    I can't believe that they are seriously labelling this as a "unknown" problem. It's obvious that these poor men are strugging with severe depression in a society that doesn't take mental health seriously 💔💔

      Definitely depression but a more unique cause. I've heard japan has huge expectations for men. Japan also has a major suicide problem. My only guess is that the societal standards are so high that it causes a lot of stress to keep up and a lot of shame if you feel you arent doing well enough

      Asian countries never had a welfare system like lots of european countries. Japan wasn't that extreme before the 90s when the economy got down the first time really bad and people had to worry for their existence and competition increased. The west had this experience fully later 2007/8. Since then it is getting worse as well especially in middle-northern europe. Anonymisation, different workplaces, different people all the time, the difficulty to maintain social circles because of modern mobility and flexibility, sitting in rooms most of the time instead of being outside and more points is simply unhealthy.

    That stuff also happens in europe. After my brother failed his university, he just stayed at parentshome and played videogames all day. Barley saw his few friends or left the house, had no job and no education. He now is in his mid 20s...I reached out to him, got him a small job and now a few months later he moves with me in my apartment. He even started doing sport :) still a long way but those people just need a reaching hand.

      Now I try to apply for community college of 2 year hopefully more stress-manageable. And yet honestly, I try not to think about future cause I just don't see myself able to have one. Please stay there and be patient, that MEANS THE WOULD to us.

    I'm an American hikikomori for about 10 years. It starts, probably with an inclination towards depression, but ultimately with a failure you can't let go of. Anytime you head back out in the world, all you can think is everyone knows your failure. It makes it easy to repeat that failure, and tell yourself no matter what it will always end in failure. It closes you off, and if you don't immediately spring back, it's so easy to fall in deeper than you imagined it could go. I can't even communicate with people directly over text anymore. Some people in the world want things this way. Unfortunately, i don't imagine my story is going to end as happily as some of these comments, but it does provide some comfort knowing people can get out of it. I don't want to die, but living is just way too much work.

      Your words on failure ring true. I think people, particularly proud people (and men) tend to over-emphasize their failures in their own minds. There are legitimately terrible failures: having a loved one die (fiance, family, friend), dropping out of university, things of that nature. The trick for failures is to take them as learning experiences, I reckon. That's not to say one won't fall into a slump after experiencing such a thing, but one needs to bounce back.

      @Lucy Towey That is how patriarchal societies weed out the week and allow the strong to prosper. It's worked pretty well, considering how successful patriarchal societies have been. The real problem is not patriarchy, but the softening of our people. Liberal parenting and the increasing addiction to computers are the main culprits.

    • @credfire8660
      @credfire8660 6 років тому +257

      @@comicsans1689 I'm gonna stop you right there, patriarchal (and matriarchal) societies have caused true gender issues by enforcing gender norms (e.g. Men shouldn't cry and Women are weak), transgenderism wouldn't exist (at the scale it does) if we didn't enforce gender norms.

    • @comicsans1689
      @comicsans1689 6 років тому +75

      @Random Headphone Reviews Gender norms gave order to society, and maximized the strengths of the sexes and to mitigate their weaknesses. To ignore this crucial pillar to the success of our society is ignorant. Transgenderism was not a major issue until the degenerate sexual liberation movement started causing a ruckus. To ignore gender roles is to ignore biology, and will surely lead to our demise.
      Name a successful society that did not enforce gender norms.

    • @credfire8660
      @credfire8660 6 років тому +158

      @@comicsans1689 That's not what I meant, gender norms *did* start out because of how Males are different from Females. However somewhere along the way they ended up being oppresive, and things have significantly improved since the peak of legitimate widespread toxic masculinity/femininity. Gender norms can be good (if they make sense biologically), but what's ridiculous is making people hide their emotions or shaming them for liking things that are "boyish" (or "girly").
      People from the extreme left (or what people on the internet call "libtards") don't understand gender norms, and have no idea that they are more comforming than people in the middle (i.e. most people), they think that just because someone likes things made for the opposite gender it makes them a trans person (or closeted trans person), when in reality they are confusing personality with gender (which *can* affect personality, but should be considered a separate thing).
      Also Chu-chu-ru!

    • @rubyrootless7324
      @rubyrootless7324 6 років тому +95

      @@comicsans1689 That's fucked up, my dude. Why would you think that? Yeah, it was useful back in the day when the work around the house took up a majority of the day, but that's just not the case anymore.
      Putting pressure on the job working half and hindering the house working half is just stupid if you could let everyone do what suits their life style best.
      Also, why should transgender people be a major problem? They're like 0,2 percent of society and aside from the fact that they suffer from depression more than what is the norm (due to people like you who describe them as a problem although they're not hurting anyone), they are just like everyone else and thus just as hardworking.
      I'd advise you to actually talk to trans people before shitting on them.

    I am a female japanese, I live in Japan, and I was a Hikikomori when I was about 28. I studied in England when I was a teenager away from my parents, I think I was very desciplined. I went through a lot of depressions and self denial which is still my issue. I think I'm still Hikikomori a little bit because I've always felt scared to go job hunting, I don't know what made me think that I'm a worthless person in this world. But I've finally realized that thinking in such negative way isn't doing any good to my life and even to society, so I've decided to at least make possitive thinkings, like when I wake up in the morning and go pray at the Shinto Shrine. Before, I did not know how to think possitive, but I do get a lot of help (not a rental sisiter though^_^) and possitive thinking of my future is actually working get out of depressions!!

Then the young people go back home into suuuper conservative, often downright oppressive families where more often than not a young adult is supposed to make the parents proud, first and foremost. Who people are as individuals, what they want and like, doesn't really matter to anyone quite often. That plus a job market that's basically like a pool of sharks and you got a recipe for disaster. Obviously there are many other reasons for the rise of Hikiko as well but those are the basics.

    • @xenoblad
      @xenoblad 5 років тому +63

      Capitalism always will generate winners AND losers.
      This is inevitable.
      Outside of Japan we call them homeless people or housewives.
      There will ALWAYS be more able body adults then there are jobs, let alone well paying jobs to be happy with. This is because demand determines the supply of jobs and because not all of the revenue a business makes goes to the workers, the buying power of the workers goes down after each cycle of money.
      The ones accumulating the profits barely spend much of their income on consumer items. The rich spend their money on NEW investments to generate even MORE wealth.
      With Japan's focus on robotics, this problem will only get worse.
      Perhaps worker ran cooperatives could stop this, but it's too late to rely on that.
      This is why North Korea has consistent population growth and birthrates above replacement, but South Korea has birthrates below replacement and world record suicide rates.
      Capitalism has no room for losers and because not everyone can be a winner, capitalism will slowly eat away at the people inside it.

    The reason Hikikomori is a thing in Japan is because parents let it happen. because they're afraid of the social stigma, they hide the kid, continue to feed him, pay for all their expenses, and so the behavior continues and takes on ridiculous proportions. it's not a "condition" or a special disease, it's depression, often caused by bullying. But whereas in other parts of the world, it would get treated earlier on, in Japan it's just left to fester.
    that said, I think it's really good people are finally trying to do something about it. those rent-a-sister people are a good thing. and those halfway houses even better. I hope that the phenomenon grows to have more than just that one company doing it.
    Still, they are trying to fix a problem way too far down the road. What needs to change is parents' attitudes (and Japan's attitude towards mental health) and focus on getting their children help right away. Not after they've locked themselves in a room for 10 years.

      "Always" is a bit of an exageration. You, as a counsellor, are building the hikikomori's "social muscle". If you fail, he won't trust you. If you fail a bit later, he will trust only you, but you won't be able to convince him to trust other people. But there is no reason to assume that you can not teach him how to trust others and that he won't be able to let you go once he is standing confidently in his life.

You as well as the counselor do not know them. To assume you do, then "teaching" someone else to do so is setting them up for failure as well as disappointment. Toddlers in Japan compete to get into the best kindergartens. And then primary-schoolers compete to get into the best intermediate schools, and this goes on to college. Some kids don't want to compete with others. A lot of people in Japan come to realize that cost of _trying_ in such a toxic environment isn't worth the benefit of having done so, and carries with it too much hazardous risk. If the culture is determined to hurt you just for existing, why try to engage it?
    Hence we have _futōkō_ or school-avoidant children who don't want to engage if doing so risks being bullied, hurt or shamed. We also have _hikikomori,_ or socially-avoidant adolescents and adults. We also have _sōshoku danshi,_ men who are disinterested in engaging with women if doing so means adhering to the highly competitive traditional Japanese custom, again it's just not worth it, and the society has long since decided these people should be disregarded in order to preserve a cruel culture.
    _Hikikomori_ does not correlate with known mental disorders only because those who've studied it have not bothered to look. In fact, a cross examination across many cases have demonstrated indications of PTSD or autism spectrum or major depression, often they _fulfilled criteria for multiple psychiatric conditions._ Only one in five were _primary hikikomori,_ that is, isolated from society without any indications of other mental disorders. The thing is, these are all based on tiny samplings of less than one-hundred cases. No-one's gathered data across thousands, and it's hindered since families feel compelled to hide _Hikikomori_ to avoid familial shame.
    So this is a societal problem, one of several phenomena that emerge from a culture that favors competition over cooperation, elitism over inclusion and preservation of institutionalized tradition over regard for the individual.

      Not everyone likes dogs. Some people find them extraordinarily annoying. Bringing them one would do the opposite of lifting their spirits and just add stress by leaving them annoyed. Because of social pressure, they’d have to pretend to be polite and nice with the animal since that is what is expected. The person bringing the dog as a ‘benefit’ will almost never have any idea that all they did was frustrate the person more.
      It’s probably better to ask the person ahead of time if a dog or other annoying creature is something they’d actually want on a particular visit.

Used to do it every day, but I got burned out. It can definitely be too much when you are in a fragile condition and barely know how to take care of yourself. But it also lifts my spirits to be out in the nature with an animal that doesn’t judge me and loves me unconditionally.

    This issue isn't only in Japan. You could say that I am a recovering female hikikomori. I study part time at a quiet university where there is more support for students. Each week, I see a psychologist & work one whole day. The rest of my free time is spent in my room. Honestly, being around people makes me feel suicidal. From 6 -10 years of age, I was bullied & isolated by my classmates. The isolation happened again from 13 to 15 years of age. The environment that I was raised in was unstable too. My parents also had very high expectations for me. I learned from a young age that it is better to be alone than to be disappointed or heartbroken. I don't want anyones pity but i want people to understand that there are reasons why people turn out this way.

I was an entry level office worker... So people assumed I am a loser..but I had a rental property and $150,000 in the bank, I also worked 20 hours on the weekend. I did not consider myself a loser. Anyone who doesn't try to better themselves or hold their own I feel sorry for. I also got a 97percent on my medical billing course.

      It's not anxiety - people who immediately start competing with you as soon as they meet you are uncomfortable and awkward to be around. It's an insecurity/anxiety issue on their part, most people are like that and therefore if you are in the minority who aren't you tend to avoid them

    Ok I'm 80% sure that the reason Kenta was bullied in school wasn't because of his high voice. I'm pretty sure the other boys in the class were just jealous because he got a lot of attention from the girls in the class. Honestly if I was in his class I would want to be friends with him too, he's a cutie. But that kind of stuff happens everywhere not just Japan. I'm sure everyone could remember a boy from school that got along with a lot of girls and the other boys would bully him or call him gay and stupid stuff like that. It's just pure jealousy.

      Your not entirely wrong, i usually get along with girls better than boys and i was bullied for it among other things, even today boys would tease me for it, just last week i was on an MUN Trip and i spent a lot of time with girls than boys, and i was teased for it especially by the macho boys. Boys can be also a jealous lot too

      Happened to my friend too! We girls got along with him because he already had a girlfriend and wasn't after any of us, and the platonic attention was amazing compared to most boy's predatory attention. The other boys were extremely jealous that he not only had a girlfriend, but every other girl's attention too and bullied him!

    • @brainlessoaf
      @brainlessoaf 5 років тому +80

      OK, firstly, this entire video is about the scale of the problem rather than it being some weird foreign quirk. It's a huge issue in Japan (kinda weird considering Japan is all about politeness and respect, but eh). That's why they have a dedicated word for it, when the closest we have is "withdrawal" which is kind of vague. We have it in the West, yes (they even mentioned that in the video), but it's much less common and you rarely hear about actual "hikikomori" behaviour. People will shut themselves in, but not for years at a time.
      It's also more than agoraphobia and depression; it's a fear of interaction period. Agoraphobics aren't necessarily terrified of other people and depressives are generally more apathetic than miserable/fearful. I'd liken it more to extreme social anxiety than depression.

    • @Michael-lc8yl

    It's called being a hermit. We have people like this in the US as well. My grandfather and aunt were hermits. My aunt would stay in her house and sing to herself/play video games. This was in the early 90s, she still does this over 27 years later. Lots of people isolate themselves, for a multitude of reasons.

    As a long term resident of Japan (since 2001), I wrote about this phenomenon in my 2009 book about Japan. This could only be an issue in japan. But as Japan began exporting its geek culture in the "cool japan" campaign it launched in 2002, we are beginning to see this internationally. In a nutshell, Japan is a pressure cooker society at every level, from infanthood to death. And some people simply can't cope. What's more social ineptitude in a virtue in Japanese society. Social skills which people take for granted in the west, are simply lacking in Japan. Another factor is the gross leniency of parents here. As a jamaican, I can't even fathom, not even remotely, telling my mother that I didn't want to leave my room. I rescued one of those hikkikomoris back in 2004, he was the brother of one my then girlfriends. Hadn't left his room since elementary school and he was 18 when i met him. So he was there for about 7 years. He was curios about this kokujin, so i got him to go to karaoke with me and sing songs from his favorite band, Spitz. Then i got him to start going to the gym with me at the Kobe YMCA. He then started studying for his university exams and actually got in. His parents tell me they are permanently indebted to me. And check the irony: His sister told me, he would advise her to stop dating the foreigner, because I was dangerous. But this dangerous gaijin saved his life. If you guys are interested, my book is titled, 'Black Passenger Yellow Cabs: A Memoir of Exile and Excess in Japan. Let me know what you think.

      It’s most likely the camera used to film the excerpts used on the templates had different quality than the rest of the video’s camera quality. So a stylistic decision was made to maintain the video quality. It looks like the smaller videos were on a selfie stick honestly, so were shot with an actual smart phone or go-pro or something similar.
