- I'm feeling fired up after my first solo show in quite some time which was last night at the Rockwood Music Hall in NYC. It was the 17th anniversary of my residency there, which until the pandemic was a weekly solo set. In the last few years I've been featuring collaborations which I love, but missing solo sets was the whole impetus for Lonesome Fridays. Now that Rockwood has closed down its larger stage 2, I'm back on the original stage like old times, and will be doing solo shows on a monthly basis. Come by Jan. 10, Feb. 7, and Mar. 6 if you're in the city.
This song is the Jimmy Martin classic Sophronie, which has been a staple of my solo sets since the beginning. Along the way I recorded it with Chris Thile on our duo record Sleep With One Eye Open. I used to sing the line "now I'm just a hot shot with a teardrop in my eye" where "hot shot" sounded more like "hot dog" so that's an amusing image which for me will be forever associated with the song. This song got me in a lot of trouble one time. I was driving and listening to a live Jimmy Martin record (with Sunny Mtn Boys) and they started playing this barn burner. I apparently got super pumped because little did I know-I was going like 85 mph (and it was 55 speed limit on that stretch of Virginia interstate). Pretty sure the song is what made me speed! Anyway the cop pulled me over and I got charged with “reckless driving speeding”-then had to deal with that of course.
Darn you, “Sophronie!” - this was your fault!
(I thought about trying to use that excuse to the judge -who looked like he might enjoy some bluegrass, but then I thought the better of it.)
Moral of the story: don’t listen to bluegrass and drive, kids.
