Nice job. What I do with my clamps is give them a quick wipe with paste wax or even a quick spray with wood glide. This does 2 things, stops glue sticking to the clamps and also stops the clamps turning the wood black. I find this method quicker and easier than using painters tape. Just another option for you especially if running low on tape and want to crack on with a project.
I know what you mean about glue up stress. I tell my wife when I am about to start a glue up that if the house catches on fire then call the fire department, don't bother me. 😂
I like what I see as far as techniques with the exception of running boards that have not been face jointed on the table saw, but I guess not that big of a deal since only 5/4. I have the same saw (is yours the 4 horse?) and similar 8" jointer, so I know getting the board to fit on the jointer is key. I personally think a 1" thick top is too thin for being exposed to the heat from the drier. Did you finish both sides? I have wondered if putting that aluminum ducting tape to reflect heat would be an option, though I know rubio specifies to never apply tape/adhesive to their finish. I built a 1.5" soft maple top that rests above a modern, well insulated dishwasher, and the heat from it has caused the board to cup in a way that the center of the top is high by 1/8"
Quick question. How many inches apart do you space your dominos? I use biscuits and dowels and most of the time I find myself using to many and it makes the glue up frustrating. Just wanted another woodworker’s opinion. Thanks
I only used 3 rows of biscuits for this top which was almost 7’ long. These boards were pretty straight after the machining so it didn’t need a ton of alignment.
I guess I over engineer mine! It looked like you had good alignment with yours with minimal biscuits! Great build! I just posted my laundry room build on my channel, but I overkilled the biscuits and spaced them about 14” apart!
just curious when you buy rough lumber is it cheap considering you're gonna lose a lot of it through the milling process just to get a straight flat usable board out of it. or is it the same annoying process as going to Home Depot looking for something usable and paying a ton of money for it.
Good question. Some rough material mills up really nice and I’d say it’s worth it. Some material takes way too much effort and I feel like I should’ve just bought S4S. I think it depends. Honestly, I kinda enjoy the milling process though. I think ultimately you get a better product milling it yourself with the right tools.
Honest question? I just found your channel ( I am a Finish Carpenter) and I wanted to see how you done these counter tops? Now 99.9% of ppl who click these channels are DIY guys/ gals and some like me who make a living doing fine Carpentry. I know of no one who says “ hey honey let’s just watch a carpentry channel tonight and catch some music while watching”? So my question is ; what in the world is up with that music channel? And why hv music? Is it playbook type thing ? You know YT says this is how to make a video , make sure to add free really bad music to your video? And why speed it up ? Just cut it out of the video cause those trying to learn actually can not while at 3,4 or 5 times the normal speed? And it’s not just you it’s 90 plus % of all the trades channels I try and watch. With exceptions and those channels are huge ! Why ? Just work and teaching others ! Not entertainment per se. If you cut out the music, add more teaching, and tech skills. From start to finish I think you may be pleasantly surprised! ( Finish Carpentry TV, Inside Carpenter, awesome framers, N/E Woodworks, ect.,.). I really wanted to see how you did this but skipped it then thought? At least leave an honest opinion as a guy who consumes these videos and has learned tons from them! You are targeting guys like me! I had a customer call and ask about similar type project to be done! Anyway I truly wish you the best and you may say “ what a creep”. Really I just want teaching channels and I suspect other carpenters also want the same !
These longer videos are great! Beautiful countertop!
Glad you like them!

I like that idea.
Very nice, enjoyed your video!
Tips from someone who does this a lot: Joint, plane, joint one edge, then rip straight. Setting a track on a wobbly board can lead to bad outcomes.

Nice video. Got me subscribed. How'd you finish it?
Thanks! Rubio Monocoat in Cotton White.
Great video man. How clutch it it to have that track saw to get the initial straight edge?!?!?!?
It’s awesome! I Never regret buying it.
Why not buy the 106 inch track it would be a lot easier to work those long cuts
Unfortunately I just can’t buy everything
