Asa previous owner of a 2018 Tiguan SEL and present owner of a 2022 Arteon, I absolutely love the redesign of the Tiguan. As they say different taste for different folks.
I’m not a designer.. just a dude who likes cool cars… to my layman eyes, the newer model is much better looking… maybe I have poorer taste, but to me the new is a decent improvement to the old
@@TheMemeHandler43 right? They didnt even bother to house the gauge cluster. Despite hard plastic on hard plastic wrapped in hard plastic, the previous gen interior looked more premium.
The new one is beyond better than the old one which has always been a proportional nightmare with it’s short snout and long body. The only thing that truly bothers me about the new one is the lower facia design. I feel like some more classy choices could be made with the rear tail light graphics but I could live with it. The interior, I’m not a fan of the little digital pattern glowing parts in the dash and doors. It looks pretty gimmicky. Everything else is quite handsome.
The second row is incredibly comfortable for me (5'11"). The reason is that the front seats are raised so much that I can fully stretch out my legs under them.
This is exactly what I’ve been thinking all along. The old Tiguan, especially the R version in all black, looked fantastic-almost a rival to the BMW X5. VW did something similar with the Passat, too; the previous versions were much more attractive than the latest models. It feels like VW is losing its way, trying too hard but missing what people really want. Just focus on designing beautiful, high-quality cars, and they’ll sell. Instead, the new ID lineup looks awkward, with technology lagging behind. No wonder they’re having to shut down production facilities in Germany. Well done, VW-keep pushing customers away with these missteps.
That 201hp for this Power/Weight Ratio is anemic. As always, excessive emissions are holding it back. Most people park their cars at work for eight hours. Meanwhile, diesel delivery trucks running around town NON-STOP are EXEMPT from emissions regulations. Make it make sense.
The interior is very elegant and refined for its price segment, but the exterior design is overly aggressive. The gigantic air vent trend makes zero sense for what is a family-oriented SUV. It’s as if the vents are eating the rest of the front facade. The back is okay, I don’t mind the taillights.
I read a story somewhere that MB designers used to prep two clay mock-ups for their execs. One was a more futuristic model, 2 generations down the line - revealed first to show the execs where the design logic was going, and probably to soften up the old goats. And they then revealed the next gen model that needed sign-off. It was then easier to visualize the link from past to future, and also to introduce step-change designs. I think this new design has lost a lot of the evolutionary Tiguan design elements that were classic VW. Maybe it's setting the new brand ID for the rest of the range to follow, but sadly, it's lost a lot a balance and proportion in the design.
"idc if it makes me old school or not adjusting to trends, thats why i have this Yt channel" instant like PS: its crazy that there is a dial for the ambient light but no dials for important things like AC or volume
Volkswagen was always slightly more boxy, more purposeful, and with a more upscale and driver-oriented feeling. This one, like so many others, is kind of a confused mess... if you hid the VW badge it could be really anything from China or Korea, no "Volkswagen-ness" at all anymore.
I agree with everything you said. Vulgar and grotesque are two adjectives that describe well not just the Tiguan but many new cars. I would argue that the new interior is incredibly boring to look at; it’s just a horizontal line and a screen. I know I’m stuck in the past as well when it comes to car design, but I don’t think that’s necessarily a bad thing.
They didn‘t drop weight. They are just smaller for the US market. You guys usually got the Tiguan Allspace as the normal Tiguan. Which is by far longer and bigger than the normal EU Tiguan. The 7 seater will be the Tayron.
To those that say that capacitive panels and baking too many things into the screen are better because it’s more modern, those trends deserve reception similar to reception of some other trends like CVTs and overworking small engines by slapping turbos.
I think these companies are hiring designers who want to follow the hottest trends they learned in school or were inspired by from previous design experience, rather than sticking to their roots.
It’s sad to see the identity crisis Volkswagen has been going through. The company that had a clear design ethos of having no unnecessary lines has now become practically indistinguishable from Toyota. Even their ID Buzz-clearly meant to fill the Beetle’s role as their attention-grabbing statement-making nod to their automotive heritage-has unnecessary and dishonest design details like the pointless fake vents near the back. People are still driving the old Bus today, 60 years later. Can you picture people driving the new ID Buzz in 60 years? With its plastic interior and flimsy fold down tables that won’t last a week around a family with young kids?
First, keep in mind that this is the R-Line design. VW also builds two lower models that have different front and rear-ends. The rear-end simply balances the front. Second, all carmakers are redefining their identity due to electrification. So it true, they are in flux. Keep in mind that what well so well for them before during the ICE age, won't necessarily work for an EV. Remember, EV are government mandates, so its less the carmaker, and more Big Brother forces these changes upon all of us. Anyway, its not Korean, but Chinese. The Tiguan (formally Tayron) was designed for the Chinese market. BTW, if you feel VW has a gaping maw, what do you think of Lexus or Genesis, or Infinity? Three luxury models with huge grills. Not to mention the grill on its biggest competitor, the RAV4.
The original 2016 mk2 Tiguan in r-line trim with rectangular headlights is peak Tiguan design imo It looked like a bigger, more rugged and more aggressive Golf GTI
It looks too bottom heavy. I think the best looking was the pre restyling version. The light bar of the restyling is a bit too gaudy for me. The original Gen 2 Tiguan was the most elegant
New fascia is missing some accents and just needs a few light clusters to take away from large gaping mouth/intake. 19inch in a higher profile rubber for comfort.
@krane15 usa you only got the b-cyle 184hp/228tq engine you could spend near $50k on a car with 184 hp. no hybrid or Tiguan R here, same thing with this one 201 is all you get
I agree with you 100%. They took that from Audi, who have also very little sheet metal in their front views. But what I also find unfortunate is that the rim designs on many new vehicles are getting worse and worse. Angular, edgy, awkward, endlessly convoluted, only sporty sporty sporty. In my eyes, no longer beautiful, no longer noble.
Looking at this new Tiguan, my eyes are scanning all over the place searching for some resolution or balance, but it isn't there. Puffy. Undulating lines. Odd choices. Encore GX lines coming to mind with the rear door and D-pillar relationship. Grrrrr.
I feel like the VW designer saw what Porsches did with 911 stretching it stretching the front to make cayenne and done the same by the stretching the golf
I do not know what it is with the new Volkswagen models, whether it is the new tiguan, the tayron, golf or passat. They replace everything with massive blacked out plastic...

Fully agree. Previous Tiguan was a masterpiece of vw design and SUV design in general. Pure and simple, yet still attractive. It probably explains why the sales trend at Skoda and Cupra is more positive compared to VW.
the "regular" version is actually not that bad (compared to the Rline). it doesn't have that big mouth in the front, nor the extra details at the back. In Greece that would be the Life or More versions.
Hi, i just wanted to correct, that without the R-Line, you will have a very different front with a less chubby face below the headlights and more elegance.
Bembli is really starting to show his age. He does a lot of complaining but won't sketch and redesign the car like he used to. That's what got me interested in his channel in the first place. oh good lord, the back is even barely tolerable, the front is just sad. The designers over at VW need to get a pay cut for that
Literally almost no diversity on the front and rear, almost the same from across the models
I grant your wish. VW in Germany is in such a bad way everyone is taking a big pay cut plus factory closures.
Vw designers have lost their talent.
Removing that black section in the rear bumper would make that rear end really nice.
It worked on the Golf because it wasn't as huge
Looks much more Porsche like

I actually like the new design, more modern and premium. The old one is good looking too, handsome and musclier. Both are good in my opinion.
I really like the rear end on the new model and the interior is much better
The "grille" is a bit bigger than it really needs to be but otherwise I think it's nice looking. Interior is much improved too.
