    For me the enjoyment comes from watching the road trip and you (A) emulating what we’d all be doing as owners and (b) reminding us of the fabulous landscapes in Norway. Plus I can’t imagine that their are any motoring journalists that would provide key detail on things like the restriction in power after long charging stops. As a Kona owner I had a sit in an Ioniq 5 today for the first time and it was the spaciousness of the interior that was really striking. Great blend of information and enjoyment as always and looking forward to part 2.

    12:00 Hello Bjørn, this is actually the cumulated energy from the solar since day 1 of manufacturing of the car, not since "ignition". The values are in "thousands" in US numerical with "," for thousands. So it is 38956 Wh or 39kWh generated for the life of the car, not since you started and not 38Wh. Just a little info as this representation of thousands is confusing, hope this helps you with your further tests of the roof!

    • @haakonfg
      @haakonfg 2 роки тому +13

      I think he understands that since he shows both the picture from the start of the trip and the "live" picture. The picture from the start is only a couple of frames at around 11:50.
      Start was 38,921 Wh and "live" was 38,956 Wh. Difference is 35 Wh, and therefore he says that this is todays free energy so far :)
      But anyway, your explanation is good. Since it was a bit unclear, and it is always confusing with the US ",".

      @@jonathanalcocer3872 i heard you can get ~5km per day. And from my calculations that could be true.

      will take quite some time to pay off. But i like it for camping. Saves some space. But 200W panels cost about 10% -25% depending on quality so it is not to badly priced.

    Bjorn, love your videos! Now that I'm seriously looking into getting an EV, I'm more concerned with actually having reliable chargers where I want to go, that are not over subscribed vs. how quickly I can get to my destination. Perhaps that's because I need to travel to underdeveloped areas of the US west where that's the main concern (especially without a tesla...). I'd be keen to see you visit areas of Norway really off the beaten path, and push the charging network to the limit vs the speed of travel.

    • @vp5429
      @vp5429 2 роки тому

      Same here. I’d like to get an EV but the charging network is really crap around here. (Colorado and Wyoming) Basically either buy a Tesla or don’t road trip. We installed standard level two charger and the Tesla charges up great overnight. Real-world range Co to Wy about 200 miles in winter charged up to 100% “300 mile range.” And make sure to get the winter tires or all-season tires! Fun but quite harsh, not at all comfortable.

Wonder if there is a kwhr for x hrs combination limit that will always cause the max battery temp to be exceeded. Don't like the idea of power output limits with no indication to the driver. If expecting lots of go but get little, drivers might overcommit with hazardous results.

    Just a big what if:
    How many percent does the voltage drop in the Tesla MY when it is used with "only" 240 kW of power? (like max. power iOniq 5?)
    Because it does matter (important), how much power is taken from the battery! The consumption-peak of the TMY is much higher than the iOniq. (current in Amper)
    Perhaps the Tesla battery also only collapses below 10% with this power consumption. (voltage)

    The IONIQ 5 has a battery chemistry that needs lower temperatures. It already charges at 200+ kW at 27 degrees C. But downside is the power limit after charging. Many things on the IONIQ 5 make me think it is designed primarily for people who cannot charge at home:
    - high charging speed
    - solar roof, your car will regenerate energy when parked somewhere at the curb.
    - battery chemistry as above, so you could drive to a HPC from home and fast-charge the car there without preheating, like you do with a petrol car on a filling station.

    I don't understand how it gets full power when flooring.
    Power is torque x rotation.
    So you should get full torque but the peak power should only be there at peak rpm?

    I'm really considering changing Tesla model 3 SR+ for the long range AWD ionic 5 but here in Montreal Canada it's-15c and I get about 280-300km real driving so I'm wondering if it's worth it to make the switch because I want something bigger but that gets more range as well🤔 do you think the ionic 5 would get better range than the Tesla model 3 SR+ ?

    It seems a nice car. I didn't really though about it, but maybe... How big/convenient is the back ? and with back seats down ? I assume in southern countries (France) solar power would bring more km per day.
    I went to official web site, and a bit sad, not so many colors.
    The main drawback I quickly see, the the GPS. A bit outdated, and not a really multi-function screen. I hope they will improve it

      The Size of the trunk/boot is 1600L, so quite large, the front end also has a small storage space of 25~50L (dependinf if you have the awd ver or not)
      According to owners the GPS has already been updated with a new ui.
      The Solar panel probably wont ever charge your car to full from empty but it can definitely save you a few KW for every day its left in the sun, probably the equivelant of a few full charges every year. Plus having it charging by sun means if you ever run out of juice on the road you could wait a few hours then start up again maybe getting to the next charging station.

      interesting since the car and feature is marketed to people living outside of South Korea, one would expect use of lidar and similar sensors are good enough to not go "average person and crowed sourced" but yeah, we all know how bad these systems handle some snow, rain, bad maintained road marks, low sun and so on. In 10 years I'd consider using and paying for a self driving feature but nothing is good enough today in all normally occurring conditions to trust my own and fellow travelers' life. The insurance world agree..

      @@bjornnyland it's in the climate menu where you heat the seat or press the warmer "button" in the climate panel. It's not intuitive at all, unfortunately.

      @@bjornnyland You press "Warmer" shortcut so you get to the screen where you set seat heater. Instead of moving the "dot" upwards 1-2-3, you drag it downwards 1-2-3 for ventilation. It's one of these functions that you find by chance OR need to see once to know. Bad design.

    This is a great car. Shame its not any better in range that a Kona EV.
    It's 300km to my closest charger and 900km to my closest over 50kw.
    The batterys getting that hot and struggling to manage heat is worrying as it is over 30°c most days of the year in QLD Australia.

      There is a vent to cool things down, it opens on its own when needed. Because he had just fast charged the car, everything was bloody hot. It's a cool safety feature in my opinion.

    • @vp5429
      @vp5429 2 роки тому +1

      Probably you need the EV as a second car, charge it up every day at home with a relatively inexpensive level 2 charger (even a Tesla.) Alternatively, you might enjoy a plug-in hybrid like the Volt (RIP), maybe you can find a used one. I have a 2014 and it’s been great for daily errands in town, charges up to its 30 mile electric range every morning but for our occasional long trips it uses gas.

    Wrong. Both Taycan and GT pre-heats the battery but you have to navigate to a charger with 170kW+ speed. If less it won’t preheat.
