For me it was Lil Pump who got me into post-rock. After listening to his music I started to hate lyrics and decided to only listen to instrumental music
On GY!BE, if you want to feel like you’re watching the world slowly die and you can’t do anything to help it, listen to “F# A# Infinity”. One of the darkest albums I’ve ever heard.
Absolutely, I prefer that one over Skinny Fists slightly. If you haven't checked out Earth's "The Bees Made Honey In The Lion's Skull", I suggest you do so. Very similar apocalyptic vibe, but with less crescendos and more of a feeling of walking through the desert alone.
Not an album but GY!BE’s Slow Riot For New Zero Kanada EP is an essential listen. It got me into post-rock and GY!BE as a whole. Fantastic release, would definitely give it to someone new to the genre.
While I certainly, certainly, recommend Soundtracks for the Blind by Swans as an essential listen. I would listen to it while being familiar with the genre or with Swans' work. It's a massive, monstrous, challenging piece of music of all sorts of variety within it. It's likely the most exhausting album that I have ever listened to, but it's an album to behold

If some people are new to this genre I highly recommend All is violent, all is Bright - God is an Astronaut ; Departure song - We lost the sea ; and Every country's sun - Mogwai. Those are my favorites !
If it was 5 ESSENTIAL Post-Rock Albums, Lift your Skinny Fists would definitely be on the list. But to get you into Post-Rock, I would go with the Slow Riot for New Zero Kanada EP.

Hope you will like these as well. Also, do check out Jeanette Leech's book "Fearless" which was published in 2017.

The last entries on these lists always end up being my favourite. Rounds by Four Tet, The Black Saint and the Sinner Lady by Mingus, and now Ágætis Byrjun. Thanks for all your help.
Well I just listened to Earth Is Not A Cold Dead Place, and I have to say I'm truly blown away by it. A lot of reviews were shitting on it and saying it's bland and overly sentimental, but I didn't get that vibe at all. Thought the guitar work was mesmerising
I kind of like "Those Who Tell The Truth Shall Die..." from them better. A bit of a heavier sound. "How Strange, Innocence" is good too. Shorter songs, not exactly poppy but a more straightforward expression of musical ideas. I think that's why some people felt The Earth Is Not A Cold Dead Place was bland when it followed up these albums.
My list: Maybeshewill: I Was Here for a Moment and Now I'm Gone Talk Talk: Laughing Stock This Will Destroy You: Young Mountain And So I Watch You From Afar: All Hail Bright Futures Caspian: Waking Season I know this isn't that challenging (outside of Talk Talk) but I think these are good albums to give people an idea of what the genre can do before branching out to bands like Slint and GS!YBE
Maybeshewill are excellent. Their use of sampled movie quotes (in lieu of a lead vocalist) is inspired. Their track "Not for want of trying" is genius.
May sound cliche but I really think Young Mountain by This Will Destroy You is my first pick to turn someone onto post rock. It has all the nuances and beauty of post rock but still has very melodic and accessible sound that I think people could get on board with.
No first wave stuff? GY!BE and Sigur Ros make sense but Stereolab, Slint, Tortoise, latter-day Swans (or even post-revival), Talk Talk? I'm especially surprised at that last one, what with Laughing Stock and all that.
Post rock is now considered to be all the garbage explosions in the sky clones. The actual good stuff is just considered experimental rock now. Check out pram
I agree, but I feel Tortoise is way, way overrated. Stereolab is incredible, but not appropriate for this list. Do you like Jim O'Rourke? The Sea and Cake is cool, as a side note!
I dunno, this makes sense as a "how to get into list", it's not "best albums of the genre" I would never suggest Swans to anyone unfamiliar with the genre.
Pretty good list. LYSF is my all time favorite album. A few more quintessential albums and EPs (trying to limit to 1 per artist) of the genre in no particular order, IMHO: Mono - Hymn to the Immortal Wind This Will Destroy You - Young Mountain Maybeshewill - Not For the Want of Trying Long Distance Calling - Avoid the Light Caspian - The Four Trees Mogwai - Come On Die Young The Album Leaf - In a Safe Place Balmorhea - Rivers Arms Do Make Say Think - Winter Hymn Country Hymn Secret Hymn God is an Astronaut - All is Violent, All is Bright Eluvium - An Accidental Memory in the Case of Death Tortoise - TNT El Ten Eleven - El Ten Eleven Hammock - Kenotic If These Trees Could Talk - Above the Earth, Below the Sky Joy Wants Eternity - You Who Pretend to Sleep Tristeza - A Colores Olafur Arnalds - Living Room Songs
These five are five of my favourite albums of all time! Great selecion for newbies. Just to add some ideas, Mogwai and Tortoise are also very important to understand post rock, specially in its beginnings. Great channel, by the way!
I guess I’m late to the party, having just discovered you recently. I’m really enjoying your take on the world of music! If you haven’t heard Mogwai (early stuff in particular) or Russian Circles, I think they could sit nicely on your list here. Glad I found your channel mate! Cheers!
Hey there, the post-rock facebook page brought me here. As of now, I've caught up on all of your videos and you seem like really likeable and well-informed guy, so have my sub. Looking forward to any new content you put out. Cheers from Germany!
Thanks a lot for the sub and your kind words! Funny you should say that, I'll be uploading a math rock video at the end of the week, I'm prepping my choices as we speak! Also, all of the music in the videos is from my band tetra - we'll be releasing a few albums towards the end of the year
Not to get nitpicky but I definitely would've included 'Millions Now Living Will Never Die' but I do love your channel. I really agree with the way you break down music it shows your love and thorough research which is much appreciated. Keep it up man
Nice video. I'd also put out there new listeners should try one of Mogwai's older albums like Young Team. I've always recommended GYBE, Sigur Ros and Mogwai as the 3 to listen to if you're trying to get into the genre.
I just found your channel, simply one of the bests in the music area of youtube. This platform lacks from a lot of channels based on music opinions and analysis, I really love your content, thank you and keep it up.
There are so many amazing Bands/Albums in this Genre. This music is quite Esoteric it seems. Here's my Go-To's much of the time: ( 1 ) : " Above the Earth, Below the Sky" - ' If These Trees Could Talk' ( 2 ) : " We Are Trees" - ' Last Sighs of the Wind' ( 3 ) : " Waking Season" - 'Caspian' ( 4 ) : " Safehaven " - 'Tides From Nebula' ( 5 ) : "Bones of a Dying World" - 'If These Trees Could Talk'
I feel like you should have added some first-wave/second-wave variety in there, but that's just my crappy subjective taste. It's cool that you have guys like Slint, Talk Talk, and Tortoise on your other spotify playlist, but having the UK underground guys from the mid/late 90s would be nice as well. Hell, I think a lot of the experimentation and diversity of the genre really came out during that period and to me, that's what Post-Rock is all about. You have a really sweet channel my man, keep it up.
Appreciate the feedback, yeah there really is so much variance in post-rock that I struggled to put the list for this one together - I decided to settle on records I think would serve as a good intro to the genre, but really the genre deserves another 5 videos on different aspects of it. Guess I better get to work!
IDK, I suppose I'm a traditionalist but I think these are the essentials of the genre, very well made video btw 1) Slint - Spiderland 2) Tortoise - Millions Now Living Will Never Die 3) Dirty Three - Whatever You Love, You Are 4) Swans - Soundtracks for the Blind 5) Talk Talk - Laughing Stock
All incredible albums. I really wrestled with including Spiderland, Millions and Soundtracks, but as the video is supposed to be a kind of introduction to the genre, I don't know how great those records would serve as a 'taster'. I'd love to see someone listening to a track like I Was A Prisoner In Your Skull for the first time haha
I'm here to give a big shout-out to Hakita's "Satan's Tango", aside from the fact that the man is currently working on his own videogame "ULTRAKILL" (absolute banger you should check it out) his Post-Rock, Dark Ambiance álbum "Satan's Tango" is inspired by the Godspeed You! Black Emperor album "F# A# ∞" and the film "Sátántangó" (which is a 7 hr movie), Satan's Tango is absolutely beautiful and i definitely think everyone that is into Post-rock should check it out i assure you a beautiful experience.
Very good job, mate - your videos are really nice. I was surprised by the absence of the milestones and genre-defining Spiderland and Laughing Stock - btw I think they should be in everyone's collection regardless of their "genre". Also Millions now living will never die, perhaps?
Yeah I tried to make the most accessible list possible, something that would give someone the flavour of post rock before going onto more challenging artists like Slint, Tortoise etc. I love all of those records you mentioned by the way
Need to check Gangs. Not that into Sigur Rois, but I enjoy all your other picks. My intro to the genre was Mogwai's Les Revenants and God is an Astronaut's A Moment of Stillness
Yeah do Gangs, after that check out a band called Brontide, their first album Sans Souci is similar and equally good. Love Mogwai, saw them live during their 'Hardcore Will Never Die' era. Need to check out more God Is An Astronaut!
Sigur Ros...yes! While Agaetis Byrjun _is_ a perfect record....I honestly listen to their very first album, Von, even more. It's WAY more ambient and experimental...definitely not as focused on crafting standalone songs. But that's why I love it....I've easily listened to Von while falling asleep 100 times. Layers of post rock shoegazey dream pop loveliness. SO many interesting creative musical avenues...that take patience to unfurl. But one album not on this list that I MUST recommend: *Dredg - "El Cielo."* Super unknown underrated album. Do yourself a favor, find the album, put on headphones, close your eyes, and one hour later....you'll understand what I mean. It's genuinely criminal how overlooked that album is. I've actually never met another human who had even heard of it. Yet every single friend I've ever gotten to listen to that album....is always left a bit stunned at how great it is. So.....that's your assignment! Enjoy!
Your channel is brilliant! Please, keep it up) I was surprised you didn't pick "Destruction of Small Ideals" from 65dos. I think they really tend to sound more math-like on "Fall of Math", "One Time For All Time" - all those noisy glitches and games they play with rhythmic structures. Those albums are perfect in their own way, they built the distinctive, unique sound of 65daysofstatic. But "Destruction of Small Ideals" is a pure masterpiece of post-rock and one of my favorite post-rock albums ever, especially if we're talking about albums to get into genre. There's too much to choose from apart from that: Yundi Halda (sadness, beauty, happiness - name it, it all will make you cry like a baby), Her Name Is Calla (oh god I love them, "The Herritage" is the worst imaginable nightmare for emotional person, in a good-good way), O (Yes, it is the bandname and "When Plants Turn Into Stones" - is one of the best albums of last year), Stubborn Tiny Lights vs. Clustering Darkness Forever OK? ("Infinit Regress" - one of the best albums in my whole library that is actually ginormous)
Thanks mate! Yeah I really picked One Time due to personal preference, but I can see how that record could be considered mathier than 'Destruction'. Some great suggestions to listen to there, I'm going to jump on Infinite Regress and When Plants Turn To Stone!
Yeah I put Spirit of Eden on the follow up spotify playlist, I guess personally I don't think Talk Talk would be ideal as an introduction to the genre, but undeniably an album people should check out. I put Slint's Spiderland on the follow up playlist too, love that album!
Lack of Boris or Talk Talk or Slint here is saddening, and the earth is not a cold dead place by explosions in the sky is possibly one of the most soulless bland sounding albums i've ever heard.
You process instrumental music differently than vocal music. In vocal music, the vocalist is there as a sort of middleman or a surrogate, demonstrating for the the listener how they are to react to the music. In instrumental music, you're on your own, required to come up with your own reaction, your own interpretation. This is more work, and as most listeners don't listen to music to do work or to be challenged, instrumental music will always be less popular than vocal music.
An excellent list as always deep cuts, but not to include one of Mogwai`s albums I find rather strange. True pioneers of the genre. All their classic 90`s albums deserve a place on the list: "Ten rapid", "Young team", "Come on die young", "Rock action" (2001).
Besides Sigur Ros, these are quite interesting albums that I would check out soon. Thanks for the suggestions! As for the Post Rock genre; I got into Slint - "Spiderland" and Mogwai - "Mr. Beast" I love those albums to death!
I was setting up to DJ a prom... playing “First Breath...” by Explosions in the Sky, when the first kids showed up... and immediately panicked that I’d be playing music like that all night.
What about S/T by This Will Destroy You or Dust and Disquiet by Caspian? Those were the two albums that got me into Post Rock. I think this is a great list though.
To be fair, This Will Destroy You don't consider themselves to be post-rock. Kinda ridiculous cause they clearly are, but maybe he wasn't even considering them.
Umber by Bitch Magnet and Spiderland by Slint were the definative post rock records for me. They are the foundation records. Definately think a case can be made for Laughing Stock by Talk Talk as well.
I can't thank you enough for Lift Your Skinny Fists Like Antennas to Heaven. That album rearranged my molecules.

Holy shit I just listened to that Sigur Ros song you mentioned and it turns out I’ve been looking for it for years
Pretty good list. LYSF is my all time favorite album. A few more quintessential albums and EPs (trying to limit to 1 per artist) of the genre in no particular order, IMHO:
Mono - Hymn to the Immortal Wind
This Will Destroy You - Young Mountain
Maybeshewill - Not For the Want of Trying
Long Distance Calling - Avoid the Light
Caspian - The Four Trees
Mogwai - Come On Die Young
The Album Leaf - In a Safe Place
Balmorhea - Rivers Arms
Do Make Say Think - Winter Hymn Country Hymn Secret Hymn
God is an Astronaut - All is Violent, All is Bright
Eluvium - An Accidental Memory in the Case of Death
Tortoise - TNT
El Ten Eleven - El Ten Eleven
Hammock - Kenotic
If These Trees Could Talk - Above the Earth, Below the Sky
Joy Wants Eternity - You Who Pretend to Sleep
Tristeza - A Colores
Olafur Arnalds - Living Room Songs
yup, this is a fantastic channel, and your videos check all the right boxes. very good work, very intelligent.
Also, the intro and outro songs of your videos sound like you're into math rock, so I'm expecting a video on that. Can't wait to compare opinions. :P
Thanks a lot for the sub and your kind words! Funny you should say that, I'll be uploading a math rock video at the end of the week, I'm prepping my choices as we speak!
Also, all of the music in the videos is from my band tetra - we'll be releasing a few albums towards the end of the year
Your videos are fantastic, I hope you keep producing great content and grow your channel because of it!
+Oee123456eeO thanks a lot man, I'm not planning on stopping anytime soon!
Not to get nitpicky but I definitely would've included 'Millions Now Living Will Never Die' but I do love your channel. I really agree with the way you break down music it shows your love and thorough research which is much appreciated. Keep it up man
Thank you Oliver for one time for all time. Never heard of that album until this video. It is great!
The fact that "Hardcore Will Never Die But You Will" isn't on this list is a travesty.
Or any Mogwai.
no Spiderland??
It's a first generation post-rock/ post-hardcore masterpiece that's why
leaves turn inside you >>>>>>>>>>>>>
Alex Zavaski it totally gave birth to post-rock
Theresa Dawson masterpiece
Jupenaattori GTFO!
Nice video. I'd also put out there new listeners should try one of Mogwai's older albums like Young Team. I've always recommended GYBE, Sigur Ros and Mogwai as the 3 to listen to if you're trying to get into the genre.
Thanks Will, yeah I put Young Team on my spotify playlist for follow up post rock albums to check out. Thanks for watching!
Young Team is so overrated. I prefer Rock Action.
I just found your channel, simply one of the bests in the music area of youtube. This platform lacks from a lot of channels based on music opinions and analysis, I really love your content, thank you and keep it up.
Great vid, but most of all I love your voice haha
Haha thanks, I presume you're not from England then? We all sound like that over here.
There are so many amazing Bands/Albums in this Genre. This music is quite Esoteric it seems. Here's my Go-To's much of the time:
( 1 ) : " Above the Earth, Below the Sky" - ' If These Trees Could Talk'
( 2 ) : " We Are Trees" - ' Last Sighs of the Wind'
( 3 ) : " Waking Season" - 'Caspian'
( 4 ) : " Safehaven " - 'Tides From Nebula'
( 5 ) : "Bones of a Dying World" - 'If These Trees Could Talk'
I already suscribed after the vid's intro, liking it a lot. Looking forward to your approach on other cool genres! (And hoping you like some metal :p)
Ha thanks a lot! There will definitely be some metal videos, probably death metal in the next few weeks so look out for that!
And So I Watch You From Afar!!! Go Eire'! Awesome live shows! I might also add:
Maybeshewill
Pelican
Mars Red Sky (a little on the stoner rock side)
This channel is a fucking gem hope you read this and realize how much i appreciate and like your recommendations
IDK, I suppose I'm a traditionalist but I think these are the essentials of the genre, very well made video btw
1) Slint - Spiderland
2) Tortoise - Millions Now Living Will Never Die
3) Dirty Three - Whatever You Love, You Are
4) Swans - Soundtracks for the Blind
5) Talk Talk - Laughing Stock
All incredible albums. I really wrestled with including Spiderland, Millions and Soundtracks, but as the video is supposed to be a kind of introduction to the genre, I don't know how great those records would serve as a 'taster'. I'd love to see someone listening to a track like I Was A Prisoner In Your Skull for the first time haha
awesome and very articulate descriptions of these songs!
Thank god, those are my top 5 fave albums too! Keep on with your videos, well done! you've gained a fan from Perú.
Cheers!! 💜
Ps: You missed Mogwai!
Thanks Lola! Yeah Young Team was just edged out, it nearly made it though!
Think I will check out some of this music. I love how you review. Most reviews I find to be quite shitty but how you describe the music is just great.
Good choice. My favourite post rock track, A Sudden Rain by Bugs of Phonon.
My favorite post-rock album is Young Mountain with This will destroy you, together with godspeed's skinny fists.
I've just discovered this amazing channel. Great!!
Also must recommend Soundtracks for the Blind. The track How They Suffer is an absolute gut punch.
Mono "you are there" is a masterpiece as well
Very good job, mate - your videos are really nice.
I love all of those records you mentioned by the way
best music channel by far. so expansive too
Need to check Gangs.
Winter Hymm by Do Make Say Think is another post rock album that is a must listen. Very underrrated by a great band.
Enjoy!
Tortoise, Slint, Do Make Say Think, Bark Psychosis, Talk Talk last two albums...
Great video and good list. Missing Mogwai and Russian Circles. Everyone has a different ear pallet tho 😅
This is absolutely lovely, what an underrated channel
This is the cooler Tom Holland
This Will Destroy You - S/T - is another great Post Rock Album
Your channel is brilliant! Please, keep it up)
I was surprised you didn't pick "Destruction of Small Ideals" from 65dos.
Godspeed and Sigur Ros are essentials but I would have thought Talk Talk would be on the list too.
F# A# Infinity was my first. That album caught me off guard. It slapped my soul around like I was its bitch. Would recommend.
Dude your channel NEEDS More fame.
I hate people who refuse to listen to music without lyrics. It is a sign that they are either; ignorant, close-minded, or even worse, both!
i agree. someone who hates music without lyrics just tells me that they can only perceive emotion through words, and not through any other medium
Bum's Manifesto however, the voice is often one of the best instruments. Check out Voxs video on Kanye and the use of the human voice in his songs.
MCMF Or that Bjork album Medulla comprised of nothing but vocal sounds. But yeah still, ya gotta love instrumental music.
One word experimental I see what you mean bum but thay are not playing to the masses.
GY!BE \m/ #4 hasn't been heard, thanks for this!
Prateek Varshney all of ASIWYFA's albums are great
An excellent list as always deep cuts, but not to include one of Mogwai`s albums I find rather strange.
Beast"
I love those albums to death!
Spiderland is just incredible, that anguished scream of 'I miss you' on Good Morning Captain is one of my all time favourite music moments
deep cuts Also Talk Talk - "Spirit of Eden" I forgot to mention that one. Those 3 albums were my gateway to the genre
I'll have to check out Gangs, as I've never heard of that record before this.
Do it, I've got to say their last two 'Heirs' and 'All Hail Bright Futures' haven't blown me away, but 'Gangs' is really brilliant
I was setting up to DJ a prom... playing “First Breath...” by Explosions in the Sky, when the first kids showed up... and immediately panicked that I’d be playing music like that all night.
You should've. It probably would've been better.
I agree 100% , spot on choice.
No Tortoise??? :-O Their 2nd album is what got me into post-rock
Check out El Ten Eleven if you guys are into post rock!
Cory Golden Transitions is one of my favorite songs ever, the 7/8 signature makes it very unique
Why isn’t Mogwai here? They’re like the perfect entry-level post-rock band. If I were to put in album here, I’d put Rock Action.
great channel, subscribed!
This is a great channel
I wish you success in the future
I wonder if you could do one of these on Anarcho Punk?
Thanks Eamonn! Anarchy Punk sounds cool, I'll add it to the long list!
Starts watching the video: "oh great, some of my favourite post-rock albums!"
Finishes video: "wait, no Tortoise?!"
I've got to check these out - I love Sigur Ros, and Explosions ITS, but have never listened to anything from the others.
What about S/T by This Will Destroy You or Dust and Disquiet by Caspian? Those were the two albums that got me into Post Rock. I think this is a great list though.
To be fair, This Will Destroy You don't consider themselves to be post-rock. Kinda ridiculous cause they clearly are, but maybe he wasn't even considering them.
you should do a 5 albums for punk/post-punk/hardcore punk/post-hardcore/emo
or dance punk, yknow... lcd soundsystem
Cal Chuchesta i group dance-punk together with post-punk
Yeah lots of genres to get stuck into there!
Good job mate!
Thanks man!
Umber by Bitch Magnet and Spiderland by Slint were the definative post rock records for me. They are the foundation records. Definately think a case can be made for Laughing Stock by Talk Talk as well.
I fucking love 65daysofstatic man. They are an absolute classic.
