    Another great advantage in using standard quick fittings is that IF the firefighters turn up they can continue from the hose you already have laid out or/and switch pumps to one of theirs. (I checked going to my local "bombers" with the fittings I had)

    • @FontedaPipaPortugueseFarmLife
      @FontedaPipaPortugueseFarmLife  2 роки тому +3

      That's a very good point although these fittings are slightly different to the Portuguese fireman's connectors.
      From our experience the firemen turn up quickly enough but they get stuck in under orders from their boss with their own hoses, we built this to help in places they arent and hopefully calm any flames before they arrive, hoping we dont ever need it again.

    That put a fair bit of water out ,quite a reasonable distance . so if there is a fire you could drench the surrounding area and hope that stops the fire well before it gets too near the house / Add a wheelbarrow to move it round quick and your sorted !

    Just and FYI I learned many years ago running self priming pumps at fires. I was priming the pump following the MFG instructions, by pouring water in that little 1/2" hole on top. A local plumber who was also on the FD, in formed me of the error of my ways and pointed out that the discharge for the pump went to the exact same spot at the priming port and that 1 1/2" hole was much easier to pour water in then the 1/2" hole on top. A short time later we also replaced that priming plug with a silcock (1/2" x GHT thread). Thow on an old washing machine hose and you had ready to use by-pass / bleeder, as well as a way to fill Indian Tanks or even run a garden hose nozzle to protect the pump.

    Alex, this is absolutely a fantastic and essential vlog. I seen previously how ur farm was invaded by fire. see you have only 4.5k followers but to be honest any one in Portugal who portuguse is weak and English is better would appreciation this. I know it is a topic some people would ignore and want the service to be provided. A small suggestion would be the involvement of the bombersderios( spelling) who speaks good English to recommend preventive measures.( Fire cuts maybe you could give more ) On that point farmer for fun little Joe does subtitles in Portuguese. Maybe others could do subtitles in other European languages.Finally I love this one...... Fire drills at 4am thank you and stay safe

      Hi there Don, thanks for the comment.
      if you go to the bottom right of the video there is a little box with "CC" on it, if you click that it brings up translation in any language ... i just tried it and the Portuguese subtitles were spot on for what i was saying.🙂
      The problem with the firemen is they are always so busy and would be a huge video, while it would give some great information it would be hours long.
      I think common sense is the best way to go, just keep the grass short and keep trees cleaned and pruned, then it is down to the day, the day it hit us the farm was ploughed to dirt yet the wind was so strong that day the 30 meter long flames consumed everything in front of it... we didnt have our fire pump then🙄👍🙂

  • @rasputindasilva858
    @rasputindasilva858 2 роки тому +1

    The best defence is the atack. Start burning everything so when the fire arrive won't find anything to burn.

    • @FontedaPipaPortugueseFarmLife
      @FontedaPipaPortugueseFarmLife  2 роки тому +3

      Good advice! but it will still burn what's left, that's what happened to us 3 years ago.. the fire went from tree to tree as the land was ploughed to dirt🙄😪

  • @Tigger4747
    @Tigger4747 2 роки тому

    Really, really useful! I could never figure out how to use PTFE tape and now I know. :)) Also some good tips about how (not) to use those types of spanners, how to link up things that don't quite fit, etc. You should make more of these basic instruction videos.
    By the way, could you use solar panels to power water pumps so you didn't have to burn so much diesel/petrol, or would that require expensive batteries to produce enough power to move water in volume and put out a fire?

    • @FontedaPipaPortugueseFarmLife
      @FontedaPipaPortugueseFarmLife  2 роки тому

      Glad it helped Tigger, You could use solar panels to run a water pump but like you said it would need a decent solar system to run a pump capable of keeping up with our petrol water pump.
      But for fire you could use a smaller pump, even a garden hose from normal house pressure is better than nothing and works well on fires in short grass when flames are low.
      Lets hope you never need to find out👍
