    When I first started fishing with friends a long time ago, you were posh if you had a bamboo cane and that isn't a joke.
    Starters today have never had it so good, which is no bad thing.

    A cheap and cheerful wee set up for someone who wants to try out fly fishing, two thumbs up from me, if it encourages more people to take up the fly then I'll be a happy man.
    Keep up the good work!!!

    The 9.99 rubberised flip top landing nets were an absolute steal in Lidl also. Great for most of my lure fishing. I did spot the fly fishing kits and although I don’t really need one it’s good to see how you rated the set up.

    Thanks for the review. Completely new to fly fishing, so bought this rod to give it a try. Good to see someone who knows what they’re doing catching so many fish. Has given me confidence in the kit

    They had these in the middle aisle of my local Lidl for the last couple of weeks.
    I've wanted to try fly fishing for a while but was always put off by the cost, if it wasn't for me I didn't want to spend a fortune!
    For £30 I was convinced this was going to be garbage, but I was still curious about trying fly fishing. I Googled "Lidl fly fishing" and found this review, which was enough to convince me to go back and make my purchase.
    Thanks for the content, you have a new subscriber and I have my first fly fishing setup!

    I was lucky two months ago to be given the opportunity to go fly fishing for the very first time at the Cregennan Lakes in Snowdonia National Park. Since then I have been completely hooked. Fly fishing seemed to be an expensive hobby. Now after seeing your wonderful video on the amazing Aldi Paladin rod I can see that is simply not the case. Thank you for sharing!

      Totally agree with Medicated flowers, it's only as expensive as you want it to be. It's a shame that there's that perception though about fly fishing being an expensive sport, I had the same thoughts before I started.

    I started tying in 1969. I started trying to cast I think earlier the same year.
    I used my dad's ancient fly fishing outfit at first but since as a 12 year old I already knew everything so I never asked Dad. It took me years to get good at casting.
    My first fly rod was a Daiwa 8' 7wt. I bought in 1970, I still have it.
    I bought a big Daiwa reel for $11 I still have that. It was an ugly unbalanced outfit and I had no idea of fly line, you know matching line, rod and reel. I think I bought some cheap line made by Omni. The one thing about learning with a mongrel outfit that weighed about 5lbs, you can cast anything! LOL like literally any ugly combo.
    These new outfits are hugely better than back in the day but it really helps to have visual casting and mending instruction.
    I quite enjoyed this episode! Well done!!!
    IB that was crazy!!! You were still casting beautifully and to hook up the same fish twice in a few minutes.
    A PB on a field test! Doesn't get much better!!!!

    Excellent video, and very honest and to the point, this would be a great kit for someone who was interested in having a go at fly fishing for the first time, but didn't want to spend too much, and for that reason, its a excellent kit, if they don't like fly fishing after trying, its hardly breaking the bank, and if someone buys the kit and has a good experience and enjoys the fishing and if they are able to cast with this, they will almost certainly be able to cast with a better quality set up, so a great kit for a introduction into fly fishing, and at the end of the day, the trout aren't able to tell whether its a Hardy Rod or a Lidl rod :-) thanks for a great review

    I bought this rod this year from Lidl. Found the instructions useful and it was a great price ( think it’s £10 more this year) the line still doesn’t fit and struggle to reel the line in. Used the flies that came with it and has taken a couple of trips out to catch but I did get a beautiful brown on it (think I.B’s is bigger but not far off hers). Never fly fished before this and find the casting a bit tricky but I’m happy I have caught on it and I’ll hopefully try again this weekend. Great video’s nice to see a couple sharing a hobby.

    We get the irony about us talking about cheap fly fishing while fishing in what is considered an expensive water, but as you all know we had 10 days of rain in UK and that was the only river where it was fishable on father's day. The plan was either cheaper day ticket water or a free stretch, rain had different ideas!

    I purchased that set up last week, not used it yet but chucked the line on the reel and gave the once over. Leaders were missing from my package but no big deal. I’m a big fan of snowbee line and I gotta say that this line feels similar. I was really expecting a crappy spring coiled line so very much surprised with the quality. if I was noob just starting out I’d be lost regarding putting the kit together but then again not many people start fishing without some experienced helpers. I only really got this kit to see if would be any good and I reckon you’d struggle find starter kit better. A lot of us spend more than this on a day ticket or heaven forbid a weekends worth of carp bait lol.

      @IBandAndyFishing  5 років тому

      It's a great way of getting people to try out fly fishing isn't?! Hmm. Our kit had instructions step by step how to set everything up, did yours not come with it?
      The line is really a decent line, there was absolutely nothing wrong with it. If anything I regret not trying it out on one of my normal rods.. let us know how you get one when you take it out for a play! .

    Great clip Andy. I've seen £700 rods with worse cork. Won't mention any brands... If this get's someone into fly fishing, it would be a good thing. We need people to maintain our rivers and lakes when we are all gone. The most important components in an outfit are the rod and line. A good line can transform a poor rod.

    I got this rod for a laugh. I put less of the backing on so the line loaded on the reel better.
    I took it to my local carp lake just to try a few casts. I couldn’t agree more, it casts lovely, only downside is, the line is very light and people may have difficulty casting in the wind….. On the plus plus side. I caught a nice carp on the rod while I was just mucking about.

    Fun video. First time I have come across your channel. Really enjoyed you showing newbie that affordable fishing gear works ok because fly fishing does have a lot of snobs in the sport which can be intimidating for new folks. One last thing, I got a kick out of how you mentioned many times that the bright yellow floating line isn't liked in your country but I can tell you that yellow is the most common line I see here in Canada.

    Great video, since watching it a couple of month ago, I have been waiting for them to come back in stock, 10/6/21 back in and bought one on the strength of your video and delighted with it. Been fishing since 1962 so with the rods I have used over the years I think I will be able to cope with the thicker section and action, being bought up on tank ariel, split cane and early fiberglass.😉. I will be taking it in our campervan and not have to worry too much about it. Thanks for the video

    My first fly fishing set was a Ron Thompson all in one box for about the same price. It was like fishing with a poker and a slinky. I kept it for a while but slowly worked my way up to my current rigs, probably worth about £500 each, but one of my faves is a little 7ft 3wt from Fladen I got on Amazon, paired up with a cheap chinese Maxicatch reel and line. The whole lot cost me about £35 and its brilliant fun to catch with. I would recommend that anybody getting into fly fishing get that, or similar, instead of the Aldi set. it might feel ok, but i doubt it has any real longevity and it's limitations will frustrate the novice in the way that my first rod did.

    Hi Ieva and Andy , nice video , I didn't start fly fishing as I thought that it's hard to learn to cast and that the cost of gear is a bit to high to get started , you need waders you need , rod, flies and was afraid to spend money and then fail to learn how to do it. Your glasses Ieva nice by the way . Tight lines .

      @IBandAndyFishing  5 років тому +1

      If it was that hard then I wouldn't be able to do it Ted!!! You can pick these things up really cheaply if you shop around, then it's just about getting some practise in, or even better having some time with an instructor, it's a worthy investment!

  • @gfen5446
    @gfen5446 2 роки тому +1

    Not that I suspect you'll ever see this, to say nothing of the fact you've figured it out but that feeling your describing about "heavy, clumsy but delicate and casts itself" is why some people prefer older fiberglass rods and even a bit of the feeling in a bamboo fly rod. Its the weight in the rod that helps it load and cast. You're just not used to it because you've been using too fast graphite sticks from go and never used one before.

    I went into Lidl for some croissants last weekend....came out with this fly outfit (plus quite a decent spinning reel for £13). I'm pretty new to fly fishing - done it a few times but I'm essentially a novice. A useful tip for any left-handers out there, like me: the reel is set up for right-handed fishermen/women i.e. the drag is on the retrieve if, like me, you crank the reel with your right hand while holding the rod in your left. Not a problem though: simply take the spool off and if you look carefully you'll see a little neoprene grommet holding the centre ratchet onto the base of the spindle. Carefully tease that off (I used a very blunt knife), remove the ratchet and jut flip it over and replace it (don't forget the grommet). Next week I'm going out with a friend, who's more experienced, on one of the rivers here in Devon. Can't wait!

      Update (only a year later...) After my comment (above) I spent a morning on the River Bray with my friend; he completely blanked - but I caught two brown trout with my LIdl set-up! Looking forward now to the start of this year's season.

    Just bought one last week! Good comfort knowing its my technique that got me the blank the one day I've had to take it out (I'm still gonna blame the high sun though 🤣) on another note, the line I ended up with seems to be a mislabelled wf line rather than double taper, the end with the little label was on the fattest part of the line

    Its basically a fibre glass rod, can tell by the thickness at the handle end, they were all like this at one time and basically is what I started off my fly fishing on years ago when I was around 18, in fact I still have my old Shakespeare 9 ft fibre rod 7-8 wt I think, which i bought in a similar set for £15 in Fort William or Fort Augustus, Scotland maybe 45 years ago (with which I then promptly set off to the River Moriston to try and catch a 20lb or more salmon on a #14 wet Coch y bondhu! ..I never did mind aha!) but it throws a fantastic line, the last time, again years ago, was with a cortland 444 9wt intermediate with some ease I have to say.......and as we know, glass has been enjoying a resurgence in popularity because it is still an excellent material for slower, softer action rods without the expense (or shouldn't be!). However by virtue of the material it is, you can't get the finer diameter blanks as with carbon....so you have to have the 'bigger butt end' for strength tapering down to a slimmer tip. Oliver Kite apparently had the best season he'd ever had during 1961 using his Milbrolite fibre rods! Oh....and I'm now convinced those 'pheremones' (which women have) really do work.....so if you want to catch really big fish, maybe stand next to IB when you are fishing!!......Aha!
