    Thank you so much for taking the time to make and upload this truly excellent video. Mike was such a brilliant man and it was so interesting to watch but tinged with sadness too after his recent passing. Another cycling legend has left us and so many of us will miss him greatly. It is clear to see that you and your family were good friends with Mike and I send you my sincere sympathy as well as all his nearest and dearest.

    I had Windcheetah 611, and regret selling it some ways. I’ve always admired Mike’s designs, innovation and irreverence. Great to see him still vibrant and doing what he so clearly loves. As for his lack of job offer post Giant - let’s have him doing special projects at Brompton. Mono-blade, enclosed chain case, aero seat post - could transform an already legendary UK design.

    Thanks for making such an informative record of Mike's brilliant designs. This week I have just finished re-reading his excellent book, Bicycle Design. It is incredible that his fertile brain has to an extent been sidelined by the actions of the UCI. I cannot help wondering where bikes would now be if progress had been embraced instead of being banned. Fortunately, he has found laid back bikes as a way of amazing us with his mind.

      @@gregordonnach7970 I'm not worried one bit.
      I'm surrounded by a group of guys that total over 500 years of acquired skills and knowledge, and a fair share of mistakes as well.
      There is precious little we can't design, do, make, repair, modify, hack or support.
      It's those that think we're just a bunch of know nothing ol' farts that are missing out on all that we've learnt and, like you said, that I feel sorry for.

    • @Michael-jl8gj
      @Michael-jl8gj 4 роки тому +7

      Cycling as a sport is about the riders, not the bikes. That's what the UCI is about. Cycling hasn't become a better, more enjoyable competition after the invention of carbon fiber, it was just as good when Fausto Coppi was racing steel frames, and if we were still racing steel frames there would be more people competing and having fun instead of saving money for carbon.
      People want to see a sport that they can relate to, athletes racing on the same bikes they have in their garage. If you want to get into competitive cycling today you're looking at a big investment and that's not good for the sport, the last thing you'd want is to make that gap even larger forcing people to shell out more cash to be competitive.
      To sum it up: I know it's controversial but cycling would be more fun if the UCI banned power meters and carbon fiber. Sports are about muscles and brains, if you want to see nuts bolts and wires watch F1 or human powered vehicle races.

      @@Michael-jl8gj Personally I much prefer seeing design and technology develop and share Mike Burrows' views on UCI for this reason. But thanks for sharing your views, as the decisions of the UCI seem much more logical now. This is sad for designers, engineers and the like, but probably good for people who follow cycling more closely.

    • @MrDrunkenMoose
      @MrDrunkenMoose 4 роки тому +2

      @@Michael-jl8gj I'm sorry but the UCI is stupid. I know the philosophy but if thats what they are after they have failed miserably. Bikes still skyrocket in prices, while not pushing any innovation. manufacturers will just put the money into stupid developments that dont get you anywhere and don't trickle down to cheaper bikes. Just the fact that they have rules on socks just tells you its shit. The problem that this shit is boring as hell is the format of the TDF and the way teams are structured. Its basically hour long tactical snoozefest for one sprint in the end.

      @Bobbie Tuggboat you make money by getting sponsors, you get sponsors by getting fans, you get fans by making cycling entertaining and accessible to a wide audience, wether the UCI succeeded in this is up for debate. But, none of them ever made a bike not even half as good looking and innovative as the Lotus, none. And then in the road side, the tcr still the best looking bike, from which cervelo copied a lot for their R line, still giant has more slooping, much cooler bike the giant, if it wasnt for the giant branding of course.

    My favorite thing is the structural chain case -- it puts the cog near the point where the hub connects rather than at the other end of the cantilever. It might make it tricky for multi-speed or freewheeling, but maybe not so much. OTOH, it would seem to make everything a lot stiffer vertically and not so much laterally.

    One question about the TCR Aero forks, were they designed by Mike?
    I think the Aero Forks were banned on road bikes by the UCI in 2004.
    Giant stopped putting them on road bikes in 2004 with the Giant Aero 2 TCR.
    I have the 2003 Giant Aero TCR with the Aero Forks.

    "UCI are stupid people" unequivocal truth. The UCI 3-1 ratio and double triangle and production mandate means the now pro's are on heavy, overbuilt ill fitting bikes, consumers are are temperamental, overpriced, and deposable bikes. Elites should be sub 10 lb/4.5 kg bikes designed to last length of grand tour appox 120 hours (or even a season so training and racing are the same) like how F1 drivers get 3 engines per season. The point of UCI production mandate was make it affordable but after the abandonment of B worlds for developing nations they made is clear weren't interesting in developing the sport in South Asia, South East Asia, Sub-Saharan Africa, Caribbean, and Latin America (edit I forget Central Asia, Pacific rim, North Africa and middle East) The pool of potential endurance athletes from east Africa is almost unparalleled accept for the Tarahumara in Mexico. I also don't understand why Shimano doesn't put forth a full World Tour team. Japan has the depth of racers, interesting and corporate structures. Anywho the result is at least US or state cycling turned into alternative to polo for bratty adult children or tech employees who live an and around urban centers like NYC and SF. Long gone are days pick up racing and full calendar of USCF races. Now it $120-150 farm to table Fondos... bleh...
    One final point on UCI getting ride of 8 race world cup and replaced it with World tour truly was one of stupid as most short sighted things they ever did.
