  • Is your air filter box rattling and producing noise. Here is how you can fix the most common faults! Check the description as well. Car is 1.6HDi Peugeot Partner 2007 (M59; ~96,000 miles), the same as a 2007 1.6HDi Citroen Berlingo.
    If you cannot understand my accent, subtitles are included.
    I will show in the video several of the most common failures of these air filter boxes. They really start to rattle once the pins are broken or the rubber grommets have perished.
    If you found this video useful, buy me a coffee: www.paypal.com/paypalme/morem...

    The grommets that I used are these (amazon UK): amzn.to/3qOVE2s or ebay: ebay.us/lT7jM1
    The rubber grommets that fit in the small holes for the airbox pins as far as I can measure are outside diameter 20mm, inside diameter 12mm and the internal groove 1.6mm. Not too sure, but I think this contains the same grommets that I used (amazon UK): amzn.to/2ppxZZ5 or abey: ebay.us/vBoZ9k

    I noticed that you have sandows on your thermic plate. Did you put them to fix the noise of the vibrating thermic plate ? What kind of sandow is that and how did you attach them ?

    • @moremolecules
      @moremolecules  3 роки тому

      Thank you for the comment. What do you mean by sandow, not too sure if I understand the word. I suspoect you mean the two metal planks that go over the alluminium turbo/exhaust heat shield. If it is that, yes, I did it myself. The top heat shield is really fragile, espoecially the mounting points and breaks quite often. First time it was broken I replaced it with a geniuine heat shield, but then it broke again. It is quite costly and I could not be bothered to buy these every couple of years. I used just metal plank and shaped it into place and drilled two holes for the bolts to go in. It basically goes from one bolt to the other on the engine, it really stops the heat shield to vibrate. If my explanation is not quite sufficient I can do a short video to show exactly where it mounts and how it looks like. Let me know if that would help.

      That is a good idea and suggestion. Do you by any chance have a link to the forum? I think the airbox on the TDCi is better design than the 1.6HDi, but I suspect it might be a bit difficult to put it on there, depends on the space. It is better as the airbox gets heated at thr back of the engine, where in the TDCi will be slightly colder.

    Thank you for all your helpfull videos. After our C4 grand Picasso started making strange noises from the same engine I decided to learn about the engine and try fixing things myself first before heading to dealer. So I got myself torque wrenches so now can torque from 2.26 and 220 nm and a ocd2 device, the noise was injector getting loose, torqued all down and of two other were also too loose yet not leaking, so that felt great to do. Next I changed to air filter, and cleaned inside pollen filters. Oil and filter are ordered and planned Saturday. My engine is harder to work on the air box for its way more covered up by other car parts. But your videos are excellent in showing the parts so once more thanks. One question, what did you use to clean your engine parts, it looks very nice being this clean and I want to do that too. I did regular plastic bits with regular cleaner then turtle wax interior plastic spray (spray on evenly distribute, leave two minutes then buff with microfiber towel and it looks like new, nice. But for engine and rubber parts I don't want to mess up things if chemicals starting interacting, you clearly found a way to make it look new so hope you can give some pointers.

    • @moremolecules
      @moremolecules  4 роки тому +2

      Hi Wim, great job with all the bits and pieces that you have managed to do! If you are doing a general service, I would replace the fuel filter as well, it is not too difficult, but you need to prime the fuel with the rubber pump several times. I have been asked a few times about the engine and how I clean it. I have never really cleaned it at all, although I would like to do it. I suppose from taking variety of bits and pieces and from touching it with hands/gloves it gets cleaned.

    • @Quibus777
      @Quibus777 4 роки тому +2

      Thanks! Great so I can look forward to a nice clean engine bay too :). And yes diesel filter change is for sure something in the planning, first get a bit used by the oil change. Then my wife who drives ( my eyes are not good enough for a license) told me there seems power missing at rpms the turbo ought to kick in. Not a lot and it was in response to me saying there is a valve controlling the turbo that can become dirty. If I remember correctly that part is pretty close to the diesel filter so checking that would be a good moment to change it. But it feels pretty nice doing things myself instead of going to dealer. Besides being cheaper it's great to start to understand what all those pipes and parts do.

    • @moremolecules
      @moremolecules  4 роки тому +2

      @@Quibus777 I am not too sure what part you meant controlling the turbo close to the fuel filer. Only the EGR valve is close to the fuel filter, but it does not quite control the turbo. The actuator valve controls the turbo and it is really just next to the turbo. You can clean the EGR valve, it could be stuck on fully open and that would reduce power on fully open throttle.

    • @Quibus777
      @Quibus777 4 роки тому +1

      Yes i think i read and talked about the actuator valve. Oh boy the EGR valve is behind the engine, next to airbox, sigh i could not remove the wiper arms (but again im new with this so might just not have dared to use enough force) so the parts bahind the hood and before the windscreen could not be removed, meaning no good access to that part of the engine, was hard to work there doing the air filter replacement. But will look into it for it seems needed to clean, then thanks.
      Oh its so nice you answer all questions, sorry i got more, the injector is now dirty around the outside and i saw its possible the clean even the inside and replace the injector seats, seems smart to do, though i am terridied to try it, would i be able to do with these tools?

    • @moremolecules
      @moremolecules  4 роки тому +2

      @@Quibus777 Yes, on some models it is difficult to get access to the back of the engine, but it is doable. It is also necessary for the EGR valve access. I would clean the EGR valve if the car has >60,000 miles or ~100k km. Now I clean it every 1-2 years. The injector thing, I have not researched exactly which seals you would need, but this job might be fairly easy or really difficult. Sometimes the injectors get stuck inside and you would need proper tools to get them out, like hydraulic power. If I were you and the injector is not leaking I would postpone doing this.

      Yeah, this happens well too often if the airbox is left with a few broken pins. The rest brake from the shaking. Really sorry to hear that. If you get a new airbox, you can purchase the improved (metal) bracket that holds the whole airbox, much better design. Of course more often than not and I think it is a design fault, the airbox rubs on the EGR valve and digs a hole inside. No gasses go through the upper part, but electronic components can potentially be damaged.

    You can use proper size rubber fuel cable/hose it can fit tight and it will hold with no problem.

      That sounds as a good idea, but where are you talking about to put this?

    • @bkingtz1

      @@moremolecules
      You basically use them same as those original rubber bands/bushings (whatever you call them) it doesn't have to be perfect fit like original, just tight enough.
      Al though on bottom part of the air filter housing you should put them directly on to those plastic ponits/knobs, because it will be easier to push them trough those plastic rings at the back of the engine, without pushing them out of those rings because hoses don't have those wider parts/rings for prefect fit so not to slide.
      Also when you find proper outer and inner diameter hose, those mushroom wider parts on plastic knobs will widen the rubber hose, you can use biax/diegrinder to grinde that part a little, so it passes through easier.
      Sometimes if I don't have proper diameter hose on the inside, I use smaller hose inside bigger one.
      I hope this helps.

      @@bkingtz1 I see, yes it should work. Next time this things starts vibrating again, I could probably do that with the hose. Thanks for the advice.

    I recently bought a Citroen C5 with 1.6HDI, and done my first engine service (oil & filter, fuel filter, air filter, cabin filter) and I can't believe what a pile of junk it is! Everything is plastic and clipped together or push fit. It's cheap and nasty...

      They are all the same! Show me an engine where they are not plastic push fit. To be honest, unless you buy something that is really expensive, even then they use plastic everywhere.

      @@moremolecules I can't imagine it's possible for anything to be worse! I'm probably not typical car owner, I've mainly had old 4x4's where stuff is built a bit more durable, but sadly got a new job further from home so needed to buy something that can cover more mileage with less fuel. Currently also own a 2002 Nissan Patrol which although does have some plastics, it's not paper thin and push fit. I know it's not apples and apples!

      @@GdaySport Do not take it wrong, I completely agree that current crop of cars are not really built to last. Although that engine is on par with everything else. Same plasticky stuff everywhere. 2002 Nissan Patrol is pretty decent. My humble opinion is that most current cars, the cheaper the worse the built quality is. Most of them are built to last 3-5 years and that is that.

      I completely agree, the Ford system of air intake is designed better than the PSA. Also, the slow is more straight and the crankcase breather hose is much better design thatn the PSA.
