  • I had a spark of inspiration, ordered a bunch of carnivorous plants and now we are finally arranging them all into their own little universe...or in this case a capsule terrarium. This is a real life terrarium build starting with nothing but an order of carnivorous plants and a vessel I've been dreaming of putting them in.
I also mentioned one of my idols ‪@SerpaDesign‬ in this build. The video I was talking about was this one • The Carnivorous Sundew...
The goal of this project was to take all of my carnivorous plants, merge them into one tiny scoop of nature and do it all with a ton of new terrarium ingredients. This is my carnivorous capsule terrarium build and I'm excited your here to check it out!
This video is about carnivorous plants, plant vlog, terrarium build, carnivorous terrarium build, how to build a terrarium, plant guy, terrarium vlog, building a carnivorous terrarium, plant lover, rambling about houseplants, building a terrarium, pitcher plants, venus fly trap, sundews, drosaria, carnivorous terrarium with a pond and most importantly...above all else. This video is about some pretty awesome carnivorous plants and the terrarium build I made just for them.

You may already be aware, but that aquasoil is nutrient-rich and is toxic to the roots of all of the carnivorous plants. The venus flytrap and sarracenia both require dormancy, without which they will eventually run out of steam and die. The cape sundew you chose does not require dormancy. With a mix of temperate and tropical species, this is just not a sustainable terrarium. I recommend redoing this project with proper substrate and selecting plants which do not require a dormancy if you want to keep this around for a while. I admit it does look cool though! Your plant room is beautiful! That Australian tree fern is devine. Happy growing.

I didn't realize or even consider the aquasoil being nutrient rich. Yikes! Thanks for the heads up. I overlooked the whole dormancy thing. I had described my project along with my list of plants to the grower I got them from on etsy and got the thumbs up so I hadn't even really thought about it. I guess for now I'll just watch, learn and if I start to see them suffer...start again. Just after the project isn't quite so new and doesn't feel so defeating 🤣 Thanks so much for the advice.

You're welcome! Not sure I remember the whole plants in three thing, but I do always like to plant in odd numbers so I assume its that.

It's important to have no nutrients; the aqua soil was not a good idea because of the nutrients contained therein. Remember to water your carnivorous plants with demineralised water as well.

It's still going great! I feed it fish food when I think about it.

I used tap water. I use RO water now just because I have it on hand for my reef tank.

Sundews (and most, if not all, carnivorous plants) require distilled/R.O/rain water. Tap/bottled/well water will kill them over time as the minerals build up. Boiling water does not help. Leaving the water out does not help. You can buy a ZeroWater brand water jug that will filter water and is relatively cheap. They are similar to Brita filters, but Brita filters do not filter well enough for these plants to stay happy.
