That "fruity spiciness" you detected is right on. It's from a topping. A very subtle topping to be sure, but a trade-secret additive that gives it that little peppery raisin note, especially noticeable on the retrohale. Cheers.
I am amazed at how cool it smokes. The flavor is mild but good. I had given my mouth a rest for a month and happened to have capstan blue loaded in my pipe when I saw your review. We must be smoking on the same wavelength.
I think this was a very technically accurate review. As are most of your reviews! We are very fortunate to have the prices and availability that we do in the USA.
Really love this stuff. And the tin note to me is a beautiful white grape sort of aroma that just begs to be stuffed into a pipe. Awesome tobacco. Excellent review.
I just found out that this is the kind of tobacco my great-grandfather smoked in his tobacco pipe... i don't know why, but it's make me feel surprisingly thrilled.
As I've said before, this is my go to straight Virginia and you made it sound so good, I had to push pause and fire up a bowl. And if you really want a treat cellar some as you said. It really is a treat. I've got some with some years on it and wow. As always, I really enjoyed the review. Well done Bradley. Have a great weekend.
Thanks for the review. As my smoking preferences mature and refine, I find I'm enjoying things like Peterson's Early Moring and Orlik Golden Sliced the most. I'll have to give this a go.
I just smoked this for the first time last night. I have to say I was very happy with it straight out of the tin. And it got better the more I smoked as well!
Thanks for the review! I'm glad you enjoyed it. This is my go-to, everyday smoke (when I have the time). I think this one hits all the right spots. It's not overly complex or rich, but complex and flavorful enough that there's enough to enjoy and ponder. For a richer full VA, I'd recommend Blackwoods Flake, by McClelland. Perhaps a review in the future? ;) Anyway, thanks again for the review, and God bless!
I hadn't ever tried this. I ordered a tin after seeing this video. I also ordered Newminster No. 400 Superior Navy Flake. I can't stop smelling the Navy Flake long enough to go smoke LOL. It's just one of those tobaccos that smell incredible. I'll start with the Capstan Blue because that was my intention. Thanks for all the reviews you do, Bradley. I really enjoy them. It's tough to find someone with a very similar taste in tobaccos.
Thanks for an interesting review! Been a pipe smoker for 30+ years, almost only smoking yellow or blue Capstan, due to the more pure tobacco taste and satisfaction, from top to bottom, especially when relighting, and without so much casing and artificial flavor. The expensive Capstan tins therefore also last longer than those from less expensive Mac Baren or Orlik.
Henrik Lund you probably haven't tried Mac baren hh pure Virginia.. very minimal casing and unique and just wonderful. the regular Mac baren line is nothing special but, that hh is in a whole other league when it comes to quality
Thanks Chris for your suggestion. I will see if a Mac Baren branded tobacco can finally deliver similar pure tobacco satisfaction, now that they try harder with the 'HH' initials and hopefully don't save on quality. Wonder why Orlik GS is never critized for the obviously much more casing used than eg Capstan. Orlik tobaccos were never typically English but more continental. I do smoke Orlik with pleasure occassionally though, same as I do not eat gourmet food every day :-)
Thanks for the video, nice as always. I used to smoke lots of it back in 80's, actually it was one of first tobaccos I smoked when I started pipesmoking.
Had this this morning in a brand new Irish Briar pipe- and it was WONDERFUL. Started with a weird bitter taste and I was unhappy- but it progressed to wonderful. I reckon I will be stocking up heavily on it.
pretty much everything you enjoy I usually enjoy Bradley, so trust me when I say try Mac baren pure Virginia and I am quite sure you will place it in your top 5 full Virginia blends.. I know a pretty bold assumption but, you may be surprised.
Hey bradley, due to this review i went and bought a tin. It was made in 2013!!!!. Should i let it age more or enjoy it now? I'm tempted to just let it age more and more... maybe in 2023 i will open it and enjoy it. Like you, i enjoy Virginia/ Virginia Perique blends almost exclusively ..... Do you have any lighter english blends that are not a complete latakia bomb that i could enjoy?
Great review as always, Bradley. How would you compare CAPSTAN FLAKE (Blue) to DUNHILL/PETERSON FLAKE and MAC BAREN HH PURE VIRGINIA in terms of their flavour profiles, nicotine content, and overall richness and smoking qualities. Which of the three do you prefer? Anyone in the comment section, please feel free to also comment - any response would be much appreciated. Thanks!
I really like this one. Smoking the Ready Rubbed version this morning with tea. I've kinda rediscovered Virginias lately, especially as a first pipe of the day. My favorite is Best Brown Flake, but that stuff is so hard to find now it might as well not exist. This one reminds me a lot of Best Brown, and it's usually available. Has that nice rich brown bread thing going
Good review; this is the tobacco that made me love Virginias and there was no going back. Only recently available in the US I think, but in Europe it's everywhere. Yummy. Thanks as always, enjoy your videos!
Hey Bradley, I'm going to carefully try pipe smoking again. I have some of this on the way and I wanted to see what you had to say about it. Sounds like a glorious one. The only pure Virginia I've ever had is English summer flake. I can't wait to try the brand Tolkien smoked, even if it's not exactly the same anymore, which I'm sure it isn't.
Long time subscriber/viewer, never commented until now, this is one of my favorites, total figgie fig flavor, good room note, only better room aroma is Summerhill by John Ayelsbury. Good review, thanks for turning others onto this great blend!
STUFFandTHINGS ...and it's finally here! At first I opened (after gazing at the beautiful tin first), looked, smelled and thought "Dunhill Flake". But after puffing it for a while, the roomnote and taste is different, and better. As always, I think your personal impressions are spot on. 👍🏻
Just tried this for the first time and it was a good smoke. It is a good tobacco, very mild and it reminds me of milk and coffee (latté). Smoke is smooth and creamy. Missing a little character. Over all a good tobacco. Quality tobacco.
I just bought Orlik Golden Slice and I was quite impressed with it. I detect a bit of Preque(sp) I had my first smoke last night. I'll be buying more of it.
OGS's Very Nice and fragrant tobacco, one of most popular pipe tobacco In Denmark- introduced to general public back in -57-I keep it always handy, nevertheless I try to not smoke aways this tobacco in order to avoid boring , Love cowboy dudes of America,Have a great weekend and God Bless,Paul
Hi Bradley, Just spot on, you're the best reviewer over the whole UA-cam,you described this baccy just what I remember it been last time i was smoking it,although I prefer the OGS over to Capstan thanks to that little added perique spiciness, nevertheless I'm trying to reserve my OGS tins for spring and summer time, the rotation is perhaps the key that keeps me out of gettin bored.Definitely,I shall have this Capstan Blue new again, despite the fact I wasen't too crazy about Capstan yellow .Personally I see that one should always smoke straight VA once and while cause these tobacco types are so unforgiving if one smokes too fast and doesent pay attention enough, many light VA can result inevitable tongue bite and scortchness -and thereby straight Virginias teach as how to smoke properly.Any new or indermediate pipesmoker ought to watch your videos before buying a unknown tobacco in order to avoid to pouring money down the drain.Thank you again and Have a nice day,Friendly Yours,Paul
This sounds yummy! I plan on grabbing some of this up. Quick question I have though. What makes tobacco "Navy"? Is it just a stronger flavor or the way that it's cut?
Hi Brad, have you tried the ready rub version? Would the ready be different in flavor ? I am seriously considering buying this. Any input will be greatly appreciated. Thanks
nice review. I was always a bit tentative about ordering it for some reason but I might try it. Mac Baren do indeed produce a very good flake, always very uniform and easy to deal with. I quite enjoy their simple "virginia flake" (not the HH version) so this could be a good one.
I'm curious how this compares to dunhill flake? I really want to love the dunhill, but it's not quite sweet enough for me.. would capstan fit the bill?
Another great review, allways wondered about capstan. Thank you for doin what you do...Macbarren seems to bite my dad but doesn't bite me...especially when given time to mellow. Pops won't try it unless
Great review! Been wanting to grab a tin of this. Is there a reason you haven't reviewed any Cornell and Diego blends? I find the typical C&D coarse cut to be very difficult to smoke. Looking forward to more of your reviews!
Never tried this one. Love both FVF and Orlik GS, so I think I'll add it to "The List". Thanks. And yea, A lot of the MacBaren blends bite me with gusto.
As always, great review. I would consider trying this, but I'm in the process of weeding out some of the blends that currently have in the cellar (aka wooden box that my wife lets me use for a hobby she detests) and the Virginia that I have come back to time and time again is Full Virginia Flake. And considering the price when purchased in the 250g box when on sale ($28.99 sometimes on P&C), the value is exceptional. On a separate note, have you ever tried H&H Magnum Opus? I don't like all of Russ' blends at times, but this has turned out to be one of my favorite English/Balkan blends (second only to Ashton Artisan's Blend which is my all-time favorite). Would love to know your thoughts on it. Thanks again for the great reviews.
Great review brother, as always! One off hand question...I notice in your thumbnail pics of some of the recent reviews you have your new Dunhill pipe sitting by the tin.... But in the actual vid your smoking a Sav or Peterson...is some one babying a new favorite?? lol! Either way, awesome vids!
heyy Bradley this is a great review I think I'll try this straight Virginias sounds very gd and I like Virginias so I think I'll like it thanks so much for sharing your thoughts on it Happy smoking my friend☺☺☺💨💨💨💨👍👍👍 best regards Peter
I always enjoy your reviews. But I have a question: you mention FVF being a dark "bready" straight Virginia flake but I always wonder if it is the darkest as Orlik GS is called the brightest? Keep up the great videos man.
Capstan blue Flake is one of my Alldaysmoke's. I would take it on a lonely Island and smoke it the rest of my Life, as well as Hal O' The Wynd from Rattray's. And i will bet that there is Perique in the Capstan blend.
I am smoking this tobacco for a week , the issue is that the nice smell of tobacco just disappear after smoking , i am not sure it is to dry or i am packing my pipe in a wrong way .
I'm a genuine follower of yours and love your stuff, I've bought Dunhill Nightcap and Elizabethan Mixture because of your opinion and I'm still upset that after 2 days you haven't released another Dark Souls video yet (as of 8:45 PM on Oct 15), but you look like a gay russian in that adidas jacket and hat.
AliothSenator Exactamente!
Loved the "looking at you gawith." Great review, I put some in a recent order and looking forward to smoking it. I have indulged in mcclelland deep hollow and Orlik on the virginias and enjoyed both.
Thanks for sharing. Hey, have you entertained the idea of incorporating another level to your site? I'm no expert but I see glimpses of brilliance and a high capacity of creativity in and around your work here. What would that additional level be? I don't know. It may depend on your time, desire, and perceived potential. I believe that if you so desire you have the capacity to share, entertain, and educate hundreds or thousands of UA-cam subscribers world wide. Pardon my stepping maybe too far into your world. Once again thanks for sharing.
This one knocks FVF out of the ballpark in my opinion. Couldn't get any taste out of that tobacco at all and was a the worst behaved tobacco I've tried BY FAR. This on the other hand, I also got the clove like notes through, just delicious. Maybe also because this was the first tobacco that I tried and really enjoyed. Only problem is the damned price! Here in Italy a tin will set you back 25€ for 50g. I'm yet to try Orlik...I'm intrigued to see how it is different...at a more reasonable price point too I heard.
I don't smoke a pipe, I just watch these videos to hear your tin description voice.
Good to have you regardless of the reason!
Nice. I hope you enjoy your pipe smoking experience.
The man is a Shakesperean actor, like Burton, Olivier, Branagh....but better!
That "fruity spiciness" you detected is right on. It's from a topping. A very subtle topping to be sure, but a trade-secret additive that gives it that little peppery raisin note, especially noticeable on the retrohale. Cheers.

Good review Bradley, spot on. Cap Blue is my go-to Virginia. 👍🏻
Can you do a revisit for this tobacco?!
Gods above, it feels good to have your opinion validated
I am amazed at how cool it smokes. The flavor is mild but good.
I had given my mouth a rest for a month and happened to have capstan blue loaded in my pipe when I saw your review. We must be smoking on the same wavelength.

This is a great page. Love the different accents when describing the descriptions of the tobacco. Very entertaining my go to page . peace out
One of my favorites, though I usually but the ready rubbed version since I generally rub the flakes out anyway.

Orlik GS and Capstan Blue flake.... This two tobaccos is pretty much all I need.
Just picked up a tin of this today. Thanks for reviewing!

Love these reviews. Make me want to smoke my pipes again.
Excellent review as always Bradley. Congrats. I liked it so much. Thanks a lot man.

It's certainly a possibility!
thanks for good video
Hi mate, nice review as usual.. How does this compare to Peterson University Flake & Dunhill Flake as I have tried these..
I haven't had University, but I'd say Capstan is a bit milder than Dunhill.
Alright then.. Now I have a picture on where it stands.. Thanks :)
3 new dunhill blends out there…looking forward for your reviews...
Wait, Dunhill just put out some new blends? When did this happen?
Once smokingpipes has them, I'll be able to do a review.

Great review! Been wanting to grab a tin of this. Is there a reason you haven't reviewed any Cornell and Diego blends? I find the typical C&D coarse cut to be very difficult to smoke. Looking forward to more of your reviews!
No reason in particular. I'm sure I'll review some C&D blends in the future.
Never tried this one. Love both FVF and Orlik GS, so I think I'll add it to "The List". Thanks.
And yea, A lot of the MacBaren blends bite me with gusto.
This one was very well behaved for me, so hopefully it will be for you too.
As always, great review. You should! They can be quite tasty.
I always enjoy your reviews. But I have a question: you mention FVF being a dark "bready" straight Virginia flake but I always wonder if it is the darkest as Orlik GS is called the brightest?
Keep up the great videos man.
I wouldn't say that FVF is one of the darker Virginias I've had.
What would you say the "darkest" virginia flake is? Perhaps something for your Sunday Smoke?
Capstan blue Flake is one of my Alldaysmoke's. I would take it on a lonely Island and smoke it the rest of my Life, as well as Hal O' The Wynd from Rattray's. And i will bet that there is Perique in the Capstan blend.
I definitely think it's good enough to be a regular smoke. Thanks for watching!

How would you compare Captstan to Dunhill Flake?
I'd say Dunhill flake is a bit stronger in taste and nicotine. Similar flavor profile though.

I love a lot of Gawith blends but their flakes DO require a little more work! Often well worth it though.
good virginia flake but flavoring is topping
What a bummer that 7 years ago this tin was 12 bucks and now it's 20-30 bucks.

Un excellent virginie naturel!

I find this blend to be quite dull. It needs perique. It's just boring after a few bowls.
Only tried the ready rubbed, crap.
DarkAngelOfHellingly you really should try the flake to me atleast there is a flair difference :)
