G.-F. Händel ( 1685 - 1759)
Aria "Ombra mai fù " ( 1 Act ) from the Opera "Serse" (HWV 40), first performed in London at the King's Theatre, Haymarket , on 15 April 1738.
The libretto is adapted by an unknown hand from that by Silvio Stampiglia for an earlier opera of the same name by Giovanni Bononcini in 1694. Stampiglia's libretto was itself based on one by Nicolò Minato that was set by Francesco Cavalli in 1654.
The main role of the Persian King Xerxes sang Gaetano Majorano (Caffarelli), it was his first and only one season (1737 / 38 ) on the London stage, and Händel composed for his new Primo Uomo the roles of Faramondo ( premiered on 3th. January 1738, 8 performances) , Serse ( only 5 performances) and in pasticcio "Alessandro severo".
Unlike his other operas for London, Händel included comic (buffo) elements in "Serse" , but this Opera wasn´t an success because of " the libretto not old enough " and " the music too modern ".
Caffarelli left London quite disappointed.

I play many times under its shadow and I remember the orange juice my mother made every morning for me. I loved this tree, it was a link to my parents. When I heard this aria, I can´t help but cry remembering how pleasant my tree and my life was.

Years ago when i was a young music student i could never get into Handel or counter tenors. Now I'm an old man, Philippe has turned me on to both. I love it! And, i love it when something or someone shows me the merit and/or beauty of something i didn't appreciate before. The value of struggling to keep ones mind open, listening, observing, as the years pass is important, i think. God is always talking to us. Love, ya know?!

I was intrigued by his name on the Mezzo channel and only months later decided to look him up on UA-cam. For me, as a mere listener, Philippe and Jakub Orlinsky have the most expressive voices.

I too did not understand Handel when i was young... it is now that I have elevated him to the top and that I can see the immense beauty in his music...

Not only the music is magnificent but Philippe Jaroussky is absolutely amazing... I've listened to several countertenors in my life but no one has such a purity... and such a high-pitched voice... When I think the guy came to singing quite late after winning an award as a violin player, then studied piano... Wow...
Marc Moingeon I recommend the countertenor Jakub Józef Orlinski. He also sounds like a pure angel.

For the longest time, my favorite version was as sung by Kathleen Ferrier. But times goes by and voices change and surpass each other. This version by the inimitable Philippe Jaroussky is heavenly and brings tears to my eyes every time I hear it. What luck to have lived in the same time as this amazing singer!

Stunningly beautiful version by Phillipe Jarrousky. I used Fritz Wunderlich version for my wedding March and Cecilia Bartoli must also be heard. A credit to the composer that we still hear interpretations hundreds of years later!

Diese Arie habe ich heute Abend gehört, live von Jaroussky im Festspielhaus Baden-Baden als Zugabe gesungen. Großartig, dieses Händel-Konzert mit seinem Orchester Artaserse und einem göttlich singenden und dennoch natürlich, bescheiden und einfach liebenswert auftretenden Countertenor. Unfortunately for you there is an explanation that is accessible to anyone with just a little intelligence that they are able to use freely. Philippe's quite exceptional singing is a glorious result of the combination of the great chain of events of human evolution, (morphological, intellectual, and socio-cultural), and a lot of very hard mental and physical work. Don't attribute the hard-earned "blood, sweat, and tears" achievements of real people to imaginary entities.

I was talking to my mom about countertenors and how Chanticlear got rid of all their good ones (a rant for another day) and I pulled this up as an example of a spectacular countertenor. And even though I've heard this piece a million times and this version half of those times, his opening phrase reduced me to tears. Not watery eyes, literal tears rolling down my face a few sobs. There is so much ugly, mean and vial in our world recently that this reminds me, at least, that something as simple as a C growing from silence can break through the haze and make us feel human again.
The next video in autoplay was Kardashian outtakes, so my enlightenment was short lived and brutally killed. 😑
I have the same issue with grammarly adverts. You're not alone. I like the note about a C growing from silence.
