Method is the asshats who won’t answer you until you call them by their character name, make you maintain consistency in fucking _hair and makeup_ (yeah, we’re talking period appropriate garments and hairstyles in the hair and makeup dept so as not to break immersion, the twats) and even assign you a different name that fits somewhere into their character’s imagined past life.....

      My Mum was British and I was born here, in NY.. I learned to sound American bc the kids at school would have not been able to understand me.. I think British tho, and sometimes Americans cannot get me.. it can be fun at times, but also can often be frustrating. I really don’t think many Americans realize how much they make assumptions and stereotype ppl like me and others to be just like them or opposed to them.. never assume and listen up more is the key.. everyone is unique if they let themselves be.

    It can be hard to change accents. I know this from experience, I agree with you girl. It's like me as an American born doing a Scottish accent (hard accent to do) when I get into character it is so easy once you get the gist. It's almost like driving a car but with your voice. (I know bad analogy) but it is kind of trying to tune into it adjusting it and Making it right it is hard to turn it "off". Or change your dialect at times once you are used to it. this is coming coming someone who was in speech therapy for 10 years because I had a really think korean accent because my Korean grandmother's accent I picked up. It has stuck with me for so long. People now hear me speak and think I was a new yorker because of my accent I had picked up from a speech therapist who is from New York. So I understand the nature of accents can be tough.

    Totally makes sense I know when I was learning french and speaking it a lot with my mom who grew up there she can pick up the phone and speak either language with no hesitation but the first 5-20 mins of me speaking french is forced and sounds weird since you use different parts of your mouth than you normally do. I would always have trouble getting back into my french mouth feel if I took more than a 20 min break from speaking french like eating lunch or watching a UA-cam video, my mouth would just go back to normal.

  • @speeeee35
    @speeeee35 6 років тому +8

    Makes sense. I noticed Cara Delivigne (Excuse the spelling, lol; I mean the pretty English model/sometimes actress with the big eyebrows lol) did this while filming Paper Towns, where her character was from Florida. Even when she was on red carpets for other projects and whatnot. I'm sure a lot of them do this, she just stuck out in my mind bc it's rare you see someone do it even when they're not on set (and I think Camilla here only does it while on set, if I understood what she said correctly).
    Anyway, it's always amazing how much better Brits (and any other English-speaking country besides the USA) do an American accent than Americans doing an English accent (etc.). I never really thought about why, but then, at some point, I realized this is because they grew up hearing Americans on TV and in movies, all along, while Americans, *ESPECIALLY* before the internet (very early 00s) and smartphones (late 00s) got super big where everyone had them (which for the internet was in the VERY early 00s, that's when *everyone* had the internet. Cause I remember in 3rd grade when I first got "email" (this was before AOL even, when the internet had really no purpose besides chat rooms and message boards. There was no instant messaging, and if you clicked a webpage, it would take so long to load that you'd want to die, so most companies either didn't even have them, or had them, but it would just be like a logo, and some contact info, and nothing else, when you went to it lol) literally not one single other person in my class had internet besides me lol). Before that, I'd never seen a British show........... and VERY few British movies (Love Actually is the only one I can think of from back then, and that was in late 2001, *earliest*, cause he talks about 9/11 at the start. So it makes sense that people who've heard something, and often and for long periods at a time (like a film), since childhood would be better able to impersonate it, with or without lessons, than someone who only heard an accent in drips and drabs until they were older and started watching British shows on Netflix (I still use the subtitles, though, mainly cause I don't want to miss anything hahaha cause sometimes they'll say one British word that isn't used in American-English, and I'll start thinking of it or go to look it up, and then miss the second half of the sentence lol). Ok, well this is much longer than I intended (I wrote the bit beneath before I finished this part, cause it referred to the beginning of the paragraph hahaha, same with the "The Office" part) but language, accents, regional diction, etc., are honestly my passion, so I could talk about this all day.
    ---
    And, since I know Brits are the saltiest people on the internet, I'll include this post-disclaimer lol and say that I am fully aware that y'all have your own tv shows in the UK... I'm just saying, you'd get a lot of our shows from Hollywood on regular TV, but we've NEVER gotten one of your shows, like the exact same show & they just mailed the episodes over here, EVER..... EVEN NOW. So we didn't grow up hearing your accent in the same way that you did ours. They ALWAYS make an American version because of our vastly different humor styles...... like with The (British) Office* vs. our version. Obviously we're two different countries, not to mention England is SMALLER THAN FLORIDA, which isn't even in our top 3 biggest states, so they can have more specific types of humor and all or most of the people watching will have a similar sense of humor, at least so they can enjoy it. In America, you have to try and make, basically, an entire continent's worth of people laugh at the same joke, so it makes sense that they'd go the more silly "everyone has to at least giggle" route in the beginning especially, before they had a set fanbase. I am not at all implying that all of you grow up watching only American TV. I was only saying that while you all heard forms of the American accent, especially in the movies, since you were tiny children, we'd only heard it if our shows had an English character (probably played by an American LOL jk), if someone was impersonating an English accent, or, obviously, when seeing musicians or others who got fame in "the states" (.... as you guys would say hahaha you know nobody in America says that right? Unless if they pick it up cause they've seen so many Brits saying it online LOL.... Not saying you should stop - I love it haha - just curious if you thought we also said it haha) speaking or doing an interview.
    ---
    *There are a lot of Americans, especially when it was first really popular in the USA, who'd say they liked English "The Office" better, and remember - this was when they'd have had to ordered it on DVD to see the British version bc Netflix, as it is now, wasn't a thing yet......... But yeah, so, not only are they pretentious and super annoying, but the large majority of them are also totally FULL OF SH*T, just being an arts&entertainment-snob, and honestly, probably didn't watch it at all, or more than one or two episodes. I watched it, and I couldn't understand it without subtitles- and I'm a NYer so a) My accent hasn't changed THAT much since my ancestors came over from Ireland, dropping "R's" and all that, plus like, our accent is just wild lol. Any non-NYer, even a Brit, would have to take lessons to do a NY accent properly. PLUS I grew up hearing every accent you could ever imagine on a daily basis so, usually I can understand anyone who's even sorta speaking English lol. But even more than that, the sense of humor is just so British, and why would someone like something they can't relate to better than something they CAN relate to? It was great, don't get me wrong, but OBVIOUSLY I understand and find more humor in the American version, as I'm an American! And I swear to god, if any American responds to this explaining why they like the British version better, I'll hunt you down and cut off all your hair, because OBVIOUSLY I don't mean everyone, and SOMEONE'S gotta be in the small minority.)

    For everyone asking about her real accent - there’s a clip in one of the blooper reels for Grey’s where her and Kevin McKidd do a whole scene in their normal accents. It’s brilliant.

    I remember seeing her I don't know if this was before she joined Gray's anatomy but she was on the lifetime movie about Prince William and Kate Middleton she played Kate Middleton and then I remember seeing her on Gray's anatomy and remember she looks very familiar and then it clicked and I was like oh ok.. and I think a lot of actors who do the American accent will keep it even when they're not rolling because it's hard for them to go back and forth some can do it like that..
