How to Make a Car Engine Coffee Table

- Here's how to make your own custom glass-top engine coffee table using parts from a scrap car!
A car engine makes an excellent centerpiece, TV stand or side table for a gear head. This engine table is made from a Toyota/Lexus 1MZ-FE engine from a Lexus ES300.
The engine is removed from the vehicle, separated from the transmission and sub-frame and stripped down. All the parts are cleaned with carb cleaner and a toothbrush. The engine was then mocked up, with the pistons bolted to the cam bearing bolts at the head. The next step was disassembly and a thorough cleaning with engine degreaser and another toothbrush. The engine is then dried and cleaned once more with brake parts cleaner before painting.
The paint applied is Rustoleum Chrome and Rose Gold spray paint. The timing gears, connecting rods, fuel rails, heads and camshafts were painted in rose gold (bronze) to give an accenting look. The piston heads, block, timing cover, heads, intake and oil pan were painted chrome. Small black accents for the thermostat housing and dip stick were painted black.
The engine comes apart in six main pieces (two heads, block, upper oil pan and intake) to be easily moved. A glass top compliments the engine's bright-work so you can see down the pistons and inside the head.

I thought...that's the cleanest 3VZ block I've ever seen. Wait...I guess not. 1MZ has an aluminum block. Much nicer to look at than a rusty old piece of iron. An iron block would be RIDICULOUSLY heavy too.
Cool project. About 2 years ago I went to Vegas and saw these piece's of art (the alien animals) all made with car parts and about 6 feet tall from the movie terminator, that was very cool, they use shafts, chains, springs, pretty much everything in an engine. I also wanted to saylike all your videos, very informative and funny, keep up the good work.
Fantastic work! Definitely want to see more.
I would have filled the bottom of the engine with enough concrete to make it more stable, sed thicker glass & added rubber furniture pads to the pistons. But then I have only made furniture out of high-end leather car seats, as a drunk driver broke my back, so I needed a desk chair with lumbar support...
With that said, I have heard of outdoor tables being made from a dead car. Basically, they remove everything put the metal, steam clean it, and cube it in a car crusher. Note: Most car crushers are only used to flatten the cars for the shredder, as cubed cars get stuck in the shredder. However, many tend to have the ability to cube scrap cars for international transport...
Haha, you gave a link to your brothers toothbrush. Classic!
Yep, the toothbrush is a must for this type of job as you saw in the video
_People like you, who can recall where every one of a thousand screws fit, are highly admired by myself!!_ 😁👍
I don't recall it, I'm just organized when I take things off to bin them correctly or screw them back into the hole they came off
next, sofa set out of car back seats.
good ingenuity.
Ah that would be a good idea!
I got a back seat row from a mk2 golf laying around... and I'm experienced in woodworking. I'm gonna give it a go!
I used the rear seats out of my old astro van in my garage so we could sit around and play card games. Just bolted rigid legs on and they were good to go!
@@speedkar99 Hard Rock Cafe here in Stockholm has half a car inside, starting with the sofa and all the way back to the fins of the rear. Looks very cool!
"My wife actually prefers the timing belt cover.." That's frikkin classic, dude! Gonna say that randomly for the next 3 days to respond to people. GREAT CONTENT, THANK YOU!
Haha but it was true, I asked her right then and I had to install it
Your brother really supports your videos
He sure does help alot
Next: How to make a coffee table a car engine
this is amazing. i've seen some people making coffee machine with engine. you should have an engine coffee machine on top of the engine coffee table.
Yes, would love more projects like this.
Awesome. I might have a Honda engine coming in soon. Would be fun to tear into since I've never been inside a Honda engine before.
Beautiful going green . Good use for the environment:)
It was an Lexus Engine before, now it has become a piece of Art, you could Auction it may be some Lexus Showroom would buy it for a hefty bid I guess. Would be a great piece for a Lexus showroom.
That would have been cool, but I sold it not long after.
That chrome paint is awesome!
It sure came out pretty good!
Great looking project. Well done!
Thanks
Great video my man. Well done
Awesome build!
Thanks
Thanks awesome. We have a coffin-coffee table in our living room. If I did the decoration I’d go for this.
Coffin?
speedkar99.... a coffin shaped coffee table. It is 3 foot wide in the shoulder 2 foot wide at the head and feet and 5 foot long and the shoulders is 18” down from the head. Old school box not the modern size and the inside has reinforcements so nobody can get in it but it opens on a hidden hinge. Painted in black like most everything in the gothic house we have.
Only one word......WOW. Some serious time and planning. Your really something bro. Amazing concept and so creative!
Nice job Sally! Great video
Thanks Ken
Awesome project 👏👍!!
Thank you
Wow Thanks! I want to try to make it with my old aircooled volkswagen engine :)
I'd love to see it. Send me pics on Instagram or Facebook
Love this..good job speedkar
Thanks, glad you enjoyed the build.
Awesome video as always, had a few workshop clients that did this years ago.
Awesome! What kind of engine did they use?
@@speedkar99 Can't remember that well but I think a V8 and a motorcycle engine amongst others. In Africa, the guys do some ingenious stuff. Lol
Great job and enjoying your channel, here in UK!!
Thanks
Awesome!
What a creative idea.
Thanks
If wifey says it looks nice , it looks nice no more questions
Nice art table. I see some artistic potential there!
Thanks. I like how the color theme came out
Very Cool! Perhaps add some caster wheels, felt or silicone feet to make it easy to move around.
Once it's set down you can build it in spot. I have an Infiniti engine under my TV and haven't had a need to move it. Wheels would be convenient but might make the chances of it rolling away or smashing the glass dangerous
@@speedkar99 No sir, that elephant isn't leaving the room on casters unless your house is built at a 45° angle, like on a mountainside. My first thought was "casters.." So, use locking casters, and you be a'ight. AWESOME project whether stationary or driving it in a parade. I shared with 3 people already.
Not sure about the use as coffee table, but with another of same height and a wood plank it would make an interesting outdoor seating bench.
Sure, but why sit on something so nice?
Can you make a turn table or some kind of moving thing from the gears in the transmission? I love the engine table.
Yeah!! You did it!
awesome
that is so unique!
Thanks
Bro it's sick as, nice
Thanks bro
Great as always, Speedkar! Could you do a breakdown / cut-up of a limited slip differential? I would love to see that video some day. Thanks!
Thanks. Yeah if I can get my hands on a LSD
Sweet!
Your wife old cloths and toothbrush works pretty good. Imagine how her news stuff would work for you.
damn i had that same idea before but ended up installing back to my car lol
Your use is better, but you can keep this idea under your hat for when that engine really is toast. Besides, it would be a lot cooler as furniture with a few conrods that went "plastic"! lol
Depending on the car, it might be worth it to keep it as furniture
Now this is cool
It sure turned out great!
Cool!
3mz-fe. I knew that within the first 10 seconds. Nice! Gives me some ideas what to do with my 1mz someday
wait, 1mz? I never knew the 1mzs ever had that style pensioner...
*tensioner
Okay so the truth is this 1MZ had a vin stamp from an 05 Camry but I took it out of a 99 es300
So yes the tensioner is different because of the side engine mount
speedkar99 so it’s a revised 1mz with vvt, right?
@@brandonosborne6894 yep they had it in 2003.5-06 Camry

Greetings from cina, hope u and ur brother safe and sound from the virus
Yes we are safe thanks
Very nice! maybe it could use a bigger glass?
A bigger glass can fit the top. I figured this size is roughly for a coffee table, but if you had a bigger TV or use as a side table it's possible.
*Cries in 1mz * awesome idea!
Thanks. The rest of the car was neglected, too bad
Awesome
Thanks
Looks great! but I think the double sided tape will ruin it, maybe you can find a glue that dries clear or snot glue dots.
Tbh I've had my TV on my Infiniti engine stand and I don't need any tape, it just sits there.
If your going to use it in a high traffic area then sticking it down is probably the best option.
@@speedkar99 Smear clear silicone on each piston top and cover each with a layer of sandwich bag plastic (polyethylene). Set glass on top to flatten and level silicone and leave it to set. After silicone has set, remove plastic layer (which will peel off easily if fully set) and trim excess silicone from the piston top edges. Replace glass and enjoy non-slip glass top!
I feel sorry for your wife when the time comes to do some dust cleaning in every single nook and cranny 😂
Nah it just needs a quick blow with air and it's good
you are nr 1!
Thanks
1:57 BEAST!
Alloy Block...
Broo that short throw dipstick tho!!
I love the dipstick mod 😉
Hay sir please make a video for the connection of combination switch and also connection of Ecm
Cool project! Very nice ! May I suggest to screw on a new oil filter , for aesthetic?
Nah I like the bare block look
Hey brother how are you? Sorry i haven't been watching or commenting but I'm back. Will watch all your recent videos. This table is awesome i want one too.
Glad you enjoyed it, stay tuned for more
Were those 4 or six bolt mains? I’m always impressed by how stout Toyota motors are. Looks like it’s closed deck as well.
I need you to build me one. Thats cool
Hey Brother did you glue the glass to the pistons or use a dab of silicone? Great work by the way..
cool tables ........ how heavy are they though? hard to move around? up stairs?
Question to speed up the process could I hit it with chemical that is meant for the engine and use a pressure washer
OH YEAH I would fill my house with this cool stuff i would build it my self but do not have the correct tools for the job ,no Wife to pinch tooth brush and old Tee Shirts off of . :-)
Brother: I'm all out of clothes and toothbrushes. You used them all!
speedkar99: Time to move on to my wife's stuff! I just need to avoid the couch
On a more serious note, this looks amazing! I saw the post on facebook and I loved it. Especially since it came out of the same car that I currently own
Thanks I'm glad you enjoyed it
you should figure out a way to embed LED's inside so they shoot colored light out certain areas
hahaha cool idea!!
Thanks
Ok can someone answer me would it be easier to take a pressure washer to the engine to get the carbon and oil out
Can you make a video on how manual transmission works in fwd vehicles.
Yes , I'd love to get my hands on a manual gearbox one day
@@speedkar99 manual gearbox 4 life!
How often should I change my coolant and power steering fluid in my 2011 Civic 1.8?
If you never have, or aren't _certain_ a previous owner did, why not just do it now? Doing it once a decade is certainly not "overmaintenance".
How do you make the glass stable on the engine
sweet
Thanks
heaviest table in the world :D
Sure it's heavy it it's not going anywhere
Nice. How often do you change tooth brushes at home?hahahaha
Not me, my brother's toothbrush
Hi, can you explain to me why 2007 civic steering is smoother and better than 2007 sentra ?
Thanks
It's electric power steering
without those wire brushes i dont think your "brothers toothbrush" would do it xD
Yeah they can't cut it for the job
Forgot a blinker fluid reservoir
Nah that stays with the blinkers on the car.
My wife’s old T shirt, my brother’s old dress shirt “I had to go get another toothbrush my brother’s gonna be really mad today”
Gotta use what I have
@@speedkar99 I'm just messing with you keep making awesome content I love your videos man!
How about an outdoor bed / bedframe using a car body
That would be sweet
You should made a table out of the cruddy LS and left the sludge.
I made a table but that one was alot of cleaning
I would like to see the EPA manager
Why so? I am upcycling here 🤔
@@speedkar99 engine fluids on soil
@@Airman.. EPA = Excuses for Polluters in Amerikkka
that dip stick would work nice if it was a can opener
How heavy is the engine after you removed the guts?
I can't lift the whole thing but it comes apart in 6 pieces that can be easily relocated. I'm bad at estimating weight
a bronze oil filter would have looked nice
Nice, but kind a heavy table!! do something with old shock absorber.
It comes apart in pieces so you build it in spot.
I would have put some thing on the piston head so it doesn't scratch the glass
Double sided tape so it doesn't slide off.
The glass is tempered...the paint would scratch before the glass does.
if you dont mind me asking how much did you sell it for?
I don't remember, probably few hundred
Eye: I understand, hand: WTF
Easy off for cleaning all parts nothing is better 🏁
Hey, I need your bother's and wife's GoFundMe campaign sites so I can donate as I would hate for them to run out of toothbrushes. :p Love the table. I've been wanting to do something like this for years.
Thanks. Yeah I've seen these online but you really gotta make one to get one. I already have an Infiniti G35 engine under my TV
9:24 "and while wearing my wife's slippers......"
And a car seat next to the table
Hmm good idea but car seats are heavy. They might work good as a computer gaming chair or something
Talk about contaminating your yard and driveway. haha
Did it end up smelling like oil?
No it's fine once you let the paint cure outside for a few days
@@speedkar99 you think if I don't paint it, it would smell of oil?
next : How to make coffee table from pratt and Whitney jet engine

😁
Nice work. Try and sell them.
I might get in the business haha... you looking for one?
Some people might think that “this looks like a good idea”, but believe me it is not. I own a vehicle repair shop. We did recycled and repurpose a few things and this is one of it. Repurposing car seats are ok, but engine coffee table is not recommended. We used a V6 engine for it. It looks good, but the problem comes when you want to move it around. It is heavy. My advice, only use a few components. Not use like in this video and exactly how we did it too, use the whole engine block.
This isn't meant to be moved around. It's meant to be assembled in it's place. That's why it comes apart in 6 main pieces easily.
Next time you have some 1MZ just "laying around in the backyard", give it to someone in need😄
But the table itself is badass, here I can't complain. No shiny lights or speakers, real engine internals are installed, and silver/bronze aesthetics is pretty awesome. And of course V-shaped cylinders' look is much cooler than of inline engine block.
This 1mz has been put to better use than it's previous duty being neglected in the ES300.
Glad you enjoyed my build, I need help thinking of color schemes for future builds.
Car seat office chair?
Hmm good idea but heavy!
What would your neighbor thought when he saw you painting your engine pistons and cams
He thought I was rebuilding it. (Used car sales guy 😶)
What was wrong with this motor?
Nothing much. Just came from a crusty ES300
Could you have picked crummier weather?
A heavy table
Gotta take it apart to move it
