A Look at Lars Ulrich's Gear (Part 2) with Chris Russio
Вставка
- Опубліковано 26 вер 2024
- In part 2, Chris and I take a deep dive into each and every kit that Lars used from the iconic Black Album Artstar II kit up to todays yellow StarClassics for the 72 Seasons tour, and everything in between. We discuss his major changes in gear including the shrinking of his kit and him getting rid of the mega power tom kits for the modern StarClassics. Part 2 covers from 1990 through to today and we touch on many aspects of his earlier kits that weren't mentioned in part 1. Lars Ulrich and Metallica are hard rock icons and this deep dive gear episodes will give you an even greater appreciation of one of the most famous drummers in history!
Keep up with Metallica at www.metallica.com

I watched both of these episodes & I wanna give mad props to Chris Russio for doing a phenomenal job. You’re a regular dude who loves drums & Metallica. You’re not a podcaster (to my knowledge) or a dude that works in media & you knocked this out of the park man. Can’t be easy to film this much content & not say “umm” & “like” & run off topic etc. I know Id sound like a complete moron after awhile with all of that. But you were great man. You might wanna get into this type of thing brother. You got the knack & the knowledge. 🍻 cheers bro!
Very well said! I completely agree, Chris killed it and his passion is contagious. I'd love to see Chris make a UA-cam channel and show his kits and play some covers. Maybe if enough people comment then we push Chris to get on the Tube! :)
I’d like to add also, very professional, the audio sound was great on both ends, mic levels matched perfectly with no visual glitches, everything was pretty amazing to watch. 🤘🏼✌🏼
I’m so happy
I worked at the kick-off gig of the Wherever We May Roam European leg tour on October 22 1992 in Ghent (Belgium). Lars had two identical kits on stage. Two drum kits were typically setup on opposite sides of the stage, with the ability to lower the kits down below the stage or raise it to the stage itself, as well as move the kits around to different positions on the stage. After the show we just had to wheel the risers with the kits fully mounted into the truck. They stayed fully set-up and miked during transport.
Man thats really cool info and it is super cool that you worked on the '92 Belgium show! Thanks for watching and the comment 👍
Awesome couple of videos guys!
As a Lars fanboy/nerd myself I'd like to point out a few things:
- Black Album tour Cymbals, the 19" tended to be an A Rock Crash
- when he downsized the Artstar II in 94, he also used a standard Tama Brass 14x6.5 snare
- the silver sparkle Granstar was infact a Starclassic prototype with Granstar lugs
- the kick drum heads for Load were still initially Pinstripes, he eventually changed to Powerstroke 3. The splash Cymbal was a 12" Z Custom splash.
- St Anger, he still used A Medium Crashes, Z Dyno Beats ALSO, very very briefly, a 10" A Splash mounted on his left side crash. 2nd China was a 20" Z Custom China.
- Tama also released a Lars Signature Bell Brass: 350 were made, he never used one live.
- Death Magnetic is when he switched to A Custom Projection Crashes, he still used his Z Custom Dyno Beats despite the range being discontinued and 2nd China changed to a 20" Oriental China Trash. Marigold Sparkle was Darker than the LU Magnetic Orange finish: 2 different finishes. A 20" A Ping Ride has made sporadic appearances on his setup since then to this day for certain songs eg Bleeding Me. Also changed kick heads to Remo Powersonic depending on the venue which he still does to this day.
- when Hardwired came out, the 1st Black edition of his steel snare was released which he also played; 300 were released. He changed from the Danmar Kick Pads (which were the plastic ones, used since Load) to the Gibraltar Kick Pads, still uses today.
Not meant to come across like I'm picking holes in anything, just offering info haha.
I'm also an owner of one of the 25 Signature Artstar II kits, the only one in the UK - head over to my page if you wanna hear what it sounds like 🤟
Immediately knew you'd comment on one of these lol love your shit man!
When did he use the splash during st anger era?
The black snare that came out with hardwired was limited to 100. He used that one a lot during the hardwired tour. The Black album snare that came out for the 30th anniversary was limited to 300. He uses that one now on the 72 seasons tour.
Whats your channel or site?
This was an awesome interview. The other thing worth mentioning is that in the 2001 alongside the diamond plated signature snare, they also came out with a Lars signature snare that was a scorched earth bell brass.
The 89 kit from the shows in Brazil is not a pearl, its a Luthier, custom made here in São Paulo by Tibério Correa. Great episode!
That is great information. Thank you very much!
@@DrumHistoryPodcast I thank you! Love the podcast, keep up the great work
@DrumHistoryPodcast , Chris and Bart . This drum was made by Tibério Correia, owner of the Luthier Drums brand.
In addition to Mettalica, Exciter and Ramones (probably many others) used this drum kit. It was "stolen" after an exhibition called "international drum exhibition" in São Paulo - 1997.
In this video he explains how it happened.
ua-cam.com/video/YVDp15A9L9k/v-deo.html
And the story of this drum kit is told in this video
(Live in Aquiles Priester Channel) - ua-cam.com/video/q1xR65VLg9U/v-deo.html
In time, thanks for the video about Lars drum kits !!!
Nice, I only found your channel yesterday because of Part 1 and now Part 2 is out. Brilliant work guys.
Good timing! Be sure to check out the other 215 episodes :)
@@DrumHistoryPodcast The GK kit video was pretty cool too!
I paused Some Kind of Monster during the recording of St Anger part, and Lars was clearly playing a blue Ludwig Vistalite snare on his kit.
Appreciate the time and passion. Tremendous guys. 🤘🏻
Thank you, I appreciate that!
I was waiting for part 2, thanks guys!! Didn't disappoint.
Our pleasure, thank you for watching both episodes!
It was so cool to see the black album kit ('94 7 piece variation) make a comeback for the 72 seasons music video sessions!
This was awesome! Thank you so much for putting it together!
Something that I thought would be interesting that was overlooked was the signature bell brass snare drum that was released along with the diamond plate. I feel as though it’s one of the most under appreciated and unknown bell brass snare drums out there. It’s also one of the coolest ones that the Tama pallet has ever offered.I believe Lars used it during S&M, but then obviously it went away.
Made it through both episodes. I’ll probably watch again haha.
Have absolutely adored Lars gear since I was a kid. Thanks for all the details Chris and for you guys caring enough to make these episodes.
So many drummers around the world love these kits and can appreciate this hard work you’ve done.
Cheers
Zildjian actually offered a cymbal microphone system!
For whatever it's worth I saw a handful of shows from 1988-1992 including the first Seattle 1989. The drum sound at the May 1992 Seattle Coliseum shows with what I guess was the white Artstar II - one of the biggest, cleanest live drum sounds I ever witnessed.
A couple of others that come to mind AVH from that same year on what I remember was chrome finished Ludwig and Simon Philiips with the Who in 1989 - he had some red Tamas.
I'm a Yamaha guy but hats off a high respect for Tama particularly from that era. My bandmate/friend had a Tama Granstar and that thing was (and probably still is) great. Real punchy, tons of attack.
This was awesome, Thankyou both for taking the time to do this. We all Love anything Metallica. And Lars inspired me to want to learn drums.but until recently I was never able to start. and even though it's not Tama i have bought my first Drum kit At age 45yrs (me not the kit) and slowly finding the time to have a go at learning from ear and video.
Just found your channel. Big Lars fan, super entertaining, heavy hitter. Great listening to you guys geek out!
Glad you found us, thanks for subscribing!
AAAAHHH! Now it's white kit! My two favorites: the grey one from the damaged justice tour and the white one from the black album tours. Congratulations!! AMAZING WORK!
Love the Lars episode its the best! Hoping to get a Lars Ulrich replica Artstar 2 kit!
The Motherload contest only had one winner. I live about 50 miles from Aberdeen so my friend and me drove out there and got to meet them. They must've signed autographs for a thousand people. That is where i first learned that Lars smoked. He was smoking like a chimney. I couldn't believe it. I've never seen him smoking on TV or in interviews. It was great to see. Smoking rocks!
I was hoping it wouldn't take long to get part 2 on. Thanx guys.
I appreciate you watching - I wanted to make sure this one came out back to back!
Awesome stuff guys! Love all the details.
I was really bummed when episode 2 was done, because it was so much fun to listen/watch to.
Would love to see a Lars Ulrich Studio-gear episode.
Hats off to you guys!
Owner of a Deeper Purple Kit here. Another huge gear nerd, but I keep up more with the modern day gear.
Love all these gear vids. For YEARS I thought Lars' Chrome finish was like a shiny black. Didn't realize it was chrome until watching the previous vid. That shell supporter is interesting but actually pretty unnecessary. Just needed to keep the front reso rim on and if you wanted an open front just cut out the head and have the ring.
Thanks for watching John! That was definitely not my intention but it did slip into more of the classic buddy horror stories
In 1997, Bob Kasha purchased Ahead Drumsticks from Easton Sports...been a long time. I had no idea until I searched. AHEAD is an acronym for Advanced High Efficiency Alloy Drumstick. Who knew?!
Wow. Same here never knew that 😅 That's good to know . Good info there
There are three versions of the signature snare...the original with long lugs, reissue with short lugs, and the Black Album Anniverary with short lugs.
Very cool gear rundown!!! I did some sleuthing a while ago because I had a set of SC Bubingas in Scorched Copper Burst that I wanted to get more drums for, even though that finish was discontinued over 10 years now. Tama still makes Starclassic Maple in Japan but only for the Japan drum market, they moved SC to China about 12 years ago for current production for the rest of the world. Until a year or two ago, you could order Starclassic Maple made in Japan in those discontinued finishes, but it is priced as Star Maple drums, but you don't get the newer hardware perks that are offered on Star currently. Lars' current kit is Starclassic Maple made in Japan in Sunny Yellow Lacquer.
Also worth mentioning: at the time they release the first iteration of his signature snare, two snares were actually released: the diamond plate steel snare, and the BELL BRASS 14x6.5 snare! They discontinued the bell brass snare not because of the price, but also because many who did play and review the snare said it didn't sound any different than the steel snare for 2/3rd the price. Cheers!
3 Points:
1. Nothing will ever beat Lars' justice kit that Chris has in the background. When I first watched the video for "One" that connected me to the drums forever.
2. I really love the kit from '96 - '99. In particular the 1 used on the first S&M - It just had everything you needed in a drum kit. A Ride!
3. Load - Lars went for more of a groove approach. 2 X 4 as an example. Like Bleeding Me, Outlaw Torn also had splashes. The drumming on Outlaw Torn is much different than we are use to with Lars. Check out the middle part of the track starting at 5:11 for reference. ua-cam.com/video/w7DrZ2plOVo/v-deo.html
Really enjoy the commentary!
Big thank you Chris for your time and knowledge! I cant imagine how long it must have taken to gather all this information! You've opened a gold mine for us fellow nerds ! Happy drumming !
Thank you for watching!!
Encino Man: Infectious Grooves (Mike Muir is the singer)
1986 Metallica Play the capital tyesterday in pasaic new jersey. I was a Stage hand. Also help the drum tech set up lars kit. My first Tama kit was the Imperial star. In 1974 or 75. Powder blue
That is awesome. What an incredible experience!
@DrumHistoryPodcast also worked the monsters of rock tour in 1988. Now that was 4 months of Craziness
I can’t believe Lars switched from the Bell Brass snare to a steel snare. That Bell Brass is legendary and highly sought after. I’d love to have one but I can’t cough up 5K for a snare.
At one point Lars had 2 signature snaredrums. A (highly sough after) bell brass and the diamond plated steel. The bell brass was (obviously) double the price. I would love to have one ❤ !
Back in the day they only cost $1000 😂😂
Greetings from South Bend, WA. Thank you so much for the very entertaining and informative production covering the topic of Lars. I loved it from the beginning to present.
I’m not a real Metallica fan, but I am a drum set fan, and you did a marvelous job here.
Sending a hige thank to you... i'm Fan of lars since 1988.... and ita awesome to get this fact's about his drum Kits after so many years..... thanks for all the work your put in .... and like you said - i love to play on my bigger set since 1991 till today
Grettings from 🇩🇪🤘
Thank you guys for making these! I watched them both and enjoyed them a lot! Lars has always been an inspiration to me. He is an iconic drummer. When I was 12 I got a Premier APK drumset, white. When I was about 15 I changed the setup to the same position as Lars had with the white kit when he dropped the 10" and 16". Got black resonance heads and used the green tennis grip tape for my sticks. That was what I could afford at the time.
These days I only have a e-kit, but I recently got myself a pair of Lars' signature Ahead sticks and still love to play along to Metallica songs!
Thank you guys for doing this....
Thank you for watching!!
awesome mini series
Hey Guys, thanks for the shoutout when yall got to talking about guys that own the deeper purple replica kit!!! I been a Lars nerd for 34 years now.
Rock on brother
YES THANK YOU FOR TAKING MY REQUEST!!!
Thanks so much for the great idea. I went looking for your comment to give you a shoutout and couldn't find it in time but I really appreciate it!
@@DrumHistoryPodcast ❤️
Jason Last concert was VH1 MYMUSIC AWARDS 30 November, 2000
The silver sparkle kit with the Grandstar lugs is the first Starclassic prototype kits. Starclassic maple shells with Grandstar lugs.
This was awesome, thanks guys! I’m off to watch the Neil video next!!
Awesome! Thank you!
Ahead Drumstick info to share for more clarity… it started with Easton who made sports equipment but that partnership ended long ago, so its just Ahead which is distributed by Big Bang Dist. Ahead sticks have shock absorption built in so they are better for your hands and arms. They outlast at least 6 pairs of wood sticks which could cost $50, so one pair of Ahead sticks at about $32 is more cost effective, saving us money.
Love this! I have a Lars purple kit. Thought I was the only one that was so into and obsessed with Lars’ drum set up and gear..good to know I’m in good company 😂
The microphones on the toms (and symbols) were ATM350D’s but changed to DPA4099 after S&M2 because the frequency response was better for the recordings of the show. A lot of Audio Technica mics we’re used since the St. Anger period up until S&M2. Kick was AE2500 mounted on a Kelly Shu shock mount, ATM230 I believe on snare top, bottom was a condensor (not sure which type, I have to look it up), also a ATM450 side condenser on hi-hat.
Later during the hardwired tour some Roland RT-30 triggers were also mounted on the toms and kicks.
Great info - thank you!
Dude He had the grey kit then the fuckin white kit lmfao he’s the best. Love Chris.
Splash cymbal was used in the song "Hero of the Day"
These are amazing. I’m a huge drum nerd but I suck at drums. Huge fan of Lars and I’ve never heard anything this in-depth about him. This was much appreciated and impressive as hell.
I always wondered if the sparkle kit with the Granstar lugs was a prototype for Starclassic. Also the St. Anger snare sound is first kinda heard on “I Disappear” and nobody complained…
I have a sparkle star classic. Bought it because it looked like Cunning stunts lol
Thoroughly enjoyed this. Chris's knowledge and attention to detail are incredible.
Watched both episodes. Awesome! Seen em twice back in the day ‘92 and ‘96. Followed Chris on the gram and this channel!
1:04:00 Actually the very last thing they did together was the Metallica Classic Albums Documentary. That's the day Jason left. And it was the exact same day of Cliff's death, September 27th
I also remember that during the Freddie Mercury tribute he had another mismatch set and was using bass drums and floor toms that had chrome lugs and the stands were chrome.
Great series, I watched every second of it and loved all the info.
Great job. That' was a great trip down memory lane. I remember my days looking at the artstar in the window of the guitar center. Still wish i had the money. Fast forward my star classic maple was a custom order based off Lars Kit he played on s&m. I still love i t. I can't believe it was the 80s dreaming about that artstar and now 2 decades playing my blue star classic maples. Thanks for the detail you brought.. oh yah.i have played 2 titan stands since 86 they are incredible quality and durability
Maracanãzinho = Little Maracanã stadium Rio de Janeiro 1989!
🤘🤘🤘
Awesome content! The ’96 live kit’s ride was probably there for Load’s first single Until It Sleeps. Cheers!
specs on that Load era kit splash is a 12” Z Custom Splash - always struck me as wild that of all sizes of splashes the dude could have, he chose 12” LOL
You didn’t mention what I most expected, the studio drum sets :-(
This was cool. I'm not even a drummer, but this was super interesting. The work this guy has put into the research and recreation of those kits. Huge respect.
Hey Chris - thanks! You’re such a great down to earth guy. Respect from the UK!
Excellent video.....thank you guys..
Both videos were great. Lars was a huge influence on my drumming as well as Neil.
Incredible vid! Thanks to the both of you!!!
Easton and Ahead.
I had is a bicycle equipment. That also make headlamps. And as you explained Easton make baseball and softball and other sports equipment. To my knowledge both companies were adjoined to create the drumsticks. Then Easton sold most of their share to a different company leaving Ahead as as the majority share owner. Hence Easton dropping their name from the product
If I remember correctly, The Ramones also used the flame drums in Brazil. And I heard it was stolen in the 90s.
It was a 12” Z Custom splash during the Load era when he brought the ride back which I think was an A Custom Ping Ride.
Something I may add up about Lars keeping his old drum kits… you can clearly see the old white kit on Liz eterna and other videos of the 72 seasons videos
Stumbled on this channel when the stolen kit episode popped up. Then i saw this series. Totally loved it. As a huge Lars fan this waa great to watch. I own a diamomd plate snare and love it. After seing the replicas i want to visit chris and take a tour of that drum room. Thanks again for making this video it was fucking great! 🤘
Back in the early 2000s, I thought I knew everything about Lars' drum kits. And then somewhere around 2020 what used to be a Granstar II kit became am Artstar II. It's so weird to think you know something and then you dont.
Now, for years there was a debate that Lars had a gray kit, some people swore he had light blue kit. If you look at the Metallica museum they had for the Orion festival, it shows a Black and White kit and it's labelled Damaged Justice Tour 1988-1989. But at the end of a Year & A Half video, Lars has a gray kit with chrome hardware. So, is it possible the black & white kit sometimes looked gray or light blue due to shade or lighting?
As for the drop clutch, I've been told DW also by others online. When I contacted Tama in the early 2000s, they said Tama doesn't make a drop clutch and the contact wasn't sure who made his clutch. Now Gibraltar had a drop clutch that looked exactly like Lars' clutch from Seattle '89. However, Gibraltar didn't start until 1993. But that arm matches exactly. Somewhere I have an old catalog with the clutch shown.
Also some more interesting notes, Zildjian had different types of Chinas. They had chinas that are just chinas, then china low boys and china high boys and also swish knockers.
great talk guys! it might be a good idea to get a tour of those drum kit replicas
Man, I never would have realized there were so many variations going on with his kits.
Watched both frmnbeginingnto end. Thank you ao much for this, man if only you did this in the past when I was 15 and my whole life was Metallica and Lars.
Guys….: I absolutely LOVED this ! I’ve been a massive fan of Lars & his kits since about 1988. My dream is to build the chrome Damage kit… maybe one day I will ! My only complaint… the video ended. I could watch this every day when it comes to Lars kits ⚡️⚡️⚡️⚡️
In the Gibson "Icons" interview with Bob Rock he says the St. Anger snare was (in his words) a Ludwig "plexi snare". It sounded like he's referring to a Vistalite but couldn't remember the right name. You can't see one in the SKOM documentary but Bob was pretty adamant about it being an acrylic snare in that interview.
56:33 I remember the mother load contest on mtv. The guy who won the mother load contest actually played bass and got to sit in and play bass on a few songs. But one of the stipulations that they mentioned in the contest was that the guy who won the contest got to hang out with Metallica, free concert at the town bar, and got to keep all their equipment including the Tama drum set Lars was pictured playing on. I remember there was 3 contestants and each of the contestant got to pick one of three semi trailers, and Metallica was inside one of them. Metallica arrived to the dude's house who won in a semi truck trailer. The other two contestants didnt win Metallica but they won a jeep 4x4 that was inside their semi trailer.
Please ask Chris if he cares that I broke my elbow!
Did he ever used his brass signature snare drum?
I’ve never seen him use it live. It’s such a sweet snare. If I remember correct, I could have swore there was an interview where I think the BB came first, and he wanted to make an affordable version for fans, thus the diamond plate. If you’ll notice, the diamond plate shell is the same thickness of the BB and achieves a closer sound to the BB opposed to just rolled brass. (i.e. the LU1465 sounds more like a BB than say the “Power Metal” Brass snares Tama made)
Yes, it was used on the 3D movie „Through the never“
Excellent! Thank you guys for these episodes! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👍🏻
The knowledge you posses is incredible.
Part 2! Fantastic
Thanks brother
I grew up in St Catharines Ontario and Walter Ostaneks a local music store had the white kit for sale in the store. They were a Tama dealer. I was 13-14 years old and would take the city bus there to look at drums. The Lars kit and a giant brown colored Yamaha kit I always remember being in aw over🥁🔥
56:35 OMG this is very interesting, this guy have the best rare shots from Lars! Awesome!
I watched both parts all the way through. You guys did a fantastic job! My favorite kits were the Superstars and the Granstar.
Thanks so much for watching!
So many different kinds of wood, my Tama star series kit sounds amazing. They’ve came along way since then.
Between this and the Neil Peart series, I'm in drum nerd heaven. Thank you! Now let's spare a thought for the poor soul who's currently researching Mike Portnoy's many, many, many [Two hours later...] many, many drumkits for the inevitable 27-hour podcast. :)
It's always been my dream to own the white and black kit. I remember when I was a teenager in school I used to draw that kit on anything I could find. Never got to own the kit, but i have played Tama kits myself because of Lars. Always been a big fan of him and I'm Danish aswell so a lot of danish pride in the mix. I taught myself to play drums from watching the live shit binge and purge box set videos.
This is GOLD!!! Thank you both.
Down to the shoes , 👏🏼 entertaining video my guys 👍🏻👍🏻
Amazing! Thanks! 🙏🏼
What an awesome channel. There was an era during the What I'm assuming was the death magnetic tour where they put Lars closer to the crowd, maybe in the put. For this they used pearl virtual drums so that the bleed from the crowd wasn't picked up by the mics. I'm sure somebody brought this up already.
hey Guys.....i had a really good time watching and listening to this...Ive been playing drums since 1994 and it was Lars who was my first initial hero and first drumming influence and inspiration....Lars drumming style and also the exact gear he played ( as far as sound and looks) was and still is a huge influence on me as a drummer....Id be awesome if you guys could do similar in depth long gear talk / discussions on other well known metal drummers ( Dave Lombardo, Paul Bostaph, Nick Menza, Vinnie Paul, Gene Hoglan, Scott Travis, Nicko Mcbrain)
Like others have said Chris you are very accurate on all of Lars’s gear. I’m like you I prefer the white black album kit. I will say I do like the silver sparkle kit.
Really enjoyed both parts guys thank you for taking the time to put this out. I'd be interested to know about the yellow 72 seasons kit. Sunny yellow lacquer is only available on the Star series drums in the UK. ❤
I watched the whole thing. So good! A couple of things. Chris said Lars used a Gretsch bell brass to record the black album it was actually a Tama bell brass with Grestch drums. Also the kit that Lars uses “in front of the V stage in the DM tour appears to be electronic. For the St Anger album he used a Ludwig accrolyte. As far as triggers go, i thought he did but the raw phone recordings in the M72 tour show the sound to be accurate.
Lastly you both failed to mention the changes in Lars’ hairline over the years he he. Just kidding. I love Lars, he is the reason I play drums…
This was incredible, absolutely great. I love the history and level of detail. Great job and awesome kit replicas. I'm not even a drummer and got so sucked into this just by being a huge Metallica fan and my two favorite eras are the Justice and Black Album.
Hell yeah, thanks for watching man
The drumkit HR used in Brasil isn’t a Pearl.
This drumkit is a legend here um Brazil, it is a Luthier Custom made by Tiberio Luthier!
i hope ypu can do an episode about the drum that he used for RECORDING which was pretty different compared to his live kit. Like when he recorded load, he was still using 24" bass drum with a smaller Starclassic reck toms and in St Anger he was actually used Power Tom again.
You guy should do the same for Dave Lombardo🤟☠️🤟
As far a thinner cymbals go, engineers generally prefer them over heavy ones. Heavier cymbals actually don’t respond as well and can sound really harsh to microphones. We hit drums but it’s better to swipe cymbals.
You should do a show about Tim Alexander’s kit from the band Primus.
Both of you guys; outstanding job. Couldn't ask for anything better. I've been a fan since RTL came out but my least favorite kit (just based on aesthetics) is the Black Album era for whatever reason - I guess white is too boring for me. But I just saw them on August 4 & 6 2023 at MetLife stadium and now yellow is my least favorite. The whole M72 color motif is aesthetically unpleasing IMO (even when Robert breaks out his yellow Warwick bass on this M72 tour). I've been a bass player since 1991 and am a gear nerd not only for bass but for guitars and drums as well. Please keep this series going, cheers!
