You are right on. I went from 14” to 17” to 19” to finally get the compromise I needed. Shortest windshield looked the best but the tallest gave the best protection and eliminated most of the buffeting. Still get some in cross winds, 80% of time it’s just right. I also prefer to be able to look over, instead of thru the windshield . Thank you for yours post.

Yep, it's all about experimenting and finding what works! Cross winds are the worst! 😅 Now that it is finally dialled in I am loving it, glad you got yours set too! Cheers for the comment, ride safe ✌️⚡

Richard, you show optimism and persistance! 14" to 17" to 19", there's a lot of money there! But you got a result!
Then... what to do with your collection?

I have the aftermarket 8” screen on my original batwing fairing and at 5’11” (180 or so) it is very efficient for long motorway riding. It keeps most of the wind off your body which is the main thing to stop fatigue. There is no buffeting around the head. I prefer the look of the El Paso though. Thanks for your reviews, I’m chasing up the floorboards you mentioned.👍😷

Dennis Gearside thanks mate, yep really like the looks of the El Paso which is why I’ll compromise on some wind to the body. The floorboards are the Hex Floorboards from Kuryakyn- you can get them direct from their website or I got mine through Get Lowered Cycles. 🤙

Well done! On the mark just like your other posts. Really enjoy them. This one is a very informative and detailed breakdown of the pros and cons of having a windshield/faring and what kind to have. I also have a 2018 SP. I took the faring off prior to riding out of the dealership and never put it on because as you correctly state, as good looking and practical as it may be, it simply takes far too much from the looks of the bike.
Next, you are also on the mark about the climate where one lives. With the almost all year round sunny weather that we have in southern California, not only the usefulness of the windshields and farings are almost meaningless (maybe useful for 50 days of the year), they actually take away all the fun of riding a bike by eliminating that "ocean breeze on the face" and "feeling of freedom." Like you I do like the feel of the breeze/wind. Yet I also agree that one does get tired and beat when touring after hours of riding against the wind. So assuming the climate is relatively mild, a windscreen such as the one you have installed is plenty good. It's a perfect balance between no protection at all versus blocking almost all the wind with those huge farings.
I personally am looking for a windshield, not a fairing, that will shield my chest from the wind while allowing my face to enjoy the breeze. If I can't find a similar look and efficient windshield as yours, then I will take the stock faring I have and replace the 2" visor with a 5"-9" one. Any other suggestions are welcomed. Thanks.

Liverpool4ever hey thanks for comment, here in Perth we have a very similar climate to Southern California - and we have that sweet ocean breeze too! Glad you are enjoying your bike and hope you find the setup right for you!

I just ordered the 15" Gustaffson Grand Touring that fits in the original fairing. It took a lot to get myself to click the "Order" button. There are so many choices and unknowns, but I think I made the right decision for me. I'll have to make a video when I get it in and let you guys know how it worked out! :) Thanks for all your great content, Brother!

Well-done video. VERY good narration. I hate trying to listen to some one who can't get their thoughts across in a coherent manner. Good job. Love the angle of the WS relative to the forks. Intelligent thought about having to find a compromise you can live with. Have ridden for 50 years, just sold the first bike I have had that had a WS. What a revelation. Looking for a good one for my 750 Shadow. Thanks for a worthwhile watch. Only critique would be your lighting. It was a little dark with the sun at your back and being in the shadows.

I wanted to keep the mini fairing, so I went with a Slipstreamer 10” lite tint, for the most part it is ok and doesn’t take away from the look of the bike. After seeing your El Paso, it looks great and has me re - thinking my choice, anyway I could live with both, one for short hops on a warm day and the El Paso on the long rides where the weather is unpredictable. Thanks for the video. Safe riding.

Same here, I also have a 10" Slipstreamer which is good. However, that El Paso really looks nice. I like the way you can see the forks/bars etc. through the front and the way it slopes back forms a really nice line.

From what I've seen from dozens of videos, lowers are the key. Even with a full fairing it sounds like there still can be significant buffeting which can be 100% corrected with lower fork wind deflectors. I just ordered both a windshield and lowers for my Dyna. I got the quick release too, so I can cruise for hours on the highway and then just pull off my windshield for riding around town. It will be interesting to see what the wind flow is with the fork deflectors and no windshield. I like the wind up to 50 mph (80 kmh) but over that the strong wind kind of freaks me out and I don't feel very stable on the road, especially when it is gusting.

Great video most informative that I have seen. I am 6' tall I ride a indian scout, I had a 24" freedom windshield which blocked the wind but caused a side to side rocking motion at 65 mph. I removed it and enjoy the ride a lot more but the wind is too much. The El paso was suggested, contemplating the Memphis baat wing but unsure of the height and look. Any suggestions?

Older review I know, but I just got what I think is a great deal on a Memphis Shields El Paso in yellow gradient for my yellow 1996 Honda Magna. I hear these are a little on the think side, and will bend at high speeds. What's your experience with that, if any?

Micheal, did you have any problems fitting the windshield to the Sport Glide?. I am really struggling with mine!. It just does not fit over the headlight like yours does!. The fitting kit is correct for the bike, but just does not raise the windshield above the headlight and its impossible to fit when assembled. Its at the highest possible setting with the first clip just below the upper triple tree. Reverse engineering the fit by putting the brackets on the bike and the trying to mount the windscreen highlights the lack of clearance with the headlight. Just checking if you remember any fitting problems with yours before I go back to the supplier?. Thanks.

    • @TheMotoBarista
      @TheMotoBarista  4 роки тому +1

Sorry I missed this comment Peter! Did you manage to fit the shield ok in the end? I had no problems - it just sat straight into place. I fit the clamps on the forks first - as high as possible - and then the windshield fit perfectly into place. Double check you have the clamps on correctly. Is the headlight cutout the right size?

The mild mannered gentleman rider and Barista smacks you unsuspectedly square in the forehead with the naked truth of it, hahaha -- classic! You could also call it a dark art. The amount of research coupled with a ton of trial and error drives you about into an asylum. Excellent production, and funny and light, too! Keep up the great work and info flow, my friend. Fantastic review. Very good information. I really like the looks of the shield on your Sport Glide. What color option did you choose? I'm thinking for me the Memphis fats may be the way to go. I live in Colorado and ride in cold weather quite often. Down into the teens. I'm hoping to block as much wind as possible. I have already purchased and installed Memphis shades hand guards. Nice addition.
I may give the Klockwerks offering a try before I go with a complete windshield. I do like the factory fairing on the bike. Tough decision either way. I do need to come up with a solution soon. Starting to get pretty chilly in the early mornings.
Decision. Decisions. Keep up the great content. Really enjoy your videos. Take care.

Hey mate, so I went the Black Smoke tint, there is an option that is ever darker but not quite my style and possibly illegal in Australia! Really happy with the tint in person though, perfect. Oh dude, I would love to visit Colorado, definitely on my list next time I'm back in the States, especially to go riding! To block the wind, you are right the Fats would be better. BCB SILVER HAWK spot on comments Sir! I live in North Texas, while we don’t have the cold that you do, it does get cold. I opted for the Klockwerks windscreen. After running it for about 9 months, I think I can give a fair appraisal of it. Like Michael said of the El Paso, it keeps the wind off of your head. At speeds of 70+ mph, I can turn my head to check for traffic & not feel any meaningful buffeting. But, and there is a but, I feel buffeting & turbulence coming around the tank & hits me in the chest. While it’s not a killer, it does become fairly annoying. There’s a company out in California, Los Angeles Fairing Co., that makes some amazing fairings. The fairing extends a little farther down the forks & has small flares that no one else has. A friend has one on his Dyna & absolutely loves it because it really manages the air. The problem is that they don’t make one to fit the Sport Glide with its 7” headlight.

I swear, I do not have any buffeting or vibrations with this shield and the noise has dropped significantly! It took me some height and angle adjustments, different directions of winds play a role, as does the helmet I wear (slightly) - but honestly I am ready to take this windshield now for some 8 hour highway riding days no problem at all! I wear in ear headphones when I ride too and I can now hear podcasts so much clearer at lower volumes due to reduced wind noise.
