- Hi Everyone,
In this video I am showing how I fix the problem of sticky resin on a canvas painting. I probably haven't quite perfected the technique yet but it seems to sort out the major issues with sticky epoxy resin.
If you want to see a more in depth tutorial on applying resin to a painting, please check out this video - • Easy Tutorial: Applyin...

I was looking for advice on uncured epoxy issues and find the most soothing voice on the planet!
haha aww thanks!!
It seems like it is always a mixing or stirring problem. Very helpful!
Once you mix the resin in the first container, pour it in another dry container, and mix it there for one minute.
This way you will avoid unmixed hardener and resin.
Thank you! A few other people have said that too :)
What is resin I just started watch these type of videos.😕😕😕😕😕😕😕😕😕😕😕😕😕
@@jasleenstinnie1501 resin is a type of epoxy its use to put a glass look finish to art work or table tops also people use resin to make glass like designs between wood. There’s many types of epoxy/resins art coat resin, casting resin, UV resin, top coat resin which is also called quick curing resin. There’s glue epoxy used to seal stuff the super glue won’t be strong enough to hold or adhesive problems.
I will try that!
Thanks for taking the time to film this tutorial
I'm pleased you've enjoyed it!
That artwork is awesome
Great video Emma. 👍 May I suggest that it may be better to mix the resin in a container that s not so wide based so that the resin is not so wide spread when stirring but instead in a taller, smaller based container as it has more depth. This makes the mixing more thorough and even. 🙂
Hi Molly - yes good idea - thanks! :) x
GET TO THE POINT, jesus 10 hours for every step
Yes, I agree with Miss Molly
Thanks, I'll try your fix for sticky resin and get back to you.
Thankyou very much I was worried about my project as how to fix it ....U gave an idea thankyou very much
I'm glad to help ☺

Thanks, I have just the same problem. I'll try tomorrow to fix everything 🤞🏻
good luck! x
Thank you so much I have a large canvas and I have to redue almost half of it.
oh no!! Get sanding! I hope it goes well repouring
nice piece-almost cried for you
Thanks for the tips!!!! Is there a tutorial on how you did this painting? I love the lines!!!
I'm glad you liked it. I didn't actually film a tutorial on this one I'm afraid. I pretty much made it up as I went along. I used sponges to create the background and then liquid gold leaf to create the lines.
If it’s not to sticky, you can pour right over the top. I did sand a little but didn’t know if I should. Worked very well.
amazing!
Thank you. I am new to resin. It is good to know what to do just in case.
Thx for the tip... you just saved me from having to sand off my new countertops and start all over!
Amazing! Glad I could help :)

You prolly dont care but if you are bored like me during the covid times you can stream all the latest series on instaflixxer. Have been streaming with my girlfriend for the last days :)
@Ezekiel Franklin Definitely, I have been using InstaFlixxer for since december myself :D
Thank you...I needed this help!
I needed to know how to fix it, not to avoid it! The long lead was not necessary, but thanks anyway. :-).
I was trying to fix a glass fibre strengthening on the nose of my R/C aircraft to resist nose plants better. It is sticky all over, not local spots, even though well mixed to stated ratio before use. It seems painting it tied up the surface energy and stopped it being sticky any more, so I solved the problem buy still don't know how to avoid it when remaking fibreglass structural repairs.. So far the anser is "Paint Them".
Oh dear, I'm sorry I can't help you with this one. I've not used resin on material other than wood and canvas. It could be something to do with the temperature of your room? I always check out Artresin for answers - www.artresin.com/pages/faq
@@EmmaRave Maybe. I have to do it in the Garage! Not allowed to make the house smell of resin........ and am in the perenially cold and damp UK. Not moulding. I am basically painting it onto surfaces and the fibreglass itself - actually the base is expanded polystyrene fuselage of an R/C plane - which, surprisingly, seems OK with it.
Hi! apparently warming the resin in a bath in the bottles before mixing helps. Ive seen a video where you can apply fresh resin on top of sticky resin without having to scrape it off like you did. i saw this on @artresin youtube channel. :-) thi sis a very helful video though. thank you
Yes I heard about the warming up in water method - I'll have to try it when I next do a pour. Glad the video helped 😊
Thank you so much ma'am
Thank you!
i needed this! i was about to cry after i found wet spots on my project lol
Oh no! It's so annoying when that happens! Glad this could help. I hope it comes out well next time 😁
having a Gram/oz weight scale for measurement is very precise to work with 1:1 ratio resin I recommend stonecoat resin and mix with cordless drill and pale in a bucket (home depot medium size 2q is fine) than the container your using for about 2 to 4 minutes however stonecoat make their own resin and it is by far on the most lovely to work with even for art. (expensive resin though)
Thank you so much! I've seen a lot of people use the drills to mix the resin and I think I might do that myself soon. I'll check out that resin you've recommended :)
Mixing resin with any power tool is not the best idea. In fact most resin mixtures are strongly against power tool mixing because it can create many too many bubbles that will actually ruin your entire pour. I'd suggest just thoroughly hand mixing.
ARE YOU SELLING THIS PAINTING OR CAN YOU MAKE ANOTHER!!! It’s so beautiful!!!! I absolutely love it!!!
aww wow thanks! I'm afraid I've already sold this painting. I have a few for sale on my website - www.emmaravens.co.uk if you fancy having a look :)
Will putting hardener in a spray bottle and spraying tacky parts fix this?
I'm sorry I haven't tried that. Maybe ask at www.artresin.com/pages/faq
Very nice piece, thank you for sharing 🙏🏻❤️
Thank you :)
Really useful - thank you for sharing!
That was awsome... thank you for the Tip ...by the way your painting is wonderful.
Thank you :)
I like the tutorial great work
Hey.. it's a beautiful piece..I am a beginner so m inquisitive.. you have used the resin and hardner in the same amount.. but what I have learned is the amount should be 3:1, can you please solve my query..
Hi, I think it depends on the brand of resin and hardener. If you check on the instructions it should be clear as to the ratio you should use. I've seen some that are 2:1 or 3:1 or 1:1 so it just depends on the manufacturer.
@@EmmaRave thank you so very much..😊🌈😊
Touching wet spots. Rock solid.
Hi Ema please please help ...I resined a bunch a rocks with resin only and thought I used hardner. this was a beginner dumb error soooo dumb. anyway they are all wet and sticky. do you know what I can do t0 fix? I hope its fixable so please let me know either way many thanks donna .
Thanks for the tip!!!
Thank you so much for your help! Did you do the entire piece?
Yes I did so that it was level
@@EmmaRave Thank you!
Maybe try a smaller container to mix smaller amounts so you can mix it more thoroughly 👍🏼
Appreciated this video. Ever hear of gelcoat? I'm building something out of fiberglass. Instead of using plain white gelcoat, I'd like to get funky, artistic. Any ideas?
I haven't used gelcoat before so I wouldn't be able to help you on that one but I'm sure you'll come up with some good ideas! I always get art inspiration on pinterest.
@@EmmaRave do you dilute it any to get it to flow
@@truckerdaddy-akajohninqueb4793 No I don't. I use 1:1 ratio on this resin always.
WEAR A MASK!!!!!!! And gloves too, resin is extremely toxic. You can develop problems with your heart, lungs and also allergies that wont allow you to work with resin ever again. Plus, if you sand it, the dust is way more toxic that the resin gas. You need to work on open spaces with the right ventilation. Check out fb groups named resin is not your friend and also check all the safety rules that we need to follow.
mine says non toxic
i go outdoors
I totally agree I am having those symptoms
Dear Emma, I've always used epoxy resin - 'Ice Resin' in particular - and its always worked brilliantly. Ice Resin is crystal clear and self - doming. But a while ago I bought some UV resin and a UV light and when I used them today, the resin set but was really sticky. I've used a 3d adhesive/ varnish to cover the stickiness. It's called 'Judikins Diamond Glaze' and it's wonderful stuff, but I don't know how long i should have left the UV resin under the UV light. Do you know anything about UV resin or is there anyone else out there who does? Thanks so much, love Amanda in Australia. :-)
Hi Amanda, thank you for your comment :) I haven't actually used UV resin I'm afraid but whenever I have a problem with resin I go to this website called - www.resinobsession.com and look at the forum pages. You may be able to get some help there. Good luck!
Emma, HELP! I'm working on a coffee table and I have added several coats of resin and have waited about 3 months, it is still sticky
So I thought I would sand the sticky parts and now I have dark spots. How can I get rid of the dark spots???yikes!
Hi Emma, so sorry to hear you are having these problems. Have you gone down to the paint layer and taken off some of the paint underneath? I haven't experienced this issue but if you ask on this website, they are great for answering resin FAQ problems - www.artresin.com/pages/faq
The bucket is probably too big. Maybe a smaller cup would be easier to maneuver when mixing both together. Thanks for the video, it was very helpful
Thanks - yes you are right!
i would suggest not scraping the resin or activators. pour themout as much as you can into the mixing container no scraping. also use a mixing container that does not have corners or ridges on the sides jus smooth surface.
Thanks for the video. I did photographs on wood canvas and clear resin, I have sticky spots and spots where the resin looks like dents and maybe not spread correctly. Can I sand it down? Would it ruin the photo?
You could sand down the sticky spots a little but with the dents a new pour should fix that ok. It shouldn't ruin the photo as long ans you have a thick enough coat of resin over the top of it. Good luck!
Watch at double speed. Save time.
Once you redid the table how long before it dried
Around 24 -36 hours to completely harden
Hi I was wondering if you have any suggestions made a bottle top table and it is lovely but a section had sticky epoxy we tried to sand it but seemed to make it worse and cloudy... would really like a suggestion on how it can be fixed? Thanks, Emma
Hi Emma, sorry to hear that you've had this problem. If you possibly can - get off the sticky resin by scraping it off if the sanding isn't working. Then clean the canvas and do a re-pour. The re-pour should make the cloudyness mostly go. Have a look at this blog - very helpful tips - www.artresin.com/blogs/artresin/oh-sh-t-series-episode-1-sticky
Emma Ravens will try thanks
I made some tiny mold appliqués with casting resin. I got it on my hands and just wipe it off. I rinsed the cups with a little water and soap but they were still sticky. I scraped off the overspill with my finger nails. This was the first time I ever used it. Now I'm hearing that this stuff is extremely dangerous. Stop touching it. Now I don't want to use it. I did get sick but it could just be a cold. But please look into this everyone. God Bless.
Ok hopefully I get an answer. My situation is that I have a make up tray that I’m making. The last more isn’t wet or sticky just soft. So how can I fix this?
It still means you haven't got the right ratio of resin and hardener or the issue could be because it has been exposed to heat or humidity. do any of these seem likely?
I m having a slight problem with the piece i m working on is. Soft and flexible after several days i doin t know if my apt is too cool
Oh no 😬 has it not hardened at all? Is the whole piece soft or just parts of it?
Is it ok to touch it without glove?
No not really, you could get wet resin on your fingers and its a nightmare to get off.
First, thank you for the video and the painting is very cool! I have similar “sticky” issue except it is with much smaller 3D pieces that came out of a mold. The side that faced down into the mold is fine, ironically, and luckily, as this is the detail side. The top flat side however is still sticky. I can’t really pour on it as I don’t want to cover the detail of the piece, and I don’t want to dome it. So I was wondering about carefully painting another coat of resin on the flat side with a small paint brush. I have never used a paintbrush with resin. Do you think this would work? Thank you ~ Newbie.
Yes you could. I would suggest using a disposable foam brush though so that you don't get the swipe marks that you may with a paintbrush. Hope it goes ok!
Did this work? I've had a few issues like this as well and wondering how that extra top coat turned out?
I use clear nail polish yo coat mine when sticky :)
I'm making a fishing rod and use resin to bond the thread wrap, my first piece I think it got too cold because I was careful to mix right and pour right ratio but it's still a little sticky after 30 hours (it's a 6hour set resin) 😅
Oh dear I'm sorry to hear that. Which brand of resin are you using?
If what brand but it's a special rod making one 😆
ah I see, maybe it has slightly different curing methods.
Watch your own video and you will see your mistakes. The resin you scraped from the cups and scraped on the edge of your container will never get mixed and could end up that way on your pour surface. Worst of all you poured from your first mixing container! You should have poured one more time into another container, mixed again and then poured on to your surface. Good luck on your next pour.
Thanks Billy. I'm still learning so I'm pleased to get more advice from fellow resin users. I will use your advice on pouring into another container! Luckily for me, this one cured fine.
The container of my resin is now sticky I can't use it anymore due to the stickiness of the resin, do u know how to fix it? 😢
You could try this method but only if the resin hasn't hardened yet. Once its cured its really hard to remove. ua-cam.com/video/cyCZqda5nB0/v-deo.html Hope that helps!!
Nika G before it sets wipe the container out quickly with antibacterial hand sanitizer gel. 😊👍
What happens if you can see the canvas after getting the sticky parts off? Should I add more coloring in that white spot or leave it as it is? Thanks! Hope to hear from you.
Yes, you should add more colouring because you will be re-resining it so that will be fine. I've added colour even over the resin before and then put more resin over the top and it works fine. Just make sure the paint is completely dry before you put more resin over the top - leave it a few days.
What kind of resin do you use.?
Its called ArtResin - link in description :)
@@EmmaRave can it cure by uv light? i want to know can all type of resin can be cure by uv light?
@@ekayunia4265 no not all resins are cured by uv light. you have to check if its a UV-curing resin.
START @4:51 YOU'RE WELCOME .
The problem I’m having right now is my painting come out with Some holes in it and so I put masking tape around it it flooded it it looks beautiful except now theres ridges around it and are so hard I don’t know how to get them off can you help
I probably would have done a re-pour or you could sand it down. Have a look at this website - great for resin troubleshooting - www.resinobsession.com/forums/forum/resin-troubleshooting/
Clean the canvas with alcohol first, oils will repel it.
Hi if my artwork only has a small area of tackiness/stickiness, do I still need to re resin the entire artwork? My stickiness is on a canvas that is loaded with glass work. So a small area is tacky. I don't have any other issues but that.
You don't have to resin the whole thing again. I like to because otherwise I don't get a smooth glass look if my painting is flat but because yours isn't as you have glass work involved then you shouldn't really notice. just make sure its a fairly thin coat.
@@EmmaRaveWhen you say a thin coat, if it was 1-1 ratio, do I do 1/2 and 1/2 ratio this time for the small area of tackiness, which is on the glass itself only. Thank you for your quick reply and your answer was what I was hoping to hear!
@@barba4885 just do a smaller amount of resin and hardener. As long as you put in the exact amount of each then you'll be fine. Just make sure it covers the whole tacky part and make sure you've sanded the tacky bit down first. Check out this website for more help. I always go to them when I need tips - www.resinobsession.com/forums/
@@EmmaRave Thank you Emma, I did sand it down and it worked only on the sanded part. Luckily this was just a trial and error small canvas. So thank you for your response and I will check out that website as now I have other questions, such as when to stop wiping the drips of resin on the sides of the canvases.. urrh
@@barba4885 Yes, working with resin is really difficult and it takes a long time to learn but you'll get there! The website should definitely help :)
should you be touching that with bare hands?
you sound like winona ryder
isn't she American? ☺️
put the items in the freezer for a few minutes several times
Has that worked for you?
@@EmmaRave yes then u can demold it i spray it with clear lacquar aswell
Nice tutorial. However, I was very nervous for you watching you pop your air bubbles with a blow torch an inch away from your fabric curtains. Plz be careful. Your whole apartment will go up in flames!
Yes yes I had a few people tell me that! I will be more careful next time!! I need a studio already 😳
My fiberglass people sold me a paint stick with a very sharp edge, so it's easier to stir and scrape the edges while I'm mixing. I get a little OCD about stirring 😅🤣
I should be more OCD about stirring!! :)
What happens if your resin is hard but a bunch of fingerprints stay behind when you hold it?
Then it hadn't cured long enough before you touched it. Some resins take longer than others. How long did you leave it before you touched it?
@@EmmaRave if that's the case, how do you fix the fingerprints
@@missyoxford1379 I'm afraid you'd have to do a re-pour if you wanted it perfect.
Try a polyurethane varnish on top
I have but some bugs in resin, but when i touch it some fingerprints are left behind. I used laminating resin. I cannot scratch the resin off since the whole thing is rubbery. Can i do anything else, would it harden if i leave it for a couple of months?
Hey, I'm sorry to hear the resin hasn't dried properly. Maybe there was a problem with the ratio? It's not going to be easy fixing the problem as the whole piece is rubbery. Once the curing time has past there isn't really a way you can harden the resin.. Have a look at this forum - I find some really helpful tips from other artists www.resinobsession.com/forums/
@@EmmaRave thanks, my unkle said he also had this problem, so he just scraped off the surface and sanded it. Hope that works. Ill check the forums aswell
@@notananimationchannel yes its so annoying when it happens!!
I thought this had to do with weed
😂😂😂😂
I did the same : (
it's such a pain! At least hopefully you've been apply to apply some new resin
mam i love you
Who else came here for weed related purposes?
😂
I have a tacky spot or two on my epoxy board..I plan on planing it down anyway so can I just sand the tacky spots and then run through planer? I dont want to pour more epoxy on board top side is fine and bottom has few small tacky spots not curing. Guess my basement was cold because I'm very ocd with mixing/measuring
It's so frustrating when you think you mix so well and you get a few wet spots!! I think if you are able to get most of the stickiness out then it should be ok. Maybe try washing the tacky bits with a bit of soap first too. Hope it goes well :)
@@EmmaRave Ok thank you. I tried scraping it off last night and it came off like a gummy something and then I sanded it and now it's good. Hopefully wont have these issues next time so more mixing and temperature has to be perfect I guess
@@facebookmakesmesick Amazing! I'm so glad it's come out well :)
Just use a ROUND container that has a flat bottom with a "sharp" bottom edge, a large clean butter tub is perfect. I use a stick that is given out at the BIG BOX stores for their paint that lets me really scrape the sides and the stick's flat end makes for a good bottom scraper to get a good mix. The most important point I've found it to always use TWO sticks; one for the mixing and the other as you scoup / pour out of the final mix.... The initial "stirring stick insertion" into the filled container will most always come in pretty much total contact with either part a or b... That is why TWO sticks :-)
That's really helpful thank you so much. A butter tub or maybe an ice cream tub would be a good idea too. I'm always finding out new ways to apply resin - it's such a specialised field but I love it!
