when I saw him tear up. Must have been the onions I cut yesterday. Delayed response. Great job! Great routine and you can tell, a great spirit when you see one! Way to go!!!
The 2 of clubs card has one corner as Ace of Diamond only in the corner part (ace of diamond corner stuck on top of 2 of clubs only for the corner part). In the first monte move, when he reveals the card, he carefully hides the corner edge of the card with his hand and forearm. In the last switch, he places the ace of diamond in the box, cards in his hands are 2 of club (with the corner of diamond ace) and 3 of club. Before the reveal he places the corner in his pants and at that time he removes the corner (camera cuts away at the exact same time too). The corner part goes inside the pants now and hence the cards are inspectable. Great trick and great execution.
@@todustyoushallr3turn Maybe magnetic. Maybe clingy surfaces. Something like a roughed surface, rubber cement, a dried corn start solution on the surface, spray adhesive, and so on.
I think the "delamination" reveals a bit out the trick is done. I don't think there was any intent to bust him. They haven't examined the props with a desire to bust anyone since the first season.
Yeah, I saw this on the first watch and I thought for sure they would catch it and figure out how it was done. I thought he was using 4 cards and my only question was how he could hide a giant card without anyone noticing, but other commenters mentioned corners of cards, and that would be a lot easier to dispose of
@@jamesreed5678 The delaminated bit is indeed how the trick was done, but by the time Penn and Teller examined the prop cards, that bit was down his pants. The cards had nothing left to hide when the routine was finished. That's what the "I worked hard" bit was about - he had to figure out how to set it up so the cards were immaculate at the end.
You can really tell this guy has been performing on the street, I thought especially by the way he talked to Brooke. He didn't stop at the trick, he has an instinct to connect with people so he's talking about shoes, complimenting Brooke's outfit. In a couple sentences Brooke is already touching him and saying "We". That seems like a good way to not get beaten up 😂
4:52 the ace is clearly the highest and leftmost, and he picks up that same card once the backs are facing to us, tucks the middle card in his pants and reveals the middle card to be the ace. That to me is more magical than anything else because there wasn't even any evident sleight of hand. Nothing looked like it shifted. It just stopped being what it was.
The corner covers he used were dropped into the pants and into the case. Very simple. P&T should have asked to examine his case and down his draws. That's where the "magic" was finally contained (yeah, that's what she said).
They should have asked to check his pants. The entire routine was obvious to me how it was done until the full card reveal at the end, but then it wasn't difficult to realize that he simply slid off the false corners into his pants and the card stand. Still well executed.
When he went 2 cards... he had a sticker on one card saying it was the ace..he really did put the ace in the holder. When the 2 cards went in his pants the sticker comes off. If u noticed he patted his belt line to make sure wasn't sticking out
Brilliant. Spoiler below... The cards are ordinary, just large. However, the Ace has a 2 stuck to one corner, and the 2 has an A stuck to one corner. During the final trick he slips the covers off, very deftly.
sometimes some people need a break in life! This was his moment, and that trophy meant the world to him! I believe him that he works hard!! Well deserved!!
That was so awesome! I actually teared up a little bit when he Fooled them, and I don't normally do that. There's just something about Joe that really makes you care about him. Which is probably why he'd be a good scam artist! LOL! 💙
Now that Joe has performed his three card monte on T.V.. and has won for his performance. Which he truly deserves. Absolutely fabulous. Any chance that he will be marketing this routine for us magicians? As I’ve been doing the sidewalk shuffle for many years and would absolutely love to replace it with something so powerful. What a great effect.
should be a transparent slip that goes over the corner, which is easier to manipulate, (i.e. 2clubs with a corner slip of ace, and ace with a 2club slip) and remove before the end of trick
I finally got it (i think) after a frame-by-frame. There are actually 5 cards (A A 2 2 3). The way he's holding the cards keeps it so we only ever see 3 at a time, and when he places the cards back in the box before bowing, the extra cards get hidden there. So when P&T inspect at the end, only 3 cards are left out for them to look at.
I don't think so. That would be too easy to accidentally mess up. I think more likely there is a cover on the corner. You never see the middle of the card before "changes", only the corner. The cover probably gets deposited in his pants while the cards are blocking the view.
There is no way he could hide 2 extra massive cards quickly without them noticing. Teller would have seen them in the bag when he was on stage anyway. it's the corners.
WRONG, there's only 3 cards, but there is an A^ sticker that stick on the corner of the 2C. Only 3 cards at the end the sticker is left in his pants so the cards are all clean.
There is a reason you don't do the same trick twice (at least in a row) because you do see things you missed at first. I can see how he certainly did it. The cards are clean. but not always. And the end of the trick, leaves them clean so they can be examined. I love it. What a great routine.
Yoo I LOVE THIS!! Amazing performance. I watched it twice and still am fooled on how he did the last trick. Thank you for sharing his video on your channel. Wow!
after watching it over again and going back to watch how he did it 20 years ago, finally figured out how he did it. but it was a darned good trick and live audiences aren't going to be able to watch you do it over and over again and will still be amazed like i was
Funny Story, I Was In Vegas At The Outlet Mall, fellow selling magic tricks. I Had To Laugh, as He Was Easy To Fool With A simple Card Palm. Fun Times..
It had to be a magnetic corner piece that he had in his trousers. He made sure the magnetic corner stayed in his pants at the end to end the trick wit clean cards. Now, if Penn said something like "Can you perform the same trick wit different 👖?" Then they would've had him there. I'm surprised they didn't in fact think of that. Or maybe they did, and they jus had to come to 1 solid guess. Like, they aren't allowed to keep guessing 3, 4 & 5 times. Ik that from previous seasons. Lol
You can see that the 2 of clubs has a red ace in the bottom left corner and its removed and dropped in his trousers soon after. He is very careful to hold the corners in place as they are the key to the trick. At the end the corners are dropped into the bag.
I don’t have the jumbo cards. I love traditional 3 card monte and sometimes throw in ultimate monte to really fool people. The fact that the audience would have no clue that it was ultimate monte, only P & T would and then he showed the entire card was amazing. Def wasn’t expecting that.
So it's kind of revealing in the final trick. He doesn't actually have the Ace and 3 in his hands. He has the 2 and the 3, but he has some kind of corner cover for the 2 to make it look like an Ace. You never see anything on the Ace except the corner. When he puts the cards down his pants, you can see that the ace corner you can see is the one that goes in his pants, and the closest to his body. Whatever is in his pants is pulling the corner off to take the Ace off and make it just look like a 2. Now, before he puts the card away - it actually does look like it's not the ace. At one point he kind of shows (at 5:34) the corner of the card, and it definitely looks like a club. BUT, he puts that clip corner down in the slot, so most likely it pulls the club off the corner when he pulls it back out. Seems pointless, since you can barely see it, but most likely P&T had a better view of it, so it was a pretty clever thing to do, even though it wasn't necessary.
Very clever, and a nice misdirection by Joe. There's an old video of a much younger Joe Monti performing this trick, and in this video it's pretty obvious that the cards would not bear examination after the trick like was done here. I enjoy these videos for entertainment; I don't have any background in performing, but... maybe this is how it was worked? 1. The cards were true (A's, 2's, and 3's in their proper corners) 2. However, on one corner of the Ace there is an overlain 2 of clubs symbol, and on one corner of the 2 of clubs, there is an Ace of diamonds symbol. 3. These overlays are removed (magnetically?) by inserting one of the cards in the box, and inserting the other in Joe's pants. The fact that Joe tugged up on the pants after removing the cards is very suspicious. Penn and Teller should have asked to examine Joe's pants! Joe anticipated Penn and Teller would be looking for altered cards, and pulled it off nicely!
Trick one and two. The Ace had one corner with the 2Clubs on it. The 2Clubs had one corner with the Ace diamonds on it. He only ever shows 3 corners of those cards at one time. When he does the last trick, he uses his pants to remove the AceDiamonds from the 2 Clubs and uses that weird contraption the he puts the Ace in to remove the 2Clubs from the corner, to leave all three cards clean. Check his pants and check the contraption to find those two pieces.
There is a magnetic Small Corner A^ on one corner of the 2c that he covers the whole time with the other cards and or his hand. So it normally sits on the 2C. When he finishes his routine the magnetic A^ is removed and hidden away (probs in his pants)
sometimes pen and teller know they are fooled, or they like the act little too much or they respect the magician a lot, that they just make a wild guess as a formality just to be wrong and give away the trophy. Very generous of them. For example, never ever that have gone up on stage to inspect something and actually found something that proved not a fooler.
True, but they HAVE asked if it would be okay to check the props and been told no, you got me at that point (I can’t cite season and episode, but it’s more than once).
@@Cthulhus_Mum thats true, that indeed has happened. I wonder what are the allowed parameters that pen and teller can do. if they are allowed to go up and check everything rigorously, they may catch many magic act that fooled them
He was about to say “Thooose cards?” and almost pointed at them but stopped himself (good move), which suggests that there were at least one more card involved.
Teller seems to agree that he's worked hard on this trick to earn the award.. but I think he realized the trick while examining the 2 C. Yes.. it was examinable.
That number 2 card has an ace overlay and the ace card has a 2 overlay i did a similar trick years ago just for fun. The overlays can be removed with a little misdirection and sleight
Wonderful act wonderful presentation and I'm deserved round of applause and trophy Great job Joe it was a pleasure to watch and was a pleasure to meet you in my shop years ago.

The 2 of clubs card has one corner as Ace of Diamond only in the corner part (ace of diamond corner stuck on top of 2 of clubs only for the corner part).

That was a great trick. I can usually figure out card tricks but I have NO CLUE!
All I can say is WOW!
That's definitely the word!
My guess is the cards were gimmicked in some way, it just was all removed by the end of the show.
The piece of the card is in his pants
Joe Monti's FU win was the best I've EVER seen on Penn & Teller's Fool Us!
Noticed the CW ad for Fboy Island at the end of the clip when he gets the trophy. LMFAO! 🤣
😅😂😂
I have a set of those jumbo cards and I got fooled by Joe's ending here. Very nice & congrats Joe!!
It was definitely the perfect twist to this classic that they never saw coming
Thank you
I don’t have the jumbo cards.
Wow.. OUTSTANDING
That was amazing. Way to go Joe Monti. Thanks, I like it a lot, Luke!
Glad you enjoyed it!
The end was mind boggling.. Congrats Joe
The trick was insane!
Really likeable and entertaining! Go Joe!
That's a GREAT trick. Good job, Joe!
So the card is not magnetic with the left top alternating?
Very clever, and a nice misdirection by Joe. There's an old video of a much younger Joe Monti performing this trick, and in this video it's pretty obvious that the cards would not bear examination after the trick like was done here. I enjoy these videos for entertainment; I don't have any background in performing, but... maybe this is how it was worked?
1. The cards were true (A's, 2's, and 3's in their proper corners)
If one were to purchase Joe’s Monte would we get the version of the trick he did for P&T?
Bruh, after that banter, he deserved it!
No idea how he finishes clean, but that's an impressive trick.
There is a magnetic Small Corner A^ on one corner of the 2c that he covers the whole time with the other cards and or his hand. So it normally sits on the 2C. When he finishes his routine the magnetic A^ is removed and hidden away (probs in his pants)
Congrats Joe you are AWESOME
sometimes pen and teller know they are fooled, or they like the act little too much or they respect the magician a lot, that they just make a wild guess as a formality just to be wrong and give away the trophy.
I'm can't tell whether Teller realised. He didn't fool me... but who cares, what a great act and SO much personality.
Teller would have figured it out if he had looked in the box. 😊
What is the gadget on your collar?
At first I thought he might have been using flaps but, unless he did a clever switch, there is no way he used flaps because P&T examined the cards...
That number 2 card has an ace overlay and the ace card has a 2 overlay i did a similar trick years ago just for fun. The overlays can be removed with a little misdirection and sleight
What episode is the clip at 0:09 ?
Wonderful act wonderful presentation and I'm deserved round of applause and trophy Great job Joe it was a pleasure to watch and was a pleasure to meet you in my shop years ago.
Beautiful reaction from Joe
Yes it was 🥰
4:15 is that another card attached to the 2?
Nope.
I used to have a taxi, but sometimes I just wanted to drive somewhere without it looking like a taxi. I had a quick and easy way of achieving that.
The main method (I think) was pretty noticeable, but secretly finishing CLEAN was👌
Thanks for showing this one. I Kinda needed an -it's not over til- message,.this was a great one....And its a helluva great monte
Glad you enjoyed it!
I feel like one of the most important parts of the trick happened when they camera cut to P/T at 5:49
