This is pure gold. Love them and the real stories. We grew up slauson and 3rd ave. Was a great place to live.. things changed dramatically after 1970. Everything was there. Shopping, restaurants, doctors, veterinarians, neighborhood pub, parks, just to name a few.
Nice, I really enjoyed this interview! I always wanted to know how many former residents of South Central LA were still alive and to hear their stories.
I turned 53 years old yesterday(January 5th). I was born at South LA hospital which I believe might have at one time been known or called Hoover Medical Ctr. and Dr Pilson was my mom's Dr when she had me I've kept up on the changes from the hospital to housing and the issues surrounding it but was pleasantly surprised to see this video pop up in my feed.
Outstanding article! I'm a Los Angelian from the Exposition and Crenshaw area; and I get so emotional thinking about growing up in the greatest city in the world. If I could go back, I absolutely would. Thanx again 👍
Grew up in Leimert Park. Hepburn to be exact from 1955-1980. Ray Charles 8 houses away and Ella Fitzgerald across the street. Good times growing up for sure. The whole area was clean and safe. Baldwin Hills Mall was the first mall in America and was an experiment. Watched the demographics slowly change over the years but the area still sorta remained ever so slightly. 😢
WOW, I GREW UP HEARING ALL MY GRANDPARENTS MEMORIES ABOUT HOW NICE AND CLEAN DOWNTOWN L.A WAS IN THE 20AND 30S ALL THE MOST BEAUTIFUL STORES AND RESTRAUNTS. WISHED I WOULD HAVE SEEN IT.
I have memories of the area of what's called South Central. I grew up there in the 40s and 50s between Avalon and San Pedro used to play in South Park, lived there from baby till I was in 4th grade. Went to Main street School 53rd and Main from kindergarten. I would love to talk about it to people.
Wow, South Park my husband worked there in the 80’s and 90’s when it had become a Black and a few Mexican community. I love listening to this. Thank You
I got you, RedRose. I’ve heard about this one. I’m putting this next up either before or after Jordan High School. I’ll start my research on it soon and see how deep I can get
I grew up in Silver Lake. If I had the financial opportunity to go back and live there, I would do it in a heartbeat! It's my old neighborhood and I have great, fond memories that I still cherish today. Great interview. 🥰
I then moved to 37th and St Andrews went to 36th st school graduated to Foshay Jr high school and graduated to Manual arts in 55 knew the group the Coasters.
Please do a story on the milk dairies along Slauson. I remember Knudson on Slauson and Western and another on Slauson near Vernmont. There was another in Leimert Park
My dad grew up there in the late 40's through the late 50's including Hollywood and Mac Aruthur Park areas. The consensus from so many former white residents including my older family members and so many others is that right around 1960, whites started leaving in droves over and over again and people were not separated like they are now. Something happened that created this chronic anti-white sentiment that nothing could stop. It was like an avalanche. Also my mom's dad was born in what is now Skid Row in the early 1920's and said "poverty alone could not have destroyed the metro area of central and south Los Angeles like the way it became. It was something else."
Please Please tell us about the building in Vermont and slauson that was demolished it was a sears store, before it was demolished I saw it it was a beautiful building
I'll look into it. I just saw a photo of the sears building just before it was finished, and it's difficult to believe it once stood where the giant strip-mall-styled shopping center is. I'll have to look into it. In case anyone is interested in the photo - cdm16703.contentdm.oclc.org/digital/collection/photos/id/96049/
Jews in Los Angeles primarily live (and lived) on the west side. That is, west of La Cienega and north of Culver City. The largest and most concentrated Jewish communities are in and around Beverly Hills and the Fairfax District. There are a lot of Jewish people in and around Hancock Park as well.
Vermont and slauson neighborhood😊 will back then you have Sears and robot you had no berries you have the temple theater across the street you had Jersey made behind thrifty's,John Muir Junior high
Thank you for this video. I guess everybody’s different but don’t get mad at me. There is no way I would ever move back into Los Angeles and the inner city now to this day. I grew up not too far from the street that she grew up on and anytime I go into that area. I get disgusted with all the trash and homelessness And police presence and everything else negative. I cannot understand. Why is it clean once you go more west near Crenshaw going towards the beach and it gets clean when you go east not too far from the 605 freeway but right in between is disgusting. I am so glad I moved to Torrance area And also back-and-forth to Hawaii. Because we have property over there. I know this story isn’t about me. I’m just saying that I hate what I see in Los Angeles in the inner city now because it’s so dirty and the people don’t care about the conditions in Los Angeles and they are politically illiterate or a lot of of them because they vote against themselves. Well, thank you for this video. This is just my opinion and don’t get mad at me. I am from Los Angeles so I know and feel what I’m talking about is true if you’re not from Los Angele then you won’t understand.
This is great! I grew up in South LA in the 60s and 70s. There is a deep history in our community. More folks from our community needs to see this.

It’s terrible how the city of LA has neglected South LA.today you never see street maintenance crews maintaining the areas like north of the 110 fwy.
I then moved to 37th and St Andrews went to 36th st school graduated to Foshay Jr high school and graduated to Manual arts in 55 knew the group the Coasters.
Interesting story!😊

I’ll have to look into this, but it sounds interesting. Thank you for the tip!
That's the neighborhood I grew up in, 54th and Hoover, in the 80s.

Good interview. Lets get some history on Mid City and Highland Park.

That was post WW2..most of them lived in Boyle Heights , south LA or neighborhoods one would consider “working class” nowadays..aka white flight
@karinec.2131 u beat me to it, it was Boyle heights
White people really do make neighborhoods safe , I’m Hispanic and I gladly admit that , I love white people
Vermont and slauson neighborhood😊 will back then you have Sears and robot you had no berries you have the temple theater across the street you had Jersey made behind thrifty's,John Muir Junior high
Thank you so much for sharing this. It’s so cool to hear what the neighborhood had
So sad she didn’t retain her native Russian language.
I know the area that the lady was talking about well.
