There are many distortion pedals on the market... but this one is special.
The Lichtlaerm Audio Gehenna is evil.

So I guess I never really thought much about plugging a stompbox directly into my interface, I presume that the same effect could be achieved with any distortion pedal and if it doesn't have the "preamp" knobs, then if you have a preamp vst, you could drop that in as the 1st plugin in your chain to effectively EQ and tame it a bit, before adding an actual amp head and IR right?

Not surprised that pedal directly to IR works. Surprised that you did not mention anything about "re-pedalling" a track (as in, reamping).
Amateur-tip: Record the distortion pedal directly for that sweet sweet shitty album intro, before the actual song comes in blasting.
