      3) why do you think it was not fucked up? Let me tell you why I think it was, and you can try to give some counter-arguments. Maybe I'll change my mind.
      - I believe we can discard the possibility that she was in on it (planted stooges are not allowed, I believe that includes Alyson).
      - Maybe she just decided to fake it on the spot. I doubt that.
      - I would assume that she was genuinely uncomfortable with the trick, and I believe he knew that in advance, based on her reaction to some previous acts. (Do you not agree with this assumption?) He then chose her on purpose, instead of Penn, Teller, or a random audience member whom they surely would have asked whether they are OK with a trick like that. She was faced with a decision to either not take part in it (which might be hard from the perspective of her contract, and also she knows it would look bad for the show), or to be part of the trick she did not want to. And he fully knew that and counted on that.
      I am sorry, but if forcing (peer pressure / contract pressure) someone to do something they find disgusting (albeit it being safe from the objective point of view, and her knowing it) is not cool.

It was the squeamishness that made us feel there are stakes here and Penn would have just been like, "ooh, scary, okay, this one." The effect would have been far less. And while I believe her reaction was genuine, that doesn't mean she didn't play it up a bit for the audience. That's the POINT (pun intended) and if you don't think she understands that then I don't know what to tell you. You act like he slapped her or something, I do believe there was no actual danger here and she isn't going to develop PTSD because of it. Take the stick out your ass.

    I really think I figured out a big portion of the trick. At 3:58 he acts like he is putting the solid shield in the envelope but he is actually putting it behind the envelope in his hand. There is another sheet in the envelope already with a hole in it (you can tell as he is holding the envelope awkwardly). Then a few seconds later you can see his hand, while holding the envelope and metal sheet, quickly drop down towards the table. That is when he releases the solid sheet, letting it fall down to a box or something he could kick under the table. This is why there is a cover on the table, hiding what's going on behind the table. Otherwise he would not need a covered table. He most likely did this same thing, but in reverse, with a previous envelope so it had a solid sheet when we actually thought it was a sheet with a hole in it. However, I don't know how he did the "final choice" thing. Maybe he would have a different script if she ended up picking it early or late.

    The envelope that was "supposed" to have the sheet already had a plate with a hole in it, and he didn't slide the show plate in, or the show plate was soft in the middle. And the envelope that ended up stopping it, already had a plate in it so when he slid the hole'd plate in, it actually had two plates in it.

      My current theory is both. An envelope is marked safe, and the initial "solid" plate is actually holed, with a magnet slider in the plate that is moved by madnets in the spiked ring. The other two holey playes are just that. There's a second plate that's also magnetized in an open position to start, that he slides closed. Rotating the envelope would be a good clue.

    Not revealing the contents of the envelope that blocked the spike is something many fool us magicians could learn from. It may slightly reduce the impressiveness for the general audience, but it leaves way more possibilities for those who think about how it was done. A lot of magicians does that one final part to try to add to the trick's impressiveness. For instance a truly sealed prediction may seem impressive to the general audience, but it would immediately give away that it was a force all the way.
    I also like the transparency of the design of the device. As an engineer I would consider Penn's guess of gimmicking the machine to be able to stop very difficult to pull off because of it's design. The spike arm is sort of springy, so any mechanism blocking it near the bottom would need to perfectly dampen the motion to make it stop convincingly at the envelope without oscillating and either poking a hole in the envelope or leaving an obvious gap.

    • @ArcadiaCv
      @ArcadiaCv 2 роки тому

      If you've ever seen a sawstop you could gimmick it that way. Basically have the tension mechanism that launches the arm like normal, and then have a ratcheting indexing gear that only engages when it's set. Would be fairly simple and could fit where the arm pivots. If you knew exactly how many times you were going to use it you could even ratchet the index the gear exactly so you wouldn't even have to set it, it would just automatically stop short on the 4th usage.

    • @MrXBT2000
      @MrXBT2000 2 роки тому

      @@ArcadiaCv the problem with any means of blocking the motion near the pivot point is that the arm is not perfectly rigid, thus it is difficult to perfectly dampen the motion so that it stops in contact with the envelope without overshooting and poking a hole. It can probably be done convincingly, but it is not as straight forward as it may seem.

    • @ArcadiaCv
      @ArcadiaCv 2 роки тому

      @@MrXBT2000 It looks to be made of metal, why don't you consider it to be rigid? A 12.9 bolt for example would have one of the highest tensile strengths of any known substance in existence and it would still look relatively inconspicuous in that contraption with a little rust paint.

    • @MrXBT2000
      @MrXBT2000 2 роки тому

      @@ArcadiaCv By not perfectly rigid I mean that if you attach one end firmly to form a cantilever, you can easily get some deflection at the tip - it is relatively long and slender. You can see the arm bounce a couple of times as it hits the end stop - that is what you would naturally expect from the springyness of the arm.
      Tensile strength is a measure of how much stress the material can handle before being pulled apart. As it is therefore irrelevant here, I see no point in pointing out the bunch of materials of higher tensile strength than that of the material of a grade 12.9 bolt. The elasiticity, Young's modulus, of such a bolt is in the same ballpark as for regular steel and iron, around 200 GPa. Hence it would have similar stiffness.
      If you were to put a hard end stop concealed near the pivot point, it would lead to much more pronunced bouncing than for the end stop high up on the arm, hence the need for a carefully dampened stop to prevent the tip of the arm from overshooting the stopping point and poking through the envelope. It would also be subject to quite high stress due to the short arm it would act on, and the consequence of a fatigue fracture there would not look good for the eye.

    • @ArcadiaCv
      @ArcadiaCv 2 роки тому

      @@MrXBT2000 So having some bounciness is fine, just as long as it's only bouncing backwards, and not forward. Tensile strength will determine how far the arm would bounce forward or deform due to impact strength when it hits the stop as it's inertia will make the end want to carry on. With steel bar and a stop and ratchet mechanism you should see less than ~100 micrometers of bending for a half meter bar of steel.
      It also wouldn't even have to get close to hitting the envelope either, the sound of it hitting the metal stop combined with the speed it's moving to fool the human eye would make it a more than sufficiently convincing effect. People who use interlocking ring magic don't move even half that fast and yet you can't visually see what's happening. The level of precision necessary to gimmick this device would be trivial.
