23:30 I beg to differ. SME's are likely to be replaced by LLM's. Today someone with zero knowledge about a specific domain can use LLM's to identify and rectify problems. Also with equals like Private GPT and even Open AI for corporates, there are ways in which LLM helps give recommendations based on the companys knowledge bank. So not sure what SME's would be doing in that case?

The truth is, after 40 there is a cost involved for the individual, you choose career or family. I think most men suffer in their 40's. The most messy phase of life. No one understands you, neither wife, kids nor parents. Sadly micro family is a failure and thats the core issue.

Even if you keep learning new tech after 35 or 40 years age. Still there will be young talent who will be more cost effective . So the point is with increasing age, your chances to survive will always be low and will keep reducing

Im in IT for 24 yrs. I have worked in 6 countries, im 48 and i suffered two layoffs.
Don't worry, learn new things on the job.
My style is, look for long , slow running activities, more people intensive activities and try to optimise it. You dont have to learn new things. Just try to optimise what you do on daily work. You will survive at work for long.
    Im still hands on coding.
AI can be done even in Microsoft EXCEL. AI is a concept , as i gave an example above, find the problem, identify repeated problem, solve it, monitor it. You will be a star in your office.

The problem is continuous learning. I mean continuous learning sounds good when you are young. But when you age, it's very difficult to study everyday. But in IT, everyday study is required these days because of AI. And when you age, you have responsibilities which will give you less time. So responsibilities, growing age, less energy, less studying time will lead to chaos.

Actually people in their 40s shouldn't worry if they've been smart so far with their money management. They've worked for about 15 years and have another 10 to 15 years to go. If they've used their salary so far to invest and create a good corpus with good asset allocation, then they shouldn't worry. But if they haven't been smart with their money, they will struggle and this is what we see with most today. There's no point of upgrading yourself with more knowledge if you don't manage your money properly. So, one skill that most IT people should attain is money management. All this upgrading and learning new technology will only help their employers and not them. Make salary irrelevant in your 40s with an investment corpus so big that you can throw the resignation on your manager and walk away. Unfortunately, most people can't do it.😊

This is true. Myself faced it. It is extremely depressing. It has made me sit back and wonder what next, and i hsve still not figured it out. Dont have business sense. And yes I am an introvert. I was being pushed into management... which i hated though mostly everyone appreciated my work ethic, because i believe in giving clear expectations and then i dont nag or interfere. However, frankly management takes not much talent except clear decision making. A lot of people undervalue this skillset. Then they make foolish people as managers and cycle continues. Basically in a cost cutting environment, middle management layer easily gets axed. I hate that i don't know how to earn independently. I am very impressed by UA-camrs, but i dont wish to face the camera. I also find social media too toxic. People just go around being negative thoughtlessly but it affects your mental health. I am not blaming anyone. This is reality. If u have not been good at politics to rise to higher management then your age will play against you in middle management roles. I wish everyone of us in this predicament find a way out. I am still trying to be hopeful...but its tough keeping a positive look. Worry creeps in, while savings deplete. And more thsn anything...being discarded like this....affects your self confidence.

But my java skills are still relevant. Being more experienced makes you invaluable. Problem is Indian IT is ruled by shitty service firms like TCS, info etc. And, experienced programmers can't utilize their skills fully in India. If you migrate to US or Europe, you'll make tons of money with experience.

Thats what I wanted to say. Indian IT services companies wanted to run the show with kids. They are less bothered about quality of delivery and innovation (for innovation, they are aquiring foreign companies). And there is one more branch growing in these IT companies is Infra Support (ITIL), where qualified engineers are being utilized for password reset, taking and restoring backups, server management, onboarding and offboarding of employees etc. So the clear message for young IT talent is leave your mother country. After 40, there is very minute possibility that you will get any IT job in India, even if you learn any latest technology. So to survive in your current job, keep attending those useless calls, preparing and presenting those flase 'all green' ppt's and if you have latent of buttering your manager, concentrate on improving that skill :D

So if companies kick you to the curb at 40 you can easily live off your savings/side income. Materialism is curse and will keep you slave to the system untill you drop dead.

There People are still working on many legacy technologies such Main frames, AS 400, SAP etc... from the past 20 years, better work life balance (exceed expectation there is meet expectation here). If you have to evolve and study even in your 40s then what sort of life a person is living. This industry has also trapped great talent’s because of lucrative fresher salaries, who are much capable of learning more in 20s , can crack difficult exams in 20s when they have energy. But if you get trapped you have to live this shit life for whole life coz everyone is coming in this industry and doing almost similar stuff .

Frankly , after 40 years either you should be able to get to a position where you can make minimum 1 crore per year as salary apart from taxes. Or you should be able to retire and live your life with all the savings as pension. I personally want to retire in next 5 to 10 years. Need to clear off my home loans and wanna visit every temple and stay some time in Himachal Pradesh or Uttarakhand where ever I get chance to Live near a serene environment. In IT as per todays cost of living and land rates, you might be hardly buy one home and make some savings. If you are lucky you might be able to buy one additional home and that's it. in INDIA.. Even going to US or UK is not that profitable these days. 1999 till 2010 were great days to go abroad. Now its really of not much use. Cost of living in other nations increased so badly and salaries are not increasing. So My suggestion is to either innovate and make some product , or just do some business etc the point here is to always have plan B. Avoide over spending and save as much as you can, do investments. prepare for retirement. Or else even after 40 years you will struggle for money.

Looks like he has spent all his life in IT ‘services’ company. His advice on technical skills and hands on role is absolutely wrong.
Good software development only comes from experience look at people’s insights from Western markets from their first hand experience.
You can make tons of money with hands on roles. You will always be valuable and least insecure.
People who become managers in Indian IT services companies they are least useful in the market. Their world view is absolutely wrong.
They are basically unemployable in the US and overall Western countries.

I will give a cliche example - when machines came to replace men in doing muscle work, people complained about losing their jobs - but today new kind of jobs have been created ! So things will evolve , programmers will still be needed to review code written by machines (example) ! Reducing our population, and of course letting machines do much of the dirty work for us , is a good idea ! The 1.4 billion population of India is a very bad thing actually.

Face to face communication help you to build professional and personal relations. Try to help others and contribute to solve other problems. 3. Be disciplined and serious of your work. 80 percentage of the current generation are not serious abt the work and deadline. If work is assigned to you ,manager should not ask status, try to complete beforehand with high qualiyy. 5. Learn new technology and be expert in multiple skill. The unproclaimed new rule is that the retirement age now is 45 to 50 years. That's being done in the name of layoffs. So dont waste your life being a slave to private companies & techie jobs. "I've witnessed a unique trend in the IT industry over my 20-year career, one that diverges from common perceptions. Today's young professionals, often fresh from prestigious institutions like IIT, enter the field with a strong desire to engage in core development work. However, this aspiration typically lasts only 2 to 3 years. Soon, external pressures mount - from peers, family, and their social circle - driving them towards managerial roles.
The prevailing belief in the industry is that significant salary increases only occur when one ascends to a managerial position. Consequently, many IT professionals feel compelled to rapidly climb the corporate ladder, aiming for leadership roles within a few years of joining.
However, this transition to management comes with its pitfalls. Many lose touch with the very technology that drew them to the field. Yet, in an industry as dynamic as IT, maintaining technological proficiency is crucial. Continuous learning and skill enhancement aren't just recommended; they're necessary. It's a daily commitment to stay relevant and effective in this ever-evolving landscape."

Guys, if you are in top 10% at any time in any organization at whatever cost, you are in top 10% because you are better than other 90%. Now its very basic that other 90% are getting something because of these 10%. So if you are really good at whatever you do, you don't need to worry about your career. The day you start moving from top 10% to top 20% and then so on, you are doomed. So try to be the best in your tech/role than 90% others, you will be saved.

In my last company, many in the top 10% were laid off in the name of cost cutting. They were drawing high salaries so they were fired to save cost, period. Similar cases were observed in faang companies recently as well. Your conclusion is correct but a bit outdated.

@@chetanshukla768 My only point was to emphasize on honing skills rather than worrying too much about things which are not in our hands. Indian IT market is relatively younger than outside market, we started somewhere in 90s and even if someone has started career in 90s, he/she/whatever is not retired yet, so statistically IT employees doesn't seem to retire. Same statistics shows that it's difficult to get a job after 40 and as human beings are much curious about negative things, these type of videos spread fear than help.

I have read all the comments. Sadly, these people here are-
    1. Very adamant about learning new things.
    2. No broad mindset
    3. Live for the day mentality
    4. Blaming family responsibilities to learn new things
    5. Not open to adapting to change!
    6. Blaming companies for hiring young talent instead of retaining the older aged staff!
    7. Paranoidal about moving from company to company. Comforting their position due to the relationship with the PM.
    8. Blaming AI that it will take over.
With these mindset and old school issues, we cannot go anywhere. Information Technology demands constant upgrade of knowledge!
