  • Today, we test pattern the Herter's TSS loads from a Mossberg 500 .410 Turkey at 40 yards with the stock XF choke as well as a Winchester full choke. These were definitely some interesting results to say the least, so stick around and find out what kind of performance we can get!
    You can send stuff to the channel! (please no handloaded or reloaded ammo, factory ammo is fine *DO NOT SEND AMMO VIA USPS! USE UPS OR FEDEX ONLY*)

    They shoot great in my 20 gauge. Almost the identical pattern I get from Apex. I like the full in this video.

      They are definitely sleepers for what they are. That full choke shoots surprisingly well. I want to do some more testing with it to really see what it can do

    When I bought apex ninja last year it was $60 for a box of 10…. It patterned awesome in my Stevens…. I liked the Winchester choke in your gun over the factory choke, much more even pattern with less voids.

    • @matttyreeoutdoors
      @matttyreeoutdoors  Рік тому

      The Apex loads are definitely on the list for shells I want to test out since I know they typically pattern well. I was surprised at what that winchester full choke did. Definitely a more open core, but less voids like you said

    I sure do like my Winchester LB XR shells 12 ga. and no reason to spend the big bucks on Tungsten. But I sure am impressed what they are doing for the .410.

    • @matttyreeoutdoors
      @matttyreeoutdoors  Рік тому

      Yeah I like them too. I have a video out patterning the 12 gauge longbeard 6s already and I have filmed a couple other longbeard tests that I'm gonna be posting soon. The problem with lead loads in a 410 is that you need the larger shot size to retain energy, but the pellet count and pattern suffers drastically, which is where the tungsten stuff comes in

    • @burkejones8277
      @burkejones8277 Рік тому

      I agree 100%. The 3.5 inch LB XR #5 Magnums (1050 fps) is hard to beat out of my 12 gauge. But I set up a 20 for next season; probably use both along the way.

      Yep, same shell I use out of a Winchester SX3 with a Rob Roberts .655 choke.

    I have a REM 20 and a Winchester 20. Shoot TSS no 9 in both. I use the factory Full in both guns and the pattern is great in both guns. I think the patterns are more uniform when you don't use xtra tight chokes.

    • @matttyreeoutdoors
      @matttyreeoutdoors  Рік тому

      Yeah I've seen the larger shot like 8s and 9s perform a little better through more open chokes while the smaller shot like 9.5s and 10s seem to like a little more constriction. It's something that I plan to test once I get my hands on some more loads and chokes

      EXACTLY I used to use a blackout turkey choke and the damn pattern was SUPER tight and clumpy and had a ton of fliers. I measured 300 pellets in a 10 inch circle at 40 yards. Now I use the factory full at of my Mossberg 20 gauge and it is a beautiful uniform pattern with a lot of leeway and I get about 200 pellets in a ten inch circle at 40.

    • @matttyreeoutdoors
      @matttyreeoutdoors  Рік тому

      @Mitchell Dexter yeah, I've seen similar things. I've got a Mossberg 835 ultimag that I run the factory full choke for turkey hunting. I have never even tried a dedicated turkey choke with it because the full just patterns nice and even out to 40 with no issues. It's another gun that I want to film some tests with at some point as well

    Federal sucks with the flight control wad,I personally think the lower weight shells shoot better then the higher weight ones do,when you start shoving more pellets down a tite choke you will get a lot of flyers less pellets tighter patteren,I shoot a 7/8oz hand load with a great patteren at 40,tried a 15/16oz and it was spread way out there

    • @matttyreeoutdoors
      @matttyreeoutdoors  Рік тому

      You definitely need to find the balance that your setup likes. Too tight of a choke with a large payload can definitely blow open

    My factory choke likes the Wilson customs 10’s and apex. Indian creek choke in .390 liked 9’s better. Same gun.

    • @matttyreeoutdoors
      @matttyreeoutdoors  Рік тому

      Yeah that makes sense. The 10s typically like a little more constriction like the factory choke, but the 9s seem to do better with slightly less constriction

      The Verdict stuff is definitely on the list of things I want to test out. The problem is when you order ammo online, I have to pay most places almost 20 bucks to ship it to me. So at that point, the ammo costs quite a bit more per shell then what the price appears to be initially
