We were awarded his house as payment by the court but his wife had taken everything from inside, now she is in court for what she has done.

Our builder took 30 months to finish our house and that's after pushing him hard in the last six months or so. The contract said 12 months, which we knew was optimistic, but we were shooting for 18-20 months. By the end of the process, we wanted to never hear his name spoken, let alone actually having any further in-person dealings with him. That said and to be fair, he never did anything dodgy money-wise and always returned our calls (before and after the project was completed). After hearing your story I even think we should invite him over for dinner :-) Good luck to you going forward!

The problem i see is that you, without language knowledge, tried to move to a poor country, and thought they will not try to ripp you off. There is any reason but money to have you welcome along with them, since it's impossible to integrate since you don't speak their language. Then the second big problem is that you tought that the citizens follow the law. You must allways remember that in a poor country the priority is money then the law, with law you can't buy food.
You dont give a big amount of money before the work is done to poor citizens. Its too tempting to keep it.
Then, you dont make any friends suing in Portugal. Mostly, when a person try to disappear or die you stop and accept the money is lost. Otherwise you will no longer be happy in that village.
They are good ppl and will help you a lot but only if you are good to them
Doesnt matter if you live in Paraguay or Portugal. It's how it works
As a Portuguese citizen, i would like to extend my deepest apologies, to what can only be described as as a nightmare. Please do not allow these few rotten apples to persuade you from leaving beautiful Portugal. The justice system, just like the government, and the people themselves, do not move to the same pace as in other major developed countries. We need people like yourselves, and others that have moved to Portugal over the years. Rest assured, justice will be served.
We love Portugal and the people, If it wasnt for them and us loving Portugal so much we may have left. Sadly bad people live in every country. 🙂

What absolutely horrible costly situation. The delaying of resolve is even worse. There are so many positive things in Portugal too bad you have experienced some of the worse. That was a moving story and top of all that you had the fire which was devastating many people would have given up but it shows how strong you are as a family

So sorry, you have had such a torrid time, anything legal is very draining both mentally and financially, years ago we had to fire builders, and get in others to finish work, it was a reality check and learning curve for us, and a real strain on our marriage, we learnt a good lesson the hard way, get at least 3 references and a referral by word of mouth cannot be under estimated, Portugal is a beautiful country, which like any other has good and bad tradesmen, you cannot take honesty and integrity for granted, glad to see you have taken it all in your stride and talking about it, will help others avoid this type of builders fraud, I do hope you get closure of this matter soon.

In spite of your builder problems you’ve all done very well on your farm, just look at that healthy herd and a super new barn for them to be secure in at night & in bad weather . Yes it wasn't the best welcome but he also ripped off the carpenter and window man who he knew well. The Portuguese friends we have here more than make up for it, some of those in our village with the least to give, give the most in many ways. True love living here.

What a story, I am so sorry for your financial and emotional losses. It is no consolation but in Miami I have heard mamy similar stories of contractors who just disappear. Roofs left half done, homes uninhabitable due to plumbing undone. Courts backlogged for years and no resolution. Best wishes for a final judgement against that woman this year.

What a dreadful thing to happen. Some people can be so unjustified mean and nasty, and in this case, criminal. All the best. Yes, the language difficulaties are a big hinderence and even a nightmare. I am convinced it does make a difference the way you are treated in business.
Trouble is he was recommended by many people, then after it went wrong we heard of all the bad jobs he had done. We live and learn🙂

Alex, sorry your family have had such rotten luck with dishonest people taking advantage and ripping you and your family off. I do hope you eventually get some justice via the courts. I for one would be interested in learning more about the sequence of events, and any lessons that you can share with us.
My wife and I are looking for a suitable property for ourselves in the Castelo Branco district, we were there viewing potential properties a couple of weeks ago, and will return to continue our search in a couple of weeks time. Best wishes for the 3rd of March.
We are a one in a million case but i would say if you are worried start on a few small works, see how it is and go from there. The Portuguese are lovely caring people.

I feel your pain and heartache as I had a similar case in the UK with a builder. Our court case was taken by building control and took about 2 years however, he had nothing in his name so we got nothing and was advised not to make a personal claim against him which almost killed me as I saw him buying new cars and obviously spending money on his own home in his gf name. It consumed my life for many years. It can be soul destroying I know but you are strong and brave people who will come through this. Sorry to hear that, for us, like i think for you.. it isnt what happened it is how it still effects us today, all our money gone and not having our second floor we can use, having to fix things you paid for even 8 years later, that can be soul destroying like you said.

I sincerely hope justice prevails & you get the compensation you very much deserve. You make comment in the video of the builder's wife/partner collecting rent from other properties initially owned by the builder, make sure your Solicitor & Court are aware of this fact, it may provide further possibilities of compensation. I'm a builder, I never did that in my life, I may guess rather your builders were not yet confirmed builders, the court in his wisdom took more than four years to give a verdict.
I'm sorry to hear about the situation you are facing with the house.
he had been working in the area for years, he came recommended but think he was planning it all along as he also ripped off the local carpenter and committed fraud with the man who supplied our doors and windows.......... but karma got him quickly as he ended up under his tractor after a few too many drinks.
We still only live on the ground floor as there are no floors upstairs even after paying for them, a job for after we have the goat milking parlour finished and we some income coming in.
We just have to keep plugging away🙂
Oh gosh I do feel for you, this feels all too familiar to me. it’s something that always stays with you unfortunately. Same thing happened to me in 2007 and I went into a real depression having lost all of my money on terrible and substandard work where everything done FAILED. The builder went bankrupt and I couldn’t claim (U.K) I really hope you get a positive resolution to the court case, you deserve a lovely home once all of this is over. I genuinely hope you come out of this with some joy in your heart. Keeps the faith and I am glad you have each other and are still fighting the good fight. Can’t tell a lie, I am looking to move to Portugal but from my own experience I am terrified this would happen to me. Really holds me back.

we were very unlucky out here and this isnt normal, best advice is if you choose a builder get them to do some small works, see what they are like. never pay cash only bank transfer as we were advised by lawyers.
Dont let this put you off, we are still here because we love Portugal and the people.

I am so sorry for the hardships you have endured so far. I hope that the girlfriend is brought to justice and that better times are ahead for you guys. You certainly deserve it! I was also gutted just recently by it appears to be the estate agent in Castelo Branco selling us a house. We reached an agreement, paid our deposit.....that magically disappeared. The police are currently investigating....But planning on coming to Portugal very soon and currently searching for a farm with housing and projects for four adults and a nice plot of land to go with it. Let me know if you know of anything ideal.
That is dreadful, i hope there is just some sort of mistake as estate agents have to follow certain procedures so i hope there is a paper trail of your payments.
We were advised to pay everything by bank transfer here to stop things like this happening and any cash payments of over 2thousand Euros is illegal so again bank transfer.
We really wish you the best of luck in getting your money back.
Right now we don't know of any properties for sale but we are sure you will find the place of your dreams. 🙂
