    Refurbished 5SIi, $1400. Lumix 50/1.8. Apple Silicon M1 (no need for outdated RAW codecs or clunky external drives). DaVinci free version. It's a wonderful time to be a filmmaker.

    2:00 - SteadyShot Active is a form of electronic stabilization. I know you know this, but it makes it even worse for Sony ... why? Try recording handheld like that with some motion blur, like in a proper movie. The 180 degree shutter angle rule with an ND filter for example. Enable SteadyShot Active; you will see artifacts in the motion blur where the electronic stabilization has shifted the frame. Meanwhile, the Lumix (even with just IBIS on only and no EIS) is far more stable, and IBIS only will not cause artifacts in motion blur (aside from normal shakes). Sony was designed for photography first, video second. The E-mount is not large enough to have the sensor shift far enough, so Sony depends on EIS in handheld video, which is pretty bad for serious video. Most Sony shooters don't even use ND filters, they can't tell me how many stops an ND64 is, they don't know their f-stop chart in 1/3rd increments, that is incredibly amatuerish. EIS is fine for a GoPro, but should generally be avoided for professional shooting. It's true that most cinema cameras don't have IBIS as well, but at least IBIS can allow you to do a lot handheld, without having to worry about artifacts in your motion blur. I've used Panasonic for 10 years. I would never use Sony, no matter how popular it is. There's no excuse not to have shutter angle for example, which can easily be implemented in software, but we know how Sony is with firmware updates. Thanks for the comparison. Choose Lumix over Sony. Be smart, learn your equipment :)

      @@changeguys Both of these cameras are excellent. It really depends on what you plan to do. I manual focus all the time, I've gotten good at it. I was DOP and focus puller on a 4 day short film set, I rarely missed. I've manually focused for 10 years. The S5 IIX is probably like 90% as good as Sony at video autofocus for most things. Panasonic still has more latency in HDMI than Sony, but in other ways, I think the S5 IIX is the better camera overall. You can reduce noise reduction on all Panasonic cameras to a minimal amount, no you don't need a Sony Burano for $25,000 for that "special" feature, you can do it on pretty much any Panasonic. This means LongGOP and All-I become practical choices, as you get a decent noise pattern for Neat Video to build a noise profile with, eliminating the need to use ProRes for an extra half stop or so of details in the shadows after noise reduction in post (just get exposure and white balance close to correct in camera). Sony uses heavy internal noise reduction, the S5 IIX has dual native ISO and is plenty good in low light, probably around 80% as good as the Sony. If one lights their scenes even with rudimentary lighting, any camera can be used. It also depends on lenses. Sony has more faster primes to choose from (yet they suffer from more focus breathing than Panasonic, and digital cropping for focus breathing compensation option on Sony will be noticeable if using 180 degree shutter angle). Panasonic does have a nice series of f/1.8 primes (18, 24, 35, 50, 85) but they don't really have anything faster unless you look into Sigma. Finally, Panasonic has better stabilization than Sony because the mount is larger. Sony E-mount is too small, the system will never have good physical stabilization and depends on EIS. Sony is a photography system with video as an after thought, while Panasonic (for the price) always has better video features. I personally would go with the Panasonic. I don't care how popular Sony is, I thoroughly enjoy Panasonic as I'm primarily a videographer. However, Sony may be better considering specific use cases.

    The S5iiX's Boost I.S. is NOT intended for tripod moves. It is meant to emulate a locked-off shot (no panning/tilting), if you do try tripod moves Boost I.S. will give you jerky rubber-bandey moves as it tries to keep the shot still and then runs out of compensation range.

    • @MatthiasDangl
      @MatthiasDangl  5 місяців тому +5

      In practice, the Boost I. S. really improved my tripod-like camera movements. Especially when performing them at a consistant speed.
      But I just opened up the S5 IIX manual and you're right!
      "Increase the effectiveness of the image stabilizer during video recording. This effect can help provide a stable composition when you want to perform recording from a fixed perspective."

    This comparison between the lenses is disingenious. Lumix lens options are simply cheaper because you get lesser build quality and performance. Comparing a 16mm f4 (lumix) to a 16mm 2.8 (Sony) is like saying a Lexus is better than buying a Benz because you "save money". You save money because your cheaping out on performance. Sony glass is known to be better than Sigma and Panny glass in terms of dof, sharpness, chromatic abberation and autofocus noise and speed. The only good thing about panny right now is the usability and the 6k sensor which is ironically made by Sony.

If I invest in apsc lens, then I have no use for photo mode. But if all my lens are for full frame, the focal length is not comfortable on apsc. That is the main issue for camera like a7IV, s5 II. Fairly disappointed by the super biased comparaison here. I have both cameras and love the Lumix for what it does better than my A7SIII (stabilization, 6k open gate, general photography...) but I also hate as painful it is to get it to focus on the correct subject, or the fact that the cropping is so agressive.. I get that Panasonic is helping your career, but just the fact that you minimized the extreme difference in low light capabilities is terrible. I wanted to enjoy the comparaison but I feel sad for the folks that will believe you and be fairly disappointed by the shortcomings of the Lumix.

The S5ii seems to have much better stabilization, better view screen and perhaps more video features for about 800.00 less here in Canada (body only). Sony has greater lens choice, higher MP sensor for photography etc. it sounds like the Sony may have more solid build quality - not sure about that one. Still not sure which way to go for a camera to be used as a hybrid camera.

    And think of all the video analysis features you get with the LUMIX!!!! Syncro Scan, waveforms, Luminous spot meter, shutter angle. The S-5 is so much more video oriented. Plus you can save time by recording your favorite LUT in camera while shooting LOG. And Pro Res is a dream for grading in fCP. Colors always looked weird to me on Sony, but you're 100% right, colors on the Panasonic are much more natural looking, plus you can shoot in C4K.

    Some of your comparisons were wrong… When it comes to low light nothing can touch the a7s3. The only thing that the Lumix does better than the Sony is stabilization. I work in da Vinci resolve so as far as colors go I can make them look anyway I want. So that’s not an issue.
    Lumix is also very plastic feeling while the Sony feels much more solid.
    And auto focus… The Lumix can’t even come close to the Sony. Sony has the best auto focus of all mirror cameras.

      The Lumix colors match my preferred color look better than the Sony. I have to tweak a lot on the Sony, and the more I tweak the longer it takes and the more it impacts the quality. But definitely depends on your style!

      The choice of camera must be made based on needs... for me 6K is fantastic (something I often see underestimated) also because the file doesn't weigh down the computer and can be managed like a 4K. For brightness I always try to stay within ISO 6400 which is more than enough for me. We'll see autofocus in the new firmware update... but I almost always use manual focus and I would also use it with the Sony which if it's even better you can never be guaranteed that you won't make mistakes.

    3 years now and the A7SIII is still the best camera in the market to me when it comes to filmmaking, especially in low light. Not giving a point in low light for a7SIII destroyed the whole comparison here. S5 IIX is a solid camera but when it comes to video it still lags behind and no amount of firmware updates would solve that. It's better compared to A7iv than A7SIII as both are more hybrid than video-centric.

    • @Kickboxritter
      @Kickboxritter 5 місяців тому +23

      a7siii has such a aggressive internal noise reduction that it's high iso footage just looks mushy. also many people complain the second base iso at 12.800 is way to high that many need to compensate with adding ND filters. but glad the a7siii is the best camera for you.

    • @Bo_Hazem
      @Bo_Hazem 5 місяців тому +3

      @@Kickboxritter Valid points. I happen to shoot in HLG (not HLG3) which tends to have less noise reduction internally but more visible noise but sharper details. Why not SLog3? It's safer for wildlife filmmaking and has better shadow recovery so you only worry about highlights and even when the 2nd base ISO is 2,000 it looks clean at 12,800 and comparable to Slog3. I filmed in 51,200 ISO and the footage was pretty much good for how dark the scene was. It's about half a stop or so less in dynamic range so it's a good trade off.
      Still, I think the A7SIII is more video-centric than all mirrorless cameras with no pixel binning, pixel shift, nor overheating. Also 4K@120fps 10bit 4:2:2 in real time with audio is massive for sport and wildlife.
      I think S5 IIX is competing with A7iv, and in that regard it leads. Would I go for it? No, nearly every L-mount lens has an E-mount version, but not vice versa.

    • @OurSweetHideout

      A7siii is amazing in low light and af, but it lacks all the video centrix things, no shutter angle, no waveforms, open gate, no external raw output, no pro-res, and lumix s5ii x today gets a new firmware update, it has proxies capability, i mean lumix has the best in body statbilsation and colours, but i think both cameras are great,!
      if you have either a7siii or lumix s5iix, its both amazing cameras, it comes down oto the user

    • @Bo_Hazem
      @Bo_Hazem 5 місяців тому +2

      @@OurSweetHideout Can't argue with that, and that's great and Sony needs someone to push them to offer more. Open gate being massive especially for anamorphic lenses. RAW though if it's not R3D then it's not worth it to me, because R3D is both massively small and true RAW vs Prores that barely has any advantage over either all-intra and even GOP H.265.
      Stabilization wise I think the newer Sony's are better with 8-stop vs 6.5-stop on the Lumix (A9III, A7Rv, ZV-E1). To me the main selling point for A7SIII and its brothers is the extremely high ISO that I want to use to film night wildlife or have organic lighting at night with less lights, just what the movie "The Creator" done which has the best looking night shoots of any movie imho.
      I'm just waiting for the new A7Siv/FX3 II that might sport the first 2-layer transistor, stacked sensor which would probably hit 1M ISO with richer colors and near 2x ISO performance.

    • @DennisSchmitz
      @DennisSchmitz 5 місяців тому +1

      @@Bo_Hazem Sony definitely improved a lot to a point where the A9III probably has the best video image of any mirrorless camera.
      But the A7III image just wasn't good enough for my taste with its way too intense noise reduction. Let's see what the A7sIV and Panasonic S2(H) are going to offer. Exciting times ahead!
