    Fun fact: I originally had a superhero theme for this video, and had to re-record ALL of the audio because I abandoned the idea. The font used in the thumbnail is a remnant of this. Because of how strenuous it was to basically do it all over again, I’m not a huge fan of this video.

      In my library is "Great Passenger Ships That Never Were: Damned By Destiny" by Williams & Kerbrech. It is an excellently researched book that gives accounts of many liners proposed but never built. With highly informative text and lavishly illustrated, the book is extremely interesting to learn about the topic. And yes, there is a nice section on the 60,000 ton White Star liner Oceanic, which never got past the laying of the keel. It's pricey, but well worth it imo. Cheers.

    A rather interesting event occurred late in _Majestic’s_ career: On May 6, 1913, 27 year old trimmer William Keon attempted suicide by jumping overboard, but was saved by First Officer David Blair, who was awarded a King’s Medal…and a pair of binoculars.
    The ironic part is that this is the same David Blair who was meant to be _Titanic’s_ second officer only to be removed from the crew, accidentally taking the key to a locker that held binoculars for the lookouts, though given the dark conditions, binoculars wouldn’t have made a difference.

    • @TracyA123
      @TracyA123 3 роки тому +9

      The whole "Blair had the key" bit is a myth. To believe this one has to think that the officers of the Titanic were incapable of breaking into a storage locker. Think about it... Do you really think old EJ Smith was like "That bloody Blair! He has absconded with the key to the storage locker that has life saving equipment! My God Murdoch! If only there was some way we could get into this storage locker! Alas, it is locked with the most secure mechanism in history...a skeleton key lock! We have no other option than to wait TWO WEEKS until we can track down that Blair!"? Of course during the sinking he shouted "DAMN YOU BLAIR!!!". Why this myth is believed so easily is just moronic...see what I did there? Anyone? The reference to the video? No one? Shit

      Not possible really. Considering no ocean liners have been built since the Queen Mary 2 in 2004, it's very unlikely to happen. Besides, I'm sure if anyone wanted a new ocean liner to look like a classic ocean liner, most would look to the superliners of the 1930s and 1940s.

    Fact Check:
    As was the rule with all White Star liners, in Third Class, single men were berthed forward and single women, married couples and families were berthed aft.
    One big change with Teutonic and Majestic was they were the first to provide two and four berth cabins for Third Class passengers, albeit in a limited capacity.
    Third Class accommodations were on the two lowest passenger decks titled the Main and Lower decks. In the stern there were four compartment sections, two on each deck. The forward of the two sections on the Lower Deck contained an array of two and four berth cabins with about 150 berths which were strictly reserved for married couples and families with children.
    The remainder of the Third Class passengers were berthed in 20-berth dormitory style cabins similar to what had been used on the Oceanic class ships, Britannic and Germanic. One interesting note was these dormitories were built with shutters in the walls to provide added ventilation.
    Passengers were provided with access to pantries and wooden tables and benches in each compartment for their meals. The large dining rooms which would be the standard on later ships were added when the twins underwent extensive refits in 1901 and 1904 respectively, and the dormitory cabins in the stern were replaced with the more standard four berth cabins in order to match the layouts of newer ships

    Amongst my ocean liner ephemera is an unused postcard of the RMS Majestic. This is a PMC (Private Mailing Card) published 1898/1901, and shows a beautiful lithograph of the ship on front. Per US Congressional law at the time, no messages were allowed on the back--only the address. Front text below the picture states the ship's tonnage, length and Ismay, Imrie & Company. Cheers to my fellow enthusiasts of the Golden Age Of Transatlantic Liners.

    I didn't realise that the "Teutonic twins" as you call them were the only White Star liners in an era that Cunard produced Campania/Lucania; Caronia/Carmania; Lusitania/Mauretania even perhaps Umbria and Etruria (although they had sails...). So White Star may have produced "interesting" but I'd suggest Cunard did more with more...
