Mid-engine, low price, plenty of power. Yes, this car was designed to understeer on purpose. There will be so many people overdriving their ability in this car. If it was setup for track use, half of them would be in the hedge from power-on oversteer, or lift-off/snap oversteer. They'll probably come out later with a track package that fits a correctly tuned rear diff, and a more focused track mode.
@@coinbbq0527 That's not what I'm saying. They made it handle safely for all the people trying to drive at the limit, who have not right to be driving that way.
@@coinbbq0527 Tuned in understeer will ultimately make the car slower on a track but it also makes it more stable and easier to drive. So for street use with the average joe, it makes perfect sense.
understeer on roads can be dangerous, but I get your point for sure.. It might make people hold off on cornering if they feel like they are going to go into the guardrail... Or is it too late by then and you are in the guardrail? as soon as it starts sliding you hit the brakes, which in turn takes away from the cornering ability and you lose all traction... I guess you could learn to drift around all corners lol
Willing to bet that understeer is 100% intentional to keep the typical corvette buyer out of the morgue. I would prefer it err on the side of oversteer, but the attorneys seem to prefer understeer. Mid engine / RWD cars have a tendency to give you snap oversteer, which is a blast, if you have fast hands....and will kill you if you don’t. (I know I’m not telling you anything you don’t already know).
Chevy even said the understeer was intentionally built in because most buyers will never have driven a mid-engine car prior to owning one, and they wanted the performance to be safely approachable for those new to the drivetrain set up. It was also to not alienate their core base of buyers who likely wouldn't be familiar with the twitchy/ snap oversteer nature of a mid-engine car. Future performance models will rectify the problem without question.
@@MrCarCrazy Yeah, they even have a recommended track alignment setting for the car to eliminate some of the understeer. They say you can have it done at the dealership prior to taking delivery.
I find more dangerous to understeer than over do it. You can hit things right with the front or go flying though a cliff, or hitting another car in a front accident. Tell me how oversteer is more dangerous than that

So, I happened to surprise my wife with a 2022 C8 LT2 with the Z51 package. We both had corvettes when we first met in our twenties. So, it was a sentimental purchase. I've been a car enthusiast since I was a teen. Had muscle cars, then bought my first vette 1962 at 21. It was semi customized, and it was and still is beautiful. It was a great feel to own, just not a great drive. but a head turner! So, she took delivery of the C8 in March of 2022. She now has 11k miles on it (two long road trips attributed to half that mileage). She has no hesitation pushing the envelope with it. We do track it locally and even get it on a drag strip with some of the muscle cars. I am not a typical collector as we own them to use and really enjoy them. We've had several other corvettes, and the C8 is impressive as its unlike any of the previous generations. The mid engine dual 8 speed clutch and much more chevy implemented changed the game for the corvette. Now it's a far cry from the two Ferrari's. A 2020 F8 Tributo & 2019 Ferrari 488 GTB! You're also talking about a hugh sticker price difference. We have 7 adult children and our 5th grandchild due soon, but there is still room for another car. I always wanted a Z06, so I have one on order, but a 2023 delivery is questionable. The vettes are just in my blood, but lean towards the Italian super cars.
Great shots of the understeer! Many reviewers talk about how cars handle, but rarely do they demonstrate the behavior they're describing or its magnitude. Good job!
I had placed my deposit until I realized it only came w flappy paddle shifters and I told the salesman I no longer wanted the car, he couldn't believe it. when I saw this vid I almost lost it laughing.
The Z06 will have a 8-9k rpm DOHC screamer that you guys are looking for and they will fix the understeer problem. The C8 base is the Cars and Coffee boomer cruising spec. What you guys want is the Z06 then you will want the ZR1 then Zora. But you'll be talking $100k - $150k USD for those and not the $60k USD starting base. Ferrari just came out with the Stradale starting at $650k USD which is a 1000 hp hybrid entry level hyper car. Zora will be 1000 hp hybrid with similar hyper car performance but ~ $150k so will be quite impressive.
I thought the same, the review is fair and i can understand the critic about the understeering but as you say this is the car for the masses and lots of corvette owners coming from the C7 are not used to a middle motor, same for a lot of people who never drove anything with that power. If you want a good track car the Z06 was always one of the best options in the line.
The ZORA will not be a $150k car (the ZR1 maybe will start around there). If it comes in anywhere sub $300k it will be the hypercar bargain of the century.
Even the Z06 is rumored at this point. There might not even be a ZR1. The "if" was also apparent during the previous generation. With that said, getting a Z06 might be the one to have if there are not any cooling issues like there were in the previous generation.
@@BleedForTheWorld I think it doesnt really matter if the next higher model is called Z06 or not but it would make sense if they keep the name. We do know it will come with a 5.5L V8 with a flat plane crank and probably active aero as an additional package. And if you really want to drive a Z51 on the track you can always run a more aggresive alignement, Randy tested one with much more negative camber and the understeer was almost gone.
Now all manufacturers are doing this: they are leaving things on the table to make refresh every years. They knew exactly what they were doing with that understeer, which will either be “fixed” next year or in the Z06. Toyota is doing the same thing with the Supra....
1betterthanyou1 you’re right, however they used to wait for mid cycle refresh to do that. The supra is a good example, before they would have waited a few years before releasing such an update. In this case alignement and rear sway bar is probably all that’s needed to cut that understeer.

Wow, you all saying American cars don't handle...I mean it sounds funny but the Corvette is the only reason that all the nice cars now have magnetic suspension. There's this strange idea that understeer is safer than oversteer. You have no chance recovering from understeer at a certain speed but oversteer is savable. And I think Boomers getting Corvettes still know they are getting a Corvette
motosonic for you maybe that applies and thats your opinion. The general consensus for that particular corvette would be a “understeer” besides Car manufacturers tend to set their default to a bit “understeer” and alot of reviewers and enthusiast knew about that. Sure, a few people here “know” oversteer are savable and “experts” with their savable oversteer but the point of my comment would be for normal people and casual old people and boomers alike.
@@motormusique for the average person its easier to recover from an understeer (let off the throttle) than it is to recover from an oversteer. In fact the instinctual response of applying the brakes is what turns an oversteer into a spin.
motosonic any evidence to support your bold claim? It doesnt mean that traction control dont exist back then, it means a boomer is good driver. Its like this “it doesnt mean you are black, doesnt mean that youre not racist” see the point? If you mean “younger people” like teens but, when the boomers was about the same age as what you said “younger people” its the same or maybe worse. You know, most car enthusiast lingers to nostalgia, that back then cars are much better and they would defend that nostalgia to the hilt. So unless you do have a concrete evidence of what you saying, im just gonna say the level would be the same.
@@TristanSilverwood That's not a valid argument, Any American V8 will be a screamer with a flat plane crank. See: Mustang GT350. But with a flat plane crank you sacrifice torque. See: Mustang GT350. GM didn't want to sacrifice torque in their bread and butter Corvette, hence a standard cross plane crank. But be aware that their race car, the C8.R, DOES use a flat plane crank and revs unbelievably high, and sounds absolutely vicious. See here: ua-cam.com/video/mCElwtx05pU/v-deo.html That engine, uncorked for street use, will be in the upcoming C8 Z06 with somewhere between 600-700 HP and a 9k RPM redline. I think people forget that the current C8 is just the BASE MODEL Corvette.
I got a solution to the oversteer problem. It’s either slow down (or not press on the gas pedal), or the manufacturer should remake the vehicle with the rear wheels turning the exact degree the front wheels are (although I disagree on doing so since it’s meant for racing often rather than any other purpose) due to the short length and less weight. Blind spots? Small cameras can be added so the panel can show where you want to look at (with the manufacturer deciding to so).
The biggest letdown of the C8 is the factory wheel designs. At times though, I actually like the C7 better. I feel a cure for that coming though in the form of the C8 Z06 with flat plane crank V8, and sure to be improved steering and suspension tuning. That is going to be the sweet spot for sure. Great review guys.
Aaaah, the Canadian perspective...been waiting for this. :) So, the only objective criticism you guys shared are 1) Tremendous under steer and 2) Poor rearward visibility due to targa-top and the rear-view mirror. Otherwise, the remaining dings are all subjective. Which, is fine because we all have our preferences. I would love to see you guys get some track time with the car to see if the understeer issue can be tuned out via suspension adjustments (if adjustments are possible on the car). Good stuff, love your guys' channel!

You guys should borrow another, and take it to a Chevrolet dealership and have them do the track suspension alignment to it... that dials out all of the understeer.

I’m 68, mine’s set up for the track. Not all retirees are slow, though I agree most are. The Z06 will make the Brit happy, he can rev it to his heart’s content for a fraction of the price of a euro super car. Oh, and changing the alignment is a cheap fix.
So you’re saying that to make the car handle well they have to make it handle shit? You can just say it still handles bad😂
@@coinbbq0527 That's not what I'm saying. They made it handle safely for all the people trying to drive at the limit, who have not right to be driving that way.
100% agree.
Yeah I think that might be true, but it is pretty sad if that's the case, because it really shouldn't understeer as bad as it does.
Litemix great info! I don’t follow GM products much at all, but that seems plausible.
Tell me how oversteer is more dangerous than that
Imagine driving so many exotic cars that a V8 feels wrong
The V8 feels wrong due to the lack of rpms, most exotics that have the c8 vibe, rev to at least 8000, the poor thing only revs to what, 6500?
@@losersquadhd1234 pushrod engine = low rpm. Check out the c8r, chevys c8 race car version. They are developing a flat plane crank for other higher up models as well, and the rpm will be higher. having a v8 doesn't mean low rpms
@@trashbandit2449 Actually the LT2 has 6600rpm redline because the auto cylinder shut off mechanism was not durable enough above 6600rpm to meet GM's reliability requirements(so so engineering😣) but if the engineering had been better a 7500rpm redline could have been possible(with a few relatively inexpensive upgrades, except for a better auto cylinder shut off mechanism, always cheaper to do it right the first time). Ferrari: Hold my beer
488 Spyder: Am i a joke to you?
Good job!

Beni Stingray agreed. MANY corvette owners are retired boomers who don’t drive their car at 10/10ths. Just wait for the ZO6 👍
Toyota is doing the same thing with the Supra....
yeppp
@1betterthanyou1 they said it was to counter oversteer that would possibly kick out because of the added weight
There is a track alignment they offer
1betterthanyou1 you’re right, however they used to wait for mid cycle refresh to do that. The supra is a good example, before they would have waited a few years before releasing such an update. In this case alignement and rear sway bar is probably all that’s needed to cut that understeer.

Supposedly the Z06 is supposed to rev a lot higher. It probably won’t have as much understeer either
I guess the “understeer” setting would be for the normies, to make the car “safer” and sellable to the boomers.
Son what Boomers probably know how to drive better than younger people today because they grew up with cars without any traction control
motosonic any evidence to support your bold claim? It doesnt mean that traction control dont exist back then, it means a boomer is good driver. Its like this “it doesnt mean you are black, doesnt mean that youre not racist” see the point? If you mean “younger people” like teens but, when the boomers was about the same age as what you said “younger people” its the same or maybe worse. You know, most car enthusiast lingers to nostalgia, that back then cars are much better and they would defend that nostalgia to the hilt. So unless you do have a concrete evidence of what you saying, im just gonna say the level would be the same.
The low engine revs with the DCT makes it seem neutered to me, I expect a car like that to scream but it just kinda groans.
It’s an American v8, not an Italian one
@@TristanSilverwood That's not a valid argument, Any American V8 will be a screamer with a flat plane crank. See: Mustang GT350. But with a flat plane crank you sacrifice torque. See: Mustang GT350. GM didn't want to sacrifice torque in their bread and butter Corvette, hence a standard cross plane crank. The understeer was an important choice that GM made. It's much easier to control than oversteer.
Great review as always...unfortunate about the understeer. I'm curious now to see how exactly the Z06 will perform.

Can't wait to see them drive the new C8 Zo6. It's a masterpiece of engineering. Flat plane crank, naturally aspirated most powerful production car engine right now. 0-60 2.6 and sounds amazing. They better wear their white pants.
gentlemen, respect the car as it is desiged and built. you can't find a car looks and performed this well for great price. I love all cars
The understeer was intentional by GM. A little camber adjustment fixes that issue.
"but there's no manual transmissioonnnnn" whine whine whine
It's the Performance Car Bargain of the Decade.
You nailed it on the mirror. I have that in my CTS-V as an option but hate it. Always leave it in regular mirror mode.
I love these reviews. I could watch them for hours. Thanks for a perfect review on the C8. Also, go get one because they are fantastic. Z06 gonna have a lot of expectations to live up to given the success of the LT3
Thought a super car was based on performance not the looks. Lol. 2019 zr1 is a super car.
sure, then just don't call it supercar. call it looky car. and it's fast ... enough, to not be embarrassing, women won't know or care about the difference, and I won't either. I´d kill myself with the supercar.
I still love that I know every single freaking road that they are on LOL
Cacao Scotti In Canada
@Cacao Scotti West of the GTA. There are so many amazing borderline country roads that are perfectly paved. These are basically five minutes away from me
Bell School Line looks like on the one road
cliche corner? lol
Wats the name of the street I live in gta and would like to check them out?
Corrects him “what is happening?????!!” 😂😂😂😂😂
When he said Camaro instead of CORVETTE!!!
Lets see if I go around a corner at 30 miles an hour faster than the speed limit the car will understeer, WOW these guys are BRILLANT.
I am 65, been going to the tracks buttonwillow and willow springs for the last 2 plus years, no prior experience, a friend told me about it, taking zo6, gt350 and gt350r for 35 plus track days
The experience with manual is the bomb on the shelbys, auto on the z06 doesnt compare
I believe if the average corvette buyer knew about taking their car to the track, and going as all out as you can tolerate, it would definitely change their buying habits
Thanks
