He had a small role in "Hawaii" as Julie Andrews' father and played a number of small character roles. Stapleton was a character actress on stage who played parts in a number of Broadway musicals, notably as Judy Holidays sister(?) and owner of the answering service in "Bells are Ringing," which she repeated in the film.
I recall that in AITF's first season, Stapleton's _Edith_ character -- although ditzy -- tended to be unsmiling and not as joyful (at least in the episodes I was able to catch). I'm not sure of what caused the change to what we see in the subsequent seasons, but it makes sense that a happily optimistic Edith would work as a great counterpoint to Archie's brooding displeasure.
Archie had a cartoon face. Some of his expressions were funnier than the punchlines of the jokes. He would just narrow his eyes a certain way, and it was hilarious. Carroll O’Connor was such a gifted actor.
ABC is having an Alls in the Family and the Jeffersons live reboot episode tomorrow 8-10pm on ABC tonight May 22, 2019 w Woody Harrelson, Jamie Foxx, Wanda Sykes, Marissa Tomei and others. Should be fun!

Actually, the term, "Politically Correct" WAS a Term back then, but only in China, and the term "Politically Correct" was first used by Mao Tse Tung, the Leader of the Chinese Communist Party from 1949 until his death in 1976.
Jean Stapleton (Edith Bunker) and Carroll O'Connor (Archie Bunker) are probably the two greatest TV characters of all time. Their acting was off the charts greatness! In real life Carroll O'Connor was as liberal as you can get. Which makes his performance as Archie Bunker absolutely legendary. Now can you get me a beer---eeer---eeer?
All in The Family is the funniest tv comedy series ever produced. Every single subject was discussed and debated while making millions laugh. From the color of skin to religion, from being single to being married, from peace to war, nationalities, Muslims, Mafia, Jews, Christians and so on. This show was 30 years ahead of everything else!! Brilliantly written and fabulously acted by all members of the cast. The best comedy bar none.
.....he was....he just took a lot of convoluted twists and turns explaining himself with great malapropisms and wild explanations, especially when it came to the Bible....
+Mark Kalfahs: Archie Bunker was no more right than the others in their learned knowledge views of reality. 4 they all had strong points in their thinking + character personalities. +Marie Smith: + strange as it is, Archie, nor any other could imagine, nor do I feel would have wanted Edith any other way. 4 her stressors were few + she couldn't step outside of her safety zone. Which was a relaxing change for the others.
In one episode, after Mike & Gloria had moved into the Jefferson house next door to Archie, the Meathead comes over wearing only a bathrobe. Archie asks him if he was moving back in or only paying a short visit in his Polish tuxedo. 😂 I swear I laughed for a f’ing week. 😂
I don't know if Donald Trump is the Archie Bunker of the 21st century. Donald would have to ACTUALLY RIDE on the New York City subway BEFORE he badmouths it. LOL
Archie was a conservative Republican. He loved Nixon and hated Carter. The show is on when I was a kid. I used to have an Archie Bunker for President T-shirt! I wish I had that shirt today.
Great show ,me and my ex wife used to watch the show and she told me that Archie acted just like her real father, never met the man so I didn't know lmao
What’s wrong with subway farts? It’ll give you plenty of space while you play a rousing game of WTF is that? With all of the freaks getting on and off the train in the Village, it’s a fun game! ....Or is that just me who does that.....?😆
This was hilarious Archie : I was pressed up against the guy and all of a sudden he started talking to his daughter bedith:,Whats wrong with that ? Archie : she wasn’t there , Archie then the bum behind me had beans for lunch . Edith : how did you know that Archie I could tell by the way he smiled the audience laughed so hard
Subways in new York.wow half the people having a bean lunch and the smell would make people gag and hold their noses and half of them when you would look at them would smile after a big ripper.
He starts talking to his daughter. _Well what's the matter with that?_ She wasn't there. He was obviously a time traveler using a bluetooth earpiece and iPhone.
He could do it and he did do it! In the episode where Mike gives $200 to the McGovern presidential campaign, Archie gives him such a hard time about that he goes to work at a gas station on the side until he earned enough to pay Archie $200. He only makes it to $150 before fessing up that that's what he's been doing nights. So he could've done it all along, he just chose not to.

Brandon Salvati Other than Seinfeld? You can't possibly be serious! Seinfeld was Good, but can't even come close to this. It's sort of like All in the family was the Beatles, and Seinfeld was the Stones. ..

It makes you want to watch an episode two or more times because there are subtle jokes you missed the first time. They were so great. Such gifted actors!
Mr. O'Conner was so good at his acting he's remembered for Archie.....he was a brilliant actor in many other roles
Chief gilepsie he played the opposite of archie bunker. He also played a general in kellys heros.

He was hands down the best actor.
The expression on Edith's face when she says how did you know that is priceless 😄
They're trying not to crack up while delivering the line

"I Could Tell By The Way He Smiled At Me"!! A classic punch line!!
Every show was a classic...best show ever
This show and many others of the 70's had folks laughing in tears!😂
Best sitcom hands down

One of the funniest most cutting edge shows ever.
I agree completely! Nothing on TV before or after it was quite like All In The Family!
Not "one of". But rather, "THE" funniest and most cutting edge show in the history of American Television.
There. I said it.

Raymond Barrey I still love it at 57.
All in the family is one of my favorite shows to still today
This was one of my favorite episodes. Another one was where Archie explained how he'd stop planes from being hijacked.
Yep!
The expression on Edith's face when she says "how did you know that?" is pure gold
"The bum behind me had beans for lunch." "How did you know that, Archie?" LMAO!

I loved this show
The greatest television comedy ever.
Best Sitcom of all time
You tell them Archie, political correctness was not even a word when this was filmed.
You speak the truth.

I about pissed my pants laughing 😅
NewYork must be the only city in the world with a skid row that moves all over town! Archie’s opinion of the subway.
Bobby Lee...oh hell yes! Great description of the New York subways!
Love this show. Very popular in my family. Meathead was always the inept son in law in Archie's eyes.
Edith looked like she wanted to laugh when Archie said the bum behind me had beans for lunch. 🤪🤪🤪
Edith Dingbat Bunker nearly lost it trying to stifle a laugh.
He was brilliant
Can you imagine the people now days watching "All in the Family and the Jeffersons"....
They would have a cow!!! 😂😂😂
Damn I needed a good laugh right now and I'll be damned if this didn't do it 😂 My hero Archie Bunker

Archie should have run for President when he had the chance.
There used to be bumper stickers all over the country in the 70s, ARCHIE BUNKER FOR PRESIDENT! I kid you not!!
Trump beat him to it
garylobo3 I remember seeing t-shirts with that slogan
In an enclosed space such as a subway, i can see how that would be something to contend with.
Solid Gold
Love Archie
Thanks for the videos 🎀🎀🎀🎀🎀🐯🐯
I love it!! I love it!!
Jean Stapleton was a wonderful actress very underrated
Did Archie ever have a good work day? 🤣
At the end of this episode Archie paid for meatheads operation
Well....he's the only meathead ya got..(touching moment)*
The happiest one smiling is usually the the one who did it
I love it when Archie says “I got a seat on the subway ten years ago when it caught fire and everybody run like hell”. That’s in another episode lol

Trump is the Archie of the 21st century . If Archie was around today he would be wearing a MAGA hat and supporting T 100%

Mike is pure moocher.
What was the title of this Episode?
So funny
It would have been funnier if he said farted. I think the word fart was banned at the time this episode was first "aired."
It is funnier when it is not said. That was a key element of older comedy.

Subway didn't exist back then.
How do you know it was beans it could have been cabbage or tacos
Funny scene, especially Edith's "How did you know that" ... but what's been edited out here when Mike sits on the sofa? There's clearly a cut there.
Edited for continuity on the appendix topic... I wasn't going to upload the entire episode.
