RMS Adriatic: The Big Four Class' Liner of Luxury
Вставка
- Опубліковано 5 вер 2024
- The RMS Adriatic was the last of the "Big Four" class and by far the most luxurious. Keep in mind, I'm an idiot with a mic, not an expert, so go easy on me. Thanks for all your support!

I don't know why but the idea of Adriatic and Umbria racing is hilarious. I just like to imagine both captains hurling insults at each other the whole way to New York.
I wish that concept could be used for reality TV.
“Oi E.J. Your running a bit slow there aren’t ya?”
“Really? Is that why the Umbria is staring at my giant ass?”
“I bet we’ll make it to New York first!”
“We’ll be on our way back to Southampton by the time you dock!”
Meanwhile Murdoch is just shaking his head in disapproval.
and of course all the insults are done over morse lamp or telegram lol
I'd also like to imagine a faster ship overtaking both of them at some point while going unnoticed by the _Adriatic_ and _Umbria,_ with the faster ship's crew thinking to themselves, "What on Earth are they doing?"
Caparthia’s Marconi Room: “Hey captain you gotta hear this.”
“What is it?”
“Umbria and Adriatic are at it again.”
“Those fools. That is not how you use company equipment.”
Some other ship cuts in to ask how the weather is and Adriatic stops and says “Quite calm actually.”
I love your style. No idea why you don't have 100k or more views on this, the liner community could easily do it.... some people don't like mixing humour and history. I've been called tasteless for making Titanic jokes... well I enjoy it a lot. We were missing a more lighthearted channel that makes a few jokes. I felt personally offended by "ships don't have feelings". 10/10. Liked, subscribed and recommended to fellow degenerates.
I like jokes, not sure if I would make a joke about a disaster where a bunch of people died in the environment where you learn about the accident. I wouldn't make a joke about the twin towers as I study the history of the twin towers for example, but I like acidic humor and i make this jokes casually. I wholeheartedly agree, I think mixing a little humor is great. This channel is really underrated
I never thought I’d see the day when a Sonichu Medallion and Ocean Liners would appear in the same video
The writing on the Postcard of the Adriatic says,
Louis van de Poel, Vredestraat 4, Anvers, Belgique.
So the Vredestraat 4, in Antwerp, Belgium! It's a Dutch name.
Left is From M Oakley Fulham London not sure what road though
You're videos are sooo underrated. The humor is spot on. We really needed someone funny in the ocean liner UA-cam space.
Your* 🤓
Literally, like everyone is all so serious and stiff
Like c'mon have some humor lol
Captain Smith is known to have claimed the _Titanic_ as "unsinkable" when he said that modern shipbuilding had gone beyond the possibility of ships sinking. In reality, this quote is taken out of context, as he was actually talking about the _Adriatic._ Here is the full quote:
"I will not assert that she is unsinkable, but I can say confidently that, whatever the accident, this vessel would not go down before time had been given to save the life of every person on board. I will go a bit further. I will say that I cannot imagine any condition that would cause the _Adriatic_ to founder. I cannot conceive of any fatal disaster happening to this ship. Modern shipbuilding has reduced that danger to a minimum."
In a sense, Smith was sort of correct, as that bunker explosion in 1922 seems to have been the closest the _Adriatic_ came to sinking. Tragically, one of the men killed in the explosion was _Titanic_ survivor Christopher Shulver, who typically sailed under the pseudonym "John Dilley."
So in safety: Adriatic > Titanic
@@CJODell12 It doesn't work like that. If a ship that is thought to be practically unsinkable suffers damage that causes her to sink, it would be too much for any ship.
Adriatic's Bridge being separated from the super structure is one of my favorite things on ocean liners
It’s called an “island” or “flying bridge” and all of the Big Four ships had this feature.
During the return trip of Adriatic’s final transatlantic voyage, she carried a mere *_115_* passengers back to Liverpool. Contrast this to the *_2,502_* passengers she carried to New York during her maiden voyage in 1907.
115?
Cod zombies
Nice another upload from one of the best channels on the platform
It's still baffling to me why he only has 13k subs...
@@suhandatanker Because his content isn't targeted for 10 year olds.
@@HyperVegitoDBZ at least he will know that no matter how small he is, we still love his videos.
@@HyperVegitoDBZ or he should make only titanic content, but obviously that'd become stale and be bad for the channel in the long run.

The Sonichu was unexpected!
O Marcus, I was thrilled when I saw you posted a new video this morning, and waited eagerly all day to get home and watch it. Thank you for you work, mate. You are a treasure amongst the Boat People.
His name is Marcus!
Adriatic is my second favorite White Star liner next to Olympic. Also Adriatic had 16 more individual first class staterooms with their own private bathrooms, making for a total of 28 private bathrooms in first class.
the one the post card was sent to is a certain louis van der poel, Berchem, province of anvers (antwerp), that was a passanger sending a post card to Antwerp, my home town (Berchem is one of 9 city districts of Antwerp noadays)! I think it reads "embarked on adriatic after a stay in London" a very short message between friends, considering they were using french to write, despite living in the Dutch speaking half of Belgium points to them being of the elite, so more than likely a first class passenger.
If possible, do you know of any Antwerp city records I could maybe find the name on? I appreciate you helping me out, it’s so cool to have a local help out
Babe wake up new Nautical Study video just dropped
Spending all your money on antique ship postcards really hits close to home! I have a virtual museum of vintage Cap Arcona postcards.
The quality of these just keeps improving, I'm so happy to be here to witness it. You are very funny
There's only a few words I can't read on the post card. But from what I can understand, the left side seems to say that it's from M.Oakley from London. It looks like it says "Estward Rd Feltham London" but that can't be right cuz that doesn't seem to exist. On the Right side it says "Louis Van de Poel, Vredestraat 4 Berchem Anvers Belgique". This seems to be "to Louis Van de Poel" who lives at "Vredestraat 4 Berchem, Antwerp, Belgium". Hopefully I was able to help with the postcard, if not....oh well
"Estcourt Road, Fulham", however, does exist
Another masterpiece from Nautical Study! This has given me a new appreciation for the big four.
The Adriatic is one of my favorite ships so glad to see you do a video about it !
Adriatic reopened White Star Line’s Southampton-Cherbourg-New York service on 3 September 1919 accompanied by the Lapland, to ensure provisional service pending the return of requisitioned ships and the arrival of new liners.
In December, the Lapland was returned to Red Star Line service. From January through June 1920, Adriatic maintained the Southampton service on her own until Olympic returned to service after her post war refit on 25 June 1920.
Throughout 1920, Olympic and Adriatic made a combined 37 crossings and carried a combined 59,660 passengers for an average of 1,612 passengers per crossing.
Olympic carried 28,458 passengers over 16 crossings for an average of 1,779 passengers per crossing and Adriatic carried a career high 31,202 passengers over 21 crossings for an average of 1,486 passengers per crossing.
Adriatic was finally withdrawn from the Southampton route after a last crossing, on 14 December 1921, in view of the arrival of the Majestic and the Homeric. After a Mediterranean cruise in January 1922 and a subsequent overhaul in Belfast, she rejoined her sisters on the Liverpool route on 13 May 1922.
Ironic that the which ushered in such a luxurious high concept as a swimming pool and health spa at sea had all the exterior grace and style of a tramp steamer.
The king has returned
Edit: oops I sent in ismay fan art instead of Morgan fan art
The sonichu medallion and draft notice had me dying
I love glossing over the ss clickbait with the phrase "With the economy and all"
"Bless me Father for I have sinned."
- I hate modern ship designs...
Father: That is based my Son.
Anything after 1950 is utilitarian garbage. There are 3 exceptions. I will not name names but Andrwa Doria knows who she is.
Amen
@@user-lv7ph7hs7l QE2 isn’t utilitarian garbage thank you very much
No idea how much this has made my day!!! I love your videos so much. Such an underrated channel x
RETURN OF THE KING!!
This is my kind of channel. Informative yet funny and entertaining.
I love your use of memes in your videos. My favorite ever is when you showed the pizza floating when you mentioned Italy in the kaiser willhelm video.
I have a post card from 1903 from the Oceanic it was written out and sent. I also have an entire book of postcards from the Normandie that were never written on.
My Father was in the crew, probably in the early 1930s.
I should probably sort through his photos again to see if I can identify any as the Adriatic.
Also I not only have post cards but I also have 100 year old ship cards!
So glad to see him back,And comeing in with a bang!
Yay! Thanks for another great video, I like hearing about the lesser known liners.
It's comforting to know Titanic is still one of the few Ocean Liner whose pools are still full
Just yesterday I was looking through my subscriptions, saw your channel, and thought, "When is he going to make another video???" Glad to see a new one from you :)
Oceanic was for sure not designed with comfort over speed. She was designed mostly as an enlarged version of the Teutonic/Majestic pair with a 21 knot service speed. The other important aspect of the Cymric and Big four is that their lower speed took up so much less space in their hulls, allowing to take onboard much more payload. Oceanic was not at all in this category, having boilers taking up a huge portion of her hull.
Instant classic, solid gold. YT better get that plaque ready.
I literally just realized I could've used your Adriatic model in the video cause I literally have it
@@NauticalStudy I saw it in the intro, no sweat. Have fun next week I'm so peanut butter and jealous, like green with jealous rage. We have a better model of that one now and you just may end up with it :)
YEAHHHHHHH!!!!!! your back!!! I have THOUSANDS of vintage ocean liner postcards. all in hard plastic sleeve holders. organized by shipping company and by ship. all in Alphabetical order. stored in shoe boxes. so, I guess I'm the bigger nerd.
Simplon Jr. over here.
You win I'm not even gonna try at that point
@@NauticalStudy thats OK you will catch up! till then you can do a vid on the Great Eastern! YOUR FAV!
YESS HES BACKK

Ayyyyy I have the same Olympic postcard 💕💕💕
0:44 what’s a Sonichu medallion doing in your post card box
Take a look at the newspaper too
Oh man I missed your videos, welcome back!
Thank the gods of ocean liners, a while back I figured this genius channel just want to... Things, like better things probably but definitely not better for me.
Is everyone just gonna ignore the sonichu medallion?
Read the newspaper shown later.
My family traveled to America on the Cedric
Thank you for that Lego City "HEY!"
You're channel is so underrated
Bright side going to confession got me laughing😂🤣
I’d love to see your snark applied to a video on everyone’s favorite mid-19th century tire fire, the GREAT EASTERN.
The world was just not ready for a near 700 foot long and near 19,000 gross ton behemoth like the Great Eastern back in the 1860s, when ships 3,000 gross tons or less were the rule.
The Sonichu medallion, the draft notice, selling your soul to Barrack "The Rock" Obama, the furries...
All in the first five minutes. I love it.
Also, you probably don't care, but one of those furries has 166k subs on yt
I love that soundtrack!!
But yours is this far better shape than mine
The funniest guy in the ship biz is back!
Wake up dear, Nautical Study just uploaded
Oh thank god your back
He is back
HE DID AN UPLOAD
Entertaining video. Very enjoyable with some terrific information. Well done.
I appreciate the Lego island music :p
Look who's back
Hi Markus could you possibly cover the Canberra?
love u mr nautical study xoxo
13:26 I'm boutta make one, gotta mark it first lol
I write cursive too. I feel your pain. It's just the way I learnt it from my ancestors. I know that's no excuse and doesn't make it right and it doesn't bring back the thousands of hours wasted by my countries education system on deciphering my homework or essays. But alas it is too late for me. My scribbles will dazzle cryptographers for centuries if someone cared. But I will try not to pass my affliction onto the next generation. And phones that can print post it notes cannot be that far off.
its incredible to me that countries discourage cursive writing. In my country we are literally taught how to write curisive when we're around 10. i remember doing it and I'm only 21 now so i wouldve started it in the early 2010s.
Some of the memes and the jokes in this video made my day. It keeps the video fresh
yes hes back!
Any chance you could do a video on the Edmund Fitzgerald and other Great Lake freighters?
