When you looked at London the first time I recognized the building on the right in the picture. It was so frustrating watching you go through all these cities knowing you went so close from the answer.
I wondered about the Shard being the glass disappearing, but thought the brutalist building didn't make sense. Had a quick check, found it immediately, saw Tom look at the building from the other side of the river, then sat in pain for 10mins.
I was screaming at him because I saw the two buildings! I think he had a moment where something deep in his brain recognized it bc he goes "oh" but then moves on LOL

Dude, I freaked out when you picked the EXACT SPOT, but across the river. I could tell by the horizontal building on the side with the glass building on the other side. I checked and there was the skyscraper with the white and "gold" building below it. I'm literally watching this having already found it, but only because you did and didn't realize it lol You're incredible and yet so not incredible simultaneously. It's incredible.
I caught it his first visit too, had to open up google maps on my second screen to double check. I just visited London last autumn and remembered that all glass building that's on the left of the picture, it was really cool and I even took pictures of it, so when I spotted the other building, the one with the distinct horizontal beams, on the other side of the river it was a dead giveaway.
As a Spokane native, I was convinced that the bridge was a different bridge in Spokane, so I did some of my own investigation before Tom just to find that it was not the right one. Imagine my surprise when it was a different Spokane bridge, the Monroe Street bridge! A British guy knows my home city better than me lol
I haven’t even watched it yet but I saw the bridge in hi next video in the series and came here. I thought it was the Monroe street bridge but a mirrored image from his phone. It looks like he’s in the south side in the park they redid next to the dam.
18:54 "This could be London for all I know." 19:07 "Is that in London?!" 21:15 "Let me just check a couple more spots in London." Lol, the second half was painful to watch in true Tom's fashion, I love it. I'm not even from the UK and upon seeing the silhouette of the skyscraper, I immediately thought "That's The Shard, innit?". So I went to Google Maps, looked at The Shard from the river in 3D view and confirmed that there's indeed that white and gold building. And right across it was that alley the photo was take from. Literally 15 seconds. Surely Tom will solve in a minute... *looks at how much time is left in the video* ...oh god, oh no. Kudos to the person who submitted that photo, got Tom good.
The Tunkhannock Viaduct you stopped and said "wow" about is an amazing structure. It is the worlds largest concrete railroad bridge and it creates its own weather.
I have been watching this channel since the first Mission across Wales attempt and I'm not geographical expert, but when I looked at the second picture and thought "I feel like that might be the Shard" on a whim, looked it up on Google Maps, put the marker down and it immediately lined up with the building in the foreground, I was kinda proud of myself :D
Loved this video as always. As a Londoner, I instantly recognised London for the yellowish brick wharf building (the hospital) opposite and, strangely enough, the furthest street lamp. I thought Tom's strategy to look at the street lamp was a good one. I often think you can find the city just by looking at the type of street lights they use - sometimes they look generic but there is always something distinct if you look to the detail. But in the case of the picture in the video, it was actually not the lamps Tom was looking at that would have given a clue, but actually the furthest lamp in the photo, which is an iconic and heritage-protected design along the Thames in the centre. I recognise I'm biased by hindsight and local knowledge with this one, but if Tom went with his guess that it could be London, a search "lamp posts Thames" would have instantly returned a result which could encourage a closer look at London as an option! Look forward to the next Geo Detective, and all the other content
As soon as he pressed into street view in London on 19:25, I was like THATS IT!! He had the mouse over the exact spot but spent 10 minutes drawing lights instead haha
These Geo Detective videos are the reason I subscribed to the channel, and whilst I love the Geoguessr content as well it's really great to see this series return.

I’ve only been to London once for a couple of days and even I knew where the second picture was taken the moment you pulled it up on the screen. It was so frustrating watching a Brit struggle to recognize The Shard and Thames riverfront…
That 2nd one, the first time you zoomed in I immediatly thought it was butlers wharf and paused to take a look, only took me a few mins to figure out that it was actually London hospital, just a few hundred meters away. Continued watching and then laughed at loud when you out the man down on the wrong side of the river in a spot that was very likely in the frame of the photo and you looked directly at the spot where the photo was taken from
Damn, you have a lot of different avenues to this channel. I love all of the variety. Even if it is all relatively geography based, it's pretty awesome the types of original content you've amassed
i was so sure that these candidates put in fun names and were in on the joke just to find out that all of the people in the series "pinpoint my shit and i will answer" dont have real names. keep it up! i love it!
You pulled up the first picture & I said to myself "Is that Spokane?" It's strange seeing a place from my own neck of the woods coming up on a channel like this when so often the content is in far flung corners of the world
Regarding the second image, I've been there late last year on a business trip. First time in UK. Somehow it was my first thought when I saw the photo and it took me around 30sec to pinpoint the location (to 500m, didn't bother with exact alley). It was really funny to see a "local" to spend so long on that one :D
I live in Spokane and when that first picture popped up I thought "That looks like the Monroe St Bridge I drive over all the time... no way, it can't be. The chances of that..."
This is such a great series. It would be cool if you were able to put the reference image "always on top" in a corner (like your video), so we can compare it to the other things you look at.
Great video, the detective series just over a year ago is what got me into Geoguessr in the first place, not so much the actual geoguessr content. Go figure! You have way more patience than I do, that's for sure. The "spaceship building" in Columbus you briefly mentioned is COSI (science museum), interesting that it was floating, it is most assuredly on the ground.
That was great acting, pretending not to recognize the shard and even showing us the photo location from the opposite side of the Thames without giggling! Well done!
As soon as Tom originally plopped down on the river in London, I recognized the buildings the picture was taken between from across the river. Then he proceeded to draw a lamp post to reverse image search 😂
The literal Monroe Street Bridge!! Always insane to see Spokane pop up in these kinds of things lol. You should visit the area sometime Tom, lots of diverse scenery and you might be able to do a straight line mission across the Idaho Panhandle 👀
26:52 I have a tip for you, which you probably already knew, just forgot. There must be a word for the frustration of knowing where it is in the first few minutes (the Shard one) and then spending the next 15 mins watching Tom struggle with it!!
I have a suspicion of what Tom's next challenge will be, I love trying to figure out things from the file names I see. If you go back 3 months to the last geo-detective video, there is a folder on his PC called "Peak District 40 miler" and my guess is that this is the next mission. I might be totally wrong but it's always fun to guess
I didn’t get which skyscraper it was either, but like, I was almost yelling at my screen. The vibe of that city was super present, especially once you pointed on the markings on the floor. It was just so clear which city it is, it has such a distinct vibe

So glad this is back. This where I discovered you and while I enjoy some of your other work it is Geo Detective that I love. Please please please, more Geo Detective!
these are seriously so much fun. thanks for continuing the series.
That Norm Sipper round I recognized the shard almost immediately. I'm not even British! I just visited last year for one weekend. feels good to beat Tom for once!
You are way better at this than I will ever be, but I have to say I was slightly disappointed you didn't recognize the Shard.
I'm doing this to two of my friends that are in vacation in Europe... each time they post a photo on social media I find the exact place the photo was taken within a few minutes and they are freaking out. Lot of fun!
God I hope we get more of these soon. They are so good. I feel proud on the second one I thought "I think that's London" there is a building in Oklahoma city that is kinda similar but the meters told me it wasn't Oklahoma.
Tom you are unique, incredible at complicated remote detective work, but the only image you've had where I knew exactly where it was, you fumble around the globe drawing lamp posts!! Amazing! Keep it up, I love this series!
"If this is the shard it's conceivably London" - Great UA-cam understatements #362
The first video in this series is what brought me to your channel and I've been hooked (and subscribed) ever since. Keep up the good work!
You've done this just to boost our egos haven't you? I was so proud that I recognised the shard straight away. Another superb watch!
From the moment I saw the second photo I was screaming London, then gradually losing confidence as you ruled London out a few times.. Glad to be right at the end!
18:46 "It's not Toronto because there is no river". There are two rivers in Toronto: the Don and the Humber... As seen in the map he was looking at. Never change, Tom!
i didnt expect that the first video i click on while taking a break from studying for my bridge engineering subject was gonna be a video about you researching on bridges but here we are
Finally, Missed these series so much!
When the shard picture popped up I got it literally as soon as my eyes set on it! We were at the shard at Christmas last year on a foggy day and walked across into that exact place as we wandered to the walkie talkie 😊
Great investigating!
I subscribed a few days ago and loving the content that was some good detective work. Looking forward to watching more of your videos.
I am so glad you are continuing on with Geo Detective one of my favorites you do. Much love Rissy from Vancouver BC 🇨🇦
Got the shard one almost instantly, even with the fog you could see the angle of the building, that combined with the short width of the river got it for me
This has really become my favourite part of your channel! It´s really amazing what you can find with the sort of time and dedication you put in. And, I think you do it a lot faster now as well with all the training you´ve got. Please continue doing this forever!
One tip, though - whenever you find sites that you like as much as that one with the bridges - you might just be able to bookmark those. At least we can where I live, maybe it´s not the same all over the interweb ;)
