Tarka is a 1973 Albin Vega 27 (8.2m) that I bought sight-unseen and without sailing experience on the island of St. Martin in April of 2017. I was thrust head-first into ocean sailing as I got Tarka safely south from what would become the most devastating hurricane seasons on record. We are now working our way west towards the Pacific.
I am sailing Tarka around the world in part to raise money and awareness for coral conservation by supporting the Coral Reef Alliance. You can learn more here:
www.theadventur...
or visit their website directly:
www.coral.org
If you make a donation to their website directly in Tarka's honor, please send me an e-mail copy of your receipt so I can keep track of Tarka's fundraising. You can forward to:
theadventuresoftarka@gmail.com
Additional support for Tarka’s sail for CORAL (The Coral Reef Alliance) comes from donations by:
Soylent - Healthy provisioning for the long offshore passages
Sta Lok - Swage-less terminals for portions of Tarka’s rigging, making it an easy DIY job and allowing for easy inspection

i’m 13 and my dream is too sail around the world in a similar boat like you have . now i usually sail with my grandpa on a 18 feet boat
and these vids make me hyped for my future
You have rapidly become one of my favourite you tube channels. Your down to earth, modest and your videos enjoyable.
Thanks Roy! I hope I can keep it that way -- I just share the adventure as it happens :).
Came here to say this. Keep up the good adventur, and I hope you don't leave this particular paradise too soon.
I missed my chance, now I’m too old. So make the most of it and stay safe. I enjoy living it through your posts
I met a guy in my marina yesterday that is 81 and just learned how to sail 2 years ago. He sailed solo to bermuda last year! you can do it
nice video, one of the few things life and age have taught me is that it's the journey that's important, not the destination. If you're enjoying a place then enjoy it for as long as you need to.
Dude I can't believe how beautiful it is. I am actually turning green with envy. Thanks so much for sharing. I only wish somehow I could join you. Stay safe. Enjoy.
Who are the 14 miserable people that downvoted this amazing video?
I like the way you conscientiously hoist the courtesy flag everywhere you go. Fair winds!
This makes me want to sail to the Netherlands.
Thanks for sharing all this friend; the inspiration is past what am able to put in words.
Drew
You are a humble great. Plans are fine but it's actually more about what you discover. Not every stop you make will have as much to offer as this one. It's great to see you connecting in the ways you are here. Highest Blessings
i guess the biggest player in sailing vlogs is sv delos. and you know what you have in comon and what makes your videos equally valuable: you have that narrative voice and follow a clear line of story. of course equipped with a sharp eye for the beauty of nature... but man you can calmly tell a story. thats the stuff. keep going.
Delos was a big inspiration for me, both to get out there and do it already, and also in the style of their videos.
welcome in the ow world, sure you stil enjoy scuba diving, nice video, enjoy
Great video. You prove that one does not need a big boat to sail around. Thank You.
Yep...it's a stay situation!
you are so good.
Well done Captain, congratulations on your awesome win!
In your videos it seams that you just got to the Caribbean a few month ago and your racing to get to Panama, like you need to get there for some reason. You do really good videos. If you slow down and give attention the details of things like diving, boat repairs, things to do on the islands you visit, local foods you find along the way, then in a year or two you'll be making more money than you can spend, just doing videos.
Best wishes, maybe we will meet out thete someday.
Well, I hope you're right! I was definitely rushing all the time before I came to Bonaire. Part of that was because of the hurricane season, and part of that was because I wanted to cross the Pacific this year. The latter was motivated by finances, as I only budgeted for so many years of cruising -- if the money runs out, the adventure ends.
Beautiful underwater video. Thanks for the views.
More about the Coral farm!!! Count me in too! All all adventures. That is until the lake thaws and it is time to sail here in VT!
We have a bit more about it coming up soon!
Great video. Particularly enjoyed the 'swimming in the mangroves section'
Great episode!! Looking forward to the rest of them.
Enjoying great sailing is more important than drawing a big circle around your maps. Pay attention for better opportunities.
Be safe my friend and welcome to the under water world!
Awesome!
Smooth operator...but I think you are going to need a bigger boat...
Yeh go with the flow and enjoy the present :)
Congratulations on picking up the Duchess!
Love your vids i hate when the video ends because its so fun to watch
I love your underwater shots this week.
Beautiful and vivid photography. Truly a pleasure to watch this video.
Ha! An Albin Vega 27 being called a tiny boat!? Try cruising a Flicka 20! I play, love the channel, just subscribed, keep em coming. Hope Pockets and I find ourselves in an Anchorage with you some day. Fair winds and following seas my friend. o7
There are much smaller boats doing bigger things, and I'm a huge fan of the Flicka. Out here though, most people probably consider Tarka pretty tiny, but that's because most cruising boats these days are 40+. My good friends and improtu buddy boat early on were on a 20-foot boat, and that made Tarka feel huge and luxurious :).
stay^^
maybe your best video (by now)
I have a similar boat (23ft) and also have the idea for a longer cruise... but in the mediterranean :D
So the lady friend is finally revealed!
Well done, she seems fun and laid back.
Cheers 🍻
Love your channel dude.. I have a 33' yacht I'm in the process of refitting with the intentions of sailing her around the world.. I love seeing these vids of guys like yourself who have done it!! I'm definitely inspired!! I'm going over to check out the dingy adventures now :)
Very nice new series!! You should definitely stay there, because it's after all about experiences!!
Nice my friend another beautiful video, get that girl take her with you in your passage to Panama
Just as Roy states "You have rapidly become one of my favorite you tube channels" also. I just found you on UA-cam a few days ago. YOU HAVE IT MADE AND I HOPE YOU REALIZE IT!!!!!!! A sailboat to sail globally, youth, adventures and now as seen in this video "A WOMAN THAT APPEARS TO BE AWESOME!!!!!!!" Keep us updated and especially about her :)
Thanks! Despite all the work it can sometimes be, I feel pretty darn lucky!
So very cool! You're doing it all the right way! Enjoy every minute of it.
Beautiful video nice crystal clear waters i enjoyed it very much cheers.
Just lovely.
Cheers
Nice job
Amazing.... Nicely shot
Great video captain 👍👍👍
Yeahh!! Great one
Just watched all your episodes through 17! Great adventure and just the right amount of commentary for my taste.
You've got a new fan who one day plans on doing much of the same! Fair winds and following seas, my friend!
Excelente
Fantastic! Thanks for sharing !🙏👍
You should go to Aruba I worked there for around 5 years beautiful island great video as always my friend
Great video Bryan, so happy for you!! It seems there are good reasons to stay ;)
excellent video!
Great vlog, you are certainly getting the feel for it :-) The clarity of some of the images are outstanding...
Some great shots!!! You are my hero and idol. :D keep on the good work!!!
Enjoy! ⛵🌍🌎🌏⚓🏖️
This was brilliant your videos can tell you loads of useful information to help me assess moving to the Caribbean. I want to live between Panama and Martinique on a 26 foot boat. The only difference is that I intend to do it on a Macgregor 26 which is a trailersailer (no keel!)
Now that takes balls! But then again, with the right weather and right skills, just about any boat can make just about any passage.
Read Robin Graham's classic true story "The Dove", if you haven't already, about a young guy who meets a beautiful woman while sailing the world. You might find it interesting 😀
That was fun!
I will be there soon...
S V Wiskers
Coming soon.
Great video you should check out sailing s/v slipstream this guys prepping himself and boat for a world circle navigation
Great video! Keep it up!
happy I subscribed. really wonderful
Trading scuba for sailing lessons, fan-freakin-tastic. See you never know how things will work out, unless you get out there and try...
seven months??? dude, where are you now? btw, you made me go look at a 27 foot sailboat. It was a bristol 27 and all I can say is that I don't know how you do it. I like small spaces and even so, it's way too small (for me). respect!
It's rarely easy, but it has its advantages when it comes to upkeep and costs!
I hope there's a lag between these clips and reality. Do you post a log that's closer to real time? I just binge watched your first 17 episodes in about 3 evenings, very compelling story.
My blog is much closer to real-time, and contains plenty of spoilers from episodes still to come: www.theadventuresoftarka.com. You can also keep tabs on Instagram: instagram.com/adventuresoftarka/
Great video hope for longere videoes in the future. are your videos up to date or is it months behind
They're a number of months behind -- having that buffer is the only way I can reasonably keep videos uploaded on a regular schedule. Otherwise it would be sporadic and more dependent on where I'm currently sailing and my access to an internet connection.
The Adventures of Tarka anyway i am fan keep up the good work
AWESOME vid as always.
OK please, have a long intimate talk with your new girlfriend, about protection.. eh, no about color management, ask her about magenta filters for the GoPro, she without a doubt knows the kelvin value for water by the meter down. :-)
BTW. awesome drone shots, beautifully composed and shot.
She's got the underwater thing covered well, and has the right filters. Most of this footage was from my GoPro though, and I don't have the right filters.
Amazing drone footage. What are the big purplish areas? Algae for astaxanthin or something?
Jackpot..
Just found your channel today and have watched several of your videos already between spates of dragging anchor up here in the Pacific North West.
I am enjoying what you have been doing and I am looking forward to more videos.
I was curious how the window install is holding up? I need to redo mine here in a couple of months when we go into the boat yard getting her ready to go for this spring, I am seriously considering doing them the way you did with the tape.
The windows have held up great! It's been almost a year now since that project. A few of them leaked slightly early on, but that's because I didn't get enough sealant on the underside, as I wasn't able to see that area at the time, and should have been using a mirror. Those areas have been re-sealed, and all windows have also been sealed from the inside for extra assurance.
No issues with the tape holding them in place though?
Nice video again! When was it shoot? Maybe it is a good idea to put the time of shooting in the video...
January-February of this year. The videos will catch up a little closer to real-time in the coming months, but the idea is to always have several months of buffer room so that I can keep a predictable upload schedule for you guys :).
Fantastic video im think of buying the same boat. Have you any tips on what to look for. Thanks
1finger reactions I'm thinking of an Albin Vega too. There is a website that can help you find one. Just google it. I hear the thing to look out for is deck to hull separation.
Don't overlook the Albin Ballad... I love mine and you even get a door on the head 😂😉
1finger reactions Google “20 small sailboats that can take you anywhere.” I have an Ariel. U-tube Sailing Leia Leia is the same boat.
What’s the smallest sailing boat for world traveling suggested?? I feel like buying one in the future but I think the smaller the better for me, what do you guys suggest???????
Jesus Hernandez Strong, heavy, full keel. Read my comment above.
Is it just me or does the audio cut out at 11:39? Great video as always looking forward to more
Unfortunately, the producer of the song I've used on my outros has reversed his decision about making his music royalty free, and is now hitting videos with copyright claims, which means my video becomes de-monetized, and the owner of the rights to that song gets any ad revenue, instead. UA-cam has no means to re-upload a video in-place, but you can remove infringing audio. So for now, that audio has been removed while I work on a more elegant solution.
Did I spot the SV Creampuff crew at 4|56?
Haha, good eye, you sure did! On an aside -- we've watched your dinghy build videos several times as we were preparing to build our own. But after seeing how long it took you, our lack of availability to a proper workspace and tools, and our limited budget, we decided against it. Still, we were very much in-love with the end-product and the quality of your craftsmanship.
Oh that's really cool to hear that you've checked out the dinghy series!
I hope I didn't give people the wrong idea about the Chameleon.
My build was focused on building a top-notch product without any real constraint on construction time or expense.
I'm sure that a "working" version could be knocked up in half the amount of time and money as mine required.
Still, I certainly understand that it's much easier said than done when you're actively cruising with limited resources.
If our wakes cross you'll have to take the dink for a sail around the anchorage. :)
-B
Great underwater footage. What was the dipole antenna-like structure under the pier that you and the mermaid were sitting on?
We actually don't know... hmm.
Have you ever crossed the ocean on such a small boat?
It's on the near-future to-do list!
Looks like maybe the trip is over! lol
Not a chance!
know a site where you can meet people to embark who have interests in photography and want to embark on a journey with me Thanks
is there another diver at 7:45?
Great video again :) Are you 7 months behind with your videos? is that correct? not a big deal either way though, I am just curious. thanks and best from HKG
Basically! I didn't start making the videos until quite a long time after I started sailing. They'll catch up a little closer in the coming months, but they'll never be real-time, because I need the buffer in order to publish on a predictable schedule.
that monstrosity wasn't a boat, it was a floating hotel, nothing more.
Watch out for the eels they are mean.
Haha, okay! I haven't offered my finger to any of them yet.
That area where you were flying the drone... what were those fields? It was a beautiful scene but it didn't look like a crop???
Terence Alderson those are evaporation pools. They make sea salt on the southern tip of Bonaire. In the drone sequence the small white hills you saw are huge piles of salt.
Brian Whitehouse Very cool! Thanks for letting me know.
I was thinking few weeks ago that you are one of the few who doesn't show bikinis girls in your video's,
Like pure sailing and travel channel, you change it hahaha.
Haha, don't worry, it will always be about the adventure.
Dose your boat have a door to the cabin
Door is probably the wrong word. We have hatch boards that slide into place in heavy weather, or when we need to lock up the boat.
What was the product / commodity that was to be loaded on ships?
If you're referring to the Salt Pier, then the commodity is sea salt.
Cool thanks for reply. Best wishes from John in Winnipeg
So what is the pink-ish looking water on the island
Salt evaporation ponds. They "mine" sea salt there.
Alright enough sailing talk. What's going on with the new girlfriend? You can tell us. We can keep a secret.
I guess you'll just have to wait until the next episode ;).
No pressure... But we're super curious, but no pressure!
I don't understand why the certified divemaster living on your boat couldn't give you lessons.
Bonaire is so progressive...protecting the insidious lionfish while it destroys the environment. Priorities...
is there a reason why you like to be in a shirt?
