I was at this Irvine Meadows, Ca Lolapalooza show 2nd row orchestra and to this day it stands out for me. Jane's had huge screens behind them onstage and throughout this song images of The Battle of Stalingrad, decaying time elapse images of rotting animals, flowers rotting, just a huge amount of graphic decaying and blossoming imagery to take in when the band's right in front of you and your rolling hardcore on pure MDMA/ecstasy. It was simply incredible. And they even had the "lovely Morgan" playing violin with them at the time. It's cool that Jane's is still around and playing here and there and they kind of went New York for awhile, but JA at this stage of the game, proud of their LA heritage and yet slowly coming apart at the seams...well you had to be there to truly appreciate the difference and the fact that JA now is a far cry from JA 1986 up to 2003.
One of those gems that just hits me differently after many years of hearing it often and then here and there. It was a favorite of my late cousin. This song seemed to have an eerie way of being present in our adult years when I would stop by, smoke some good bud, banter like the teenagers we were, or basically hangout awhile. I always knew then our time together would be generously brief when this played. Generally, meaning a song he’d play before going out to party, date some chick, etc. I realized we had grown up and didn’t run the streets of LA together as often anymore. Come to think of it now it was almost like this Interview with The Vampire dynamic we had in those late settings of his life. That sorta intimate dialogue that wouldn’t otherwise happen or even exist to the outside world if you and your cousin didn’t share it. In some ways when this played we were kids again riffing off each other, picking one another’s brains, picking apart songs such as this classic. But, for some reason when this song played during those times we spent together, I realized secretly, without him saying so, that he really gets me. This dude really loves me.
