Supercharged engine is very punchy and great for blasting from corner to corner and loves to be pushed hard. Just lacks the power to really move that well at high speeds on the freeway.
318is and 318ti are actually typical blitzkrieg cars in nurburgring because the M42 engine can be set to 180hp and the car lighted to 1100kg and they are very very fast in corners... that 7500rpm downshift is nothing for that engine, actually the chip to apply the agressive cam timing (yes this engine had adjustable timing) the chip make it cuttoff at 7500 or even 8000rpm.
Like an owner of an e36 318is I'm with you Misha. Perfect base which with some mods is the perfect car for have fun, learn and push it to the limit on track!
@@dannyh6511 What country? Here in Australia you'd be milked dry for at least 15k for such a conversion and that's if you do all the work yourself. You need to swap over the drive-train components such as the driveshaft, differential and transmission, you need to get better suspension coil-overs (not just for better handling but to handle the weight of the heavier engine), you need shocks and bushings, you need better brakes on all wheels, you need better tires, a performance radiator, custom engine mounts, custom engine harness and I could go on and on..
@@TimSlee1 you don't 'need' any of that. There are tonnes of swapped compacts here in the UK and people run them with standard gearboxes and diffs(although not advisable) without issue. There was a well done m52b28 swapped compact up for sale here for 3.5k not long ago. You barely need 'custom' anything to do the swap, it's simpler than you think.
It was a way of getting into the hatchback sector. The E36 was done on the cheap using existing parts. The E46 compact was a stand alone vehicle plus it had the very good 325ti.

The car is still in good condition from what I see. I still own a BMW 318i (E36) Cabrio "Sylt Special Edition" with BBS Benetton Formula 1 wheels and H&R suspension. These cars have bullet proof engines (M42) and have very simple front/rear axle setup thats super easy and cheap to maintain eith few parts, and not a lot of electronics.
with that kind of "slow" cars, seems like you are focusing on the perfect line more than when you are divng faster ones, as if its being kind of a chill training session for you

Well it's not rare or anything. It's just the E36 is a near perfect project car platform. I've owned an E36 sedan and my current E36 is a compact (Ti) like the one in the video. The lightness and straight-forward mechanics of it make it a joy to drive and is relatively easy and cheap to maintain. Simple electronics and lots of engine swap options that "just fit" with minimal effort (M54B30 is going in mine soon). @@KEV19019
Misha is a curious guy and he will probably drive anything that is allowed to drive on the Nordschleife and hasn't been covered on his channel already I'd say you have good chances but if you really want to be sure buy yourself cup2s and maybe upgrade the front brakes :D

The engine is built for that: It has many tweaks that makes it almost indestructible. I bought one with 275.000km and used it the hard way for another 50.000km.

Had an E36 316i Compact in the family from new in 97, in 2005/2006 we dropped an M52B28 in there with an M50 manifold, fun car to drive

I don't know man... Changing the rubber bushings on the rear strut mount was a real pain the butt.

Some lower powered engines are designed without them. In stock form, I bet this car would struggle to accelerate to those RPMs.
it probably has a custom chip. i used to have on mine 318is a chip from coneus, which revved to 7000
I only ever did 6 laps on the ring and it was with E36 318is coupe. Its a really nice car when you do some suspension and tire mods.

Only the badge is different, it's the same M42/M44 (pre fl/fl) across all 318is/ti. Only the 318i US spec had the m42 from what I know.
The compact can also be 316i. Despite the name it's still a 1.8l engine.
