If James is the soul of Metallica, then Lars is the heart. Lars is my favorite member of this amazing band. They (unlike other classic bands, like Van Halen) treat their fans with respect. And part of what makes it fun to listen to them is the different eras...different sounds...different styles.
I like your perspective, but I've always seen it slightly different. James is definitely the soul of Metallica, but I think Lars is the mind. He's always the driving force, both in the studio and on tour. His sense of aesthetics is absolutely impeccable. I think Kirk is the heart of the group. He's always been the calm center between the frenetic energies of James and Lars. I think Robert expands on that as well. He takes that heart and brings us into it. He's our link with the energy of Metallica. Always excited, always grateful, always exceptional. I love this band and always will.
Absolutely and not only that, but I will state that his style of drumming is what helped make metallica be what they are. His unconventional style fits perfectly. Where another drummer who might be better wouldn't have made the music as it is.
If every person who claims “Lars sucks” knew just how much work and time he puts in to MetallicA behind the scenes, they would think otherwise. Lars is one of the hardest working most driven musicians of all time.
Many people predate on negativity, just look at society. That's how it is. There were periods, throughout the 21st century, in which Lars, obviously, wasn't delivering the best in live performances. Yeah, it's not cool, but doesn't erase the fact that he IS a great drummer, and the studio and even live albums are proof to that.

It's amazing that Lars has been able to keep himself healthy enough to play live like he does. A top-tier musician, to be sure. The man definitely deserves way more respect.

I don't care what the haters say about Lars, he remains as my ALL TIME favorite drummer. This interview was a pleasure to watch, thank you for posting it!
Lars is the reason I started playing drums over 20 years ago. Although I've gotten way more technical and groove oriented than he's ever been in that time, he's solid as a rock and the reason the band is as good as they are. Another one of my huge influences, Joey Jordison, even stuck by Lars. His contribution to the songwriting process is the reason they are still killing it to this day.
Metallica is a great band, Lars, James, and Kirk have been threw a lot. Most bands would not still be playing at their age. When they added Robert to the band, he was a great addition with energy and fresh ideas. Everyone may not like the type of music they play, but you will have to admit for they are one of the best bands to still be together, and producing great music. When Metallica is finished playing a a lot of people will realize how good they were.
I think, this might be the best "Lars interview" I have seen, the last 30 years! He is reflecting in such a relaxed way, I haven't seen him to that degree, before. I really enjoyed watching it.

The "feeling of disbelief" is a sentiment shared by your long-time fans in a big way. Personally, I've described it as pure gratitude. The first clear realization of it for me was with the release of 72 Seasons; specifically sitting in the theater listening party with friends and family - all of which are long-time fans as well. As I was listening to the album, I was overcome with an overwhelming sense of thankfulness that my favorite band in the world has been making great music for nearly the entirety of my life. The realization that this band that changed my perception of music back in '86 is still massively relevant and active in 2023 is... mind blowing. I can tell you that the feeling of disbelief and thankfulness during that experience was enhanced to levels I cannot properly describe. In short, we share that feeling with you, and we thank you for what you do - and everything you have done 🤘
Everyone who ever complained about the noise can blame this man right here! What an impact he's had on my life! His playing was absolutely ground breaking. In the early days and especially on "Justice" he delved into an innovative way of playing that would catapult a whole new legion of followers. He and Metallica became the wave that every one else was riding. From there on Lars became the Phil Rudd of heavy drumming. Ultimate goove oriented, laying back and making it swing. He's the mastert at that! Big fat drums with tons of feel! Love you Lars! Cheers from Thunder Bay!
I mean we've pretty much got a "making of" for every record since the black album, so hopefully we'll get one for 72S. What I'd really love to hear are the demos. Demos from Hardwired and 72S if there are any.
Lars is great, gets too much hate. He is very responsible for the music we all love, his ear to the ground in the early 80s helped shape an entire shift in metal music and create a new sub genre. He lives and breathes his band and always has, he is a huge music fan, always hands on with the songwriting, he is a huge fan and cheerleader of his own bandmates. Hes great with fans and is always very courteous and welcoming. He is also absolutely bullet proof and has taken so much hate and let it bounce off him. @@shaxow1142I guarantee that most people who have knocked Lars have air drummed his parts at least once. People get lost on the technical side but don't realize that the energy Lars brings to his parts cannot be replicated.

Legendary band!!!! Passion blood sweat n tears and a decade later they are still making and playing great music. Ty Metallica ❤
Metallica es la mejor banda de todos los tiempos y así será por mucho mucho tiempo más.🤘😎
If i could be in a band with any musician and the goal was to be great it would be lars. He wants it more than any musician. No he is not the best but he wants it more than anyone. He is the metalhead who made it to the top. The ultimate metal fan
Lars really is the "leader" of Metallica. He kept things together after Cliff died, Jason leaving, James going to rehab etc. Without him, we would be only talking about Metallica in the past tense.
Lars pushed the bar for years.
I think it’s a VERY cohesive album
Much love and respect from Rotterdam/NL
Can't wait for the making of 72 seasons
Great to see that even not métal poeple and not headbangers kids from new generation know and love Metallica ! This is not usual for Metal band to be loved by every people and every generations since 83. Metallica are the best and I´m fan in Belgium since 84 85 and see them 2e or 24 times on stage in Europe. All support guys! 👍👍🎸🎸🎙🎙🤘🤘🤘🤘💥💥💥
Great album by Metallica
No middle albums
I love metallica 40 more years too go 👍🏻
i hope lars would at least analyze his drum production for the next album. imo Bob Rock works for drum sound still untouchable
Metallica 72 season BRASIL
Will there be making of videos for 72 Seasons?
Just a great dude and a great interview. Thanks for posting, always good to hear from Lars when you want the true state of Metallica, he keeps it real to a fault and doesn't care what ppl think he should say. 100% Respect.
Met him back in concert in Hollywood CA USA 1995 and my friend Joe Schultz had Metallica in Anaheim CA USA Jezebel's night club the rest is history. But for me personally he's nothing but Sheer class. Thanks Sir again band Sir Lars Ulrich you are amazing friend from Buena Park CA USA love you thanks again. Wish you nothing but the best!!!!!!!! Hi!!!!!
Lars accomplishes exactly what he needs to accomplish for metallica to be the gotdammed BEAST of a band that they have been for decades ladies and gents sooo anyone who thinks otherwise can well you know that same ol scenario people

Why do all interviewers ask the same shit that's been asked for 40 years.

I wonder if Metallica will play any shows indoors. I would rather see them in an arena than a stadium.
Lars é um gênio!
