Cocteau Twins pre date shoegaze by nearly a decade. So to have included them in this list would have been erroneous. However there's not a single band included on your list that isn't heavily indebted to Cocteaus. Elizabeth Fraser's otherwordly vocals Robin Guthrie and Simon Raymonde's sonic alchemy created a series of albums and eps that are simply without peer in music. All of the elements of Cocteaus sound palet are revisited in Shoegaze. But for me as much I love MBVs Loveless I personally prefer isn't anything. As much as MBV Slowdive and RIDE all produced undeniably great works. Nothing comes close to thee exquiste brilliance of Cocteaus. I'd be interested to see a video guide to Cocteau Twins. Really enjoyed your guides to SWANS Nick Cave Eno etc. Oh and a guide to Gothic Rock, would be awesome too.
My top 5 are: 1. Catherine Wheel-Chrome 2. Power of Dreams-2 Hell With Common Sense 3. Slowdive-Souvlaki 4. The Autumns-The Angel Pool 5. My Bloody Valentine-Loveless
I really adore Slowdive and haven't found any shoegaze band, which comes close. Their sound speaks to me on a different level. Strangely I like their EPs and demos the most. It's a mystery to me why they didn't release so many of their demo songs. They are absolutely fantastic and a real gem and I can't recommend them enough.
Both Avalyns are two of my favourite songs ever. If you like dreamy shoegaze you should check out the album Creation by The Daysleepers. It's got such beautiful walls of guitar fuzz yet the leads still sound very bright and emotional and it sounds entrancing rather than intense.
Shoegaze is slowly becoming one of my favorite genres. I had listened to the first three albums but I'll be sure to give the other two a listen, specially since you seem to like the last one so much. Oh, have you ever listened to A Place to Bury Strangers? They're newer shoegaze (I think their first album is 2009) but they're definitely my favorite band in the genre so far. Never get tired of those guys.
Yeah be sure to check out both Swervedriver and Swirlies's material, really great stuff. I'll be sure to check out more APTBS, I think I've heard a few tracks here and there but not paid too much attention. Thanks for the recommendation!
i really like how you pointed out the bass playing on souvlaki, and i think thats what makes me prefer mbv. the bass grounds the songs on souvlaki, but i absolutely love how there is no real grounding on loveless and the songs just get lost in sonic mush
Nice one for mentioning Ride. Such an underrated, forgotten band in this day and age. 'Leave Them All Behind' and 'Twisterella' were always my favourite two songs by them.
My opinion is, you should add some samples in when you're talking about an album, so we can releate further what do you tell us about it. Great channel and videos btw, keep it up man
Thing is guys, I'm in complete agreement but unfortunately copyright restrictions mean I run the risk of having my videos shut down, and once you get shut down once you'll end up having each video targeted. That's why many of the other music channels on UA-cam don't tend to use snippets either (needle drop, ARTV etc) because you don't want to go to the effort of putting content up and then having it pulled down. I do try to create spotify playlists with all of the music I talk about, so hopefully makes it easier for people to seek out the music I'm discussing.
+deep cuts Hey dude thanks for replying! I know the thing about copyright and such but just sampling it for 10 or 20 seconds still counts as copyright infringement? There must be a way out of this because, i loved your channel and videos since i started watching from this one but you know, it really puts you down once you talk about it so much and can't hear a bit, specially the bit that you choose. But anyway man, Thanks a lot for yout effort on these.
I think that an amazing album you missed is "Dynamo" by the Argentine band Soda Stereo. It blends the style of both Loveless and Nowhere and serves as not just an example of the regional diversity of Shoegaze, but also an example of one of the greatest Latin American rock albums ever released.

Agreed but just can't leave out Lush - Spooky (1992) and Split (1994). The way you described things here is how I feel about songs like Undertow. "Let me try to pull you free". Enjoying the resurgence.
Sweet Trip's Velocity:Design:Comfort is probably the best shoegaze album ever. Definitely recommend it to anyone who likes the more electronic side of this wonderful, wonderful genre, albeit possessing a rather difficult start to tread through.
Being myself a freak of shoegaze, i found this video the most accurate and complete introduction to this fascinating genre, congratulations !! im subscribing !
THANK YOU!! I don't know how in the world people who are shoegazing fans can sleep on Ferment. At least you didn't. Chrome is another shoegazing album that is good.
Ooooh yes! A bit more straight forward "rock" at times....but still plenty of shoegaze and dream pop throughout. What an excellent and vastly underrated band....
The Verve's debut album A Storm In Heaven is very underrated and a top 5 shoegaze album imo. Sounds very different from the 1997 stuff all people know. The early 1992 - 1993 Verve singles are even better.
The way that album starts is so expansive. It is like someone opens a door to a whole new world that you have never been to or heard of. And as I say this, I notice that A Storm in Heaven is not available on Spotify in the US. I fucking hate when that shit happens.
Cocteau Twins' "Heaven Or Las Vegas" is absolutely one of the top 5. Its one of my favorites ever! How can 2 of your bands have them as an influence, but theye're NOT here? What about Lush? What about Curve?
Kevin Shields was heavily influenced by J Mascis when he first heard Dinosaur Jr.’s song, “No Bones” back in ‘88.. Not at all ‘shoegaze’ coming from the American underground. But that track alone I think planted certain seeds in upcoming bands from across the pond.
"When the Sun Hits" by Slowdive is so good, and the previous track "Souvlaki Space Station" is a head-trip. Ride's song "Vapour Trail" is amazing. Swervedrivers' albums "Mezcal Head" and "Ejector Seat Reservation", along with Ride's "Going Blank Again" are great albums.
So glad the cocteau twins were not mentioned. Definitely a band that can't be labeled but have paved ways for those mentioned. Brilliant artistry brought by them and also not to mention on another spectrum the sound and genius of dead can dance...
I remember Horror Head coming out and thinking 'wow!'. Lost interest in Shoegaze around 1990/1 so missed most of Curves later stuff - will add it to my 'must listen' list!
Theres a lot of folks on here surprised about them being on the list. Early Lilys are very heavy Shoegaze. Would we consider Mogwai and Godspeed Shoegaze?
Happy to see a non-obvious choice! However, I find Swirlies' first album “Blondertongueaudiobaton” superior. YMMV. As for the *second* best US shoegazers, I’d say either Lilys (their early stuff; they changed genres every album after that) or Medicine. Best Japanese shoegaze band is Luminous Orange. Best Russian is Blankenberge. Now you know :)

Oliver, I'm glad you put The Swirlies on the list. They almost never get mentioned. I would say Blonder Tongue Audio Baton is their Classic. Anywho, there's a good Shoegaze scene coming out of Mexico. Google it and thanks for the vid!
On the 23rd of March I'm going to see Swans in my country of Romania, and on the Facebook post the venue posted your video "A Guide to Swans" and I have watched it fully and then auto-subscribed. I love your channel, man! Keep up the good work!
Another very nice American Shoe Gaze band you may want to try is the Drop Nineteens. I maybe would have subbed Pale Saints for the Swirlies. Cool premise though. If I had to pick one for a desert Island band it's Ride. Every time. Because it's uplifting. Andy Bell forever. Ride live at a club with a proper sound system is life changing.
Did not expect swervedriver, but I’m glad you included them. I thought they sounded fairly shoegazy when I first encountered them, glad I’m agreed with. Great list.
I'd be curious to hear your thoughts on Galaxie 500. Although they're technically closer to dream pop/indie rock, they do share some similarities with the classic era shoegaze bands, even predating them by a couple years. Their first two albums are all time classics imo.

Started the video just to check how well Oliviers and my preferences matched - was pleased with his selection, including Swervedriver. But I must say that his 5th choice is new for me and quite astonishing - great sounds and variations indeed! Special thanks for that!
Cannot deny your logic here, particularly with SWD and the suggestion of coming from a metal background that would entice you into the movement. So young and so much knowledge you should be proud, I was not expecting that.. subbed
Another great ‘obituary’ of a category gone lost. IF I would miss another groundbreaking album within the genre, I would recommend Pale Saint’s ‘In ribbon’!!!!
We were tripping acid in '91. My buddy had bought his girlfriend a tape and it was My Bloody Valentine's Loveless. We've been having a pretty good time and then he decided to open that tape up and play it and the next thing I know everybody just got real quiet and got all emotional.... 😂
That was 30 years ago, a time I didn't exist. Bizzare to think about it, to think that everything is now different yet the same, to think I am under the sky you were once under
Absolute great list. Raise is still one of my all time favorites. Great description of these epic records. For anyone that cares: Adorable’s “Against Perfection” a must. Also, who tf thumbs this down??
Medicine's "Shot Forth Self Living" is another fantastic debut album, letting you really sink into the music. The first time I listened to the album was on a cassette from a friend my freshman year of college. The 4th track 'A Short Happy Life' was the last song on side 1, and it ends so abruptly, I jumped off my bed to pop the tape out, bc it felt like it had snapped. Somehow I was already halfway thru the album and it definitely hadn't felt like that. I'm epileptic, so I never did any drugs, so no chemical assistance in that feeling. It's still great.
Good list! Glad to see my hometown Swirlies on the list. The Drop Nineteens, and more dream poppy Galaxie 500 were also good Boston bands from around that time. Ride's Vapour Trail, and Dinosaur Jr's Wagon were the only 2 songs played on my car's tape deck that winter my senior year. Taped off of WFNX of course.
I enjoyed the five bands and albums that you put on but once you mentioned Lush and Chapter House was my bands I was missing from this but I am not upset. Thank you so much for making this video it was nice to see someone online make this video.
Anybody watching this, I suggest checking out Lower Heaven. I particularly like their 2008 album Ashes. The first song "Farewell Theme" is my absolute favorite.
Great vid. Shoe gaze is my favorite rock genre. Saw all the great bands back in the early 90s. I agree on the first 3 choices, but I would add Lush "Gala" as every bit as good as "Nowhere." Chapterhouse "Whirlpool" is another gem from that era for anyone interested.
You all should listen to Dynamo by Soda Stereo. Soda was one of the biggest bands of rock in Spanish at the moment and made a shoegaze record in 1992. Secuencia Inicial, Toma La Ruta, En Remolinos y Primavera 0 are some of the highlights of the record.

Kevin Shields' glide guitar is unmatched
@@TheDutchCreeperTDC if Split is underrated I don't know what you'd call Spooky!
Just got here from r/indieheads and I'm really liking your channel. Subscribed.
+TheKevlar4 thanks a lot, glad you're enjoying the content! I feel like there are more people from r/indieheads that would enjoy some of this stuff but it's so hard to get noticed on there
Catherine Wheel-Chrome is my fav.
Where has this channel been my whole life?? Thanks yt suggestions
Anyone like the band Adorable? Most under appreciated band of the genre IMO.
Started the video just to check how well Oliviers and my preferences matched - was pleased with his selection, including Swervedriver. But I must say that his 5th choice is new for me and quite astonishing - great sounds and variations indeed! Special thanks for that!
Curve, Catherine Wheel, The Verve's early stuff, Loop...... great video!!!
I wish The Verve was featured. *A* *storm* *in* *heaven* and *A* *northern* *soul* are great albums.
“Loveless” my first Shoegaze Album which is unbeatable ❤️
Cannot deny your logic here, particularly with SWD and the suggestion of coming from a metal background that would entice you into the movement.
So young and so much knowledge you should be proud, I was not expecting that.. subbed
Nowhere is such a great album! Definitely an underrated band
haha shit yeah I can imagine
That was 30 years ago, a time I didn't exist. Bizzare to think about it, to think that everything is now different yet the same, to think I am under the sky you were once under
The 4 Ride EPs were incredible used to stick them on the turntable excitedly every 6 months great records and Loveless is amazing
I would add Cocteau Twins and Lush. Good choices though, and as usual reviewed brilliantly. I really enjoyed your revoews of prog albums too.
Lush is, i think, the first shoegaze band i heard. Pretty sure i heard more before and/or since.
Absolute great list. Raise is still one of my all time favorites. Great description of these epic records.
For anyone that cares: Adorable’s “Against Perfection” a must. Also, who tf thumbs this down??
Great choice of albums. Nowhere and Raise are incredibly good albums
I found this channel today, I already watched almost all videos. Big love from
Japan
Medicine's "Shot Forth Self Living" is another fantastic debut album, letting you really sink into the music. The first time I listened to the album was on a cassette from a friend my freshman year of college. The 4th track 'A Short Happy Life' was the last song on side 1, and it ends so abruptly, I jumped off my bed to pop the tape out, bc it felt like it had snapped. Somehow I was already halfway thru the album and it definitely hadn't felt like that. I'm epileptic, so I never did any drugs, so no chemical assistance in that feeling. It's still great.
Honorable Mention: Catherine Wheel's "Chrome"
I would have picked Ferment ;)
Mine:
4 ) The Verve - A Storm in Heaven
5 ) Lush - Split (maybe Cocteau Twins - Heaven or Las Vegas)
your channel is a highlight of my year so far. woo!
I don't care what they are called by 'category' but Thank You for introducing me to The Swirlies !! :-)
Love the way you describe the sounds! I love these albums so much
We Irish have created many a sound in music, My Bloody Valentine to Lizzy, Rory to U2 Hell, SLF. Many more! Some yet so unappreciated.
I just discovered your channel a few days ago and I love your videos already. I think you're one of the best music related channels on youtube and I hope you get to where you deserve someday man.
Also, you should do neo-psychedelia next.
Thanks so much for the kind words Ewert, glad you're enjoying the channel!
I will add neo-psychedelia to the list!
I had My Bloody Valentine when it came out! Loved it!
Good list; thank you for including Ride in there!
I think the Verve's EP or A Storm in Heaven could have been included here
Ride’s second album was great too, and the track Leave Them All Behind is possibly the greatest shoegaze song by anyone
I still remember when I first heard Leave Them All Behind, which became my musical awakening.
This
Sadly the rest of the second album really can't keep up with that marvellous opener. It's still very good but yhea.
Siamese Dream got me into Shoegaze
thank you very much for this guide, with the post punk one it's one of the videos that made me discover some of my absolute favorite music !!!
spot on mate. Appreciate you verbally nailing the genre
