  • Hope you enjoyed this, let me know if you have any questions in the comments below! :)
    Key takeaways:
    ------------------------
    MISTAKES:
    1) Avoid buying tons of chess material (courses/books), you'll most likely make the mistake of buying the wrong ones or buying too many at once!
    2) Studying opening theory too early! If you're a beginner/intermediate chess improver, you don't need opening theory yet. All that knowledge goes to waste if your opponents don't play exactly what you learned
    3) Not playing enough games! Most improvers watch too much material without applying any of it.
    FIXES:
    1) Ask for a recommendation from a high quality coach and buy one course/book at a time. Dabbling in too many at the same time can be counterproductive. Go through one and apply it in your games
    2) Learn and UNDERSTAND the basic strategic ideas of all the openings you play. If you understand them, it won't be difficult to figure out why your opponent's (non-theory) move is a mistake
    3) There is no substitute for experience, make sure to play as much as possible (without burning out, of course). Apply the things you learn
    BONUS:
    1) Tweak the application / practice based on WHAT you learned. If you learned an opening, it's much better to practice it through 20 blitz games than 5 rapid ones. If you learned a way to checkmate, practice it in a custom position against the computer instead of hoping you reach it in a game
    2) Set a GOAL for each game to make application easier. For example, you could say to yourself before the game "I want to play a perfect opening". If you do, you call that game a win regardless of what happens next and the actual result of the game.
Remember - the goal is improvement, rating will follow!

Tick, tick, tick - guilty of all three of these! (My rating is improving though, so that's a small positive). Great video, thanks Sandro!
