I was thinking the same thing. Like Evan Olson came up with the backstory and paid the Reply All crew to record the episode in order to respark his career. Remembering an obscure song from the 90's in such great detail the song can be almost duplicated but he can't remember the name of the artist or song just doesn't seem believeable. But stranger things have happened.
@kareynolds45 I mean it's fairly common of a thing, no? I mean, do you yourself not have several songs you know by heart but can't remember the name or band? That seems like a fairly common experience to me tbh.
They got the key right. They matched the tempo exactly. There's a of ton of melodic quirks (the descending tritone at 1:03 is a good example but the guitar solo is chock full of them) that a non-musician wouldn't remember precisely, much less be able to communicate. It is a little unbelievable.
For those wondering, Tyler's version was on a lower key... Whoever made this side by side transposed it to the same key so the listener can appreciate the true depth of the memory
I listened to this with my mum and one of my sisters, when Travis gets to the studio, my mum says 'this'll be good - Camp guys have great memories' - a stereotype I've never heard before.
if this is not adjusted... okay, this guy has got a pretty remarkable musical memory. you'd actually be amazed at how good we are at doing things like this -- there's a reason a lot of rote things are memorized by schoolchildren to the tune of a song, and how privileged musical memory seems to be even in people with neurogenerative disorders. but the bonkers thing here is that the cover, after all these years, is in such a close key, and so many harmonic things hit just the right mark, and it seems like he's not the kind of dude who thinks about modality or scales -- just how he heard it. that's pretty incredible, even sort of unbelievable -- this guy might have some latent perfect pitch ability in his head to get so many tonal things right. I've played and performed for years, have extremely good relative pitch, and getting so close a key on a song I loved 10 years ago would be really hard for me to do.
@moxfyre81 the recreation is only a little bit lower, but the fact it's just a bit lower yet he remembered the melody and the instruments so damn near perfect is incredible
Getting close to the same key could be a coincidence, it's just the easiest key for him to sing or play in. But yes getting all that instrumentation right is very impressive. I play piano by ear and have a good memory but not that good.
If your theory was real, then Im very glad he did, because this song is amazing and I might have never gotten to hear it if it wasnt for this show. It's very sad to know that many great songs are lost forever just because record labels dont support them.
It sounds like the recreated version has been digitally pitched up to match the key of the original. Still amazing that he remembered the lyrics after all that time. BTW, for the people staying it's staged, you must be fun at parties. I don't think it was staged, but that's not really the point.
The recreation’s chorus is flat. Is that because of Tyler’s memory, the singer’s voice straining to hit the right notes or both? I didn’t understood why they kept saying it sounded like U2 until I heard the original. The recreation’s chorus sounds more like 90’s indie nerd-rock than anywhere near U2.
@@wellesradio Agree - the recreation singer misses the mark in the chorus. But also, Tyler's memory missed that the chorus starts on the minor 6 chord instead of the major 1 which gives it a completely different feel. The recreation singer could've felt that the chorus melody didn't match the chords and did the best he could.
@@teya4cln793 You might want to make a pinned comment about the shifting or add it to the description. You did really well adjusting it for this video though! Thanks for uploading!
teya4c IN, You shifted the pitch of the version created from memory to better match the tempo and key of the original. As a result someone here in your comments is claiming it is staged. Interesting comparison, but not true to the story in the podcast. Anyway, Evan should have been a star. Glad this song is getting so much interest.
I did shift it to match the key and tempo of the original! I should have put a title in the video explaining that. I did it to make the similarities and differences in rhythm, melody, and instrumentation easier to hear. Not meant to be dishonest but I should have disclosed it in the video.
Straight back to the Reply All archives to listen to this episode in full :) Question - why did Reply All end? The presenters were brilliant, the ideas daring - what happened? Did they get eaten by the woke purges of 2022?
I'm sure you know, five months later, but there was an internal dispute where the workers had tried to unionize and a couple people, including Sruthi and PJ Vogt, decided to go against that idea, and, yeah, the Reply All team didn't like that. So then they left, and the boring English-speaking dude and Alex just couldn't keep the show going, so they ended it. I believe that's the gist of it. Not sure if that constitutes "woke purges of 2022", but it just didn't work after PJ and Sruthi weren't a part of it any longer. Thankfully, the two of them now have Search Engine (Sruthi as the producer, PJ as the host) and it is GREAT.
@@mrausterellis I didn't know, I got the impression that there were accusations of sexual advances. Thanks for the recommendation, will definitely check it out. And I agree, the English guy was dull as dishwater. (I can get 'dull' from the BBC...)
You've never known someone with a photographic memory for music? I have. My husband and two of my children. It's ridiculous how they can perfectly remember every nuance of a song after only hearing it a couple times.
It is staged. A mutual friend knows the person who asked for help. He has always been a fan of Gimlet. His favorite episode was an Every Little Thing episode where they also investigated a forgotten song (the song is Dear Laughing Doubters). He said that he wanted to have a podcast episode like that again, so he came up with some obscure song that's hard to Google.
Wabi Sabi ... this is stupid. Of course he was a previous fan of Gimlet, how would have thought to write into Reply All otherwise? And it’s not weird that someone who is super nostalgic about finding the music they grew up with would be fan of that episode of ELT. It’s like you’re accusing the guy of being consistent to his interests
Tyler’s wife just lost every “That’s not what I said” argument for all of eternity.
AHAHAHAHA! You win the Funny! Like A Boss!
The satisfaction I got from hearing the full, original version at the end of this episode borders on a spiritual experience.
Me too
Yep!! Agreed
I remain amazed by this episode, and in particular by the excellence of this recreation. It almost seems impossible to believe. Yet, here it is.

I need Tyler's version where he whisteles and "doo doo doo" for every instrument
😂😂😂
The fact he remember that all from memory was really impressive
UA-cam, you never disappoint. I was so hoping someone would do a side-by-side compare. Thanks much!
Incredible how close the other recording was

It's not "musical memory", it's "pattern memory". Humans are hardwired to recognise (and remember) patterns. It's how we learn...

unbelievable how well he was able to recreate the song. definitely my favorite episode. thanks for the comparison :)
I’m still not 100% convinced this was not a plant by Evan Olsen to get his single back in the public’s eyes.

Well edited man. Two of them together like this sounds like its own song.
This is the exact video I was looking for even i didn't know it existed! Thank you!
I’m just amazed. I love humans sometimes.
Exactly what I was looking for
Essentially, they nailed practically EVERYTHING except the chorus bassline root notes.
They didn't have that weird instrument in the beginning.
And also the octave, I assume, since it's pitch shifted for the video. But that's very forgivable. It fits Tyler's vocal registry.
there is a version of the cover without the talking on Reply All's soundcloud if anyone wants
Thanks a lot, I have been looking around for half an hour for exactly that ❤️
Just amazing... thanks for putting this together my dude!
Tyler nailed it. Most projects fall short of their goal. This didn't. And I learned about Evan Olson. Hell yeah!

1:44 That recreated guitar riff is actually better than the original imo
Imho the original one has a more "it's the last day of summer so let's give everything !" Kind of vibe

One of the problems is they drop the drums out for most of the chorus. In the original the drums keep rolling through the chorus.

How’d they get the key right? And the exact timing, and the lyrics, and random licks
