I was known as “Prisoner” all throughout Skyrim because I forgot to choose a name or I hit ready too fast or something. Didn’t even realize until I found a “Kill Prisoner” note on an assassin.
The one time that happened to me, was because I thought I could cancel out of writing the name (the xbox text input) to look at my character once more and figure out an actual name. It had been so long thinking of a name, I actually forgot who I was naming. So that was a restart right away.
I love that actually! Imagine telling them that your name is prisioner, the guy that escapes with you did NOT get the sarcasm, and now you're kinda stuck with it because that dude already told everybody and their grandma.

I try walking backwards and sideways when I come across these, to see if I can find a speed that matches. Sometimes walking like a drunkard in zigzags also works, but in any case I want to set fire to every developer who thought doing this horseshit was a good idea.
Thats the sorta thing that always annoys me mostly on games like Red Dead Redemption and yes of course everyone inside of the Elder Scrolls v Skyrim move like a turtle when you're supposed to be following them 😭
Mention "Sara Oakheart" to a LOTRO player and their reaction will tell you how far through the first Epic Volume they have progressed: that's the original "Shadows of Angmar" plot. She shows up in the Introduction Quests for every Race, walking at glacial pace (much slower than any other NPC), and then pops up later to interfere with your work in various (very slow) ways, but saves the full revelation of her depth of evil until much later, at which point you react much like Ellen…
I once saw my wife at her computer with the character generation screen up with her head in her hands. I asked her what was up and she said she had been trying to think of a name for her character for TWO HOURS.
At times like these I would scribble Kanji on little pieces of paper, shuffle them in a hat, and pick out the number of sylables I want for my name. .... How did I end up with GoRoGoRo...?

I love how Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning handles the NPC following a blessing. The NPC will always sprint ahead of you and will actually stop if you stop therefore removing the chance of "IT" getting lost and we to bloody repeat the quest. Such and underappreciated gem I must say.
oh character creation. I got halfway through Dragon's Age: Inquisition before realizing my Inquisitor looked so strange because I'd somehow removed her eyebrows when I'd spent so long creating her and hadn't noticed. ugh
Don't worry it is very difficult to make a character that doesn't look like an alien in Dragon Age Inquisition, I should know as I've made at least 20 not even including imported Hawkes but I've only played with about 7 so that's balanced right? 😆

It's like 50 Shades of bald inside of Dragon Age Inquisition, not that 2 was much better...
THE HAIR OPTIONS ARE SO AWFUL. I always end up using the same one because it’s the mediocre looking one out of the 673832 different types of bald haircuts lol but honestly? During the first cutscene I saw my first freshly made character in, I started laughing like an idiot because he looked T E R R I B L E. My newer one is *way* better thank god

Fun fact about Oblivion: Patrick Stewart loved playing Uriel Septim (even though the character has, like, a dozen lines before he gets ganked), because the developers gave him so much material about the character, far more than he'd gotten for any of his high-profile roles.
I've played it 4 times so far and romanced him and I have no idea how I'm going to manage to romance zevran and morrigan (I'm curious about how that would affect the plot in the long term), Alistair is just too precious 💙💙
The name one made me laugh out loud cause it reminded me of a time I got kicked out of a D&D tournament for "not taking it serious enough" because I made my Wood Elf's surname "Morning Wood" :)

@brandon roberts First time I NG+ DS2 it was a gimmick build, not only that but I had sold off all the cool gear I had before I redid my stats, It was not a smart commitment.
With the example used: Zevran. If your relationship with him is high enough he won't betray you and he will assist you in killing the Crows! Good example though.

@@elginscodex you can recruit him and never use him because you prefer the early game gang and then his relationship is still as neutral when you're at denirum. then bang x'D though i also think if you make certain dialogue choices when you meet talisin, he'll be less or more likely to betray you.
I always spare him but never build enough approval on purpose. He did try to kill me, why should I be friends with him? He’s an asset to be used against the Blight and nothing else.
I'm dependent on him if I'm not a Rogue to get the locks open after Leliana suffers her obligatory death. She's a good character and all, but Kolgrim is the second greatest character in all of Dragon Age (after Anders, natch, and third is Branka; silly Oghren should have fought harder for her) so, those Ashes of Andraste must get despoiled and hardening Leliana isn't really worth the time, most playthroughs.
I've actually had Andy's nose dilemma in real life. This one time I was zoning out in class, but when I suddenly came to, human faces didn't make sense to me anymore, and noses seemed like a grotesquely weird feature on it. Took me a solid 30 seconds to regain sanity
Sound can actually do the same thing in reverse - if you listen to a sound clip over an over again,no matter what it is, you'll eventually start hearing it as music. Humans get weird when we over-focus on something.
Huh, Zevran can betray you? I've played the game at least 3 times and never had that happen...I do love Zevran though so I was always friends (or more) with him
I didn’t have high enough approval on one of my playthroughs and so went back to my only save which was in Denerim five minutes earlier. Ended up spamming Zev with alcohol from the taverns because it counts as a gift until I got his approval high enough 😂
My heaviest sin in all rpgs is with the skill trees... after 5-10 hours playing i start to think: maybe this wasn't the best class, maybe i shouldn't have take that skill, this power don't do as much as i thought... maybe i should start 3 or 4 times the same game doing something slightly different every time and *Never Ended It!!!* It happened so many times...
That was me for a while as well. Then I remembered I can save scum and try both. But to be honest, I don't really care for either. I like the, "Fuck both your factions," faction. :)
@@Emerald__Ace I just started that character, after so many years of playing a mage/necromancer (445h of playing a mage in Daedric armor, with a life stealing sword and a thall vampire as a support), and after 11h i realised i do not want to spend another 400+h to basicly get back to the same point i was at :)
@@Emerald__Ace At some points, yes. But I branched out to also do 1H + shield. Double 1H is just harder to stay alive with, and you can put good enchants on shields.
My first character was a 'fuck you both' and then it comes to the civil war round table thing where you decide who gets what and I was like "Well you randomly get this and you randomly get this...why the fuck you're asking the opinion of a professional tomb robber and dragon stabber on the matter of politics I don't bloody know...but there..now shut up and help me stab this really big dragon..."

Dob and Corazon are the only ones with valid complaints. Can't kick rats if you're too tired to lift your feet. And you can't ruin your boots even further with rat guts when they're already dirty! Those boots were really expensive, he'd have to spend all the quest reward on a new pair, y'know? :D
Mine would be getting to know your companions and then basing your character's entire personality and morals around making your favorite companion your best friend and or romantic partner.
I said it on the last video, but I'll say it again here: I think you're forgetting a very important aspect of being a good RPG player: Speeding through tutorials you think you don't need, getting your buttocks handed to you on a silver platter that was made by smelting your gear and loot off your still warm corpse, then faffing around for 20+ hours in the prologue, only to try and actually play the story and get you butt handed to you again, before finally giving up and looking for those tutorials again in the story menu. Occasionally, I'll skip a tutorial because I think it'll be easy, only to encounter some scaly bear looking creature that murders me instantly. So I have to go searching for the dodge tutorial, only to realise that it's not helping me. Because it doesn't matter if you're mashing the wrong (or right) button, if you're really bad at video games, nothing will save you.
Im always too excited to get on with the game/story that i quickly click through the tutorial and say ill figure it out later, like how hard could it be? Then spend the whole time struggling to understand why im leveling up so slow, or my abilities suck
Do. I put it off for months, then was barely past the epilogue before I wished I'd played it sooner. I didn't play the previous games until after Witcher 3, but they give you enough detail to get what'a happening, and enough character beats for you to become attached to the main cast. It really did earn it's many awards and critical acclaim. It's a fantastic game.
I heartily recommend it! I just finished my fifth playthrough last week. I suggest getting the complete edition of the game because, in my opinion, the DLC stories are even better than the main campaign. Also, don't let yourself become too overwhelmed! The first time I played it I only got about 4 hours into it before I decided I hated it and shelved it. I didn't pick it up again for another year, but when I did I was hooked! Favorite game of this gen so far!
"Um, can you... forgive me?" The very concept of Luke not forgiving Ellen for ANY CRIME is somewhere between laughable and tragic. Also, who wouldn't forgive that face?
I'm pretty sure, regarding the walking speed one, that at least a few RPGs feature an option to change your default from running to walking, thus negating the issue, for the most part. The real frustration, as MrDeflador notes, is charecters that have their default speed in between your walking and running speed. THAT is the real evil. Love the vid, as always!
One of the things that I always go through in an RPG is (when applicable), saying I'm gonna just explore the map and pick up a few side quests to really understand the lore and world around me, aaaaaaand the story line is complete. Or, when applicable, the complete opposite happens. I'm trying to do a main quest and SQUIRREL.... I end up wandering for hours and then I say to myself, "Wait, what was I supposed to do again? Something about dragons?"
Me the first time I'm in a Character Creator: "Ok, lets see what I can do. Shouldn't take too long" An hour later: "Eyes still don't look right. Goodness, that nose is too big." *Realizes I've spent more time in character creator then playing the actual game* "Oh god,what am I doing" Basically, Character creator: Way more time consuming then any quest in the actual game. Also, anyone else worried about Andy's sudden obsession with Mads Mikkelsen and Keanu Reeves?

Got so fed up of the "That name isn't available" taunt in WoW that my imagination fully capsized and I ended up with a Tauren hunter called cupboard.. needless to say all my characters on one server were furniture related
first off, Angry Ellen is the funniest thing I have seen today. and secondly, what about saving before the big evil bad guy, or before your final decision of no turning back and then proceeding to collect, find, and finish other parts of the game that you might have missed. like in Legend of Dragoon, Fallout 3 (before Broken Steel DLC), Borderlands (all), tomb raider ( newer ones, though not an RPG but still), Hollow Knight, Fable, Batman (arkham series, again not rpg but still), Infinite undiscovery, etc.
In West of Loathing, the 2D comedic RPG, it's basically a requirement to give your character the silliest name you can come up with. Bonus points if it's really fun to say. Reubin Blurblestien is by far the best sheriff in the west.
I just named him after my Kingdom of Loathing character: Bonaparte Bardithion the IV. You may notice I've named a few other things after the accordian thief.

I used to have odd themes. Way back, I used proper and implied STDs for names. I only have Brnswenipee left. My brother used medications maining Celexa, so to speak.
I’ve been using the same one since games required you to input a name (a very long time). Amazingly I’ve only ever had to alter it slightly if I already saved that name before and forgot the password. It’s not a real word, just a misunderstanding of a character’s name from my favorite cartoon fantasy movie from when I was little. It sounds better then the character’s actual name.
When i cannot think of a cool sounding name i just look at the last game i've played, pick names of two NPC from it that sounds good and mash them together to make a new one. It works perfectly most of the time :P

Some submicroscopic particles such as neutrinos change "flavor" oscillating between different types. Ellen just finally flipped from super giggly "flavor" to dark angry "flavor". It's only taken this long, because she's slightly larger than submicroscopic. ;)

"Oh I'll give Gunlance a go, I've got all the stuff for a good build..." *30 minutes later* Nah.. *switches back to Hammer*
That mention of trying to figure who'll betray you is spot on. I tend to spend most games thinking, "okay, who's the traitor? Is it this one? It's this one. Or it could be this other character? Nah, too obvious. Oooh, I bet it's the NICE, HELPFUL one! I'm onto you!"
2. Character appearance: At least some games like FO4 did one thing almost right in that you could update your character's appearance at the end of the tutorial dungeon, finally having seen your character at proper game distance and lighting. Though games like Saints Row do even better by letting you change your appearance any time. Though why games don't let you create your character with an option to see them in actual gameplay zoom levels and lighting is beyond me. Seems like a no-brainer.
I tend to spend anywhere from 10 to 30 minutes making a character. That includes the name. Most of that is me just contemplating how much fun it would be to start the game already. If presets look good. I tweak them to my taste. I don't bother with making every detail perfect. The face is fine so long as it doesn't look like it has: A.) Bowl Movement Issues, B) Extreme Hatred for Humanity, or C.) Like its Face just got shoved into a blender. I also have a list of names I like to use. Should I use a name I don't already use then it might actually take me the thirty minutes. Maybe.

3. A Rose By Any Other Name: This is why it's important to have a completely ridiculous name on standby. I used to use "Bob" for male characters, for example. Until MMOs ruined that. So then I "spiced it up" a bit by making Bob pseudo-Japanese ... ish, changing my default male name to Bobshito. Works like a charm. No one sees that coming. LOL Bob, savior of many worlds. Hey, he was even a planet in a movie once! (Thanks Titan AE! You literally read my mind!)
I applaud any who can find an original username/character name that isn't taken in an MMORPG without swapping 'i's with 'y's or adding an extra silent 'h' or 'e'. Even just misspelled words or gamer code names. Also fit the character limit without shortening words to syllables and numbers.
I was half expecting Ellen to enter her characters name as Pippin only to have it denied as well followed by her saying “Alright, they’re all taken then”

I was known as “Prisoner” all throughout Skyrim because I forgot to choose a name or I hit ready too fast or something. Didn’t even realize until I found a “Kill Prisoner” note on an assassin.
The one time that happened to me, was because I thought I could cancel out of writing the name (the xbox text input) to look at my character once more and figure out an actual name. It had been so long thinking of a name, I actually forgot who I was naming.
So that was a restart right away.

*than But at least that one joke quest in World Of Warcraft exists. The famous dwarf starts walking glacially slowly, "lampshades" saying he's only joking, then runs off.
I try walking backwards and sideways when I come across these, to see if I can find a speed that matches. Sometimes walking like a drunkard in zigzags also works, but in any case I want to set fire to every developer who thought doing this horseshit was a good idea.
Thats the sorta thing that always annoys me mostly on games like Red Dead Redemption and yes of course everyone inside of the Elder Scrolls v Skyrim move like a turtle when you're supposed to be following them 😭
That's why I always have a special place for games that sync walking speeds when walking with an npc. e.g. Yakuza series
Mention "Sara Oakheart" to a LOTRO player and their reaction will tell you how far through the first Epic Volume they have progressed: that's the original "Shadows of Angmar" plot.
She shows up in the Introduction Quests for every Race, walking at glacial pace (much slower than any other NPC), and then pops up later to interfere with your work in various (very slow) ways, but saves the full revelation of her depth of evil until much later, at which point you react much like Ellen…

I love how Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning handles the NPC following a blessing. The NPC will always sprint ahead of you and will actually stop if you stop therefore removing the chance of "IT" getting lost and we to bloody repeat the quest. Such and underappreciated gem I must say.

oh character creation. I got halfway through Dragon's Age: Inquisition before realizing my Inquisitor looked so strange because I'd somehow removed her eyebrows when I'd spent so long creating her and hadn't noticed. ugh
Don't worry it is very difficult to make a character that doesn't look like an alien in Dragon Age Inquisition, I should know as I've made at least 20 not even including imported Hawkes but I've only played with about 7 so that's balanced right? 😆

Fun fact about Oblivion: Patrick Stewart loved playing Uriel Septim (even though the character has, like, a dozen lines before he gets ganked), because the developers gave him so much material about the character, far more than he'd gotten for any of his high-profile roles.

@@elginscodex you can recruit him and never use him because you prefer the early game gang and then his relationship is still as neutral when you're at denirum. then bang x'D though i also think if you make certain dialogue choices when you meet talisin, he'll be less or more likely to betray you.

I always spare him but never build enough approval on purpose. He did try to kill me, why should I be friends with him? He’s an asset to be used against the Blight and nothing else.
I'm dependent on him if I'm not a Rogue to get the locks open after Leliana suffers her obligatory death. She's a good character and all, but Kolgrim is the second greatest character in all of Dragon Age (after Anders, natch, and third is Branka; silly Oghren should have fought harder for her) so, those Ashes of Andraste must get despoiled and hardening Leliana isn't really worth the time, most playthroughs.
I've actually had Andy's nose dilemma in real life. This one time I was zoning out in class, but when I suddenly came to, human faces didn't make sense to me anymore, and noses seemed like a grotesquely weird feature on it. Took me a solid 30 seconds to regain sanity

Sound can actually do the same thing in reverse - if you listen to a sound clip over an over again,no matter what it is, you'll eventually start hearing it as music. Humans get weird when we over-focus on something.

I didn’t have high enough approval on one of my playthroughs and so went back to my only save which was in Denerim five minutes earlier. Ended up spamming Zev with alcohol from the taverns because it counts as a gift until I got his approval high enough 😂

@@Emerald__Ace I just started that character, after so many years of playing a mage/necromancer (445h of playing a mage in Daedric armor, with a life stealing sword and a thall vampire as a support), and after 11h i realised i do not want to spend another 400+h to basicly get back to the same point i was at :)
@@Emerald__Ace At some points, yes. But I branched out to also do 1H + shield. Double 1H is just harder to stay alive with, and you can put good enchants on shields.
My first character was a 'fuck you both' and then it comes to the civil war round table thing where you decide who gets what and I was like "Well you randomly get this and you randomly get this...why the fuck you're asking the opinion of a professional tomb robber and dragon stabber on the matter of politics I don't bloody know...but there..now shut up and help me stab this really big dragon..."

I think you're forgetting a very important aspect of being a good RPG player: Speeding through tutorials you think you don't need, getting your buttocks handed to you on a silver platter that was made by smelting your gear and loot off your still warm corpse, then faffing around for 20+ hours in the prologue, only to try and actually play the story and get you butt handed to you again, before finally giving up and looking for those tutorials again in the story menu.
Occasionally, I'll skip a tutorial because I think it'll be easy, only to encounter some scaly bear looking creature that murders me instantly. So I have to go searching for the dodge tutorial, only to realise that it's not helping me. Because it doesn't matter if you're mashing the wrong (or right) button, if you're really bad at video games, nothing will save you.
That's why, when I first play a game I pay attention to the tutorials. At the moment I'm coming to grips with FF14's elaborate controls.
Im always too excited to get on with the game/story that i quickly click through the tutorial and say ill figure it out later, like how hard could it be? Then spend the whole time struggling to understand why im leveling up so slow, or my abilities suck

Do. I put it off for months, then was barely past the epilogue before I wished I'd played it sooner.
I didn't play the previous games until after Witcher 3, but they give you enough detail to get what'a happening, and enough character beats for you to become attached to the main cast.
It really did earn it's many awards and critical acclaim. It's a fantastic game.
I bought the game on a whim when it was on sale on the PlayStation store. Little did I know I’d spend 200ish hours plays such a great game!
I heartily recommend it! I just finished my fifth playthrough last week. I suggest getting the complete edition of the game because, in my opinion, the DLC stories are even better than the main campaign. Also, don't let yourself become too overwhelmed! The first time I played it I only got about 4 hours into it before I decided I hated it and shelved it. I didn't pick it up again for another year, but when I did I was hooked! Favorite game of this gen so far!

I'm pretty sure, regarding the walking speed one, that at least a few RPGs feature an option to change your default from running to walking, thus negating the issue, for the most part.
The real frustration, as MrDeflador notes, is charecters that have their default speed in between your walking and running speed. THAT is the real evil.

I've never had an existential crisis before but "flesh snorkel" might very well be my first....
One of the things that I always go through in an RPG is (when applicable), saying I'm gonna just explore the map and pick up a few side quests to really understand the lore and world around me, aaaaaaand the story line is complete. Or, when applicable, the complete opposite happens. I'm trying to do a main quest and SQUIRREL.... I end up wandering for hours and then I say to myself, "Wait, what was I supposed to do again? Something about dragons?"
Me the first time I'm in a Character Creator: "Ok, lets see what I can do. Shouldn't take too long"
An hour later: "Eyes still don't look right. Goodness, that nose is too big." *Realizes I've spent more time in character creator then playing the actual game* "Oh god,what am I doing"
Basically, Character creator: Way more time consuming then any quest in the actual game.
Also, anyone else worried about Andy's sudden obsession with Mads Mikkelsen and Keanu Reeves?
Also when you can redo character creation by editing the character later....

and secondly, what about saving before the big evil bad guy, or before your final decision of no turning back and then proceeding to collect, find, and finish other parts of the game that you might have missed. like in Legend of Dragoon, Fallout 3 (before Broken Steel DLC), Borderlands (all), tomb raider ( newer ones, though not an RPG but still), Hollow Knight, Fable, Batman (arkham series, again not rpg but still), Infinite undiscovery, etc.

In West of Loathing, the 2D comedic RPG, it's basically a requirement to give your character the silliest name you can come up with. Bonus points if it's really fun to say. Reubin Blurblestien is by far the best sheriff in the west.

I’ve been using the same one since games required you to input a name (a very long time). Amazingly I’ve only ever had to alter it slightly if I already saved that name before and forgot the password.
It’s not a real word, just a misunderstanding of a character’s name from my favorite cartoon fantasy movie from when I was little. It sounds better then the character’s actual name.
When i cannot think of a cool sounding name i just look at the last game i've played, pick names of two NPC from it that sounds good and mash them together to make a new one. It works perfectly most of the time :P

Some submicroscopic particles such as neutrinos change "flavor" oscillating between different types. Ellen just finally flipped from super giggly "flavor" to dark angry "flavor". It's only taken this long, because she's slightly larger than submicroscopic. ;)

That mention of trying to figure who'll betray you is spot on. I tend to spend most games thinking, "okay, who's the traitor? Is it this one? It's this one. Or it could be this other character? Nah, too obvious. Oooh, I bet it's the NICE, HELPFUL one! I'm onto you!"

2. Character appearance: At least some games like FO4 did one thing almost right in that you could update your character's appearance at the end of the tutorial dungeon, finally having seen your character at proper game distance and lighting. Though games like Saints Row do even better by letting you change your appearance any time. Though why games don't let you create your character with an option to see them in actual gameplay zoom levels and lighting is beyond me. Seems like a no-brainer.
I tend to spend anywhere from 10 to 30 minutes making a character. That includes the name. Most of that is me just contemplating how much fun it would be to start the game already. If presets look good. I tweak them to my taste. I don't bother with making every detail perfect. The face is fine so long as it doesn't look like it has: A.) Bowl Movement Issues, B) Extreme Hatred for Humanity, or C.) Like its Face just got shoved into a blender.
I also have a list of names I like to use. Should I use a name I don't already use then it might actually take me the thirty minutes. Maybe.

3. A Rose By Any Other Name: This is why it's important to have a completely ridiculous name on standby. I used to use "Bob" for male characters, for example. Until MMOs ruined that. So then I "spiced it up" a bit by making Bob pseudo-Japanese ... ish, changing my default male name to Bobshito. Works like a charm. No one sees that coming. LOL Bob, savior of many worlds. Hey, he was even a planet in a movie once! (Thanks Titan AE! You literally read my mind!)

I applaud any who can find an original username/character name that isn't taken in an MMORPG without swapping 'i's with 'y's or adding an extra silent 'h' or 'e'. Even just misspelled words or gamer code names. Also fit the character limit without shortening words to syllables and numbers.
