My girlfriend is Irish and as soon as she saw this previewed in the last video she said within 5 seconds, "looks like Ireland"! We've been waiting ever since for confirmation. One of her relatives actually studied at Maynooth, funnily enough. Great vid, Tom.
I was full sure when tom realised it was either Britain or Ireland, he would have started on Ireland as there are far fewer universities. Maynooth would have been one of the top 5 possibilities.
I could genuienly watch these all day. Just like your straight line videos, you've hit gold with this format and I hope you do lots more. Watching you have to quickly scrub up on a new topic like church architecture to get the answer is what really makes it
Wow this is extremely fun to play along. I first searched "British Universities" and couldn't find anything with the same exact spire. I saw your list of costa spots and went down the list of countries until I hit Ireland. One of the first google images when I searched "Irish university chapel" and the exact distinct chapel came up as Maynooth. From there I quickly was able to find St. Josephs square and pinpointed the exact spot!
I went to uni there and saw this after your Lake Huron search. New to your channel. I was really willing you on. Your limit of searching only uk databases was holding you back on this one. But well done on getting there. Your initial gut feel of university was spot on.
I actually got this one in about 5 minutes. Here is my process: - School looks pretty British - Checked which countries have Costa locations - Some Costas in Ireland - Celtic Cross like things on the church make me think it's Ireland - Church looks pretty tall - "Tallest Churches in Ireland" - Find St Patrick's College Maynooth - Find the spot based on the paths from Google Earth
Great to see your thought process. I am late to the party but I alsp found it in about 5 minutes. - search for costca locations - very distinct overall view of university campus - church looks neogothic - neogothic is often used for catholic churches, not protestant, at least in my country - start with Ireland since it is predominantly catholic as opposed to England - google neogothic chapel university ireland
I bet there's been so many searches for those related words since the video was released associated with words "maynooth", "ireland" or people clicking on those pictures that google has started to rank them up in the results
@@snooks5607 Did this search originally only minutes after the first video featuring this photo was released a few weeks ago. With words like university or school I still don't seem to find the right spire so I guess all the words related to this building have not been saturated in google results.
I happened to only take 3 minutes or so, but only because I watched insofar as you mentioned Ireland, and that was where I started, rather than starting with the U.k. I realized that the crosses seemed more intensely celtic than one'd see elsewheres and the phrase I typed was "irish universities" which lead to a keyword that let me find it.
I spent quite a bit of time working with summer students there and thought I recognised it at the start.. it was so lucky cos there are two parts of Maynooth and the part you first zoomed into is super modern and I almost thought you'd miss the 'old' part across the road! Glad you found it! What a ride!
I studied there too, and was thinking exactly the same, very big difference once you cross that road. If he had abandoned it after only looking at the North Campus I would have lost my mind

that looks like a borgo (small Italian village from the Renaissance or Medieval age). there are 300+ of them in Italy, the website I Borghi più Belli d'Italia (the most beautiful borghi in Italy) could come in handy. I haven't checked it, but at first glance it reminds me of Tremosine sul Garda because I've seen it posted on Reddit countless times
As someone who works near/has family members that went to maynooth it was painfully entertaining seeing you slowly work up to the final result, best work so far!
A very quick one for me! Similar to others I began by googling countries with costa coffee, saw Ireland was a big hit (and got very Irish university vibes from the photo) and looked up a list of Irish universities that had photos attached. Enjoyed Toms architectural deep dive to no end 😃
At every sneak peak of this picture in previous episodes, I've been feeling the British Isles and a clear university vibe. As soon as "Ireland" popped up on the Costa list, it took me about 1,5 minutes of googling pinpointing the exact location. Mostly sheer luck on my part 😊
Please stop using the term British Isles to include Ireland. It’s an archaic phrase coined by the British in days of empire. People say it’s a only a geographic term but it is politically loaded and expresses dominance of Britain over Ireland. It’s not used in Ireland at any level and not recognised by Irish government. Also British government have stopped using it since 1998 when Good Friday agreement was signed.
So how I figured this one out in about an hour (Just stumbled across your channel today after youtube recommended me your first one of these Geo detective episodes - Playlist please?) was the Costa Coffee cup with paper straw. Paper straw meant it wasn't a cup the person purchased themselves, that it was purchased at a location. That narrowed it down to almost entirely UK or Ireland. The backpack screamed university student and we have several universities locally that co-opt old buildings like this. So likely a university (or old church) in reasonable distance of a costa coffee. I initially looked in the UK, but nothing really fit when looking at universities. Then I noticed a fair share of costa coffee locales in Dublin, and while looking at universities near Dublin, maynooth university immediately stood out for all the reasons it did for you, plus is was directly in between two costa coffees in close proximity. The only other one I managed to even attempt to get faster than you was the Grand Fork one because of the business name you didn't google. But it didn't take you distinctly longer to find really. Great series, keep up the excellent work!
I know it's not in the spirit of the game, but a screen shot and a cropped reverse image search with Lens revealed this one on the first search. Tom's a better man than me, I couldn't have resisted a peep!
"Welcome to Mastermind, and can our first contestant take the seat" "Name?" - Future Tom Davies "Occupation?" - Straight line walker "Specialist Subject?" - Gothic and neo-gothic churches of the British Isles 1740 to 1910.
Yes, Tom! I'm so happy you figured it out, I studied there for three years, and recognised it immediately the first time you showed it a few episodes ago I left a comment in the previous episode, where I said "you could learn from a Nobel winner, and borrow a book from a Pope" - the main lecture building is named after John Hume, who won the Nobel Peace Prize, and the library is named after John Paul II
Tom, you could have found this much more simply by identifying the camo trousers as being the Desert Battle Dress Uniform not used by UK or any European forces - except the Irish - and then just done oldest Irish University buildings :)

I'm sure he didn't add the text on purpose...looks like his voiceover script he forgot to take out...oof.

@@vina5484 Send Tom one of these sexy girls pics and he'll figure out where she is!
GeoWizard forgetting the Costa for 5 min. Interestingly, my first thought was a university in Scotland
I actually got this one in about 5 minutes. Here is my process:
- School looks pretty British
- Checked which countries have Costa locations
- Some Costas in Ireland
- Celtic Cross like things on the church make me think it's Ireland
- Church looks pretty tall
- "Tallest Churches in Ireland"
- Find St Patrick's College Maynooth
- Find the spot based on the paths from Google Earth
Great to see your thought process.
I am late to the party but I alsp found it in about 5 minutes.
- search for costca locations
- very distinct overall view of university campus
- church looks neogothic
- neogothic is often used for catholic churches, not protestant, at least in my country
- start with Ireland since it is predominantly catholic as opposed to England
- google neogothic chapel university ireland
The vicarious thrill of you finding the location was huge, i felt relieved!
One of the absolute best series on UA-cam right now! Excellent work
"College church spire" was my magic search combo. Brings up more than one correct image on first pages.
@@ImaginarySpace which is weird because it is a university not a college
Similarly, looking for 'ireland university courtyard ivy' also brings up the building on the first page.
@@dading why so specific, its 6th result on just "ireland university"
This is easily my favorite series you do. Really feels like a detectives case. So many different avenues of sleuthing. Keep them coming!
Every time I am floored and incredibly impressed at how much time and effort you put into finding the locations. Just amazing.
This series is amazing! True entertainment! And I think we ALL felt that feeling of joy when u found it! :D
1:55 Well Tom, the architecture doesn‘t look german at all.
Also no Costas in Germany
Actually correction... There's one

German viewers: "Looks like a British university"
Tom: "Might be Germany"

I love this series so much. It's so much fun to watch someone do something they're this good at.

Imagine a theme park with a part that is designed to look like an Italian city xD
Could also be Malta from the little I've seen of Malta through geoguessr and random images
Croatia, Dubronvik is also a contender, considering the hilliness and architecture :D
that looks like a borgo (small Italian village from the Renaissance or Medieval age). there are 300+ of them in Italy, the website I Borghi più Belli d'Italia (the most beautiful borghi in Italy) could come in handy.
I grew up in Aberdeen. Most people disregard it as a "small" city. Brings tears to my eyes to see it getting mentioned
At every sneak peak of this picture in previous episodes, I've been feeling the British Isles and a clear university vibe. As soon as "Ireland" popped up on the Costa list, it took me about 1,5 minutes of googling pinpointing the exact location. Mostly sheer luck on my part 😊
I don’t know why he didn’t follow up that Costa lead a little more
Please stop using the term British Isles to include Ireland.
"I've learned a lot about triple thingy-ed windows."
Have you, Tom? 😉
I know it's not in the spirit of the game, but a screen shot and a cropped reverse image search with Lens revealed this one on the first search. Tom's a better man than me, I couldn't have resisted a peep!
"Welcome to Mastermind, and can our first contestant take the seat"
"Name?" - Future Tom Davies
"Occupation?" - Straight line walker
"Specialist Subject?" - Gothic and neo-gothic churches of the British Isles 1740 to 1910.
you're just a legend, Tom. please, never change. great job on finding it, cheers man!
Yes, Tom! I'm so happy you figured it out, I studied there for three years, and recognised it immediately the first time you showed it a few episodes ago
I left a comment in the previous episode, where I said "you could learn from a Nobel winner, and borrow a book from a Pope" - the main lecture building is named after John Hume, who won the Nobel Peace Prize, and the library is named after John Paul II
I'm from maynooth and I saw the picture on the thumbnail and I was just like no way I know where that is. Well done getting it though that was tough.
12:14 "By the time I reached Dundee, I started to question reality a bit."
There's got to be a Gloryhammer reference screaming to be let out here :D
after seeing the white text on white background, the clicking copy&paste was the cherry on top
I’m loving these intros at the moment 😅
I’ve Learnt a lot about churches
...
Also Tom: Triple thingy windows
Tom, you could have found this much more simply by identifying the camo trousers as being the Desert Battle Dress Uniform
not used by UK or any European forces - except the Irish - and then just done oldest Irish University buildings :)

this is by far my favourite series of yours. the notification gets me excited always
Tom made bigger effort in studying the history of architecture than I, an actual architect.
This was fun to watch, because usually I wouldn't be familiar with the locations myself, but now it happened to be a place a visit often. Maybe the search was overcomplicated, but got there in the end and that's what matters!
Did you forget to hide the white text in the video editor? I really don't think you intended to leave it in the final render, did you?

This is my favorite series. We want more of it please. Fantastic job Tom.
i looked the picture up with the reverse image search, and it really worked well. It instantly show many pictures of the university
interesting
yeah google lens did the same
Oh dang. I stayed in Maynooth for a week like 15 years ago. When you first pulled the picture up I thought "huh, feels like Maynooth."
As an art historian specialised in church architecture, I'm *very* impressed Tom was able to identify the style of the church as gothic revival/victorian gothic. I mean, without any prior knowledge on architecture, that's really remarkable.
This is hilarious and one of my favourite videos by GeoWizard! I've watched so many recently and they always crack me up. Love the amount of graft and persistence in this one
Finally an Ireland one. Eire Abu!
Can't wait for next episode! I just watched all the episode of this serie in a few hours.
5:00 Tom searched "how to delete all google searches" LMAO
Such a soft-spoken gentle voice but sneezes like a damn bomb went off, love it.
You should go visit that university for a video! I'm sure Irish fans would love it
i live right by the uni so it be dope xD so cool seeing it being guessed on here haha
