Catching up on your vids - you're so right about pipe smoking as a hobby vs just pipe smoking. Just watched Cary Grant's old flick "Mr blandings builds his dream house" and there is so much pipe smoking in it. The difference is, they have those big jars of "pipe tobacco" on their office desks, or coffee tables, and there's scenes where a friend comes over, digs in his pocket, pulls out a pipe (he smokes the same pipe the whole movie so there's also that - not all different carvers, shapes, etc), and just helps himself to the pipe tobacco in the jar and smokes it. I'm like "what kind of baccy is that? What if he doesn't like the type of blend that's in there? So many questions!!!" And Susan is like, "it didn't matter back then what kind of tobacco it was - it was simple back then! My grandfather only smoked one type of tobacco." I'll bet it was a burley type or mild English maybe hehe
I've seen that! Definitely fun to see pipe use portrayed so casually and matter-of fact. Most old-timers did seem to stick to one blend. Most likely a drugstore burley like you said.
Excellent observation. I think you're touching upon an artifact from a time before our hyper self awareness and the multiplication of "options" as a primary cultural marker. A man smoked a pipe "back then" because it was simply what one did and was enjoyable for what it was. Now pipe smoking is a "lifestyle" complete with narcissistic preferences and all manner of pipes and tobaccos that would have boggled the mind of the Cary Grant character. One could, at one time, simply buy a pipe and some tobacco and have a smoke. Enjoy the mild flavor, enjoy the relaxing effect of the nicotine. That's it. Now there are thousands of blends that are overwhelming. How do we find our way in this labyrinth of choices? UA-cam offers channels like this as a chance to find ourselves through technologically facilitated self expression. This is why people take Xanax and Prozac regularly. Our world is a dizzying array of nonsense. Anyway. Check out the book "Mediated" by Thomas de Zengotita for more.
Dry the tobacco out on a baking pan at room temp or set outside. Once dry, crush it down then fill your pipe. This will bring out the flavors and give a longer smoke. Give a few false lights then tamper and relight, sipping as you go. One thing I notice about OTCs is that they require a good pipe cleaning first. I use a plumber's brush to clean the bowl and then wash out the stem. Then run a bristle pipe cleaner through the stem and chamber. Next I'll take a few q-tips and clean out the bottom half of the stem (bent pipes only). Followed by swabbing the inside of the chamber and bowl. The difference is like night and day. The pipe not only smokes cooler but you'll get a first class smoke with blends like Carter Hall. And with Carter Hall I get an apricot, chocolate or mocha type of smoke. The room note is heavenly. You can also set the blend out on a plate and let the leaf wilt. Smoking the wilted version brings out Carter Hall's cherry note. Happy smoking everyone.
I am glad you gave Carter Hall a fair shake . It is a good Tobacco. However at the end of the day it's an OTC . Nothing fancy but it's a Decent Tobacco.. Thanks
Carter Hall, Granger, Sir Walter Raleigh - these OTC blends are great for smoking while puttering around in the yard or working in the garage. And they are best enjoyed in a cob. Absolutely! I smoke Carter Hall when out deer hunting. The ten point buck I shot last year while puffing away in my blind didn't seem to mind it either.
I love your honestly, and the ability to teach, as well entertain!!! I myself, waited to hear what your input was on C.H. I've smoked it many years ago, and found it mellow and not overbearing. To the point of continuing on the pipe smoking hobby. Thank the smoking God's...that I moved up the chain, looking for true TOBBACO flavor! I tried C.H. last week... knowing that you would do a review. My response was a big negative!!!! There was a very big difference in then and now, a the chemical interference was more prevalent then those years. Anyways, thanks for going the extra mile....just to see! John
Time for a new series - OTC Fury. It would be fascinating to get a codger tier list from a connoisseur such as yourself, Bradley. Thanks for the wonderful content!
If I'm being honest, I love complex and flavorful blends, but Burley forward blends are what I'm into at the moment. I was in an English/Balkan phase the last few years, but have found myself smoking a lot more HBS, OJK, HH Burley Flake these last few months. And I think I can safely say I'm a born again Burleyphile. WTS, I have come to appreciate these OTC blends a lot more. My favorite being SWR and Prince Albert right now. H&H is also a good smoke. I actually enjoy CH, but not as much as the others. LLRR is also a solid OTC as well.
I don't think this tobacco is for people who consider pipe smoking a hobby. I smoke mutiple bowls a day and need a tobacco that tastes good and burns cool and CH fits the bill. Its perfect for smoking in my truck on my way to and from work.I save my "fancy" tobacco for the evenings when I can sit down and relax. Good review
Sampling this for the first time while watching this. I got a 14 ounce tub. Middle of the road blend, simple and old school. I usually like Macberen Virginia 1 with a mix of Latakia. This blend while simple is spot on with your description. I'd say between Prince Albert and Carter Hall. I like PA bettet.
Good info for a beginner.. I think we all started with drugstore blends. I was a Captain Black smoker, and occasionally Borkum Riff and Super Value, until I threw them away and graduated to bulk bin blends at a proper tobacco store. Then, I threw those away and graduated to proper tinned blends, especially the classics that have been around 50-100 years or more. Videos like this will certainly help people with sophisticated tastes seek their level.
On you tube I've seen many pipes, like Peterson, Comoy, etc smoking Carter Hall. I like Dunhill,Mac Baren, C&D etc blends, but ever so often I'll pick up a package of Carter Hall for the golf course, as it's very simple and one dimensional to smoke, and easy to keep lit. Does not require a lot of thinking. Really like your reviews.
One not in my arsenal, one to never be in my arsenal- BUT..... I appreciate you taking one for the team on this one and letting us know how it WOULD be were we to actually get it.
Colin Kelly -- I think any tobacco is worth a try. For the price of a 2oz. bulk bag from 4noggins.com, you have very little to lose. I typically smoke "premium" blends but there is something about Carter Hall's simplicity and easy-smoking nature that secures a permanent spot in a jar on my shelf.
Me too. Personally I don't get it. It starts out chemical-y, then tastes okay, but the development falls flat. Anywhere south of mid-bowl is just hot air to me.
Smoked some OTCs recently for fun. CH was decent as cheap, emergency smoke goes. Velvet and Half&Half both taste like nail polish remover. I couldn't finish a bowl of either. Those two blends and Crooner are the only three times I've wasted tobacco.
These OTC tobaccos are really ok.......I, like many pipe smokers, cut our teeth on these. They were readily available and started us off until we founds tins or whatever! I have good memories of these tobaccos!
Well, I guess it's the way most of us start the hobby. An honest, straightforward review. And all these flavours as you described..., it didn't made me want to smoke this, but it sure gave me a midnight craving for candies.
Carter Hall for me is a great change of pace blend. When I get sensory overload from my regular blends (Dunhill Flake, Capstan, Elisabethan, Std Mixture, and 965), I'll switch up for a while to the mildness of Carter Hall, and when I return to my regulars, they taste even better than before. I don't get the chemically alcohol thing you got (maybe because I jar it for a while). Cigar recommendation: if you get a chance try Oliva Serie G in Robusto or La Aroma de Cuba in Robusto. --Bill
I appreciate your review and, enjoyed hearing you give an evaluation of Carter Hall because, my mixing of different tobacco blends has made me tired that, just considering finding a blend mixed and, ready to smoke is likely my choice may be Carter Hall.
Thanks for the review! I will say I was just the opposite concerning Carter Hall and Captian Black--Carter Hall almost put me out of pipe smoking forever. But that's why there's a huge variety of tobacco blends! Thanks again!
Hello my good friend Bradley, thank you for providing reviews of these classic blends. I enjoy these blends in my older knock about pipes and while I smoke them I like to let my mind wander to the people and places where these would have been enjoyed. It's part of the experience and is very relaxing for me.
I absolutely love premium tobaccos but if I could only smoke one for the rest of my life, you bet it would be carter hall. My first bowl ever was carter hall and everytime I light it up, I get nostalgia.
Good vid. I enjoy many otc brands on a regular basis as my daily go-to blends. I also enjoy some more expensive blends on occasion. These great otc's provide great day to day enjoyment while leaving room for the occasional treat.
Splendid review...as always, I was enjoying a cup of Cafe' Bustelo and having a bowl of Amphora full aroma during my work break...Thank you Bradley for this insightful impression review. 😎☕🍺🎮
I haven't tried Carter Hall yet, but I'm absolutely loving the Prince Albert. I'm fortunate enough to have most OTC blends available at my local smoke shop.
My good friend Bradley. I'm a relatively new pipe smoker who started off smoking blends like Frog Mortons, Dunhill, Orlik, etc...and just out of curiosity I bought a pouch of CH to try, and after just one bowl, I stuffed the pouch back in it's box and pitched it in a drawer. I thought it was bland, flavorless and just...bleh. I've also tried Velvet, which I thought was marginally better but not by much. I've since grown tired of it as well. I don't plan on trashing either of the OTC blends I have...but I have no real desire to smoke them again any time soon. Maybe they'll age well; one can hope. Thanks for the review buddy.
I absolutely agree about that early alcohol bite from this tobacco. while my pouch only had a slight artificial sweetness to it I prefer it over prince Albert which gurgles quite a bit by the end of the smoke.
Bradley, I "represent" your comment, re: "non-offensive OTC that wouldn't turn off a new pipe smoker." Had it not been for CH, I may not be smoking a pipe b/c MANY of the other OTC's available where I am are/were terrible. CH got me back into pipe smoking, and moving forward w/the hobby, and discovering the more "premium" tobaccos that I smoke (alongside CH). CH really benefits from a caked/well-broken in pipe, too.
You had the same reaction to Carter Hall that I did. On one website I visited, everyone talked about it like it was the holy grail of tobaccos. It wasn't really unpleasant, but it certainly pales in comparison to so many other tasty blends.
I appreciate your reviews. I understand that just like connectors that there are tobacco aficionados. What about those people who drink boxed wine, bud light and basic cigarettes. There has to be a way to help them enjoy the relaxation of smoking a pipe. What do you ssuggest?
I'm gonna take this in a different direction. I really like this tobacco. It's light and it smokes very well in all of my pipes. I've been smoking C.L. Pease, Petersen, Davidoff, Seven Seas, etc. etc,. They are nice but to me sometimes seem to strong, too wet, and too thick. I like the aroma of carter hall out of the tub, It has the perfect level of moisture, packs nicely and doesn't smoke too hot. I usually smoke CH now, and will try other blends just to experiment. It has become my go to tobacco. Maybe I'm just unsophisticated. But I like what I like.
There is so much disinformation going around casing-favoring and many smokers remained convinced that Carter Hall is a “pure” tobacco blend. You will also hear many pipers boast about never smoking an aromatic or flavored blend. Truth is, raw tobaccos are very harsh on their own and almost all commercial blends, including English and Balkans DO include some kind of casing as Burleys and Virginias are systematically sprayed or soaked with some kind of casing. To me, the difference between an aromatic and non-aromatic is the type and quantity of casing used and the top flavoring, an extra layer of casing added at the later stage of blending. Ultimately, what matters the most is using (sparingly) a natural casing (rather than an artificial flavor) and high quality tobacco to start with.
I've tried Carter Hall and Half & Half and they made me realize why most people use them to cut other blends. Both were kinda bland and boring to me on their own. I could see someone using it to tame down a Lat bomb or something though.
Good Honest Review..CH is a Mild Plain Smoke No Frills, and sometimes it is ok just to go for Plain and Simple..Enjoy this sometimes When I don"t want to Think to Hard LOL!!
heyyy Bradley this was a nice review ive never tried Carter Hall with that Chemical taste but I'd try it just to see if I like it the only OTC blend I've tried is Captain Black I've seen other like smoker's Pride but I never tried it thanks for the review Bradley it was great I'm glad the way you did the review like all the others awesome ☺☺☺☺☺💨💨💨💨👍👍👍👍 best regards Peter
Excellent review as always, I agree that the initial harshness present during the first 1/3 or so of the bowl does dissipate if you soldier onward. For me though, the moisture content was a little wetter than I cared for and most annoyingly no amount of drying would influence it. I never once had trouble with it burning though, it was a 1-light-wonder. I am assuming this is due to the high burley content and/or the same type of combustion promoting additives that cigarettes have. I did notice that if you treat it like a Samuel Gawith flake and let it set out to dry for a long while, it does loose a lot of that initial harshness, despite the moisture level in the hands not moving in any appreciable level. The best smoke I had with this blend occurred when I laid some out to dry one evening, became involved with other activities and didn't get around to it until the same time the following evening. As far as OTCs go though, if a gun was against one's head, this would be the one to choose. I don't know if you have any plans to review additional OTCs (would be cool to see you at least hit the other major two at some point; Captain Black and Prince Albert) but if you do, I think you will agree Carter Hall is probably the most tolerable of the three. Lastly, if the thought of smoking more blends like this through a cob fatigues you, perhaps grab a Dr. Grabow? They have mercifully small-sized chambers...
Great review! I have not tried Carter Hall yet, but I have smoked a number of bowls of Prince Albert and it's the only blend out of the ~30 I've tried that does not give me tongue bite. I will definitely try out Carter Hall at some point. The thing you said about new pipe smokers is very true, I think a lot of people are turned off by their first experience because they get some cheap aromatic that burns a hole in their tongue, instead of some mellow burley-based blend like PA or CH. Do you have plans for a Prince Albert review? Would be fun to have a comparison between the two as some who has only smoked Prince Albert.
Bradley, it is funny you should say that. I introduced my BIL to pipe smoking about 6 months ago by sending him a care package with all the usual suspects; Nightcap, Liz's Mixture, Orlik GS, Gawith Chocolate Flake, Mac Baren Golden Extra, Escudo, etc. He tried each one over many subsequent weekends and when I called to get his impressions... his pick was Carter Hall. I was surprised, but not because Carter Hall is a "bad" tobacco. Just because I had sent so many that were better (IMO).
When I started pipe smoking, I got a ton of samples to try from some friendly people on a pipe forum. Things like Orlik Golden Sliced, Capstan, Old Gowrie, Hal O' the Wynd, Autumn Evening, Mac Baren Pure Virginia etc. I tried everything and got massive tongue bite from all of it. I was pretty much ready to give up pipe smoking because I thought that everything was gonna be like that and that it was just part of smoking a pipe to have your mouth hurt for half a day afterwards. Then I tried Prince Albert and it is the first and so far only tobacco that has not given me tongue bite and is actually pleasant and enjoyable to smoke. That's why I think that Prince Albert (and maybe Carter Hall) might be a good starter tobacco.
As far as OTC tobacco goes, I much prefer Prince Albert. It also has a strong cocoa aroma in the pouch, but more tobacco flavor in the smoking. SWR, Carter Hall... These two are far to mild for me. While on the OTC theme, I'll say it's too bad Kentucky Club Mixture was discontinued. That OTC is in my top 5. I can only guess, but it seems to have a lot more VA, and the turkish/perique takes it up another notch further. I have 2 tubs to get me through the zombie apocalypse! Enjoy your reviews.
Very good review. I've not had Carter Hall, but thinking about buying a pouch. I started off with Captain Black. I've been smoking Sir Walter and its not bad.
I think Carter Hall is okay. I smoked it yesterday in a cob on a boat..fitting! I do know what he means about the first taste; it's wise to do a good char light. That said, it's no GLP, C&D, or McClelland.
I imagine this will bring lots of new pipe smokers to your channel due to people trying otc as there first smoke. Maybe they will then try others instead of just putting the pipe down. Good work.
Hey man I have really enjoyed watching your videos and as a very new pipe smoker find your reviews really helpful so thank you. Can I ask tho, why do I sometimes get a really ashy burnt smoke which puts me off it.? Thank you.
A very interesting review! I somehow skipped over the drugstore blends along the way. I hear Condor is supposed to be a winner though - if you can manage to get your hands on it. There are some new Dunhill blends coming out, Ye Olde Sign, Baker Street (A My Mixture variant I believe) and Dark Flake. The latter of which I am really hoping to get my hands on! Hopefully you will be able to as well so that you can add to your thorough catalog of Dunhill reviews!
hey i know you don't typically like aromatics but I think you should give tsuge first days of spring a try it smell like an aromatic but smokes like a non-aromatic. and it is a vaper which I know you like.
I’m that guy that just slams some automatics in a pipe all Willy nilly, throw a match to it and hope it burns even and what Iv found out is as long as I keep it cool and don’t pack it to tight it burns just fine. I appreciate the art that most people have with they’re techniques but that’s not me lol
Hey Bradley. Always enjoy your reviews. Thanks for doing them. Recently I've been enjoying McClelland Cyprian Mixture. Have you tried or reviewed that one before? Would love to hear your thoughts on it, if you're still taking requests. Take care.
Enjoyed your review as always. I personally compared this review to your other reviews and felt it to be heartfelt and honest. I am not sure what I expected other than an honest opinion, and that I did receive. Would I try it? Probably, will I try it more than once? Based on your review probably not. I would like to mention, blue screen is getting close. Take care Bradley, Andrew
Hey Bradley! just got my first tin of Elizabethton mixture and..... I couldn't handle it :(. I think if I smoke some more carter hall and Prince Albert I'll be able to maybe not vomit after my next bowl.
Cool review. I feel like the "chemically" part of your review puts my off from even trying it. However, if I'm sitting around with someone smoking it and they offer, I wouldn't refuse to give it a go.
Do yourself a favor and get a tub of it. Just don't go in to the experience expecting bells and whistles. I think of carter hall like a morning oatmeal if that makes sense.
hmmm, I've always been curious about Carter Hall but never had it. I didn't know it was a burley blend, I'm very picky on burley blends. might be worth the few dollars to try it anyways...
Come on, he's not going to smoke OTC blends in a briar... ;-) Of course I'm kidding, I love smoking OTC blends. I was just introduced to them two weeks ago and have been smoking them in cobs and briars alike. I really like burley in general. Plus how much more American does it get than smoking CH in a cob?
Someone on the pipetobacco subreddit (the subreddit really loves this channel BTW) said you can buy a cob in walgreens, dunno for sure, as I've never seen one myself, but he said he called his local walgreens and asked, and they had it, just below the counter in a place that was hard to see. (there should be a line break here) I've never actually had carter hall or captain black because I've almost always seen them referred to as a "beginners" tobacco, or something that you smoke for your first time when you're drunk, or your friends dare you to, and just drift away from it, and never come back, so I've never actually tried it, despite its availability and price. I'm tempted to buy a pouch of either that or captain black (or just something I can find in a gas station) so I can have a "driving" or "on the go" tobacco.
The place I went to didn't have carter hall, but it did have some other (as you put it) OTC blends, I picked up a few, and was genuinely impressed with captain black gold. (There should be a line break here) Anyways, thanks for taking time out of your day to make videos and reply.
yeah, nice vid!at one time this stuff and other otc blends were all people could afford or what was available!you have smoked the best tobaccos in the world, its hard to smoke cheap stuff!pipe tobacco levels and choices have ever been better then now, pass the tin mate
My tin note actually reminded me of redman or Levi Garrett chewing tobacco, sweet raisin. I haven’t smoked it yet, bought it cause it was what my wife’s grandpa use to smoke
I started smoking Carter Hall after deciding to find a mild flavored to tobacco so I would quit offending the lady I work with. I tried several and found this one to be decent. After about 1/2 a bowl you really do start to taste a nice natural tobacco flavor. The only reason I smoke pipe is for the nicotine fix though.
Hi Bradley, another great review, like if I was doing this, yes all you said is pretty much what I had experienced over the past few weeks with this basic American blend.Sure there is that bourbon and something artificial flavor in this,I'd assume some similarities we might also find in Borkum Riff bourbon pipe tobacco,.Nevertheless, even If I do find this a bit boring blend, I can't stop reaching to it, especially by mornings or evenings just before bed time, thanks to it being harmless'tobacco, with a mild/ med nicotine content ,moreover, I'd say this is good tobacco when one is working, driving a car or when doing other activities, yet when breaking in a brand new pipe, since this really is a pretty easy bled wich need not too much attention.Definitely one of thoses tobaccos which I would recommed to any person who is takin up pipe smoking ,due to the fact this being not too aromatc, nor heavy taste-wise with moderate nicotine,Thank You for Your honest review,Keep up the Good work, Paul
Pablo The Scandinavian -- I agree 100%. Carter Hall is a tobacco that you "just smoke" while doing other things. The less you think about it, the more enjoyable it is. Bradley, I recommend giving it some time in a jar with ample head space and come back to it in a couple of months. Not my favourite blend by any stretch of the imagination, but by far the best OTC I have tried. All the rest are solidly offensive.
Spot on! What You have said- this Is what I have experimented too, the moisture is crucial with CH, My only easy semi-aro which I'm very likely to keep handy just in case, somehow I'm coming to love this all American standard- PA is another one-the rest American OTC taste too weird to my liking,Keep on puffing and God Bless, Paul
Spot on! , This was just what I had experienced ,the moisture is crucial with this tobacco,I'm coming to addicted to CH,another all time American stable which I favor is PA,the rest of OTC I do find too weird to my likings, Have a great upcoming weekend and Be Well, Paul
C&D Pegasus is like CH on steroids, although I think Briar Fox is closest in its components - and is also an amazing blend. I smoked a bit of this stuff before I discovered 'real' pipe tobacco.
I havent ever tried Carter Hall yet but look forward to it. Why Captain Black gets a bum rap , I dont get it. Its a great blend and flavor , if you try top of the line I still keep Captain Black handy. Still a couple more codgers I havent gotten to besides this one , but the good Captain , Velvet , Half n Half , Sir Walter I visit often. Everyone has different tastes , so I love reviews , but never let them give me a pre conceived expectation. I just dive in open minded.
Did you notice any tongue bite? I got a lot of tongue bite when I've tried to smoke some local OTC in Brazil, some aromatics. But i got hard tongue bite with macbaren too. Could be the aromatic tobacco? Thanks!
Douglas Machado Aromatics have a reputation for tongue bite. It's possible that other factors might be responsible for your tongue bite experience (dry tobacco and puffing intensity are usually the main causes), but try a good burley-based blend and see if there's any bite.
Thanks! I'm smoking the Macbaren Mixture Scottish. It's very pleasant, but i got that (now) medium tongue bite. I still have a half jar. Thanks Brad I gonna try a tin of Orlik Golden Sliced. Where you from?

Excellent. Carter Hall is my absolute favorite OTC tobacco. Could smoke it all day everyday.
Me too
Its not an epic tobacco, but its simple and I love it.
Thanks
This is just the type of review I was about to ask about. I'd love to see more OTC reviews; Half and Half, Prince Albert, Virginia Gold, &c.
Excellent review my friend. Your take, towards the end of the video, on the occasional "snobbishness" of the puritans is spot on.
I have a friend and he's 85 he smokes Carter hall and what you were saying about older pipe smokers you are right
oddly enough, I had just bought a pouch; walked in and turned on this review
Now we shall see when I get a chance to try it
Thanks much!
My pleasure!
Really nice comprehensive review. Well done.
Carter Hall, Granger, Sir Walter Raleigh - these OTC blends are great for smoking while puttering around in the yard or working in the garage. And they are best enjoyed in a cob. Absolutely! Thanks for watching! Like you said, not bad for a first tobacco, but there are many things that are in my opinion much better.
Time for a new series - OTC Fury. It would be fascinating to get a codger tier list from a connoisseur such as yourself, Bradley. Thanks for the wonderful content!
Noted!

Got a pouch at piggly wiggly grocery store earlier today for $3.35 decent smoke if im low on my mains id definetly purchase more

RED,
I ADD TO YOUR POST A HEARTY "AAAAAAAAAAAMEN!".

One not in my arsenal, one to never be in my arsenal- BUT..... I appreciate you taking one for the team on this one and letting us know how it WOULD be were we to actually get it.
Yeah, no need to seek this out. It's not horrible, but you're not missing anything if you never smoke it.
I know a lot of folks who speak well of Carter Hall and otherwise smoke the premium tobaccos.
Thanks for the "down to earth" review
Excellent review, as always, Bradley. Congrats. I liked it a lot. Thanks.
Great review as always, very fair. It would be interesting to see other OTC tobacco reviews
I love Cater Hall! Perfect for working your way out of Captain Black out Aromatics in general. I’ll always keep a tub of Carter Hall around.🍻
--Bill
I've had the Series G in Robusto. Quite tasty!
Chemical note isn't that bad on this but Prince Albert I gotta really sip or it tastes blah. Thx for review one of my favorites
I appreciate your review and, enjoyed hearing you give an evaluation of Carter Hall because, my mixing of different tobacco blends has made me tired that, just considering finding a blend mixed and, ready to smoke is likely my choice may be Carter Hall.
Thanks for watching!
Sounds like something I would probably enjoy.
Thanks for the review! I will say I was just the opposite concerning Carter Hall and Captian Black--Carter Hall almost put me out of pipe smoking forever. But that's why there's a huge variety of tobacco blends! Thanks again!
Yes indeed. Something for every taste.
Great review for Carter Hall over the counter brands... Once again you have a great review...
Splendid review...as always, I was enjoying a cup of Cafe' Bustelo and having a bowl of Amphora full aroma during my work break...Thank you Bradley for this insightful impression review. 😎☕🍺🎮
Thanks for watching!
i agree with you man. half n half is dirt cheap and deeeeelicous.
I really like carter hall but half & half has always been like smoking cigarettes for me.
I really like your reviews and appreciate this one. Carter Hall is my go to when I just want a no brainer smoke. Great for breaking in a new pipe.
I haven't tried Carter Hall yet, but I'm absolutely loving the Prince Albert. I'm fortunate enough to have most OTC blends available at my local smoke shop.
You should do a whole series of OTC reviews. Mixture 79, Prince Albert, Captain Black, and etc. Nice review.
We shall see!
Stay At Home Piper from what I've heard mixture 79 tastes like soap
don't forget Sir Warlter Raleigh, half & half, velvet, and Granger.
Looks like he took your advice; at least he did Captain Black. Some of these old "drugstore" blends are pretty good.
Stay At Home Piper I have never heard of mixture 69
Sounds like you've a;ready been smoking some pretty tasty blends.
I have...and several were from after watching your reviews. Keep up the good work!!
I absolutely agree about that early alcohol bite from this tobacco. while my pouch only had a slight artificial sweetness to it I prefer it over prince Albert which gurgles quite a bit by the end of the smoke.
Won’t say anything about this.. cause you said it all . Enjoyed
Thanks for sharing your experience!
Yep. Pretty much everything is cased at least a little. It's whether it TASTES natural or not that is the deciding factor for me.
Thanks, Peter.
When You Got time wouldn't you give a review for basic MC Barens(Mc Bite Blends)Such as Symphony and Golden Extra
I may review other OTC blends, but I already know I dislike Captain Black. We'll see. Thanks for watching!
For some odd reason, you remind me of Jim Varney.. I'm not sure why, but, anyways.
Happy piping!
Joshua Leboeuf he reminds me of Ben Bailey the host of Cash Cab
I would recommend MANY other tobaccos over Carter Hall to a new pipe smoker, but it isn't bad for what it is.
Could you review Velvet?
Very good review. I've not had Carter Hall, but thinking about buying a pouch. I started off with Captain Black. I've been smoking Sir Walter and its not bad.
Honestly I would go for it. For $3.50 it's absolutely worth picking up a pouch for the occasional smoke
Great review Bradley. I'm on the same page with you on this one.
I think Carter Hall is okay. I smoked it yesterday in a cob on a boat..fitting! I do know what he means about the first taste; it's wise to do a good char light. That said, it's no GLP, C&D, or McClelland.
Thank you Brad great review .
Please do a review on captain black range .
Good review. We agree on this. Review, I don't love it but I don't hate it either. Would do in a pinch. Thank you sir
I imagine this will bring lots of new pipe smokers to your channel due to people trying otc as there first smoke. Maybe they will then try others instead of just putting the pipe down. Good work.
I hope so!
pipesandcigars has their version of Carter Hall called Chatham Manor. much much better and cheaper.
Gonna try it man, thanks a lot!!
I smoke it as a 50/50 with presbyterian mixture. To me, it's the perfect "all day blend." Presbyterian Hall!
Hey man I have really enjoyed watching your videos and as a very new pipe smoker find your reviews really helpful so thank you. Can I ask tho, why do I sometimes get a really ashy burnt smoke which puts me off it.? Thank you.
Hard to say without knowing exactly what your experiencing. Thanks for watching!
would you ever consider a review of Sir Walter Raleigh?
A very interesting review! I somehow skipped over the drugstore blends along the way. I hear Condor is supposed to be a winner though - if you can manage to get your hands on it.
There are some new Dunhill blends coming out, Ye Olde Sign, Baker Street (A My Mixture variant I believe) and Dark Flake. The latter of which I am really hoping to get my hands on! Hopefully you will be able to as well so that you can add to your thorough catalog of Dunhill reviews!
Someday! They are exclusive to P&C at the moment in the US.
The blend looks to be comprised of recon tobacco. Please correct me if I’m wrong.
Morning Bradley, I was curious if the pouch was sealed in the box or just folded over? Great videos I enjoy watching and learning from them. Take care
Pretty sure it was sealed.
They are fun, Rum and Maple, was my favorite, grits and caviar, the way to be, be it is.
Where is that metal and wood tray from? I see multiple YTPC members using it but I’ve never been able to find one online for purchase.
I found mine in an antique shop.
@@stuffandthingsyoutube thanks for letting me know! It’s a great piece! Thanks for the videos!
hey i know you don't typically like aromatics but I think you should give tsuge first days of spring a try it smell like an aromatic but smokes like a non-aromatic. and it is a vaper which I know you like.
+lsugamer13 - I'll definitely keep it in mind.
I’m that guy that just slams some automatics in a pipe all Willy nilly, throw a match to it and hope it burns even and what Iv found out is as long as I keep it cool and don’t pack it to tight it burns just fine. I appreciate the art that most people have with they’re techniques but that’s not me lol
great review like usual... have you thought of st. Bruno tobacco ?
It's on my list!
Minutiae can ruin any otherwise enjoyable pursuit. But it's certainly where I find most of my enjoyment (pipes, whisky, etc), yay minutiae
Hey Bradley. Always enjoy your reviews. Thanks for doing them. Recently I've been enjoying McClelland Cyprian Mixture. Have you tried or reviewed that one before? Would love to hear your thoughts on it, if you're still taking requests. Take care.
Not yet, but I'll keep it in mind!
Hey, do you plan to do more otc blends? Like Captain Black or Prince Albert?
That's definitely a possibility.
Thanks, Andrew!
Hey Bradley! just got my first tin of Elizabethton mixture and..... I couldn't handle it :(. I think if I smoke some more carter hall and Prince Albert I'll be able to maybe not vomit after my next bowl.
It does have a bit of a kick!
Cool review. I feel like the "chemically" part of your review puts my off from even trying it. However, if I'm sitting around with someone smoking it and they offer, I wouldn't refuse to give it a go.
I agree.
when CH is to kept Jarred for some time this chemicality will vanish away and it will improve in quality- Best OTC the another one is Prince Albert
+DethwishPlays... - It IS cheap, so you don't have too much to lose!
Overjoyed to see you smoke a Corn Cob, even with OTC
Corn cob nation!!!
Come on, he's not going to smoke OTC blends in a briar... ;-)
Of course I'm kidding, I love smoking OTC blends. I was just introduced to them two weeks ago and have been smoking them in cobs and briars alike. I really like burley in general. Plus how much more American does it get than smoking CH in a cob?
T Lee - very true. You can't beat the taste of a new corn cob and some fresh Burley
I wanna see your take on the really popular stuff (OTC) simply because I've never smoked 'em.
Stay tuned!
I've seen them in drugstores like Walgreen before, but not lately. No harm in giving CH a try. If you don't like it, you won't be out too much money.
The place I went to didn't have carter hall, but it did have some other (as you put it) OTC blends, I picked up a few, and was genuinely impressed with captain black gold.
(There should be a line break here)
Anyways, thanks for taking time out of your day to make videos and reply.
Actually I do quite like Sir Walter Raleigh 50/50 with Crooner. One of the few home blends I do
Pls do a review on captain black tobacco, it's the only one I can get.
Hey Brad ! a question .. have you ever tried to smoke a Meerschaum pipe ? id you did .. was enjoyble ? cheers.
I have. It smoked just fine in my opinion. Nothing terribly exciting to report though. Thanks for watching!
yeah, nice vid!at one time this stuff and other otc blends were all people could afford or what was available!you have smoked the best tobaccos in the world, its hard to smoke cheap stuff!pipe tobacco levels and choices have ever been better then now, pass the tin mate
I like carter hall and captain black. Both classics in my book
carter hall is going away, middelton is not going to produce it anymore. i really miss it.
Just for laughs could you do back woods cigars? Very OTC, seen but never smoked, lots of mixed reviews
Perhaps someday!
Man you are a class act :)
Hi Bradley, another great review, like if I was doing this, yes all you said is pretty much what I had experienced over the past few weeks with this basic American blend.Sure there is that bourbon and something artificial flavor in this,I'd assume some similarities we might also find in Borkum Riff bourbon pipe tobacco,.Nevertheless, even If I do find this a bit boring blend, I can't stop reaching to it, especially by mornings or evenings just before bed time, thanks to it being harmless'tobacco, with a mild/ med nicotine content ,moreover, I'd say this is good tobacco when one is working, driving a car
or when doing other activities, yet when breaking in a brand new pipe, since this really is a pretty easy bled wich need not too much attention.Definitely one of thoses tobaccos which I would recommed to any person who is takin up pipe smoking ,due to the fact this being not too aromatc, nor heavy taste-wise with moderate nicotine,Thank You for Your honest review,Keep up the Good work, Paul
Thanks for sharing your take on the blend!
Thanks! I have not yet tried PA, but I will now. Have a nice weekend! --Paul from Canada
I just dive in open minded.
is it like smoking a cigarette kind of tobacco? I hate the smell and taste of cigarettes.
Things like this and Prince Albert are great throw and go tobaccos for all day mindless smoking.
Mac Baren blends sometimes do have a tendency to bit some people. I live in Western Washington state. Thanks for watching!
Tongue bite with Carter Hall is a non-issue. Very mild stuff. Nice choice with the OGS. Very nice stuff, especially for the price.
