  • The thought of paying thousands of dollars to go through years of seminary education is scary, to say the least. So the President of Redemption Seminary, John Schwandt, shares the innovative approach he is taking to help students overcome the biggest challenges to theological education.     You have to learn funerals and marriages, not taught in seminary, I have heard.

      That is true. And it's why I have a number of resources helping pastors with funerals and weddings. Much of the practical aspects of ministry must be learned in the trenches of actually doing ministry.

    I answered the call to ministry at 50 y.o. ,now 64, did not go to seminary for many real reasons. I looked at DL Moody who had no seminary degree; and now modern pastors who didn't take their Theology to heart and have sinned and shamed Jesus. God will supply the ability. Too many worldly professors even in my SBC.

      Seminary is definitely not mandatory for the Lord to work through you. However, for many, I think it is a wonderful blessing to help keep you grounded in sound doctrine. That all comes with the warning that you should absolutely choose a seminary wisely. Many formerly good seminaries have fallen because of faculty with bad theology. Either way, all pastors should be dedicated to lifelong learning and Bible study. Seminary can be a great resource to help with that.
