In fairness to our friend Drachinifel, he occasionally throws out a really dry one-liner from time to time, very British humor but if you're into that he's pretty good.

I feel like it would be cool to talk about a comparison between olympic and mauretania, or compare Olympic to britannic, to show how the first and last of the Olympic pic class differed.

Just a correction, the ship was under a "shared" command at the time she ran aground. There was a "Naval Captain" and a "Merchant Marine Captain". The reason was that no naval Captain had experience sailing such a large non-naval vessel. The navigation "error" was compounded by three conditions: differences of opinion over the correct position as stated, due to unformilarity with the area, a complicated by very strong tidal currents and poor visibility.

It is worth mentioning that the Oceanic pretty much was an enlarged version of the Teutonic and Majestic, i.e. more evolutionary than revolutionary in her design. Teutonic and Majestic's general arrangements were more or less the same as Oceanic's. This becomes extra apparent if you look at the Majestic after her 1902-03 refit.
Although not a record breaker, the Oceanic was still an express liner, like her little sisters capable of a good 20 knots. The "slow and luxurious" strategy that is so often attributed to the White Star Line was actually mostly manifested with the "Big Four". (The Olympic class ships were also "express liners" with their 21-22 knot service speeds.)
Another point of interest is the Oceanic's unusually tall funnels. This was likely due to new philosophies in steam engine technology emerging in the early 1890s, where natural draught had become more important than before, which was achieved by installing these really tall funnels. Compare for example with Cunard's Lucania and Campania of 1893 which had similar giant smokestacks.
Due to her speed, Oceanic was also one of the four liners selected to inaugurate White Star's Southampton via Cherbourg express service in 1907, a very important event in history of Atlantic ocean travel. After the introduction of the Olympic in 1911, she was her continuous running mate until the war started.

Having worked as a cabinetry maker for a number of years from about 1999 to 2006, I can say that what they put into these ships back in the day was nothing less than extraordinary. Workmanship was obviously important back in those days. Artificial workmanship seems to suffice now. Unless you really know what you're looking at. At this point I tend to think it was wasted effort as most of these ship would be sunk during wars as scrapped without little regard to the efforts that went into their fitting out.

Welcome back! So this must've been where Olympic (and I guess also Titanic) gained their tendencies to have run-ins or near run-ins with other vessels and geography and such. Speaking of Titanic and near run-ins with other vessels, are we just gonna ignore the fact that Oceanic was right next to the City of New York when Titanic almost sucked that one into her aft? Sheesh. 🤣
    Imperator next?? 👀

I agree with lightollers take on gaudiness, white starling was very conservative with its interior design.
Beautiful, well ordered, and ornate but not gaudy and suffocating.
I think this is really shown with the comparison between the Oceanic's and Kaiser Wilhelm Der Grosse's dinning saloon .
