The Golden Rocket - Michael Daves & Jacob Jolliff
Here’s The Golden Rocket, a song that will be on our upcoming Jim & Jesse tribute album (written by Hank Snow). @jhdjolliff and I are getting ready for a concert this Sunday afternoon, Sept. 8 in Brooklyn, in the same 19th Century church hall where we tracked the record. It’s a special space and we hope you’ll join us there if you are in the area. 2pm, @OldFirstBrooklyn #bluegrassharmony at 7th Ave and Carroll St. in Park Slope. Tickets:
www.viewcy.com/e/michael_daves__jacob
Proceeds benefit the restoration of the historic building which includes Tiffany glass windows and a Roosevelt pipe organ, and which serves as an important gathering space for many different community groups.

And Am I Born To Die (Doc Watson style) - Michael Daves & Billy Strings
Переглядів 3,5 тис.Місяць тому
Got together with Billy Strings as part of a monthly series on Doc Watson songs I’ve been doing for my school of bluegrass vocals on ArtistWorks. The whole discussion was a half hour long and includes three songs. Here’s an excerpt, an old shape note hymn that Doc recorded, And Am I Born to Die (aka Idumea). Billy’s been singing it solo a capella from time to time but I learned a chilling duet ...
Mississippi Moon (Peter Rowan)

Happy 4th of July, and also happy 82nd birthday to the great Peter Rowan! Here’s his song Mississippi Moon, which he recorded with Seatrain in 1971 with Richard Greene on fiddle. It’s a real sleeper, and should become a standard. Glad to hear Peter singing it some as of late! I’m psyched for two ostensibly solo shows next week, where I’ll likely pull this one out. On Wednesday, July 10 I’ve got...
Michael Daves & Alex Hargreaves play Paddy on the Tunrpike

Got together with my buddy Alex Hargreaves to shoot a welcome video for our ArtistWorks schools. I’ve been doing a monthly series on Doc Watson songs for my vocal students, but after a while we started with some tunes that Doc picked. This one is Paddy on the Turnpike, which appears on the Bill Monroe & Doc Watson live recordings (and was recorded on the White House lawn in 1980, following an i...

I’m getting myself in the zone to teach a five week Zoom class on Tony Rice’s seminal 1983 (mostly) solo album, Church Street Blues. We’ll be diving deep into the first eight tracks on the record as well as placing it in the context of Tony’s music and bluegrass guitar traditions in general. Two classes will feature special guests, notable guitarists with strong connections to the album and Ton...
Lonesome Fridays 2023 #10 - Sunny Side of the Mountain
Переглядів 1,5 тис.8 місяців тому
I'm bringing Lonesome Fridays 2023 to a close with Sunny Side of the Mountain, a classic most associated with the (self-proclaimed) King of Bluegrass, Jimmy Martin, who named his band The Sunny Mountain Boys after it. The original recording was from 1946 by Hank, the Singing Ranger, later known as Hank Snow, and it was also a staple of Bill Monroe's repertoire. I've only ever performed this son...
Lonesome Fridays 2023 #9 - Hickory Wind
Переглядів 1,4 тис.8 місяців тому
Here's' Hickory Wind, a cosmic country classic credited to Gram Parsons, though some attribute its authorship to South Carolina folksinger Sylvia Sammons. Regardless of who wrote it, it's a killer song that is forever associated with Parsons' mythology due to his unauthorized performance of it on the Grand Ole Opry (instead of the Merle Haggard song that had been approved by the powers that be)...

I love this Norman Blake classic because it's a great song and is set in my beloved North Georgia hills of home. But also because it's sort of a blank slate in terms of guitar breaks. Norman, perhaps the greatest solo flatpicker of all time, for some reason doesn't take a guitar break on his original recording. So we just have to imagine what he would have played. I'm not exactly working in Nor...

I'm feeling fired up after my first solo show in quite some time which was last night at the Rockwood Music Hall in NYC. It was the 17th anniversary of my residency there, which until the pandemic was a weekly solo set. In the last few years I've been featuring collaborations which I love, but missing solo sets was the whole impetus for Lonesome Fridays. Now that Rockwood has closed down its la...

Fulfilling the set's George Jones quota here with a great country classic about a creepy voyeur who gets his heart broke. I'm playing a great old Gibson J50 that my dad got in trade from my musical godfather Whit Connah (for a Marc Savoy cajun accordion). Every time I play it I think of Whit, who could sing a George Jones song as powerfully as anybody this side of The Possum hisself. I’ll surel...
Lonesome Fridays 2023 #5 - Soldier's Joy/ Back Up And Push

We're how halfway through Lonesome Fridays 2023 and it's fiddle tune time. Here are two chestnuts, Soldier's Joy and Back Up And Push. I don't use capos as often as many guitarists but sometimes an non-folk key just feels right. In this case it's E flat, which according to James Brown is the funkiest key and I believe him. I have some in-person solo sets coming up in the near future, unexpected...
Lonesome Fridays 2023 #4 - When Someone Wants to leave
Переглядів 9309 місяців тому
Here's When Someone Wants to Leave, a great Dolly Parton song from her Jolene album (1974). Country pop at its finest! I learned it recently for a show of all Doc Watson and Dolly Parton material. Speaking of Dolly, I had the amazing opportunity to back her up on a recording for the tribute album I Am A Pilgrim:Doc Watson at 100 which came out earlier this year. The track, Tom Paxton's folk ant...

Here’s Way Downtown which is helping me gear up to teach a Doc Watson online class in observance of his centennial this year. We’ll be exploring his playing on the seminal Nitty Gritty Dirt Band album Will the Circle Be Unbroken. Recorded in 1971 and released in 1972, it brought Doc’s music to much wider (and younger) audiences and kicked his career to another level. Context aside, Doc’s playin...

This week's song is Hungry Ghosts which I learned from its writer Whit Connah, a musical mentor from where I grew up in Atlanta, GA. He and his wife Barbara Panter recorded this with their Cajun/Honky Tonk band Hair Of The Dog on their album Bon À Rien in the late '90s. The original track features fierce electric guitar work and arrangement by Barbara's son John Ferguson who is also an influenc...

Wow. Cooke Duet record in the background. I’d like to hear you perform a haunting version of their “A Better Place to Go” - one of my favorites (which I haven’t heard in years!) This performance was great too btw! Great picking, great energy, great harmonies - and that vamp at the end was the cherry on top

Please, please record your vocals every moment that you can. Preserve the legacy and history that your voice carries, for the future. Your expertise in action creates a bridge for this and future generations to a past that may exist only under the asphalt, in future times.
