    I _love_ that you decided to actually dive into the entire family trees; Thank You!!! 👏👏🥰 💜💜
    You have mad-respect from me - as someone who has also been gradually doing the same, myself, (just out of casual curiosity) over the last several months ever since seeing the vid by KiwiQueen 13. ^-^
    (And I kinda completely *adore* the ways that YOUR designs turned out for all the cats here!! They look _GREAT;_ and I had a lot of fun watching this.👏👏💜 Well done!)
    *However,* I feel as if it should be pointed out that _all_ colorpoint cats (whether specifically Siamese breed cats or not) actually ARE partially-albino cats.
    Because... That is what colorpointing is - a temperature sensitive partial albinism. 🙂
    The albinism is activated by warmer temperatures to switch the production of pigmentation off, but deactivated by cooler temperatures allowing pigmentation to be produced, resulting in dark ‘points’ with lighter coloring on other areas of the body that stay naturally warmer than those darkly colored extremities do; kind of like how a human person’s hands or feet & noses tend to get cold before the rest of their body will too.
    (The colorpoint and albino genes are actually coded for at the same loci; meaning that they are actually known as alleles, or different versions of the same gene, rather than actually being completely separate genes altogether.)
    If a cat has 1 copy of the gene-version for full-albinism from one parent and 1 copy of the gene-version for colorpointing from the other parent...they will still be colorpoint, but carrying full-albinism without showing it, yet _might_ be slightly more lightly colored overall than if they had 2 copies of the colorpoint gene.
    There are also two other similar but different partial-albinism gene alleles other than colorpointing & full-albinism, which are also coded for at the same loci as colorpointing & full-albinism is: Sepia (best exemplified by looking at Burmese breed cats although much like colorpointing it is also not exclusively or only found in Burmese breed cats) and Mocha (a much more newly discovered version of partial-albinism first found in a number of common random-bred [feral ]cats from Thailand much the same as colorpointing & sepia originally were also that looks kind of like a "light sepia" type of coloring) - both of which are also dominant over full-albinism if heterozygously inherited together (just like colorpointing is) AND also co-dominant with each other as well as with colorpoint (showing varying degrees of partial albinism intermediately between whichever 2 types of albinism &/or partial-albinism a cat heterozygously carries together unless the cat has 2 copies of the same version) but Recessive to pretty-much all other coloring & pattern genes(meaning that a cat will NOT be albino, colorpoint, sepia, or mocha at all but will carry it without showing it if that cat only got 1 copy of any one of those genes by its lone self without _either_ also getting another copy of the same version _or_ also getting a copy of any one of the other versions as well instead; but a cat will ONLY have full-albinism if they got 2 copies specifically of the full-albinism version).
    And Dominant-white cats actually CAN have eyes of _any_ color, sometimes even with either heterochromia (aka “odd-eye” or two mismatched / differently colored eyes) OR dichroism (which is when there are both some areas of blue color AND some other-colored areas together within either one or both of a cat's eyes), because typically blue eyes are basically akin to just having white-ness in all or part of their eye(s) .. it's really only pedigreed cats of specific breeds who have been selectively bred to limit their eyes exclusively to certain colors &/or to very specific shades of color(s).
    (Although blue eyes could also be caused by partial or full albinism as well, kinda like how full-albinism causes fur that looks white too, except that albinism never produces odd-eye heterochromia or dichroism though a cat could have both albinism & a White-ness gene which could do so; and partial albinism like colorpointing can produce either blue eyes or aqua colored eyes with an intermediate coloring between blue and green-UNLESS it is specifically the Sepia version of partial albinism, which almost always if not always leaves the eyes colored totally normally.)
    Random-bred cats usually have green eyes, or green eyes mixed with a bit of yellow &/or amber in them(Although plenty of random-bred cats do have yellow or amber colored eyes instead[, occasionally even so dark amber it's almost-brown]..sometimes intermingled together &/or with green). A random-bred cat of just about any eye color often can have kittens that could have the same eye color of eyes or just about any other eye color as well. And cats with blue eyes genetically carry and pass on whatever not-blue color(s) they have inherited from their parents-since blue eyes are not really technically an eye color all its own, just like white is either a lack of pigmentation altogether thanks to albinism or it's White-ness masking over the other fur color(s). Orange colored eyes is actually the rarest shade of cat eye color, and not that often seen at all outside of pedigreed cat breeds who have been selectively bred specifically to achieve it.
    A ginger colored cat is no more or less likely to have any color of eyes than any other [not-ginger ]colored cat is. But solid-colored cats with no White-ness on them, or non-ginger tabbies with no White-ness, are _extremely unlikely_ to have blue eyes, although even that can and does still occasionally happen from time to time.
    But it's totally okay to pretty much just ignore eyes altogether though; because the actual genetics that code for cat eye color(s) are much more complex and much less clearly or well-understood than the genetics for coat colors and patterns are-and most cats can have kittens with such a wide variety of different colors/shades.😊💖😁 Lol 😆

See if the white is a ressesive trait, he can carry the trait but it will not be phiscally shown, and if sandstorm had the same resessive trait, it is possible for leafpool and squirrel flight to have white on them, and pass it on to their kits. You know what stands out to me about genetics in the Warrior Cats series? Based on the variety of colors and patterns among the forest cats, I'm pretty sure they're mostly or entirely descended from escaped domestic cats.
    You see, being a domesticated animal vs. a wild one is actually a genetic difference, not just a behavioral one. Think of the physical differences between dogs and wolves - technically the same species, but there are some noticeable physical differences that come from domestication. Now, if the forest cats are indeed pure-blooded wild cats, they'd be European wildcats (Felis silvestris) - but the problem with that is, European wildcats have hardly any variation in their color and pattern. They're universally brown to grey and universally tabby, generally not with patches of white or anything.
    Now in the Warriors series, we have cats that are black, white, black and white, ginger, pale ginger, brown gray, gray-blue, with stripes, with solid colors, with patches and spots and tortoiseshell patterns... basically the same variety you'd expect to see in a group of domestic housecats. Some of these cats might be pure European wildcats - Tigerstar for example doesn't have anything that would look out of place on a wildcat - but the majority of them are probably descended from housecats (or kittypets) that escaped into the forest to start living the forest life. Even in Tigerstar's case, he probably has some kittypet in his family tree if he comes from the same stock as the other forest cats. (Disclaimer: I've only read through the Warriors series so far with no supplemental materials, so IDK if the author has talked about the origin of the forest cats or Tigerstar's family tree. I'm just going off of my knowledge of animal domestication.)
    TL;DR Everytime Darkstripe gives Firestar shit for being a 'kittypet' I want to slap him upside the head and say "Shut up, you're all kittypets!!!"

    • @LollingCatto
      @LollingCatto  2 роки тому +39

      That's always been my assumption too! Before I read/knew about Dawn of the Clans/Jayfeather's time travelling shenanigans, I always thought the clan cats were originally escaped kittypets/street strays who went to live in the wild forests since they lived right next to a Twolegplace, now I'm less certain, but it doesn't exactly erase the possibility of it being true. And, yes, the authors definitely didn't think about the origin of the forest cats' that much, seeing as they didn't even consider cat genetics XD

    • @TheAshfurApologist
      @TheAshfurApologist 2 роки тому +17

      It's probably more of a purity of wild blood, tigerstar for example is a descendent of ancient skyclan, and darkstripe is his cousin, so he is as well, but yes, eventually there will be a kittypet in their family.

    • @animalobsessed1
      @animalobsessed1 2 роки тому +13

      I thought it was pretty obvious they are feral cats. When people say "cats" they generally do mean the species we keep as pets anyway, and when people are talking about wildcats, they usually specify the species instead of just saying "cat".
      Being descendants of domestic cats also matches with their social behavior, since most species of wild cats are solitary. The color variety isn't just a cats-only thing, there pretty much is not a single wild species that has the amount of color variations we humans breed for in our pets. Usually there is a single coat type that is most beneficial in a certain niche, so that's the one that all animals of that species will have. Exceptions being sexual dimorphism, in which case there are two color varieties within a species, because the males look different from the females. Although when the gene pool becomes small enough to result in a lot of inbreeding, you might see a single recessive mutation pop up in a population, like the color of a king cheetah, or white lions. (Yes, those are the result of inbreeding.)

    • @Lepurcinus
      @Lepurcinus 2 роки тому +6

    Cat eye colours are not genetic, it just depends on their melanin/pigment levels.
    Female cats take a colour from each parent and male cats just take a colour from the mother.

    1:40 an issue with not including male tortie cats is that you ignored the 1 in 3,000 tortie cats will be male, which may seem like a big number but actually isn’t considering how often and many cats are bred.
    While male torties/cali’s are not super common, they’re still more common than chimeras but just have 0 fertility.
    Also chimeras are a completely random mutation of two completely different morph/genes embryos combining together, making both sides straight down the middle two different cats. So this isn’t something at all made genetically, so Spider could’ve been a 100% possible cat that looked the way he does, without worrying about genetics. So I think his character should just be left alone because regardless of his family tree/blood line, he’d always have turned out chimera.

    • @LollingCatto
      @LollingCatto  2 роки тому +12

      I am not going to personally include them, though, because even if they are more common than chimeras, there are some male torties with kits in Warriors, and I can't just have them be infertile. Additionally, they're still technically mutations. I know they're possible and occur in cats, but when doing a punnet square, they're never an option you're going to get because, well: mutation.

Pinestar also only had three kits, two of which died, which led to Tigerstar. Tigerstar had five kits, three of which are dead by now, if I remember correctly, Hawkfrost, Tadpole and Tawnypelt. Bramblestar and Mothwing are his only remaining kits. Bramblestar had four kits, two of which died, leading to Alderheart and Sparkpelt. We've had three litters from the same wild cat, a regular black stripe tabby, and my cat, a bright ginger tom, and whatever other cat she tagged with, which are mostly ginger males or silver ones, and we kept a batch that was born in our vents. We KNOW the mother is NOT orange but the possible father's are, we also know that the mother was either a Tortie dilute like the one my asshat brother threw outside which he said he took to the pound, anyway, or the mother was a long fur black cat. We have out of the litter of 6, 1 black slinky long fur, one short fur soft calico with slight white marking, 1 ginger tom, 1 regular black stripe tabby with white marks, and one silver cat( not full silver but not enough peach to be considered molted), and one darker colored but I guess a basic Tortie

    • @LollingCatto
      @LollingCatto  2 роки тому +2

      They are rare! And you know why they're rare? For the same reason the red gene can't be transfered from a male parent to male offspring! Red is a sex-linked gene, meaning it's on the X chromosome, and not on the Y chromosome. Females have XX chromosomes, allowing them to have two colors, while males have XY, causing them to only ever have one color. For offspring to be male, they must receive the Y chromosome from their father, meaning that male offspring will never receive an X chromosome from their father. Therefore, toms will never receive the red gene from their father. It also means ginger she-cats are more rare, as they have three possible combinations- OO for red, Oo for tortie, and oo for no red, while males only have two- O for red, o for no red.

    cat eye colours are wild - you probably already know the white furred/blue-eyed cats being linked to deafness (its the same in double merle dogs and one specific pale horse, so it's very likely linked to some defect caused by melanin content in the hairs of the inner ear) - but there is also a newish mutation thats popped up in cat fanciers of a dominate blue eyes unlinked to coat colour! messybeast is a great source for cat genetics - it's just a personal website but everything is meticulously sourced and has checked out from my admittedly pretty cursory overview.
    and, while i know you're favouring first of their lines designs over everything else, nugmeg could theorectically have been a hidden tortie - its a very fancy name for having a very tiny tiny patch of the second colour, some as small as spots on pawpads. it wouldn't contradict her description either.

    So I'm just gonna throw this in here, Spiderleg doesn’t even 100% need a mutation. He could just be a black cat who's fur is particularly prone to rusting or getting sun bleached. Rusting on black cats usually results in a brownish red very rusty color. When i was growing up my dad had a black barn cat who's belly was constantly rusted. Given we were prone to catching him lounging on his back on the pourch do it makes sense his belly rusted. I personally imagine the Erins just didn't realize rusting wasn’t an actual pattern and one of them met a rusted cat they thought looked cool.

    And I'm not sure about this, but if I'm right there is no need to have Jake with white spots because if I'm right cats may jump a generation for some details, like if Scourge took the white paw from the grandma

    • @LollingCatto
      @LollingCatto  2 роки тому +1

      Yep, male torties do exist! But they're mutations caused by one of three things (XXY mutation where male is infertile, chimera cat where two cats become one as zygotes, or half-dilution which is when the dilution messes up). Also... tabbies aka stripes do not determine the colors of cats, so two, for example, brown tabbies, cannot have a tortie kit.
      White spotting can be hidden/difficult to see on cats that have a low version of it, yes, but Jake would still technically have the gene for it! I just like to visually represent it so that's easy for everyone to know what a cat has. White spotting is dominant so unlike recessive genes it cant exactly "skip" a generation from grandma to grandson. Jake or his mate would have to have it, even if it wasn't visually present on the cat :)

    Slight correction:
    - A cat can carry white spotting but not express it
    - two low grade white spotting cats, can in fact pop out a solid white. Its uncommon and its more likely to range in the low grade to mid grade range.
    - Fawn and cinnamon are technically shades of brown, so there's four shades of brown lol
    Edit: eyes are simple, blue are the only ones that are 100% guaranteed for cats that have the colorpoint gene, and cats with high grade white can have them. Its more likely a cat that has the dilution gene to have green eyes but its not guaranteed, every other color can honestly pop out randomly even if both parents don't have that eye color :)

    • @LollingCatto
      @LollingCatto  2 роки тому +1

      -Yes and no! It's just not easily seen white. My two cats have "hidden white"! It's typically just a few hairs or can appear creamy because of the other colors interacting with the white around it. But the white is still on them somewhere. Just "hidden"!
      -I'm sure it's not impossible, but since it's not all that common, I prefer not to use it ^^
      -That depends. Chocolate is brown, but it's dilution, lilac, tends to be more gray. I've heard it can appear brownish though. But cinnamon and it's dilute fawn are definitely brown! But if you add caramelization to the mix I think you can get at least two more shades of brown? Uncertain

    ginger females who aren't patched are very rare and generally have mainly a cream base or more towards a brownishh from what I've seen

    The first time I watched this…I remember that I haven’t even finished the second series, so I had NO IDEA any of the characters you mentioned, but guess what? I didn’t even take notice to the spoilers at all. I didn’t even know they were there!

    When you did socks, i suddenly got flashbacks of my cousins cat, who looked just like socks, and somehow, their cat was also named socks!
    (Also my cousins cat socks was female but idk what happened to her when my cousin moved away)

    7:22 this is flame colored, its seen as a muted ginger, so yes it is technically a brown but its the canon design, in the "sunset" book from tnp, he is only really orange because pf the sunset around him, so yes it is really canon exept for the white spotting, (ps he is also described as a tabby in one of the books, "handsom ginger tabby tom" unless its a mendela effect.)

      black cats can have siamese kittens! they're likely carrying the colorpoint gene, as it is recessive :)
