American Bandstand 1963 - Walk Like A Man, The Four Seasons

- Airdate: circa February 1963
I posted a clip a couple of years ago of the kids dancing to this song during a 1964 "memory day" where they danced to the hit songs of '63. This clip aired sometime in late January, Feb. or possibly early March (no way to really know the exact date) when the song was still climbing the charts. "Walk Like A Man" hit #1 on March 2nd.
Dancers: Richie Cartledge with Geri Ianetti (0:15), Gary Stapleford (0:22), and Bobby Baritz with Michelle Liebowitz (0:41). At 1:36, on the far left of your screen, watch for Pat Carpino and Sandi Bartholomew to walk around and go right to the front of the "line" for the last few seconds of the song as Bobby and Michelle clear out. I'm not sure if the more popular "star regulars" were allowed to walk to the front any time they wished but it does seem that the front "line" is frequented by the more popular dancers. I wonder if the other kids minded this, or maybe they were just happy to be on the show (?)
Brought to you by @jthyme - thank you, again, Gary
Thank you for watching!
Glad everybody likes this! What's weird is that I found it on a "reel" of odds and ends clips of old TV shows, movies and ads and this was somewhere in the middle.....just out of nowhere. Nothing else on the reel had any music clips of any kind. When I saw this, I knew I just HAD to send it to Aron so he could share it with everybody here.
I wonder how many more rare clips like these are floating around on tapes, DVD's, film reels etc... Hopefully we will find more of these.
@@YCDTI 😅🤭🤐
@Times Past Television Hi. Thanks for asking. I had/have lots of music shows like what Aron is showing, also have Shindig, Hullabaloo, Hollywood A Go Go, Shivaree, Something Else, Upbeat, clips from Sullivan, Red Skelton, Hollywood Palace, r&r movies of the 50s and 60s, UK music clips, Australian music shows.....99% of my stuff is music from the 50s and 60s.
@@jthyme7940 Somethin Else from Dallas. ..Northpark Shopping Center! ❤ Post it.
Great Philadelphia clip, Aaron - thank you!! I agree with mystery-ed, 1963 was an excellent year for music!!
Jesus loves you so much ✝️
Dear Aaron - many many thanks for this video. Like so much Aaron.
My pleasure. So glad you enjoyed it 👍
Please more!

If you could've harnessed the awkward energy in the room, it would have powered a small city.
Exactly- the group of girls dancing together look miserable! Why be there if you’re not having fun…?🤔
@@TSquare7741 Because it was better than being stuck at home with your square parents?
Awkward energy is always better than an awkward lack of energy. As a DJ I can tell you I've seen some extremely awkward situations while DJing events. Like when I did a children vs parents dance contest during an elementary school dance, and I put all the children on one side of the room and all the adults on the other side. Everyone was instructed to dance like crazy and do all their best dance moves. I started the music and looked up and saw that many of the young children were dancing but literally no adults were dancing at all. Instead the all just stood there completely motionless and staring at me for some reason with blank looks on their faces. That's how they stayed throughout the entire dance contest, and of course the kids won. A DJ friend of mine later told me that most people nowadays have no idea how to dance. So if you don't instruct them on specific dance moves that they need to do, they are completely clueless.

😂😂😂😂
Frankie Valli sounds just as good now as he did in 1963
Do the Watusi like I love Lucy!
Thanks Gary and Aaron. Yep, the regulars hit the front line by hook or by crook. LOL. According to early 60’s regular Arlene Sullivan production more or less monitored who got the face time during each episode. Those who were frequently up front and center were some asked to drop back to make way for others. Also, once dancers reached age 18 they were invited to leave the show. Far more rigid about the age constraints than what the future would bring. Great clip. Thanks for the upload!
Thax for sharing Don...
@DD One of the rare times where a teenager wanted a fake ID to prove they were actually younger than they really were. 😊

@@oldiesgeek454 oldies geek the memories . I could buy beer when i was 18 but before lol. we tried to look older . Go up to the cashier with blue jeans and a high neck collar with a loaf of bread , a comb, and a 6 pack. If they ask you for I D , you simply said i have to go get it it's in the car even though your wallets in your hand. Those cashiers had a lot of laughs.....

1963 was a great year for pop music!!!
and the end of america....
My mom died unexpectedly on June 10, 1963.
@@patricksomers5872
Sorry about that. My mother died in May 1966. I was 12. She had been sick my entire childhood.
This is priceless! What a treat hearing The Four Seasons. Our Philly regulars are bumpty bumpin' like crazy! What do ya say Aaron....could we do it??! Yeh man!
This was a great old clip .LOVE Walk Like A Man and its still played at parties and get togethers today. Much enjoyed thank you Gary and Aaron...
I forgot that Dentene logo! Wow, that 1 couple midway though looked nice in how they were dancing! Swing it Philly baby!👍🏻
It's Michele Liebowitz and Bobby Baritz, and yes, they were terrific together.
The year before THE BEATLES , THE SUPREMES AND ROLLING STONES !! AND FRANKIE'S HIGH PITCH VOICE HAS ALWAYS BEEN POPULAR !! LEO SAYER AND THE BEE JEES !! DANCE ON !!!!
Actually just months before. The description says this aired in February 63, the Beatles debuted in Nov 1963
I watch these old videos and think about where these people are now and what their lives were like as the years went by.

Probably similar to you as "Your Years Go By". 😉
A lot of the guys went to Vietnam. Some made it home.
@@KnockOffBeingFat yes they did. I knew some of the guys going to my high school , and when they graduated in 1965 they were drafted. Went straight to vietnam. Not all of them came back. And the ones we knew that did come back were never the same.
En todo tiempo han existido hombres sentados mirando a mujeres bailar con otras mujeres jajaja 😂
Loved the dance moves. Was born in '63
The Four Seasons' third #1 hit and a fave!
The music from the 60's, the 70's and the 89's was the bomb in music
I was just a baby then 😅
Ty for all these videos
These teens were about to experience tumultuous change...the British invasion, Vietnam war, racial upheaval, Kennedy assassinations, LSD, counter culture.... It was a decade of lost Innocence.
You got that right. Some for the better some for the worse. Musically for the worse in my opinion.
Cómo me gusta el Bobby de ese tiempo ❤
Awesome post!!
Great group "The Four Seasons". Even if you had been stranded on a remote island, and came back to civilization...the second you heard Frankie Valli's voice you knew it was them. They had a great career singing popular music. 9 or 10 months from this air date, the long skirts would be gone and the young girls would run to the stores to buy mini-skirts.
3 years out not until 1966 for the mini skirts

WOW!! When AB was on 5 days a week! Please keeping posting these gems!! On a side note, who were the guest stars who were going to appear on AB on 11/23/63??
Good question!

All Those that were Current at the time.

Then it was on Once a week, and Pre-recorded.
It lost a Lot of its Soul when it moved, and Many Fans. It Just Wasn't The Same.
will there be more clips from this episode?
This is the only clip I have from this episode unfortunately.
girls dancing with girls yep '' boys dancing with boys '' nope .
That was AB's policy for dancers back then. 😓
@@AdrianDeVore thank you . i didn't know they had a policy .
@@robertharrison2.055 You're welcome. I didn't know about it either.
I know, they were soooo afraid it would be taboo and controversial for the ABC networks to show 2 guys dancing together, straight or gay, especially down south. You'd be amazed at how much more tough some gay people are than some straight people. Like how that 'Boy Named Sue' was extremely tough ;)
Love the song and this fun clip! The kids look so carefree; you might never guess that, just a few months earlier, they'd endured the fear, stress and uncertainty of the Cuban Missile Crisis or that, several months later, they'd be mourning the assassination of JFK.
Amen...exactly
I'm glad AB's camera work was much better as the years went on. This clip seemed so static. I'm probably would've changed the channel
I had forgotten all about this song until it was the few lines to finish come dine with me it was great to hear it again
# 1 in early 1963-Great song!

No woman's worth, crawling on the earth! That is absolute poetry! POETRY! however,I'd change it to, NOBODY'S worth crawling on the earth! Cause women do it after a break up to and honestly NOBODY is worth that! NOBODY! Keep your pride and dignity!
Love these good ole dances, NOTHING beats the fun we had in those days 🎉❤
I wish I lived then
Amazing History thanks
What beautiful moves they have so beautiful love it. Those are the best days all natural beauty not fake.
I only recognized Pat Carpino. Otherwise I'd say this was not 1963.
dentyne gum...ughhh
Year before Beatles! All bets were off! We loved the Beatles then the Rolling Stones came out! That’s what we played in our almost band.?
0:33 John Travolta?😮😮in 1963
He does look like Travolta.
It's literally a crying shame this America is disappeared from the face of the Earth
I was born in Feb 63
This is not a song to dance to. Fab by the Four Seasons.
some of the women and the man are smaller then the others
I like Dentyne gum
