In September of 2023, we revisited the story of the South Hoover Hospital, a major clinic and maternity center in South Los Angeles for nearly four decades, but we didn't have much of an opportunity to learn much about the man who built the hospital. In between that time, I had the opportunity to connect with Dr. Pilson's daughter, Harriet, and her son, Bob, who both agreed to share details beh...

Saint Leo. Not Saint Leon. Verbum Dei. Not Verbun Dei.
*Eastside Low Bottoms sh*t !* _Tappin' in from South Central LA_ I'm a proud graduate of Jeff (Class of 92, Wutitdo !). I'm still in the area. As a matter of fact, I literally just drove past there on my way home. Still under construction. I graduated a couple of years before the racial tension exploded. When I was there, for the most part everyone got along - except the gang bangers obviously. My story: One morning at P.E. we were playing flag football. During one play I got the ball and was juking in the opposite direction until everyone let me know. Ever since then the P.E. teachers, Mr. Newton and Mr. Fuji nicknamed me "Wrongway". 😂 Good times.
This is great! I grew up in South LA in the 60s and 70s. There is a deep history in our community. More folks from our community needs to see this.
Good interview. Lets get some history on Mid City and Highland Park.
They need to do this to the alleys behind MacArthur park
White people really do make neighborhoods safe , I’m Hispanic and I gladly admit that , I love white people
I heard about this swapmeet. I never went there! But now im curious to go check it out!
We need more caring doctos like Dr. Pilson! May he rest in peace!
Dr. Pilson was a very carig an. May he rest in peace!🙏
Interesting story!😊
My dad grew up there in the late 40's through the late 50's including Hollywood and Mac Aruthur Park areas. The consensus from so many former white residents including my older family members and so many others is that right around 1960, whites started leaving in droves over and over again and people were not separated like they are now. Something happened that created this chronic anti-white sentiment that nothing could stop. It was like an avalanche. Also my mom's dad was born in what is now Skid Row in the early 1920's and said "poverty alone could not have destroyed the metro area of central and south Los Angeles like the way it became. It was something else."
Wonderfully done. This was like a mini movie. Thank you
This was Awesome to watch PTL hallelujah ☝️ Started watching HOW FAITH WORKS few years ago Change my Life Im ALWAYS watching Fredrick kc price 80s videos What faith is gosh im happy happy Joy.... enjoy heaven Fredrick KC Price You The Man 🫵😎 Cheerz from Auckland New Zealand 🇳🇿🇳🇿🇳🇿
This is pure gold. Love them and the real stories. We grew up slauson and 3rd ave. Was a great place to live.. things changed dramatically after 1970. Everything was there. Shopping, restaurants, doctors, veterinarians, neighborhood pub, parks, just to name a few.
Jews in Los Angeles primarily live (and lived) on the west side. That is, west of La Cienega and north of Culver City. The largest and most concentrated Jewish communities are in and around Beverly Hills and the Fairfax District. There are a lot of Jewish people in and around Hancock Park as well.
That was post WW2..most of them lived in Boyle Heights , south LA or neighborhoods one would consider “working class” nowadays..aka white flight
@karinec.2131 u beat me to it, it was Boyle heights
So sad she didn’t retain her native Russian language.
Great interview! I was born in that hospital early 1970’s
Amazing story. I was born at Hoover Street Hospital in 1978.
I grew up on 54th between Vermont and Hoover and I lived right next to the half walk as we called it in the 70s
Me too! 52nd Street x hoover and Vermont.
This interview was absolutely fantastic 👏 This couple has won my ❤️ I love you both for this video !!!

Thanks, Hood Historian!
I grew up in Silver Lake. If I had the financial opportunity to go back and live there, I would do it in a heartbeat! It's my old neighborhood and I have great, fond memories that I still cherish today. Great interview. 🥰
Class of 1995!
That's the neighborhood I grew up in, 54th and Hoover, in the 80s.
It’s terrible how the city of LA has neglected South LA.today you never see street maintenance crews maintaining the areas like north of the 110 fwy.
Please do a story on the milk dairies along Slauson. I remember Knudson on Slauson and Western and another on Slauson near Vernmont. There was another in Leimert Park
I’ll have to look into this, but it sounds interesting. Thank you for the tip!
Dr. Pilson was my family doctor. I remember getting sick and having to stay overnight in his hospital. My brother was born at South Hoover hospital on June 20th, 1966.
Thanks so much for sharing this. It’s so interesting to hear these community stories about this hospital
Awesone interview. Keep them coming please!!!
Thanks for going this history lesson on this area of Los Angeles. My dad was a doctor whose office was located at 92nd and Broadway and was on staff at this hospital and Morningside Hospital as well as St. Francis Hospital in Lynwood, CA. Also on staff at King Drew. 🙏🏾
That’s so cool! Do you remember any stories from your dad about his time working at any of those local hospitals?
I used to live across the street in some apartments
I grew up in South LA. Budlong and 53rd in the 60s. I remember Dr Pilson, making a house call when I got the mumps. I think it was $5. A very special time. I went to kindergarten at 52nd street. I remember the Sears and Roebuck on Slauson and Vermont. Thanks for documenting this.
Really enjoyed the interview I'm also South Los Angeles the Vernon and Broadway area ,keep bringing more interviews..
Graduate of class of 1978. Didn’t know it started as a junior high. Watts riots ran all the white kids out. Myself and three of my brothers attended there during different periods. Go Generals!!!
I then moved to 37th and St Andrews went to 36th st school graduated to Foshay Jr high school and graduated to Manual arts in 55 knew the group the Coasters.
I know the area that the lady was talking about well.
I have memories of the area of what's called South Central. I grew up there in the 40s and 50s between Avalon and San Pedro used to play in South Park, lived there from baby till I was in 4th grade. Went to Main street School 53rd and Main from kindergarten. I would love to talk about it to people.
I
Wow! Dr. Pilson was my doctor from 66-68 and I still have my immunization record from that time. This is a good vid brings back memories ❤
Glad I could share this with you!
Please Please tell us about the building in Vermont and slauson that was demolished it was a sears store, before it was demolished I saw it it was a beautiful building
I'll look into it. I just saw a photo of the sears building just before it was finished, and it's difficult to believe it once stood where the giant strip-mall-styled shopping center is. I'll have to look into it. In case anyone is interested in the photo - cdm16703.contentdm.oclc.org/digital/collection/photos/id/96049/
Yes it was
My Mom shopped at that Sears when we were kids

Outstanding article! I'm a Los Angelian from the Exposition and Crenshaw area; and I get so emotional thinking about growing up in the greatest city in the world. If I could go back, I absolutely would. Thanx again 👍
Grew up in Leimert Park. Hepburn to be exact from 1955-1980. Ray Charles 8 houses away and Ella Fitzgerald across the street. Good times growing up for sure. The whole area was clean and safe. Baldwin Hills Mall was the first mall in America and was an experiment. Watched the demographics slowly change over the years but the area still sorta remained ever so slightly. 😢
WOW, I GREW UP HEARING ALL MY GRANDPARENTS MEMORIES ABOUT HOW NICE AND CLEAN DOWNTOWN L.A WAS IN THE 20AND 30S ALL THE MOST BEAUTIFUL STORES AND RESTRAUNTS. WISHED I WOULD HAVE SEEN IT.
This series has been great, so interesting and informative. I love your channel, please continue to educate us about the history of South Central
Thank you, Red Rose! I’m looking forward to sharing more. Happy New Year!
I would love to know the history of Bon Air hospital, I believe if my memory serves me correctly, it was on 120th and Broadway
I got you, RedRose. I’ve heard about this one. I’m putting this next up either before or after Jordan High School. I’ll start my research on it soon and see how deep I can get
Thank you, I look forward to it. Hoping you have a productive and prosperous New Year
Love This ❤
