“This is Saturday, January 4th 1964. DC is instructing audiences at home how to take souvenir photographs off of their television sets at home as the following Saturday (January 11th) would be their final Philadelphia show. By this time, the kids are (((REALLY))) directly upset with DC for pulling down their dance show. For the past few Saturdays, the kids had been hanging back around the bleachers and toward the back of the studio taking photographs often needing to use flashcubes as the hot studio lights were only centered over the dance floor. Saturday, January 11th would be the first time for many Bandstand dancers as well as audiences at home to hear The Beatles "I Wanna Hold Your Hand"....Even this new sound could not clear up the somber mood on the set that day. The kids had been crowding around the USA map during the breaks taking group photos of one another....Most of the photographs showed some long faces and a few teary eyes. At the end of that final show, the regulars crowded to be in the middle of the map more so than usual for one last final shot. As the cameras turned off, the kids went over to the coat racks and retrieved their coats and headed out to the cold parking lot for more photographs and LOTS of hugs. Finally, everyone dispersed and simply went home...Sad days for the Philly kids as American Bandstand unfolded into a new west coast format. (The dance shown here today is a slower suave version of 1963s "South Street" which had recently been the rage...This was not the '57 Chalypso dance.)“ -mrob75
“Walk Like A Man” was soaring up the charts in late February back in ‘63 (oh what a night!), but it didn’t become the Jersey boys’ 3rd #1 hit until the first week in March. The song was recorded while the roof was literally on fire on the floor right above the recording studio. Producer, Bob Crewe, ignored the fire, smoke and water as he insisted on getting the perfect take and only stopped when firemen broke down the door with axes and forced them all out.
Yes, the late Philadelphia dancers did a lot of this line dance, back and forth, spinning South Street in this episode, but it seems about right for a song about walking. I wonder, as has been commented here before, if the kids were just going through the motions at times knowing the show was leaving town next month. There aren’t a lot of smiles in this episode either despite them dancing to some of the greatest songs of all-time (imo). If true, I’d have felt the same way, but who knows.
Regulars dancing today are Gary Stapleford (1:04), Pat Carpino & Ailyene Silverman (2:15), Bobby Baritz & Michelle Liebowitz (2:40), and Barbara Warchol & Bruce Richard (2:48 far left).
These pictures may be some of the only existing images of Bandstand in 1962. Did anyone ever take pictures of their TV set back in the day?

I think what’s cool about the 60s is how drastically fashion changed in just a few years. The difference between what the teens wore in 1964 to what they wore in 1969 is really fascinating to see.
I've said the same thing. It's crazy. Drastic changes all around in such a short period of time.

Muna Mohamed Oddly enough, there isn't much of a difference between 2015 and 2020 in terms of fashion. Except, I see we are going for 1990s look, as opposed to a 1980s look that was popular years before.

I LIVED and loved each day of the fantabulous 60s...the best years.
I had a great time in the 60s....until I joined the Marines in 1964. Not a lot of fun after that, but I learned a lot about life.
Bobby Baritz was my favorite from this time so cute. Bruce becam Peggy Lee's hairdresser for many years. Both of them died before their time. Some really good dancers here. Wish there was full episodes

@Shave -a-thon and @ Jean Lankton You made me think of my older sister who wore that “flip” hairstyle in the early and mid-‘60s. I remember she would use “dippity-do“ with small orange juice cans to get that special curl in the back. My big sister danced on our local version of AB called the Top Ten Dance Party (that aired on channel 10, of course!) I always thought she was a TV “star,” not realizing it was just a local production taped at a teen rec center! Lol.
My sister did her hair the same way. Used OJ cans and dippity do!

"Whoopsie Daisy!" I haven't heard anyone say that in years!!! 😄 That's great! There didn't seem to be the mad rush for the camera lineup as was usually done. I know someone wrote a book about Bandstand, the Philly years. I think some of the Cali regulars should write a book about Bandstand in SoCal. @dancer Don could write a whole chapter on the 1967 dance contest and all its partner flippin' histrionics! Keeping in step with the Philly diaries, you could discuss who's gay, who's not and who cares? Worthwhile reading and a real page turner!!

It wasn't easy to get a good photo of a b&w console TV picture back then. You were dealing with the USA 525 line scanning method of broadcasting and usually Kodak box cameras with no control over the shutter speed. My Polaroid Swinger photos from 1968 were no bargain, either! What if you told Dick and the teens that in a few decades, you would be grabbing hi-def screen captures with ease using computer software and emailing or uploading them all over the world as you walked around with your smartphone? What a different world it was. That single digit for the city address code is also memorable.

I have wondered how to get a still shot of the old home movies from the 50’s parents used to take. They were these tiny tiny frames, as small as a child’s finger nail. Do you know if it’s possible to get still shots from this kind of film?
@@maureenhansen3308 You would need to have it digitally converted and either uploaded to a site where you can download it or have it transferred to a DVD. Then you can play and stop it frame by frame and capture it with the software built into the video player. 8mm films were 16 fps and Super 8mm were 18 fps. Digital video is usually 30 fps so you'll be able to capture quite a few stills, although you'll only want the ones that aren't blurry.

0:00 Since most of the old film rolls were overwritten with other shows, these might be the only graphic memories that we have of certain AB episodes
There’s something so wholesome and sweet about this even if it does look a bit stiff and nerdy😄.
One of the very last Philadelphia shows with Clark already looking slicker,uh,Hollywoodesque than he looked before.
Likely, he was bouncing back and forth between coasts in preparation for AB to be produced in L.A. after the end of 1963.
1964 ..Even though the British invasion arrived with the Beatles and Motown started ..1964 still was a doo wop year and probably the LAST year of 1950s sound and feel cause 1965 was a whole different sound and style of music and we all knew the 60s really started.
Just some observations:
1) Imagine if the director and cameramen then were able to use the light hand held color cameras of today. There would be so many more angles than just the front view of the kids. Those b&w monster cameras of the 1960's weighed a ton and cost a fortune.
2) The gals on the dance line @ 2:34 all appear to have adopted the Toni home perm hairstyle! Such were the days before hand held hair blowdryers!
Wouldn’t it be cool to see this filmed in high definition color and with so many more angles.
I think that hairdo is called “the flip” (?). It reminds me of Jackie Kennedy and Patty on “The Patty Duke Show”, Lol.
@@YCDTI It would be even cooler if Dick was videotaping in 1964 or if he was, that he or the ABC network kept the tapes rather than converting to kinescope and erasing them.

@@YCDTI my mom, her 3 sisters and my Mammaw used to periodically gather at Mammaw's house (Mammaw had all the rollers and requisite little papers) and give each other a "Toni" home perm. I was about 7 or so, and the whole process seemed to take days. You could smell that perm solution all the way to Main Street. Yuk! Everything had to be perfectly timed or someone would end up looking like they French-kissed a light socket. What a blast from the past!!!! 😀😄

Thanks Aaron for posting this wonderful clip. A fun tidbit I'd like to share is that the Four Seasons, Connie Francis, and The Delicates all came from the town that I'm from. My high school even named our auditorium after Connie Francis. The Delicates even have a street named after them. Also, my school even has a telegram sent by Dick Clark himself thanking The Delicates for appearing on "American Bandstand" in 1959. Say Aaron, do you have the full episodes from March of 1964? If so, can you air them this March? I know NRRA Archives has them and I love the Terry Stafford "Suspicion" and "The Shoop Shoop Song" by Betty Everett that aired during that time.

The line dance is called the calypso.If you notice in the very beginning,it always took a few seconds until everybody was starting on the same step.
For something Kinescoped, the quality was quite good. Aaron are all the 1964 kinescopes of AB still in existance? In answer to your question, my late father use to take snaps of the tv mostly for experimentation, he was an avid photographer at the time.
I’m not sure Andrew. They might be stored somewhere....I hope. I have 10 episodes from ‘64, all kinescopes except the VH1 Beatles episode, but that’s a small fraction of the ‘64 shows.

@@shave-a-thon3415 Yes indeed! On the VH1 episode from 04/18/64 (with The Beach Boys) Dick Clark mentions an address at the very end to send in entries to win a Beatles hairbrush.

I really enjoy seeing clips from the Philly days of AB, & this was a good one! You're right Aaron, not a lot of smiles or happy faces here, and some lazy dancing. But, just maybe, these kids had been taping shows all day & were just tired by the time they got to this episode.
What can you say about the Jersey Boys??? Frankie & the fellas were one of the greatest vocal groups of all time! This is one of my faves by them, but it's kinda hard not to have faves by them. Even in the 70s were they showed their versatility with the changing sounds, they were still able to be who the always were & STILL have hits, big ones!
A bit somber, but good clip. I imagine the house parties at that time looking like this towards or after midnight when you're tired as hell, but one of your songs come on & you just have to get up & dance to it! I'd like to see this whole ep myself Aaron, good clip man!
Oh, and I've taken pics of the TV as a child. They didn't come out good & I'm sure they were thrown out eons ago, but it was before we got a VCR. Lol
Excellent point Kevin. This may be the 3rd or 4th episode they taped in a row and they were probably taped during the holidays in December, so maybe they were focused on that too. It’s not bad, but I just wonder why this particular dance was so popular, particularly in this episode.
I never took pics of our TV before VCR’s, but I did try to record some shows on my tape recorder. I thought I was so clever, lol.

YouCanDanceToit! I'm also from NJ and I think that honor shall be bestowed upon "The Rascals" . All there songs are amazing and really catchy. They have a good beat and you can dance to it. The Four Seasons are also great.
this is 8 years before i was born but it still trips me out the ladies hairstyles of this time, i cannot grasp teenagers wearing those hair helmets, i guess its because of my age but i just can not look at those hairstyles and not think of old ladies.
i actually love the awkward dancing in these clips though, because to me that is what dancing should be. people that age should be a little awkward and it should just be about having fun, i hate how dancing in so many places and scenes has become this complete show off competitive sort of thing. the whole point was just to have some fun and not feel embarrassed that you arent as good as that couple over there.

Ddid they ever "Officially" do American Bandstand. I know they did "Where The Action Is" where they sang "Big Girls Don't Cry" "Walk Like A Man", and "Rag Doll".
