The Corvette is a BARGAIN! (Chevrolet Corvette Stingray 2022 review)

  • The mid-engined Chevrolet Corvette C8 was rumoured for a long time, finally built and is now becoming more available in Australia - though watch out for a nasty sting from dealers in the form of high delivery charges. Technically, you should be able to pick up a factory right-hand drive 2022 Corvette Stingray 3LT in Australia for about $170-180,000 driveaway depending on spec, which strikes us as a big bargain compared to a Porsche 911 or a entry-level Ferrari or Lamborghini supercar!
So, what’s the Corvette Stingray really like? We sent Chasing Cars road test journalist John Law out with a subtle, grey C8 Corvette on some challenging Australian roads to find out whether it’s worth your cash.
The mid-engined Corvette starts at $145K plus on-road costs in Australia for a ‘base’ 2LT model and heads up to $190K for a Carbon Edition. All use a 6.2-litre petrol V8 engine making 369kW of power (494 hp).
As always, we don’t accept advertising from car manufacturers, and we’re powered by Budget Direct - so this is an independent, honest review of the Chevrolet Corvette.

I love this car, it's incredible! I was fortunate enough to have a ride in a RHD C8 here in the UK and I was smiling for the rest of the day.
I'm into cars and daily an 89 IROC-Z 5.7 TPI, my only criticism would be that getting out of my old school V8 and then experiencing the C8 it felt a bit like a computer simulator and seemed to loose a bit of the raw experience. Although I guess anything modern would be the same, perhaps a C6 would be a good compromise.

Great review John. I've watched Speed phenom for years here on YT and he was one of the early recipients of the C8 and as far as I know tracked his more than any other UA-camr that I know of and it did not miss a beat. As for the understeer I'm pretty sure Chevrolet have a front wheel alignment setting they recommend for track days that dials most of that out.

WHY cant a Corvette just be a Corvette... Why does it always have to be something it isnt. For my ENTIRE LIFE, I have been told every Corvette model is a "bargain supercar" and then it turns out to be exactly NOT a Ferrari at half price. Imagine if Corvette could just ONCE make a car that matches the hype.
NONE of the factory's claimed numbers are possible to achieve in reality.

Yeah, thats exactly it, dude... The sub 3 seconds Corvette CLAIMS. But the car wont do it. It has never done it. The onboard computers make all sorts of allowances to make it happen... But if you use external telemetry, you will see the numbers are around 3.6 - 4.2 Corvette has made a car that LIES to its owner.

Exactly. When this car was tested by TopGear over in England... It was a fully specced out Z51 race package priced at over 120 000 British pounds. And they explained this 0-60 of "less than 2.9 seconds" They said in reality.... Its closer to 4.2
Which is a HUGE difference. And then they explained how they do it. First its 0-62. Because thats 100 kilometers an hour. So they shave off a couple of tenths by only measuring 0-60. And then they have that 1 foot rollout.... But there is no standard for that. Everybody does their own thing. Some start the car 1 foot before the timer so the car is already moving when the timer starts, others have a FULL car length. So its just a wild guess now.
But the amazing thing is.... That the on-board Corvette display tells you that you did 2.9, even as low as 2.7 and stuff... When in reality you are doing anything from 3.6 to over 4.
So Corvette.... Has made a car that LIES to its owner to make them feel good about their life choices...
I mean... IMAGINE if Porsche, Lambo, Mclaren had made a car that LIES to its owner. OMG they would be the laughing stock of the industry. For decades. They would never be able to live that down.
But its american. So we cant point and laugh. We kinda just have to roll with it and write it off as a "cultural thing" otherwise were "anti-american" and evil.
Christ, what a time to be alive.

GM stopped producing an icon, a classic that has been manufactured since 1953, that is, a car with its own identity to manufacture what now? A bizarre copy of LaFerrari. This is unfortunate. The Chevrolet Corvette died. Since GM likes to copy Ferrari, GM could copy the Ferrari Omologata or Ferrari Roma and thus re-manufacture the Classic Corvette with an engine in the front as it always has been. Mid-engine Corvette is the same as a front-engined Porsche 911, in other words, ridiculous.

    • @MichaelNiteRealEstate
      @MichaelNiteRealEstate Рік тому +4

you're too emotional. This is a engineering masterpiece for so many objective and subjective reasons. its superior to the classic FR layout (ive owned multiple generations c4 thru c7) I too wish they would keep doing the front engine cars along side the ME but then life is never fair. Who knows, if the model becomes its own brand the opportunities are abundant. There is some real genuine and intelligent design and engineering going on with this C8 platform that past platforms lacked. The world keeps growing and so there is plenty of markets around the world beyond North America that a Corvette brand could be a successful one in. Imagine Corvette CUVs, and front engine coupes, convertibles and then mid engine sportscars and occasional hypercar models on the high end. Possibilities.... for growth and progress dude. These are machines, not people, or public figures, dont treat it like a religion... fan clubs with fanboys purists tend to get stuck in the past. Lets all cheers with beers to fun cars and good times.

@@MichaelNiteRealEstate I'm not stuck in the past. I just believe there is room for everyone. There was no need for GM to do away with the traditional front-engine model.
